- “In our home, I take on a lot of responsibilities that previous generations would have scoffed at,” says Whit Honea, a co-founder of Dads 4 Change. In a new episode of Home School, The Atlantic’s animated series about parenting, Honea explains why, in a culture where outdated gender stereotypes are “very much alive,” parents shouldn’t dictate gender roles to their children.
“By no means do I want to imply that it's wrong for kids to embrace things that they enjoy just because it falls on one [gender] or the other-just that it shouldn't be mandated by us,” Honea says.

I had a friend Medha. Her family was.....a bit different. Her parents always wanted a son but at first they got a daughter. But then they got a son too after a couple years. She is always treated to do stuff like cleaning, dusting and putting the dishes. She can't play, talk and even look at boys. She can only be friends with girls. She can't play sports, be soft spoken, play with dolls (but she should stop when she turns 8 cause now she is big) and she must get married as soon as she will turn 18 years. But her brother can do anything. Be friends with anyone, play sports, be Bully or whatever, be tough, shouldn't cry, not to play with girl stuff (dolls) and he doesn't need to do any chores.

When I became friends with Medha, I didnt notice she was trying to change how I think. I used to play football/soccer with boys at school and used to watch DC movies. I also had many friends who were boys. She started to make me think like her. No boys no football, no blue and no marvel. But I noticed quick so I told her not to say such stuff to me. She didn't listen. She left me and went with the other girls and then became a Bully. All the girls were jealous I think Idk I just felt like that.
Before they only said mean stuff but then they started to push me and hit me. Well I had complained to our teacher so she said ignore them. But the next day Medha was gonna hit right on my eye so I blocked her hand and punched on her stomach. (I am brown 1 belt in karate) but because I hit her I got punished at school. This wasn't fair.
Now, some of u must be like, where were the boys they didn't help me?
Well, they used to bystand while I got bullied. Sometimes they would say stop but the girls would insult them. And they were pretty scared too.
I am not good in roasting people but I'll improve.

I’m pretty glad my boyfriend and I have pretty similar ideas about gender roles in the relationship. We both cook and clean (in fact most of our fights are about me not cleaning up my messes). I cook and shop more because I enjoy it, he does technical stuff more because enjoys that, and we take turns taking out the trash because we both hate it. :’)
I hated when I go to McDonald’s and they asked me if I’m a girl or a boy because I never liked girls one tho I am one. I was so ashamed that I wasn’t fit in the gender stereotype. Now I’m super proud of myself for being tomboy.

But I know... I think that things are not that bad. Men and women, just people in general, are definitely a lot more open to questioning gender roles and norms. And that is great!

I was babysitting a girl at a park and then a little boy came up too play with us; idk remember how the question came up but he said, “Can boy do girl stuff?” I of course said yes. And that it would be perfectly fine is he wanted to wear makeup and traditionally feminine clothing. He asked me to braid his hair after that, he was a sweet kid

In my family , mom always asks me and my sis to do household chores whereas my brother he gets to relax all day. If I argue about this my mom will say " now he will do dishes for u" I was so disappointed at her. My dad takes my side. And my brother says in name of equality u want to do anything. I think he has some other definition of quality.

My country, Romania, was a communist country until 1989. Don't get me wrong, I hate communism, but if there's one thing it did right is creating equality between men and women in the workforce. Even today, we have the smallest salary gap between genders is Europe!
Unfortunately, gender roles are still way to present in social and family life. I can see a shift in perspective in my generation, but I can't estimate how widespread it is.

I'm actually writing a paper about the connection between gender and expectations about romantic love, and as background information I had to write about some theories about love and gender. Most of my theories about gender and gender development are focused about the parents' influence on gender development. And it's really interesting to me, bc most of them say the same things with different words.

That toy thing at the fast food place hit me hard.When i used to like McDonald's and would go there and order kids meals and such they would always ask what toy.Im a girl and have a younger sister and youbger brother.Me and ny brother loved the "boy"stuff and ny sister was oppisite.Whenever we got our food while inside and got the toys out of the kids me boxes a worker would come by and take the toy i had and give me a "girl"one instead.It always made me mad so I always had to go up to the counter and person who took the toy from me and ask for it back.It was frustrating.I didn't understand why they did that then but now I do and its sad.Those times that that stuff happened was when my parents weren't sexist or homophobic.Last summer is when I found out anf it really hurts me.I'm queer (I stuck with saying Bi tho most of the time,I still cant really figure out if I'm bi or pan so till I find out im queer.)and my parents don't know.They do know I love "boy" clothes and toys and don't like "girl" clothes and toy.I'm not trans,i just prefer boy stuff.My parents and brother really don't appreciate this.To them I'm wrong to be that way and not a proper human being,a slob and hobo.They want me to be more like my sister who is such a sweet girly girl but I'm not interested in the stuff she likes.I'm scared to ever talk back to them or come out and I have around 6 years before I can move out (I'm 12)I have so many supportive people in my life though,but all I want is for my parents to accept me for me but they can't.You raise your children well and I love that.I plan to raise my children to respect everyone and to be themselves.To love what they want to and dress how they want,to be nice and good citezens for being polite and helping others.

True Story: Sociology Students at my school made a poster criticizing this sort of thing. They put all the My Little Pony Characters on the girls side as you might expect, but for some reason, Gummy (Pinkie's Pie's Pet Alligator was listed as a boys toy).

1:48 i dodged a bullet from learning mysoginistic behaviors as a guy. I have a dad who would bebwilling to do household chores because he is from Shanghai, China. That specific area of China focused on gender equality because Mao ZeDong's wife is from Shanghai and he wanted more gender equality. I guess since his wife is from there Shanghainese had a sense of pride of being more progressive in gender norms and i have my dad participating in household chores.

You're right, but in some cases kids are not allowed to do that. It's not uncommon for parents to only buy dolls for girls and cars for boys, and then stop them from naturally gravitating towards what they like

Freedom of choice for everyone is great. To encourage people to make untraditional choices is ok. To expect there not to be group differences is naive. Frankly, this constant focus of avoiding all stereotypical behaviour at all cost, is imperilling the very concept of freedom to be whoever you want to be. I thought we had moved past these blank slate arguments? It’s certainly not a view supported by science.
Using facts and intelligence with proper spelling. Is that allowed? How long is the jail sentence for that? Is it only probation?
I did. The premise of the video is that group differences in interests are a product of outdated stereotypes and norms, and frankly that’s not something most rigorous scholars still believe. The solution he proposes, that people should be encouraged to follow whatever they’re passionate about, is a great solution. I fully endorse that. I’m pointing out that the very same freedom that will allow you to make those choices, is the freedom that unfortunately will reproduce some differences on a group level.
I'd love to read a study if you are referring to one for my own research? I personally haven't seen many scientific papers on testing how the roles in the household affect children in terms of the jobs and hobbies they choose to pursue. Perhaps because it is very difficult to test how children are affected since there are too many variables and it requires too much time to conduct a study to see results.

I didn’t get a notification, so I didn’t see your reply until I randomly browsed the comments now. I could refer to the work of scientists like Simon Baron-Cohen, but honestly there’s no point for me to write up a long post citing studies and hypothesis, as I inevitably would leave something out, and then be accused of cherry picking the studies who support my biases. In general, it’s bad practice to seek out single studies to advocate on behalf of, as it’s too easy to find something that will feed into ones own confirmation bias. I’ll advice you to review meta-analysis (and ideally meta-meta-analysis) on the topic. The group differences are well established (and unusually well replicated) cross-cultural findings in personality psychology. You’ll find no well respected psychology scholar who nowadays will advocate that gender differences in interest can be completely eradicated by cultural means. Additionally, fields like evo psych/biology, dev psych, behavioral genetics, neurosci (and so on) have made a ton of findings supportive of innate differences. There’s no way I could do any of the research justice in a simple comment. You could read “The Blank Slate” by Pinker for a fairly straightforward “Pop-Sci” take on the subject. Or you could engage with the scientific literature on the topic if you have some methodological knowledge. Either way, expecting there not to be mean differences on group level is incredibly naive. Group differences are not synonymous to individual differences, though. So in short, knowing the gender of someone will not tell you anything definitive about their interests. Yet, on a population scale, there are significant differences that can tell us something about the likelihood of having certain interests based on gender.
When I was growing up, I didn't question the idea that women could be doctors or men could be dancers either. That's silly. But these 'stereotypes' being complained of largely come down to individual choices on the part of men and women. There is a large disparity in life choices that cannot be explained away as the evil influence of stereotypes.
And to take the McDonald's toys complaint as an example, though in this *particular* case, with this *particular* toy, your sons might have been unhappy with it, there is actually a very strongly psychologically encoded preference for certain toys exhibited by both sexes. This has even been comprehensively observed in chimpanzees, which demonstrates how deep it goes.

Yeah when I was younger my dad cooked, cleaned, did laundry, dropped my sister and I off to school etc. just like my mom did but growing up we still had generalized ideas based on what we saw. Haha boys and girls have been raised the same since the 70s when parents couldnt spend enough time with their kids bc work so boys and girls did the exact same chores and play, and in the 90s they were both encouraged to do well in school, work, sports etc. but No matter how hard society’s gonna try to eliminate as many gender stereotypes, they’re always gonna be missing something since you can’t change how men and women are different ultimately

You HAVE to force the issue, or else it simply persists. They are actively working to combat the expectations society places on boys and girls--you cannot passively do so. Those kids are getting inundated with the opposite message every time they step out of the house or turn the tv on.

They ARE being forced into gender roles--when they watch Disney movies, or listen to Story Time, or walk out into the world. "Cinderella Ate My Daughter" by Peggy Orenstein or Sharon Lamb's "Packaging Girlhood" are good explorations of this. Or just pick up any Sociology 101 textbook. Your kids are affected by the world around them--often, more so than they're affected by you! Ignoring this and "not forcing the issue" will not help your kid understand how to navigate the messages they receive outside. Yeah...you do have to force the issue and bring it up and teach them that the roles they see outside are not indicative of their real capacities, and you have to be forceful about it, and that IS raising your kids "the right way."

And as a social science major with a backing in forensics, I can tell you that Sociology is the laughing stock of the "social sciences" because most of their research is debunked as soon as Evolutionary Biologists get their hands on it.
You're underestimating children and their intelligence; most, in fact , have a fully-formed personality and sense of choice by the time they're six. They will know what they as beings want to do, it's just up to the parent to grow with them.

Classifying what men generally do and what women generally do as "gender roles" is a social construct of a privileged few. What men and women generally gravitate toward evolved as a need for survival. As early as a few hundred years ago, the mother was the only food source for the baby. If the mother died, so did baby. The men were responsible for the dangerous task of going out to gather food and hunt because they were, essentially, expendable. As a result, men evolved to be the providers. Today, men may have replaced a club with a briefcase, but it is the same concept.
Women being associated with keeping the house in order was not forced upon them by bullish men. It was, again, part of evolution. Throughout history, women were responsible to do whatever they could handle while pregnant and nursing. In today's society, the equivalent would be cleaning the house and going shopping. Men, on the other hand did all the "heavy lifting".
For millennia, boys were taught to be strong fearless hunters and girls were taught to be strong fearless caregivers. The children where taught this way not to satisfy the whims of a patriarchal society but to contribute to the survival of their group/tribe/clan. These lessons have been passed down from generation to generation. The lessons change based on the need for survival. These lessons are still very relevant today except for a small percentage of the worlds population who can readily afford nannies/daycare, security, shelter, food, etc.
You are so immensely fortunate "privileged" if you can afford to focus on something like "gender roles". If you are one of these privileged few and you have a different perception of gender than the rest of the world - keep it to yourself because not everyone is as fortunate as you are. What you "identify" with is no ones business but your own.
In my world, everything that was discussed in the video is sustainable and acceptable, but the world does not revolve around me. The guy owns a washing machine, a car, his own house and everything that comes with it. He can afford to take his kids to a restaurant to eat just because he feels like it. This may be the normal world for anyone who can afford to purchase a devise to watch this video but this guys life is anything but normal in most of the world. Oh, and please do not think your normal is better than someone else's normal. I never like when people try to force their religion on other people and it goes double when you try to force your 'normals' on people.
