  • ***Edit (3/28/23): We were disappointed to hear about the events of March 2023, when the Island Current III was found in possession of undersized cod on two separate occasions by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Managment. Our fisheries are a shared resource that is dependent on our adherence to the regulations to keep them strong for ourselves and future generations of anglers. We applaud the efforts of the RI DEM for protecting our fisheries.
From the RI DEM: "Help protect what is yours and protect Rhode Island's precious natural resources. Report suspected poaching activity directly to DLE at 401-222-3070 (24/7). Calling our dispatch unit directly while suspected violations are actively occurring allows officers the most immediate response possible to stop poaching." ***
As we get ready to launch the 20th season of OTW TV, we're posting this episode from 10 years ago, the 100th episode of OTW.
On this trip, the entire OTW crew headed out for a day of party boat cod fishing aboard the Island Current III out of Snug Harbor Rhode Island.
Look for new episodes of OTW to launch in February 2023, and check out more party boat fishing in our series, At The Rail ( • At The Rail )

That last part hit me in the feels. as soon as I saw cris with an old squidder I knew that set up meant something to him. I spent all last season live lining bunker with my dad's old squidder reel with a rod I bought him. My dad past away last spring and it meant a lot to have a piece of him with me as well as a years worth of video of him me and my son fishing on the boat we restored together. God bless you guys thanks for the hundreds episodes that helped fuel my obsession. Criss I'm sure your father in law would be over the moon proud of your catch with his gear and what you have accomplished with on the water.

I love all the retro gear. Even better if it is familiar/ancestral , and sometimes, when some lands a nice cod they yell to primal scream to the heavens to there ancestors; its real. . the fisherman of the 60 would be sad to see how the past time has declined along with stocks/biomass.. If the government did not spend all our money on war and wind farms they could buy out the commercial draggers , who inadvertently wreck population via by catch . I still have a few big cod polls ( forget name) Honnel maybe? it over kill now, but was fun to win poll with it on Viking 7 years ago with a 19 pounder.

Great Ending when host gets chocked up by using father in laws old rod and reel. ( i still use an old Honnel? Over kill designed for 40 pound Cod which only exist now in NOrway.
Host father in laws Outfit had not scene the water in over 30 years. That's what its all about preserving a culture/heritage, tradition. End of an era..even if the fishing came back, not enough young guys in to it. I Still do trips out of of Montauk in April with fresh clams--.. always looking for guys.

Over the past several weeks, DEM’s Division of Law Enforcement (DLE) received multiple reports of the charter boat named "Island Current III" allowing its customers to keep undersized cod during their trips. Last week, working closely with federal partners in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Office of Law Enforcement, state and federal officers conducted two boardings of the vessel Island Current III.
On March 17th, the vessel was boarded at the dock in Snug Harbor and officers discovered that the captain was found to be concealing several bags of what appeared to be undersized cod fish fillets and one whole undersized cod onboard the vessel.
On March 22nd while patrolling approximately 35 miles offshore, RI Environmental Police Officers observed the Island Current III actively fishing. As the patrol boat approached officers observed that several fish were being thrown overboard, after the vessel had been hailed and told to stand fast. The cod that were thrown overboard were recovered and found to be undersized along with other indications that the poachers had intended to maintain possession of the fish.

I went on a party boat. We were catching 20 lb.pollock and a blue fin tuna took my pollock. I screamed for the captain because I t5hough I was in to motor. He came down and told me it was a BIG BLUE FIN TUNA. Of course the Tuna pullied me off. I was on the rial holding on for dare life. Pissed me off.

Those set ups could reel in tuna - don’t need that heavy gear for 10lbs cod. Overkill. 👎🏻

What rod, reels , and line were you guys using? I'm teaching myself how to fish in my my mid 40s so I'm trying to learn as much as possible. The tribute to your father-in-law was very touching.

For deep-water fishing, I have a Penn Senator reel strung with 50lb mono. As the grounds are over 200 feet deep. For shallow in-shore squid fishing, I simply have a spinning reel strung with 15lb mono.

Depends. Early in the season, they take the long ride out to Cox's Ledge, which is two hours ride each way. Later in the season, they still go to Cox's occasionally, but mostly stay closer in near Block Island due to the whale migration zone restricting them to 10 knots.
