    Amazing stats.
    A couple of years ago (like 7-8 years actually) I began a "movie trip", going from country to country, not travelling but watching movies. Starting in my home country of Sweden, then Finland, then Norway, over water to Iceland, Ireland and so on. Most difficult was actually Moldavia, finding a decent movie with subtitles. Then I started my African movie trip with Egypt, going west with Sudan, the amazing movie countries of Mali and Senegal. Equatorial guinea was difficult. Only one official produced movie at that time, note even having a distribution yet. Had to wait a year to watch that movie. To sum it up, it is a fun way to experience a country through movies. In some countries I "stopped" and watch a handful before moving on. Sadly my trip came to a halt in Mozambique. Couldn't find anything with subtitles.

      That’s actually a really impressive idea, I love the sound of that. I may have to implement that at some point, I can imagine it being great fun! I was tempted to also do something similar with years, so watching stuff from 1921, and from there doing 1922 until I’m ready to move on to 1923.

    Awesome. You should check out some more obscure or independent movies from filmmakers like Giuseppe Andrews, Damon Packard, Ryan Trecartin, Shinya Tsukamoto, Takashi Miike, and Joel Haver. Just some cool areas to branch out into. I also love Czech New Wave movies.

      Guess I'll see what you think of them since I'm following you on letterboxd now. Wouldn't be surprised if you hate some of the artsier/strange ones 😅. But hey it's always worth it to try new things. They were pretty eye-opening for me as an independent filmmaker.

      Given how many movies you watch you might have seen them but since you seem to enjoy Japanese movies I love the director Takeshi Kitano, and my favorite of his is “Sonatine”. For your France watchlist, I recommend “A prophet” if you haven’t seen it (most of the movies from the same director are great).

    do you have every streaming platform? And what do you do when you cannot find a film in those platforms? I usually struggle to find some films so I wanted to hear that from you.
    also really impressive how you watched basically like 3 to 4 films a day. I have a long list that I want to finish and I wanted to ask you like what’s the best way like to just concentrate on films. I am a college student and I do have my free time but I like doing a bunch of stuff also so it’s hard for me to find like a moment in the day to watch just one film.

    What a legend, I'm curious, especially with a baby, how frequently do you sit down and completely zone in vs having a film on more so in the background?

    • @gilanes
      @gilanes  7 месяцев назад +5

      Man, that’s a great question. The honest answer is I’m not sure. If I’ve put a movie on, I’m definitely paying all my attention to it, but like you said the baby naturally does distract, so I wouldn’t be able to say. Funnily enough there were a few other movies that my Wife put on, which I didn’t log, because I was either focused on something else or not really watching enough, so I wouldn’t log a movie unless I felt confident it had gotten the respect it deserved. Great question though!

    • @gilanes
      @gilanes  6 месяцев назад

      Great question. Honestly I try to switch them up so there’s not many of the same movie back to back. So instead of watching 3 Marvel movies in a row for example, maybe a Hitchcock followed by a Kurosawa followed by a random Indie one. That’s not exact of course, but it’s a rough jist.

      A mixture of everything. I have a lot of the streaming services and amongst my coworkers a lot of potential DVD borrows. Honestly, a majority of the pre-1940s are on RUclips as well, which is a huge help.

  • @Thomas-hd1ci

    • @gilanes
      @gilanes  7 месяцев назад +1

      I had a small book that I’d write suggestions into and had different sections. So I always had way more in there than I could manage and would add to it whenever a new movie was suggested to me. A lot of older movies also happened to be on RUclips or Plex which was handy. And my coworkers had a lot of DVDs to lend me haha.
