This is great! "Use it as a compliment to the groove that's happening." Let it be free, fantastic! Thanks Keith! Great way to incorporate hi-hat instead of quarters or 8ths all night! David Curtis Drumming
Keith has got to be the best young drummer going right now! The best video I've seen him shine is a live Steely Dan "Aja" vid on You Tube. Check it out if you haven't seen it. Blew my mind, & left me asking who the heck is this dude w/the sticks? Following his career since.
HH chick as a complement to the groove that's happening. The "chick" integrated into a rock 16th note setting and not have it just be a limb keeping time. It's simple and brilliant things like this that can get you gigs with John Mayer. And the fact that he admits he doesn't know that he's playing a HH hemiola 4:3 in a clinic where most other guys would anylize and explain it just kicks ass.
It's crazy but I almost *don't like when incredibly good drummers talk about things like polyrhythms and paradiddles and break down the "math" (like Keith said) behind what they're doing. For me it's like a magician showing you how he does all of his tricks before he actually does them. I just love watching, listening and hearing them talk about what inspires them and maybe a LITTLE bit about how they approach they're style and practicing...etc. It's just a weird me thing.
He has always been great at explaining what he's doing - totally open about his awesome drumming technique.
Thank you for these videos! Love his playing!
Very groovy left foot hi-hat pattern. I love it :)

@benediktstehle that's the answer to the question "what's keith carlock's time signature?"
feel and character over counting and technique!
