      I love satire and horror. I was looking forward to watching the movie because of the high rating it's getting and I'm familiar with the franchise.I thought this film was average 5/10. The constant 'shoving the meta commentary down your throat' got really annoying and the side characters were unlikable. The ending was satisfying, not great, not good. Just satisfying.

      Toxic fandom isn't a real issue. It's just when directors who ruin the franchise and don't respect the original source. This movie was good, but tried so hard to protect Rian Johnson who made the worst Star Wars film. Not liking a bad movie doesn't make you toxic, directors just can't take responsibility anymore.

    • @FilmSpeak
      @FilmSpeak  2 года назад +67

      @@clifflee54 I mean the fact that they call out legacy sequel filmmakers as well as toxic fandom shows they aren't just punching down. Also if you don't think toxic fandom exists, perhaps you should re-visit all the hatred that was thrown at Kelly Marie-Tran driving her off of social media after the release of TLJ. Also, I'm sorry, but Rian Johnson didn't elicit the sheer vitriol and venom hurled his way. He didn't egg anyone on. He was a filmmaker who was targeted and attacked for simply making a film and telling the best Star Wars story he thought he could. Any slight aggression on his part was almost entirely brought about by the constant dogging of toxic fans. This is just one example of toxic fandom, but I assure you it exists in many, MANY different formats across multiple franchises.

    • @clifflee54
      @clifflee54 2 года назад +28

      @@FilmSpeak KMT wasn't pushed off of social media from hate towards her. She never said it was for attacks on her, but the character. And people considered part of the toxic fandom, such as geeks and gamers, actually supported her. They hate Rose, not Kelly. Rian did an awful job. It felt nothing like a Star Wars movie, and relied a lot on humor. Shirtless Ben and Luke tossing his saber over his shoulder. Leia surviving in space. And much more. Not to mention the feminist Holdo that could've easily explained her plan, but instead had to stick it to the male. He called out all of the fans who agree with me. He was good with Knives Out, because he didn't ruin an established franchise. Most of the fanbases like this are the same way. You need to respect the source material. You can make changes, but not as crazy as tlj. The force communication for example was fine because it's not far fetched. And even if you want to talk about the new scream, they didn't just call out those fans that attack the actors, they mentioned what I stated above. Anybody who has an issue with the writing and storytelling is considered that. Richie explained all of that in the movie.

      i think it’s just the new cast weren’t developed properly. the whole point of requels is to bring in a new cast and bring back the legacy cast and mix the two together to create something perfect. i think the best they did with this is having dewey and the martha cameo in the randy meeks shrine living room interacting with the new final girls’ friend group and discussing requels and how most of them are goners from the get go and how the killers is sitting right next to them. it’s so creatively smart but the new characters don’t have any buildup due to deleted scenes and runtime which sucks cause i would’ve loved to see wes hicks more, judy hicks more since she’s a legacy character as well, as well as amber (before the reveal as ghostface), and also liv as she’s only here for the hilarious killer reveal and random red herring that goes no where but besides that i think the movie is very well done. 8/10 for me

      @huckfinn303 2 года назад +6

      That was one of two things that bugged me about this otherwise solid film. Sidney and Gale casually walking into the room right as the tension de-escalated was such a buzz kill for me. It was very much avoidable. As Sam was grabbing for the knife, Richie could have risen up and regained the upper hand, and Sidney and Gale could have come in to provide a distraction so that Sam could do her thing. Doing it that way would have balanced out Dewey's fateful distraction as well. Or, you know, since Sid was stabbed and Gale was shot, they could have slowly stumbled into the next room right after the kill, implying that they were too injured to get there any earlier. But no, just have them walk right on in LOL. I'm sure Sam appreciated that.
      The other thing that bugged me was more forgivable, considering this isn't the 1st Scream movie that did this. Gale was shot, Sidney was stabbed, and Sam got her fair share of injuries too, but let Sam walk around when the ambulances and police arrive, and give Sid and Gale a blanket. I don't know about you, but nothing satisfies a potentially life threatening injury like a good blanket lmao. Obviously they would all be taken to the ER, but not in this franchise 😆. Oh well, still a great film, despite the nitpicking.

    The original Scream film is my favorite horror film (though I have never found it scary). I was 14 when it came out in 1996 and it was a blast seeing in the theater for the first time with my dad! So many years later we just saw 5 along with my fiance :), and all three of us loved it. The first one will always be my favorite, but I never expect the FIRST film of anything when seeing a sequel. I think 5 is the best sequel so far, but Scream 2 is also very good (I like all of the sequels). Good for them ripping on the toxic fans! People need to chill, it's just MOVIES, it's art, enjoy it or go enjoy something else. It makes me sick seeing how nasty people get over something so petty. Mean nerds suck, just sad, angry little losers, lol.

  • @asinyne
    @asinyne 2 года назад +17

    None of the Screams are downright bad, but Scream 3 is the closest being just ok. 5 has plenty of points to praise it for, but it’s only pretty good to me; 1 is far and away the best, then it’s part 2, part 4, then this one, and finally 3. The writing here felt clumsier and pretty convenient, plus this film, being a part 5, is simply suffering from the laws of diminishing returns. Also, it has the problem of not being able to properly balance the new cast with the old. Other than Sam, Tara and Richie, the new cast of friends doesn’t get enough screen time to make me really care about them. Mindy was probably the best, but she was still a worse written Randy. Also, just because it calls out toxic fandom doesn’t automatically make it immune to criticism - people yelling “toxic fandom” when someone disagrees with this “requel” is what it is, but sometimes a film is still flawed regardless. And this one is. It’s not bad, but it’s far from great, and I disagree that it’s a perfect Scream movie or that it perfectly walks the tightrope. This is a 6/10, basically tied with part 4.

    I loved this film and thought it was great. As someone who likes TLJ a lot, I actually don’t mind seeing people state their problems with the film at all, but when people get aggressive and start Gatekeeping, and then trying to force you to hate the movie as much as they do it becomes toxic and ridiculous. This kind of behavior has been seeping into film discussion ever since that movie released and it’s just made film discussion worse.
    In comes Scream to absolutely rip modern film discourse a new one. I feel like this film was using the absolutely hyperbolic nature of the situation as a tongue-in-cheek warning. If people keep becoming radicalized by Geeks and Gamers, The Quartering, and other Anti-SJW Star Wars/Disney/film hitpiece channels, the events of this film could easily happen if someone is obsessed enough.
    Seeing people rip each other apart over films and film discourse after seeing this movie just makes me love the motive and message more and more. People are just proving this film’s point and it’s both scary and hilarious.
    On top of all this, it was just a great Scream movie in general and it’s my favorite of the sequels. The kills were brutal, Ghostface was unhinged in this film, the shots and cinematography with him were incredible and made him look really menacing. I really enjoyed the new characters, and the tone was great throughout.
    9/10 film for me!

      It takes two to tango, though. A lot of the toxicity started on twitter when Rian Johnson himself began acting childish toward people who didn't like his film ('mah deek' anyone?) and generally acting smug, refusing to suggest he could make improvements, etc. The smug, superior attitude that hollywood has towards fans, not just toxic fans, but fans in general, is part of the problem, and I don't think a movie that directly attacks that culture without addressing where it can often stem from is very helpful to the discourse; it just furthers the divide, and of course, if you're on the side of the line that the film stands with, it will seem like a victory.

      The filmmakers of the last jedi and plenty of other people in hollywood have brought it on themselves. They have spent the last few years saying that anyone who criticizes them are racist sexist alt right trolls. You can't just divide the fans of a classic franchise and then brush off all criticism and not expect people to be upset. Yes toxic fandom exists but there are also toxic people in hollywood that deserve to be called out. That being said I think the new scream did a good job of combining old elements with the new and was a better "requel" than most of the other movies that tried something similar.

    Your commentary really made me appreciate this film even more. The whole thing just completely clicked for me. I did really love it on my first viewing, but I had some conflicted feelings. I realized what it was when I watched this video. I honestly LOVE your entire take on this, and with it, I realized that my conflicts weren't about the plot at all, but with the characterization of the cast. Now don't get me wrong, I loved all of their performances, however, I do kinda feel that the movie didn't have as much time to develop some of the characters as it usually did with its predecessors. Take Scream 4 for example, I honestly connected with each and every character that formed Jill's friend group. Heck, many people, me included, were wondering about the fate of Kirby for years! (She survived yay!) However, I didn't really feel as much of a connection with this new cast. I appreciate their work and love of the franchise, but they didn't seem as compelling to me as the main characters meant to carry on the series. I think the primary reason for my feelings is the fact that we got our legacy characters way later on in the movie than I would've liked, and only with their arrival does the movie truly shine. I get what they were trying to do with that cast, but I would've liked them to stick with what works best with these movies for that part. It's almost a given that Legacy characters no longer have the LEADING roles in a requel, but I guess that didn't feel that convincing to me with this franchise because come on, Sidney, Gale, and Dewey will always be the face of the Scream movies. I think our main three arriving a bit earlier, and all working together with the new cast, could've enhanced the entire dynamic. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I felt that the new cast worked, but not as well when the movie was trying to paint them as the leads. It was awesome how both sisters got their closure with the killers and basically became the final girl(s), and I did think that constructing the ending around them was actually very nicely done. But it was nice because Sid and Gale were there as sort of supervisors, and that felt like the RIGHT way of blending the old and new. I just wish they had done this for the entirety of the film so that the first act of the movie could feel just as Screamy as the second and third act. Overall though, I'm really pleased with this addition, and as I said, this video made me feel even better about it.

    I disagree. Wes Craven ragged on Hollywood, not the fans. While toxic fandom IS a thing, they tried to push Rian Johnson as some kind of misunderstood genius. You can see it in Dewey. They gave him the Luke Skywalker treatment, turning him into a dreary, depressed, washed-up loser. He left Gale, because he didn’t like life in the city? Dewey wouldn’t do that! My problem is not that they killed him (or that they did so in such a stupid way), it’s that they killed his character first. This is the anti-Scream movie in that it takes shots the fans, not Hollywood tropes. They missed the entire point.

    Every time someone says "the Last Jedi was hated because it was different" I feel compelled to point out that it was hated because it was *disrespectful and destructive.* Rian Johnson has shown repeatedly in his Knives Out franchise that he, personally, has no respect for his audience or for genre fiction as a whole. He is a man that likes to take sledgehammers to old buildings, but has no plans to renovate. That irreverence and mindless destruction is what resulted in Rise of Skywalker- because Rian destroyed the foundation and left no blueprints to build upon. Hell, Glass Onion is basically a confession of this fact, though how intentional that was is debatable.
    *Different* is okay. *Destructive* can be okay, *as long as you have plans to build.* *Disrespectful* is not okay.
    Scream 5 succeeds where Last Jedi failed largely because Radio Silence are not irreverent- and indeed it would be unbelievably tasteless to be irreverent in a memoriam film.

    Scream is exactly what the audience wanted, a meta commentary on all the slasher films we used to watch growing up, or inject fun and personality into what was a subgenre of film that got a little stale. Not for me, but certiantly for all the audiences of the late 80's, particularly with holiday horror slasher and supernatural slasher. There was just too many slashers all copying one another and many copying Halloween. That is what created the template for a 80s slasher even though it was far from being the first. The facts of the matter is that Alice Sweet Alice, The Town that Dreaded Sundown, Madhouse, Black Christmas, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th and Peeping Tom being the actual first one, combined with Halloween is what sparked the subgenre. It helped amalgamate into Halloween, with the standouts being Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th which made a huge impact on horror at the time.
    Scream was ones first foray into slasher again for over a decade and made a big impact on me watching it as a adult. It made me love slasher alot even before I knew the term, I had to watch other films like it. So I found Valentine, My Bloody Valentine, Urban Legends, I Know what you did Last Summer, Child's Play 1-3, Leprechaun, Wishmaster, Candyman, Dentist, Dr. Giggles, Hellraiser and so forth that just kept on getting sequels and made horror what its regarded as like to do this day; creepy, scary, sinister, campy, cheesy, atmospheric, tense and tropey. I still highly treasure atleast most of those to this day.
    Scream is the kind of movie that will not be too serious about its subject matter, but goes kinda goofy and humorous when you think it should be much more serious or nonchalant. The killers are what the film is really about, its a whodunit at the end of the day and "Everybodies a suspect!". You want to figure it out along the way but atleast in the first 3 movies its really damn difficult. Perhaps not impossible but you can get the sense that this movie was on the pulse of slasher and horror by being the first to do a bunch of things we hadn't expected. Difficult to discern motives, killer that seems to get away with murder too easily but the victims seem to fight back effectively, the killer showing up where you don't expect him or her, and not to mention all the commentary. Whats the most scary thing about slashers and horror, how to get away with murder, what makes a person a killer, never blame movies for what people do e.t.c. You get all of this long before new generation period of slasher recently with a string of remakes and requels. This movie got there first on all counts. What keeps people coming back to scream is I think the killer and his or her motivation or perhaps multiple killers motivations and how that worked its way into a background plot.

    To me Scream 2022 was just another Scream sequel, it was OK, on par with Scream 3 and had many similarities with Scream 4. It had a few good moments but brought nothing new to the table and it became the very thing it was making fun of - in a bad way. For whatever reason I was convinced that the killer is gonna be Stuart from the original Scream but I was wrong, that would have been awesome. Seeing Billy Loomis back gave me goosebumps but Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox looked like they were forced to be on the set and their characters were poorly written, Dewey was by far my favourite character out of the old cast and out of the new cast Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega did a very good job. 6.5/10

  • @Isiah61

    12:17 except everyone else, unmasked the killer, and then shot them in the head. The way it happens in the movie its like Dewey forgot his keys or something, and not like he's done this four times before, read books about it, and seen eight movies of it being done before.

      So on the death itself. Ghostface stabs Dewey and then lifts him off the ground. Pretty coo...at the end it was reveal that Amber (looks about 17 and 108lbs) did that? This movie was pretty good until the reveals. Wanting to make a new better STAB franchise, wasn't that the reasoning of the last duo Ghostface?

    My issue with this toxic fandom angle is that it’s an easy out if your movie isn’t that strong..Which scream 2022 is not that strong. So now if you don’t like it it’s very easy for someone to say “well you are the exact toxic fans the movie is referencing” when really it’s a movie with many issues. Definitely some cool parts but the bad outweighs the good in my opinion.

      Scream was a decent film but there is a many things i did not like about the film like the actor who played sam carpenter did a terrible job. Also they shouldn't have had half the people that ghostface attacked survive because it's a horror movie most of the victims should be killed off. Also they shouldn't have killed off dewy , his character is way more powerful then the rest of the og cast.

I actually had to go back and rewatch the originals to confirm if I was missing something, or maybe I had loved the originals from a purely nostalgic point of view; And, nope, that's not what it was at all, this new film just sucked. ****SPOILERS BELOW*****
    I watched it a bunch of times and I really do like it. I've had some minor issues, but overall the characters are really great in this one. I think Tara has the best part / performance. I didn't know how she was going to hang in there or make it until the end, but I was pleasantly surprised. Mason and Jasmin were great and I was SO happy they both made it. Sam was.....just ok for me. She's going to have to up her game if there are sequels. I don't know, she's no Sidney. But no one will ever be so....I also not crazy about the Billy Loomis visions. They did a good job with the de-aging, but it felt shlocky. They could have developed Vince just a tad bit more. I picked out the killers as soon as the trailer hit. But I think they made it super obvious on purpose and I really don't think it took away from the reveal at all.
    That being said, Sid, Dewey, and Gale killed it this time. They were badass and it was the best acting they've done in all the movies, in my opinion. "You killed my best friend! F**k you!!! Enjoy that torch!!!!!!" And Dewey's death was sad but necessary. It did help the story along. They easily didn't need to stop for that inhaler at that party. And seriously , what the hell were Sidney and Gale doing in the kitchen while Sam was killing Ritchie in the next room? Having a cocktail? Toasting torching Amber? Minor issues aside, it was a terrific entry. Great analysis!

    Scream 2022 is the type of movie that will only be propped up by the sequel that follows it. By itself it’s an okay scream movie. But, if the stories they tell based off the seeds they started to plant in this movie, it has potential to be part of a great trilogy. Ghostface was the only shinning light in this movie, and NOT the killers under the mask either. Richie and Amber were red flags a mile away and when they were revealed, I was critically underwhelmed. I was upset that they didn’t trick me with a fast one…instead they struck me out mentally with a floating slow ball.

    There's a lot to be said in it's favour, but perfect? It fell short in one really major way for me - the killers were more obvious in this one than any others; now you can argue that Scream 2 and Scream 6 cheat quite a bit in terms of hiding their killers' identities, but even taking that into account, I immediately suspected both of the actual killers on their first introduction and was never really given a reason to change my mind. I've not successfully identified the killers on first watching any of the others, so I found that disappointing. Also not sure it fully holds together (which is weird given that I was also convinced who the killers were) for a number of reasons:
    (1) The opening attack on Tara was too frenzied for the killers to be sure she'd survive, and they really need her to survive
    (2) Richie must have been in Woodsboro for the opening attack on Tara and somehow got quickly back to Sam in order to return to Woodsboro with her. Logistical nightmare at the very least
    (3) How confident does Richie have to be for this plot to play out? He was so sure he'd be able to charm his way into Sam's life, and so sure that she'd let him accompany her back to Woodsboro (and so confident that Sam would go; the way her and Tara's relationship is played in the early part of the movie that's far from a given, and whilst you could argue that he got to know Sam so well he could predict her return, the plan pre-dates him getting to know her)
