The case with Ponyo is that it is only for children whereas other Miyazaki films have themes that can be understand and celebrate by all age groups . I can't explain why but I feel that way and it's just my opinion 😊
I've been watching since the very first "what I watched in august" and each month I love getting recommended unique and different films, let's gooo Karsten!
Only Yesterday is the single most underappreciated Ghibli film imo. Sure it's a lot slower paced than their other works and sure it doesn't have any fantastical elements, but I think its overall direction is so strong that it manages to take what would otherwise be an unfocused mess of a narrative and transforms it into a deeply heartfelt, personal journey about what it means to live. So glad you liked it, since I don't see it get nearly enough love
I'm the same age as Taeko and it just affects you differently when you are. And I'm happy he did too, in the Jello Apocalypse Ghibli video it was talked very negatively of which disappointed me immensely.
i saw oldboy for the first time and i don’t think i’ve ever been more shocked by a plot twist in my life. i almost saw it with my dad, but thank god he hates subtitles lmao

Amour is some of the most I have ever cried at a movie, and it's not in a manipulative way in the slightest. It's such an incredibly made movie all around.

Man I just want to say that I love your monthly recommendations. You inspired me to keep a list of all the movies I watch every month, and a lot of the ones I loved I discovered them thanks to you. So… thank you really! 😊
Two Miyazaki films id like you to check out is castle in the sky and Nausicca valley of the wind, the world and setting to me felt so fascinating and unique to me. Its one of his earlier films, might even be his first two.
What's Up Doc? is my favorite film of all time and I've been hoping you would watch it for a long time so I'm really glad you finally did! I get how the end may feel a bit tedious but I've just seen it so many times that I don't notice it at all. It's a movie you can watch over and over again throughout your life and it only gets even funnier.
I also watched The Last Picture Show this last month, and man. It truly is such a coming of age movie and hits you hard. I bought the Criterion BBS Story boxset back in 2021 but never got around to watching all of the films in the set until this summer.
I’m learning Italian and watched ponyo with the original audio with Italian subtitles. Watching it and not understanding a lot of the characters dialogue made me appreciate the animation style even more.
I feel alone for not watching literally all of these movies, but they all look very interesting, especially Oldboy as I’ve heard so much hype about that film.
Please, I wish I could see some of these for the first time again. People who look at a slate like this and go "boringggg" are the ones who should be ashamed, not you for simply being fashionably late to the party.
You are obviously an old soul, watching and appreciating all those old movies! I love that you liked The Last Picture Show. Did you notice it was based on a novel by Larry McMurtry who also wrote the source material for Terms of Endearment, Lonesome Dove and Brokeback Mountain? My favourite older movies tend to be those based on stage plays. I forget if you have seen A Streetcar Named Desire or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Any movie based on a play by Tennessee Williams is very much worth seeing.
Nice to see that with this month, the films watched had a higher level of quality. It was clear there was more passion from Karsten with his praises for the films, which was nice.
I can not wait for the month I'll find a portuguese film entry on this series! I'd suggest Metamorphisis of Birds, Mutants, and Wolf & Dog to do so. Keep it up Runq!
I watched a lot in August, but here’s some highlights- The Long Goodbye (1973) - 4/5 WarGames (1983) - 4/5 It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) - 4/5 Election (1999) - 4/5 The Other Side of the Wind (2018) - 4/5 Becoming Cary Grant (2017) - 5/5 The Killing (1956) - 5/5 Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) - 4/5 Detachment (2011) - 4/5 Ordinary People (1980) - 5/5 Seven Chances (1924) - 5/5 The Hunt (Jagten) (2012) - 5/5 The Apartment (1960) - 5/5 Seven Years In Tibet (1997) - 4/5 The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011) - 4/5 All for the first time. Also had a bunch of rewatches, like I revisited Charade (1963, 5/5) and Sunset Boulevard (1950, 5/5).
I also watched The Last Picture Show this month! I watched 14 movies... Le Samourai (4/5) Melancholia (2/5) Princess Mononoke (4/5) North by Northwest (4/5) Manhattan (2.5/5) Bad Lieutenant (3.5/5) Only God Forgives (3/5) The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (3.5/5) Oldboy (4/5) Inherent Vice (3.5/5) The Mother and the Whore (4.5/5) The Last Picture Show (4.5/5) Clue (4/5) Late Spring (4/5)
Thanks for sharing your love of movies each month, Karsten! BTW, after seeing several Ghibli films, have you consider take a look at works of Shinkai or Hosoda?
I think Haneke’s honest treatment of the bleaker, tougher side of aging ironically makes the Amour one of his sweeter, humanist films. Through showing us the harshest things that the man is willing to put himself through to keep his promise to his wife, Haneke really shows us the power of love in what it pushes people to do for those they care for. Hence, ‘Amour’.
Glad to see another viewer of the overlooked What’s Up, Doc? It has a Mel Brooks-esque so I see it as a Brooks flick than the director of the film himself, Peter Bogdanovich. As of now it's my all-time favorite comedy.
I watched/re-watched a whole lotta movies in august and i’m going to list them all here for anyone who cares (yes i have too much time on my hands): Scream VI 7/10 really great new take on the franchise Hereditary 9/10 One of the most disturbing experiences Following 7/10 Kinda forgettable but you can really see the talent that comes thought in christopher nolan’s later films Memento 9/10 THAT ENDING THOOOOO What We Do in the Shadows 10/10 One of my favourite comedies ever Eighth Grade 10/10 I feel seen. Bo Burnham you've done it again Promising Young Woman 6/10 Bo Burnham carried this movie Insomnia 7/10 That was weird Evil Dead Rise 8/10 weakest of the franchise but that really says a lot because I LOVE this Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret 8/10 A great new coming of age film X 8/10 the definition of not for kids Hunt for the Wilderpeople 9/10 I love Taika Waititi and this is one of his hidden gems Scott Pilgrim vs. the World 9/10 one of the most quotable movies in my house, but no i won’t be watching the show Perfect Blue 10/10 YOU NEED TO WATCH THIS, some of the most eerie media i’ve seen since get out The Princess Bride 10/10 one of my most nostalgic movies Weird: The Al Yankovic Story 9/10 Probably the greatest biopic of all time Oppenheimer 9/10 Ok, this is awesome Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 9/10 trash (joke… i was joking, don’t kill me) Puss in Boots: The Last Wish 9/10 who would of thought the sequel to the shrek spin-off is one of the best animated movies of the year Blade Runner 2049 10/10 Yeah, it slaps Talk to Me 9/10 a fresh vivid take on this type of story which i really needed to see right now Palm Springs 8/10 J. K. Simmons jumpscare The Batman 9/10 The most emo movie I've ever seen Marcel the Shell with Shoes On 8/10 I cried The World’s End 8/10 Edgar Wright has not missed Dinosaur Hotel 3/10 wtf is this movie The Truman Show 10/10 need i say more? Dinosaur Hotel 2 3/10 yeah i watched the sequel… it was also trash, but kinda funny you know? The Edge of Seventeen 9/10 touch, that hit close to home Meg 2: The Trench 4/10 pretty stupid… I loved it Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken 3/10 dreamworks really went from puss in boots 2 to this? Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 9/10 it actually feels like a conclusion Lady Bird 9/10 If hormones were a movie The Fifth Element 7/10 bruce willis for the win!!!! Barbie 10/10 unironically my favourite movie of the year, one of the only movies I re-watched in theatres fair enough if it didn't work for you but I think it was amazing and fresh and it just makes me feel happy Ok after all that, thank you for reading or a least skimming this have a great dayyyy (also yes i do have a letterboxd letterboxd.com/matui/ follow me hehehe)
Nice! I haven't seen most of these I think. But reading the list, seeing ur taste, I added "True blue" to my watch list bc u said "you have to watch this", so thanks for the recommendation I may or may not watch, u said it's eerie & horror isn't rlly may thing so idk we'll see.
@afictionalnerd Oh yeah it's "perfect blue" not "true" lol. I wrote it correctly in my list tho so that's what counts. You're welcome for reading it. Hope you have another great month of watches!
Noticed that Landscape With Invisible Hand was left out. I really loved it, but saw that you were a bit lukewarm. I personally loved the bait and switch from the trailer. Went in expecting a John Green sci-fi and ended up with a Douglas Adams/Boots Riley spiritual collab.
I love that we both have seen The Big Heat, The last Picture Show, Don't Bother to Knock and What's Up Doc recently, are you stalking my Letterboxd? HA. Cause I haven't looked at yours to be honest, so I found it to be quite a cool coincidence for me personally. We feel the same about all of them as well - great films. I can't wait to watch some of the other movies you loved that are on this list, especially the French ones. Our opinions line up 99% of the time!!
Damnnn I have no idea that the horrendous Ben Stiller Heartbreak kid is a remake!! Miss Hoff from high school picked this one for the class for “movie day” and I was scared forever lol
Honestly one of the less spoken about films in your list, What's Up Doc, is just awesome. I really did not enjoy romance movies that much, or romance-comedies, but happened to see this and it was right up my alley, even if i didnt know I even had this alley. Not perfect, not a cult classic, and certainly not the movie that gets appraise and like Ponyo and Only Yesterday like i see in the comments, but still just a very fun movie, it definitely sticks in my mind, just has plenty of fun memorable moments, some scenes are just expertly efficient with jokes and wordplay and back-and-forth verbal bits.
I watched ponyo for the first time this august! Was not expecting to say this but… it is my favourite movie I have watched for the first time this year. My special edition steel book blu ray arrived in the mail today! It makes me so happy 😭
Great video as always. I'd like to also suggest you check out some Spanish films, I haven't seen any in your channel, or at least i can't recall, and we have one of the biggest and most diverse film industries. To get a good idea you should check the "Premios Goya", our equivalent to the Cesar or the Oscar, alongside checking the classics, Berlanga, Almodóvar, Buñuel, Amenabar, Trueba, Bardem, Alex de la Iglesia, Cuerda and more.
Have u thought abt adding the years to the titles? I.e. “what I watched in august 2023” ik it’s easily accessible in the description but might be easier for searching/archiving purposes! Not sure if its even possible to edit tho
Here is what i watched this month: Clerks - 9.5/10 Kill Bill Vol. 1 - 9/10 The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) - 7.5/10 Kill Bill Vol. 2 - 9/10 Playground - 8/10 Snuff - 7/10 (short film) Rejected - 10/10 (short film) Captain Voyeur - 8/10 When A Stranger Calls - 8/10 (short film) The Animation Show - 9/10 (short film) The Big Shave - 7/10 Multiple Maniacs - 8/10 Scary Movie 4 - 6.5/10 (short film) The Cat With Hands - 8/10 (short film) Henry Eats - 7/10 (short film) Pink Floyd - The Final Cut - 8/10 Maniac Cop - 8.5/10 Asteroid City - 8/10 The Love Bug - 9/10 Chopping Mall - 8/10 (short film) The Snails - 9/10 Haunted House (1941) - 6/10 Favorites: Clerks, Kill Bill 1, Rejected Least Favorite: Haunted House
As a longtime enjoyer of Karsten videos, this is the first month that the entire list just screams “I’m a film student” that a casual moviegoer like myself would never have seen. Have not seen a single film on this list. Still, gotta give it a like 👍
What I watched: -Bee movie -Puss in boots: The Last Wish -Despicable me -Avatar (episodes) -Mean girls x2 -Monsters vs aliens -Barbie x2 -Coraline (theater showing) -Across the Spider-Verse (Edit), Reviews: -Avatar - Watched season 3 up to ep. 8. I will say it feels like there's been a lot of lounging around for it being the 1st half of the final season, I definitely thought it would kick off more. But ik they're planning for an ambush & the fire nation is supposed to be thinking they might can relax for now, but still it feels like not enough has happened in the amount of episodes there have been, but the last few episodes have had some great development so it seems to be picking up now, & I do get what they're going for. -Bee movie - I honestly like it even more now than when I was a kid, I can appreciate more how it's just so not a typical movie, & it rlly is a great time. -Puss in boots - Great movie, beautiful animation, it's the best variation of the spider-verse style I've seen so far. Nothing much to say, I have very few problems, & they aren't major. I see why everyone raved about it. -Despicable Me - I have total childhood bias for this movie, but in trying to put that aside, it's no masterpiece but I think it gets put aside as just kid movie candy too much, I think it's pretty well put together, fairly funny at times, genuinely cute. If you compare it (& the sequels) to a more recent illumination movie, Mario, or actually takes appropriate time to have character moments & be genuine, & I don't think they're bad moments, which I think counts for a good amount. - Mean Girls - Great movie. I love it. I watched it twice bc it was getting taken off Netflix. Loved it both times. I think it's so well paced, I love how Lindsay Lohan progressively becomes plastic herself. I love when it culminates into the whole school fighting each other. I love the movie intro & character intros. I love how it uses music at times. All the performances are great. Love it. -Monsters vs Aliens - Nothing THAT special, but it's pretty neat. I think they could've done a better job introducing the main character, Susan, but I still feel for her, & the bond she grows w the monsters. There are some pretty dang good moments of animation where you can rlly feel the size of large things in the movie, some pretty funny jokes here & there. A childhood movie I'd still watch again. Mb not many times though. -Barbie - I have a harder time trying to look at this movie on a technical level than most films. I definitely enjoy it, I think it's a lot of fun. Can't think of a bad performance, obviously Robbie & Gosling get talked about most, as they should, but I think the daughter, Sasha, doesn't get enough credit for how good a child actress she is. It might be a bit cheesy at times, but if so only a bit, & I rlly buy her as a moody middle school girl, she does a great job. Also Kate McKinnon & the president character I think turn in some noteworthy short performances, it's my favorite McKinnon performance I've seen. & The 2nd main Ken. But I could go on bc everyone's great. & I think ppl are being stupid over the political discourse, it OBVIOUSLY is not 1 sided like they say it is, & in coming years I think ppl will talk about how Barbie was secretly genius in its hidden messaging as well. Idk if I'd say that but people will. -Coraline - Got to watch it in a theater, which was super awesome. I'd probably say what anyone else would say about it. Great atmosphere & tone, very intriguing, lots of sympathy for coraline, legitimately intense around the end. Great performances, stellar animation. A lot to think on. Great movie. -Across the Spider-Verse - What even is there to say? Best looking movie I've ever seen. Brilliant score, some great record drops. Great stakes & moral questions tied into the spidey mythos, fantastic performances, so on & so on. I will say I think it's a bit overrated, just a bit. I think Into the Spider-Verse is better, I think, without taking into account that it's part 1, the 1st 45 minutes of the movie does drag some, & there's other stuff too, but how can you really focus on all that when the rest of the movie is right there, & so damn great?
What I watched Requiem for a Dream. 5/5 Braindead/Dead Alive 5/5 (one of my favorite movies ever) The Nice Guys. 4.5/5 Death Proof. 2/5 Collateral. 4/5 What We Do in the Shadows. 3.5/5 Joker. 4/5 Chinatown. 5/5 Liar Liar. 4/5 First Reformed. 5/5 Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. 4/5 Carlito’s Way. 5/5 Lady Bird. 4/5 Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. 4/5
I watched Oldboy for the first time and our theater’s ac wasn’t working, so it slowly got hotter and hotter as the movie progressed. Talk about immersion into the story haha
I finally finished watching Naruto this month (I've been watching it for over a year) & all I can say is that it was quite a journey. Also watched the canon Naruto movie (The Last: Naruto the movie) & didn't liked it at all (1.5/10). The only other movie I watched in August is The Flash & it was surprisingly pretty good (7/10). But the best thing I watched in August is The Bear. I binged both seasons & it was phenomenal, genuinely one of the best shows I've ever seen (10/10). Also watching Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 (weekly).
no 1997 cult film classic "romy and michelle's high school reunion"( hope it would be in the next "what i watched this month" or better in entire new video about it
Ponyo never really gripped me, the whole storyline with ponyos dad and the parents and old people etc kind of confused me as a kid and i got bored except for fantastical parts. Despite it being one of the more cutesy and dreamlike ones it always felt more adult-oriented to me, dialogue wise. I do think the main character, his mum and ponyo are a really adorable dynamic and i love the scene of them eating ramen at the house etc.
Man I can hear you even don’t want to talk about „L’Amour”. This must be a tough one. For me it was a great and packed month: Our Folks (1967) - 4/5 Take It Easy (1974) - 3.5/5 12 Angry Man (1957) - 5/5 (hits as hard as on the first watch) Vanishing Point (1971) - 4/5 (Hidden gem) The Nice Guys (2016) - 3/5 (Had so much potential 😢) Enter The Void (2009) - 4.5/5 (This film makes a lot of mistakes but man it delivers feelings that you wouldn’t get anywhere else) Killer Joe (2011) - 4/5 (R.I.P. Friedkin you madman) Past Lives (2023) - 3.5/5 Unforgiven (1992) - 4/5 How I Unleashed World War 2 (1970) - 4/5 Divorce Italian Style (1961) - 3.5/5 (Mastroianni my beloved ❤) Pacifiction (2022) - 5/5 (If you haven’t seen it yet - go watch it now) The Brown Bunny (2003) - 4/5 Barbie (2023) - 4/5 Oppenheimer (2023) - 4/5 La Grande Bouffle (1973) - 3.5/5 (Fantastic concept but too much typical for 70’s moralisation) Camouflage (1977) - 5/5 (Amazing performance by Zapasiewicz, perfect depiction of cynicism and again… if you haven’t seen it - go watch it now) Cairo Station (1958) - 3.5/5 (but it looks absolutly stunning) Sorcerer (1977) - 4/5 If someone read it all - I hope you found here some new recommendation 😊 My lb: Mt_zal
I watched Don't Bother to Knock for the first time last month as well! I loved how they didn't demonize Monroe's character for what she did, Widmark and Bancroft although the latter barely had reason to go along with it just wanted to see this lost soul get the help she needed. And it's not like what she did was NBD so to convince us that she is deserving of help is a feat. Monroe really does get to bust out the big guns acting, when Nell cries hearing a plane overhead? Just tears you apart. Widmark I'd previously seen in Kiss of Death and man, possibly the nastiest noir baddie. Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Only Yesterday are major favorites of mine. Big Heat, great, What's Up Doc, great, Amour and the General, great great great! What a fun month. Still need to see Last Picture Show though, huge blindspot for me.
My August watches: The Starling girl- 4/5 Zindagi Tamasha- 4/5 See how they run- 3.5/5 The tunnel to summer, the exit of goodbyes- 3/5 One for the road- 4/5 No hard feelings- 3.5/5 Elemental- 3.5/5 You hurt my feelings- 4/5 Past Lives- 5/5 I also watched the 5 new episodes of Only murders in the building. Past Lives is hands down the best thing I watched in August.
Not really mentioned in the video, though it is in the screenshot at the end; as the guy who tracked down Christopher Nolan's Tarantella I appreciate it so much that you watched it. Yeah, it's not a great short film, but it's fun to see someone so big on RUclips seeing it, something that would've been impossible had it not been for my obsessive lost media search for it
That aspect of sadness at growing away further from your youth was peaked for me when I saw A.I. Artificial Intelligence. I don’t think I’ve cried harder (I needed a moment to let myself meltdown and subsequently reel from what I watched) than at the end of this. Absolutely my favorite Spielberg (tied with Last Crusade) that takes you through millenniums (quite literally) of self discovery. As for Mouchette, I thought it was also a masterpiece, because we’re supposed to suffer like how children are often unseen and left to suffer themselves. The sound design especially was phenomenally sparse. I can totally get why people wouldn’t like it (hate it, even), especially with”the one scene in the shed” (IYKYK), but I think it’s just a more extreme, cruelly realized part of Bresson’s views on humanity with or without god. Would like some pick-me-up or empowering recommendations though, ‘cus I totally feel Karsten on that 🫠.
What I watched this month: Network (1976) 7/10 Kwaidan (1964) 7.5/10 Crash (1996) 7/10 Singing in the Rain (1952) 8.5/10 Yi Yi (2000) (Rewatch) 9/10 Mulholland Drive (2001) (Rewatch) 9.5/10 Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) 6.5/10 The Long Goodbye (1973) 6.5/10 Thirteen Lives (2022) 7/10 Throne of Blood (1957) 8.5/10 The Hidden Fortress (1958) 8/10
@@joedorben3504 Kwaidan didn't live up to expectations personally but tbh The Long Goodbye I wasn't paying as much attention as I should've. Still recommend watching both!
Ponyo was the last movie I watched with my mom before she died. It's a spectacular movie but I do not think I can ever watch it again. Oldboy I will certainly never watch again lol that twisted had me so fcked up

You are *_absolutely correct_* about "Passages" like... I'm not 100% on either of their catalogs (yet), but have Franz Rogowski or Adèle Exarchopoulos been in a bad movie yet? Also great to see such a strong performance from Ben Whishaw, I really want to see him in more films now. "Amour" is incredible, I think everyone has that same "why is this happening" -> resolution feeling. And the Almodovar retrospective is really, really good. Been watching with my boyfriend and I highly recommend going chronologically, it's very effective. Kinda missing "All About My Mother" from the selection, but otherwise very good.
the irony of saying that you had only watched ponyo as a child so you were "basically watching it for the first time"... ponyo, that movie about the wonder of seeing stuff through the eyes of childhood
I thinK the most fun I had in August was Gran Tourismo, I got to be very picky about motorsport (and rolled my eyes whenever Geri Halliwell Horner made a brief appearance). Just watched Passages this afternoon, not quite my favourite of the year, but loved it (people eating crisps and popcorn at certain points wasn’t great. I’m no fan of crunchy food in the cinema, but was really the wrong film for smelly crunchy food.).
If you are looking for another studio ghibli film to watch, the tale of princess kaguya is very different stylistically and so beautiful. A great foreign film (if you are ready to get sad) is Come and See, which is about the Belarusian Genocide duration kg ww2. The entire film was put on RUclips for free by the film studio.

Only Yesterday is the single most underappreciated Ghibli film imo. Sure it's a lot slower paced than their other works and sure it doesn't have any fantastical elements, but I think its overall direction is so strong that it manages to take what would otherwise be an unfocused mess of a narrative and transforms it into a deeply heartfelt, personal journey about what it means to live. you forgot don't bother to knock
Thank you boss 🙏
Ponyo is undoubtedly one of my favorite films, the way the colors mix with the beautiful animation style is incredible.
Amour is some of the most I have ever cried at a movie, and it's not in a manipulative way in the slightest. It's such an incredibly made movie all around.
karsten never fails to make a video.
except for when he does and we don't even know
Mubi is such an awesome sponsorship, I love the content they have, basically just amazing movies there
August was a book month for me as I worked through my backlog post-Barbenheimer. And I'm finally ready to check out Umbrellas of Cherbourgh

Man I just want to say that I love your monthly recommendations. You inspired me to keep a list of all the movies I watch every month, and a lot of the ones I loved I discovered them thanks to you.
So… thank you really! 😊
I first watched Amour last year with my mother, just a few weeks after my grandpa died. Needless to say we bawled our eyes out. Great Movie tho
Great video Karsten, in the month of august I saw The Outsiders, Pink Flamingos, and All That Jazz, and recently saw Bottoms. Great month for watches.
All that jazz 🥺
All That Jazz is really good 👍
It sounds like Karsten needs a hug after all the downers he watched in August
Two Miyazaki films id like you to check out is castle in the sky and Nausicca valley of the wind, the world and setting to me felt so fascinating and unique to me. Its one of his earlier films, might even be his first two.
nausicca is iconic absolutely stunning
Those are two of my favourite films of all time
Both beautiful films 👌
What's Up Doc? is my favorite film of all time and I've been hoping you would watch it for a long time so I'm really glad you finally did! I get how the end may feel a bit tedious but I've just seen it so many times that I don't notice it at all. It's a movie you can watch over and over again throughout your life and it only gets even funnier.
I also watched The Last Picture Show this last month, and man. It truly is such a coming of age movie and hits you hard. I bought the Criterion BBS Story boxset back in 2021 but never got around to watching all of the films in the set until this summer.
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is really a masterpiece! Love Ponyo, Only Yesterday and The Last Picture Show too.
Oldboy got a re release a week or two ago, I think that’s why everyone’s mentioning it again
i almost wrote oldboy off and didn’t see it but it is very worth the watch
Yep. On August 16th it was having 20th anniversary screenings in participating theaters. Great movie. Was my 2nd time watching it
Please, I wish I could see some of these for the first time again. People who look at a slate like this and go "boringggg" are the ones who should be ashamed, not you for simply being fashionably late to the party.
Oldboy is really good. I also recommend Ponyo and Only Yesterday too 😊
You are obviously an old soul, watching and appreciating all those old movies!
I noticed this too! So nice to see
Ponyo was my first studio ghibli movie that I’d seen and it’ll always have a special place in my heart!
I can not wait for the month I'll find a portuguese film entry on this series! I'd suggest Metamorphisis of Birds, Mutants, and Wolf & Dog to do so. Keep it up Runq!
"The Last Picture Show" and "What's Up, Doc?" made me love Peter Bogdanovich -- "Star 80" erased all that.
Only Yesterday is in my top five favorite films. So glad you enjoyed it - Takahata is an incredible artist
Ponyo is my favorite movie its so sweet😭
I watched a lot in August, but here’s some highlights-
The Long Goodbye (1973) - 4/5
WarGames (1983) - 4/5
It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) - 4/5

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011) - 4/5
All for the first time. Also had a bunch of rewatches, like I revisited Charade (1963, 5/5) and Sunset Boulevard (1950, 5/5).
I also watched The Last Picture Show this month! I watched 14 movies...
Le Samourai (4/5)

Yay for top marks for Princess Mononoke, Clue and Late Spring and for low ones to Manhattan. 🙌
That’s nice very nice 👍
Princess Mononoke is so good 😊
Can’t believe Karsten dropped five what i watched in augusts in a row the man cannot be stopped
I’m so excited for the bottoms review 🔥🔥🔥
I love what's up doc! I try to keep track of the suitcases everytime I watch to no avail
The way that every Fritz Lang film is basically the one to do it first and best is insane.
Badlands - 4.5/5
Paper Moon - 5/5
Talk To Me - 4/5
Kinda funny how we both converged in a Bogdanovich mood this month.
How artsy is Badlands? I’ve wanted to get into Terrance Malick for awhile but am aware of how artsy his films are.
Glad to see another viewer of the overlooked What’s Up, Doc? It has a Mel Brooks-esque so I see it as a Brooks flick than the director of the film himself, Peter Bogdanovich. As of now it's my all-time favorite comedy.
What's Up Doc is such a good movie!!!!!!
As soon as I saw the "OldBoy" poster in the thumbnail, I clicked. I wish they released it over here in India
Would highly recommend Bottoms which just came out, really hilarious movie
Showgirls is cinema… pure cinema
would love to see a video all about how to with john wilson!!

What We Do in the Shadows 10/10 One of my favourite comedies ever
Eighth Grade 10/10 I feel seen. Bo Burnham you've done it again

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 9/10 trash (joke… i was joking, don’t kill me)

Talk to Me 9/10 a fresh vivid take on this type of story which i really needed to see right now
Palm Springs 8/10 J. K. Simmons jumpscare

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On 8/10 I cried
The World’s End 8/10 Edgar Wright has not missed
Dinosaur Hotel 3/10 wtf is this movie
The Truman Show 10/10 need i say more?
Dinosaur Hotel 2 3/10 yeah i watched the sequel… it was also trash, but kinda funny you know?
The Edge of Seventeen 9/10 touch, that hit close to home
Meg 2: The Trench 4/10 pretty stupid… I loved it
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken 3/10 dreamworks really went from puss in boots 2 to this?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 9/10 it actually feels like a conclusion
Lady Bird 9/10 If hormones were a movie
The Fifth Element 7/10 bruce willis for the win!!!!
Barbie 10/10 unironically my favourite movie of the year, one of the only movies I re-watched in theatres fair enough if it didn't work for you but I think it was amazing and fresh and it just makes me feel happy
Ok after all that, thank you for reading or a least skimming this have a great dayyyy (also yes i do have a letterboxd letterboxd.com/matui/ follow me hehehe)
Nice! I haven't seen most of these I think. But reading the list, seeing ur taste, I added "True blue" to my watch list bc u said "you have to watch this", so thanks for the recommendation I may or may not watch, u said it's eerie & horror isn't rlly may thing so idk we'll see.
@@pe_stroud4891 oh thx for reading all of it, Perfect Blue might not be your thing, but i thought it was mindblowing
@afictionalnerd Oh yeah it's "perfect blue" not "true" lol. I wrote it correctly in my list tho so that's what counts. You're welcome for reading it. Hope you have another great month of watches!
@@pe_stroud4891 thank youuu, you too
Noticed that Landscape With Invisible Hand was left out.
The Last Picture Show will always be my favourite movie.
To get a good idea you should check the "Premios Goya", our equivalent to the Cesar or the Oscar, alongside checking the classics, Berlanga, Almodóvar, Buñuel, Amenabar, Trueba, Bardem, Alex de la Iglesia, Cuerda and more.
i would be lying if i said this wasn't what karsten watched in august
Yes! You finally watched The Heartbreak Kid!!! I knew you'd give it a 5/5! Easily one of the greatest and most underrated movies of all time!
Have u thought abt adding the years to the titles? I.e. “what I watched in august 2023” ik it’s easily accessible in the description but might be easier for searching/archiving purposes! Not sure if its even possible to edit tho
Marilyn Monroe film recommendations: Niagara, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Bus Stop.
Watched Oldboy for the first time last night and it’s so damn dark and funny, I immediately wanted to watch it again
Here is what i watched this month:

As a longtime enjoyer of Karsten videos, this is the first month that the entire list just screams “I’m a film student” that a casual moviegoer like myself would never have seen. Have not seen a single film on this list. Still, gotta give it a like 👍
What I watched:
-Bee movie
-Puss in boots: The Last Wish
-Despicable me
-Avatar (episodes)
-Mean girls x2
-Monsters vs aliens
-Barbie x2
-Coraline (theater showing)
-Across the Spider-Verse
(Edit), Reviews:
-Avatar - Watched season 3 up to ep.
What I watched
Requiem for a Dream. 5/5
Braindead/Dead Alive 5/5 (one of my favorite movies ever)
The Nice Guys. 4.5/5
Death Proof. 2/5
Collateral. 4/5
What We Do in the Shadows. 3.5/5
Joker. 4/5
Chinatown. 5/5
Liar Liar. 4/5
First Reformed. 5/5
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. 4/5
Carlito’s Way. 5/5
Lady Bird. 4/5
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.
Ponyo Is Dua Lipa's fav anime
no 1997 cult film classic "romy and michelle's high school reunion"(
hope it would be in the next "what i watched this month" or better in entire new video about it
karsten when is the ghibli ranked coming
Good watches 👍
Ponyo, Only Yesterday and Oldboy are such an amazing movies 🎥
Ponyo never really gripped me, the whole storyline with ponyos dad and the parents and old people etc kind of confused me as a kid and i got bored except for fantastical parts. Despite it being one of the more cutesy and dreamlike ones it always felt more adult-oriented to me, dialogue wise. I do think the main character, his mum and ponyo are a really adorable dynamic and i love the scene of them eating ramen at the house etc.
I've had enough. Where can I watch Oldboy!! I've been searching online for so long, I need guidance.
perfect timing as always!! also please watch good omens!!
Man I can hear you even don’t want to talk about „L’Amour”. This must be a tough one.
For me it was a great and packed month:
Our Folks (1967) - 4/5
Take It Easy (1974) - 3.5/5
12 Angry Man (1957) - 5/5 (hits as hard as on the first watch)
Vanishing Point (1971) - 4/5 (Hidden gem)
The Nice Guys (2016) - 3/5 (Had so much potential 😢)
Enter The Void (2009) - 4.5/5 (This film makes a lot of mistakes but man it delivers feelings that you wouldn’t get anywhere else)
Killer Joe (2011) - 4/5 (R.I.P. Friedkin you madman)
Past Lives (2023) - 3.5/5
Unforgiven (1992) - 4/5
How I Unleashed World War 2 (1970) - 4/5
Divorce Italian Style (1961) - 3.5/5 (Mastroianni my beloved ❤)
Pacifiction (2022) - 5/5 (If you haven’t seen it yet - go watch it now)
The Brown Bunny (2003) - 4/5
Barbie (2023) - 4/5
Oppenheimer (2023) - 4/5
La Grande Bouffle (1973) - 3.5/5 (Fantastic concept but too much typical for 70’s moralisation)
Camouflage (1977) - 5/5 (Amazing performance by Zapasiewicz, perfect depiction of cynicism and again… if you haven’t seen it - go watch it now)
Cairo Station (1958) - 3.5/5 (but it looks absolutly stunning)
Sorcerer (1977) - 4/5
If someone read it all - I hope you found here some new recommendation 😊
My lb: Mt_zal
k-man are you gonna go see bottoms? i think you’ll like it
I watched Don't Bother to Knock for the first time last month as well!
My August watches:
The Starling girl- 4/5
Zindagi Tamasha- 4/5
See how they run- 3.5/5
The tunnel to summer, the exit of goodbyes- 3/5
One for the road- 4/5
No hard feelings- 3.5/5
Elemental- 3.5/5
You hurt my feelings- 4/5
Past Lives- 5/5
I also watched the 5 new episodes of Only murders in the building. Past Lives is hands down the best thing I watched in August.
Nice list. I love 'The Big Heat', 'Don't Bother to Knock', 'The Last Picture Show', and many others you watched. Thanks. ::)
I loved passages it was great and yes I’d watch it again! I love Ben and Franz is such a great actor!
I also watched Ponyo in August what a great film Ghibli films do not miss 💖
Amor has got to be one of the hardest films to watch.
What I watched this month:

Kwaidan (1964) 7.5/10
Crash (1996) 7/10

Throne of Blood (1957) 8.5/10
The Hidden Fortress (1958) 8/10
I have been wanting to watch Kwaidan and The Long Goodbye for ages now. Were they somewhat disappointing or just didnt live up to expectations?
@@joedorben3504 Kwaidan didn't live up to expectations personally but tbh The Long Goodbye I wasn't paying as much attention as I should've. Still recommend watching both!
Ponyo was the last movie I watched with my mom before she died. It's a spectacular movie but I do not think I can ever watch it again.
Oldboy I will certainly never watch again lol that twisted had me so fcked up

I watched Synecdoche, New York on the Criterion Channel this summer, what a great film with the late great Phillip Seymour Hoffman
I saw Ponyo the other day too, movie was good until it wasn’t until it was good again
Methinks when ferrari comes out you should do a Michael Mann ranking
Ponyo is my favourite film of all time

Still waiting for you to check out BLUE BEETLE, NIMONA, and 'Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken'!!!!!!!!
