- RuPaul's Drag Race Season 9....the first season of the VH1 era, with giant shoes to fill after the roaring success of All Stars 2. It came in with a bang, and to this day we're still talking about some of its most iconic moments. Valentina's Maskgate and not knowing the words to Greedy, Charlie Hides "lip syncing" to "I Wanna Go," Sasha's rose petal reveal in the finale which knocked frontrunner Shea Coulee out of the running. So many fights from Aja reading Valentina, Nina and Shea's frenemy relationship, and the long-standing rivalry between Trinity and Eureka. This season is filled with so many iconic moments, and we're going to discuss them all.
But just how rigged is Season 9? It doesn't come up in the discussions about the most rigged seasons, but it definitely has some moments we can dissect and talk about, which is exactly what we're going to do today. We're going to go episode by episode and talk about every challenge, lip sync, and runway we can to try and figure out the mystery of the riggory of Season 9. Now let's solve this mystery.

People tend to forget Trinity and Peppermint's alliance before the Finale. They thought there's no way either of them could win against Shea or Sasha. So they decided if they get a chance to pick their opponent for their lipsyncs they will choose each other so that Shea and Sasha would have to go against each other giving either Peppermint or Trinity a better chance at winning.
So that was also a key factor in the downfall of Shea.

I think because All Stars began airing every year after this season and many of the international spin-offs started shortly after. It's been 5 years but probably around 20 seasons.
I feel like anything pre-season 10 is considered "old" now lol

The reason why Nina’s treatment reads bad is because you see queens like Farrah whine and they don’t get shut down in the same way.
I think the issue with this season isn’t that there wasn’t a solo challenge win Sasha was robbed of. It’s the fact that there were so many where it was neck-and-neck between Sasha and someone else, and the producer’s always chose to give it to someone else because they saw them as more winner potential or because it had a better storyline. Sasha could’ve won a lot of other solo challenges over the season, but I think the producers never really gave her one because they never really expected her to do *that* in the finale.
I feel like she should’ve won the ball tbh but I agree with what you’re saying. SUCH a strong cast. One of my top 3 favourite seasons 💗

I agree that either Trinity or Sasha could have won the makeover challenge but the win for Sasha would probably make her ultimate win feel more earned. I actually rooted for Sasha the entire season and she’s my favorite queen ever, but a lot of people still invalidate her win

I understand why the producers brought Cynthia back. However, seeing as she didn't do so well on both seasons 8 & 9, I think it was kinda a waste to have her return
Cynthia had cancer so they brought her back since they likely had it during season 8
Also (not sure if they discussed this is the video, haven't gotten there yet) but I wonder if Cynthia's ties to Pulse night club played a part in her return as well. It gave producers a very real opportunity to discuss on air a perspective from someone who was literally supposed to be there that night. She basically cheated death twice that year. She was beloved on top of everything.
I don’t think they wanted to bring back an actual contender to win, and honestly Cynthia did deserve a second shot after her bad experience in season 8

And with that, I wouldn’t be shocked to see her return for one last run on All Stars, she’s the most polished she’s been and much more experienced than she already was. Alexis Michelle not getting her RUdemption in All Stars 8 was hilarious 😭 I feel like the fandom hates her more
I honestly was so disappointed in Charlie during that lip sync because this is also the episode where she opened up about living during the AIDS crisis and gets very emotional about burying her friends and having survivors guilt. I empathized with her and I thought she could at least stay another episode, but oh my god when the lip sync happened I was like Cynthia in the background “CHARLIE LET’S GO!”
I think part of the makeover is also getting your makeover partner so comfortable that they actually develop their own drag character a bit, like Wintergreen, or Miss Crumbs.
Miz Cookie was Cracker's makeover, Miz Crumbs was her "evil twin" from that awful challenge the next episode
Miz Cookie was one of my absolute favorites, Chester seemed to really embrace it in a way that was enjoyable to witness.

@@johnnybaxter8078 admittedly haven’t rewatched those seasons in a while, so could be that they’re just as rigged idk. But the reason why season 7 always stuck out to me is because not only was it incredibly rigged, but the rigging was also SO obvious. It’s like they didn’t even try to hide it. I was literally a child when that season aired and so I still tended to get fooled by reality tv at the time, but during this season even my naive little self noticed that it was rigged as hell. Lol.

The kardashian roles didn't allow for distinct big personality. Like u listed all the non kardashians lol. And they didn't sing live. Which wouldnt be a large negative if it was a great rusical like herstory of the world with distinct characters. My favourite rusicals are shade. Herstory. Madonna. Cher. Big top etc.
I agree with you on the music, the songs were written very well and were very catchy, but the production value for the musical was very low and the main Kardashians felt like secondary characters rather than the stars, I blame casting :P haha

honestly whenever i want to show someone drag race i will show them season 9. To me its one of the best traditional seasons in the entire series. the cast is great, the first episode has gaga. some of the most iconic eliminations, no intense distracting drama, the more serious moments like the pulse convo were great and well navigated. the reunion had the hot drama and the finale was satisfying.
apparently farrah didn’t do her alejandro reveal because the audio people told her that they couldn’t fit her mic in if she took the robe off but i could be wrong
9021-HO really is about as good as a drag race acting challenge can be. I regularly forget who actually took the win because Trinity, Shea and Valentina are all such powerhouses. Kudos to Farah too.

As a former competitive cheerleader i must admit that i was quite terrified when i saw the cheer challenge and at the level of performance they were expected to give. No matter how good at splits and tumbles and death drops you are, cheerleading is not just gymnastic and requires a high level of control over entirely different sets of muscles and coordination than what ''ordinary'' stunts do. Had they, as you said, toned it down a bit to a more beginner level - which would've still been amazing - i think they would've been able to perform a lot better and be more into it than what they did. They still delivered, but obviously at a high cost.
season 9 is my comfort season and one of my favorites but this video made me realize how objectively amazing it is

I remember when meet the queens first came out and everyone was commenting on how Trinity Taylor was busted and unpolished. Fast forward to now, she’s now known as one of the most talented and polished drag queens to ever be on the show EVER!! 😊
At first I thought Trinity was gonna be mean, but by the end of the first episode I started loving her and now I'm happy that she blocks ppl when they try messing with her? I recall seeing a comment where some lady thought Trinity was rude for blocking her because SHE said something disrespectful to Trinity? Fans being able to connect with their favorite queens is cool, but when the toxic ones verbally attack the queens, I don't think it's such a good thing?
This is perhaps one of the only seasons I can rewatch over and over and not get tired of.

I wouldn’t even include 5 and 6 in ‘older’ tbh. For me, it goes:
- Older seasons: 1-4
- Middle seasons: 5-7
- Kinda new: 8-10
- Newer seasons: 11-13
- Current age: 14-15
Though admittedly it doesn’t really make sense with the numbers now haha. I liked the “eras of drag race” video that one of the drag race channels did (it might have been this channel). It kinda talks about this

Before I watch this, I’m hoping there’s a lot of Nina content, because she did a lot better than fans seem to like to remember, and her drag was definitely the most ignored of the season
I honestly don’t enjoy this season and a big reason is because of the constant bullying these queens did to Nina
i just rewatched the season and nina was edited like a filler queen, she was barely in the episodes and it made me very upset because her talent is so amazing
@@ev1802 yeah, there’s gonna be a collegiate level course on how the queens all dogpiled on Nina as the season went on because her mental health wasn’t as important to them as they were making it seem when they were speaking to her. It was quite literally disgusting to watch them all gang up on her during the season and also at the reunion for essentially being down on herself. There’s such a huge difference between attacking somebody for being constantly negative and attacking somebody for their mental illness which *CLEARLY* prevents them from seeing the positives. Knowing that the reunion was after Shea lost makes it super weird that she would carry on negative energy by attacking a mentally ill sister for as much as she did, also Sasha. I hate how the girls just gave up on her, I know it wasn’t their job to make her feel better but that doesn’t mean y’all have to make her feel WORSE like idc

I was also introduced to Peppermint back in 2010 because of the Telephone parody way before I knew about the show. 😍🤘🏻
I've always felt this season was so interesting with the sort of anti-social media sentiment felt throughout. The queens with more alternative/tradition, organic styles of drag mangaged to make it far and be rewarded while the social media darlings and glamourous queens were kinda ripped to shreds by the judges. Interesting route to go since they went the complete opposite the very next season imo.
Also the idea of casting some of the best queens on Drag Race* and some of the worst queens ON DRAG RACE* in the same season is such a wild ride lmao. Everyone here is iconic for different reasons.
Love this! While we might disagree on what some of the rigging or who should've won certain challenges, the way you approached this was very nice. Full of love for the queens, and also with cleverly placed comments here and there. Don't you dare think the "produssy" went unnoticed. lol
If Eureka didn’t get injured, production 100% would’ve pushed for a lip sync between her & Trinity. I wonder who would win? 🤔
My season 9 hot take is that the Greedy lip sync is a bit overdramatised in the sense that Valentina would go home anyway if even she came out the womb knowing the lyrics to that song and having recited them to the writers of the song herself. Nina was doing great in that lip sync mask gate or not.
Also, as a huge Kesha fan especially at the time of airing, I was bummed a Kesha song was not chosen (C'mon and Your Love Is My Drug are literally begging to be lip sync songs), but I never expected them to actually go through with it at the time. The filming of season 9 must have been less than a year before the first trial for her lawsuit against Dr Luke took place and the FreeKesha hashtag took over social media for a moment. Given that the state of her career was in limbo at the time due to the fact that Dr Luke was blocking Kesha from releasing anything and receiving royalties from the moment the lawsuit was filed in 2014, it would be a punch in the face to have her on the show, while also putting money in the hands of her abuser
Farrah is the only person I've ever encountered who can whine but make it charming and adorable lol

You say that Aja was edited as spoiled, but idk, so many moments she does something spoiled or comes for someone, and then she's shown to have recognized that she messes up and gets on screen chances to fix the problem and apologize. That's what made me stan her this season tbh.
Honestly this season is the most iconic in so many ways. This video really makes me want to rewatch it, because I haven't seen it in a long time, but there are too many seasons now, I don't have time for rewatches 💀

maybe a bit off topic but i'm pretty sure the reason we didn't get a kesha song for the Shea vs Nina lipsync is because of the messy legal thing she had going with Dr. Luke. I don't think she could sell those rights at the time and if she could, it would've gone to Dr. Luke so yeah

Tbh I was worried when Nina opened up she was isolated from the drag community in her hometown. This is because I knew production will used it for the self saboteur storyline.

People who didn’t have LogoTV say this was their first season and it’s a good first VH1 season that really elevated the show but I do miss the simpler times from Logo where we got our fav winners like Jinkx & Bianca
This season also has just about one of each challenge in the franchise except for: talent show, girl group, and the fairy tale princess challenge could also be considered the “sewing” challenge but it’s a design. They’re lucky they got this instead of the drag on a dime challenge.

still believe sasha should’ve won more challenges, ep 1 & the roast, ball & the makeover challenge are all questionable & would have made her look better going into the final 4, still deserved to win
I think your forgetting they was also judged on their sidekick and concept in the princess episode not really as much the outfit they designed. Hence why Valentina was in the top as she had one of the best side kicks and she looked great
