It's so nice when you hear the drums as just ONE instrument. Not the bass drum here, the snare there, it's just one cohesive sound. It never stops, not even when soloing or filling in. So good, amazing. To me, this is the right approach to play the drums.
I love the open sound, a lot like Stanton Moore. Which makes me think that KC may have studied 2nd line drumming, which is the most fun thing to learn anyway.
That's some sweet virtuoso precision drumming! Damn his ghost notes and rolls are fantastic and the entire kit sounds ace. Very unique touch and groove. Love it!
Hadn't noticed how much he uses fingertips only (esp right hand), and how much power he gets even when choking up on the stick - those side angle video shots are great.
Right. The loose grip allows him to get a great sound on the drums...because the sticks are allowed to vibrate. The right hand on the ride cymbal is all French grip...this is what I always notice about his playing.
@@howtobeatadrum and with his left hand traditional grip, it looks like the stick keeps sliding out so that he is barely hanging onto the butt end, and keeps readjusting. I do love his feel and sound.
I think about the Moeller technique like swinging a hammer; the instance that hammer makes contact and all the force imparts energy into the target, you can loosen up your grip so all the energy of momentum is in the tool (hammer or stick) and not in your hand, so your hand doesn't absorb so much of the vibrations; it's easier on the hands, more efficient, and on drums it gets you a more dynamic rebound and therefore better tone. It's like throwing the stick at the target and catching it again. You get a real nice snap and resonance because of the perfect, undampened rebound.
Keith is easily on my Top 3 drummers list. His style and groove are like none other. The only person who has a better ghost note groove is David Garibaldi.
OK, with traditional grip I'm amazed how far back he holds his stick. And with his matched grip he holds the stick so far up! Bottom line- whatever you feel comfortable with.
If I didn't see the title of the video, and judging just by the thumbnail, I thought this was Ray Luzier lol. I like how the drums are set up. Although I only have an e-drum kit.
Awkward technique but seriously effective. Some of his fills leads to more than a little head scratching. Usually based around rudiments so you have to try and break it down to work out what he's playing.
Pity you can't spell 'Keith' but that is fucking disgusting comment. He is being judged as a BRILLIANT drummer not a candidate to win The Tour de France.
Perhaps, but the context is worth considering: Philip says "old" Keith. Carlock is known to have gone through a conscious, significant and positive transformation in his health and fitness shortly after this video came out (about ten years before Hudson posted it here). I think the comment was intended as a fan chiding a 'buddy', more than a malicious insult. :)
When a drummer like Dave Weckl refers to a certain lick as "Carlock-ian", you KNOW you've made yourself heard! 👍🙂‼️
I've heard John Mayer say something like that regarding Eric Johnson and I thought the same thing

Study The Greats: Keith Carlock is a must watch.
Keith plays such a deep groove, you just can’t help getting pulled into it. Fantastic player, one of my favorites.
I love the open sound, a lot like Stanton Moore. Which makes me think that KC may have studied 2nd line drumming, which is the most fun thing to learn anyway.
Fantastic! Keith Carlock's rolls and ghost notes are the smoothest. Love that loose kick drum sound together with a tight snare.
one of my favorite drummers in the last 20 years
He's got such a unique groove...always get inspired watching Keith! Fantastic drummer
Ha! as I'm listening to this, my wife said "Now THAT'S a good drummer!"
I don't disagree :)
That's some sweet virtuoso precision drumming! Damn his ghost notes and rolls are fantastic and the entire kit sounds ace. Very unique touch and groove. Love it!
I'm not crazy about the kick sound, but I'm listening to this on my phone, so I could be wrong. Awesome drummer. Dude needs a fan tho.
Keith is hands down one of the sickest drummers of these days! What a groove, pocket and sound!
That drumsound fits the music PERFECTLY
WOW! The rolls!!! They come out of nowhere and stick in the middle of the groove.
Love the dedication to technique and watching it pay off.
Great drummer! Great sounding Kit! Perfect, thanks...
Wonderful ! He's a perfect drummer with a perfect sound .
Every Oz Noy's album is a masterpiece! But I like the most Oz's tunes with Keith behind the drums!
Such a pleasure to watch and listen to him real kool player such a different style ❤️👏👍
What an incredible left hand control and feel dam I always knew it was good but the closer I look and listen the more Im impressed.
So well put!!
the kick sound amazing !! beatiful kit and cymbals!
Agree! Most drum kits do sound great when you dont cover them with tape or put pillows in the bass drum :)
Wow, that was absolutely amazing, going to follow his career and see him live now that I know who he is and how electrifying he can play!,
He synchs it up so well to the guitar its making it impossible for me to stop paying attention to that super stylized guitar lick going on
Excellent groove!
amazing sound bass drum
insane drumming 👌🏽🔥🔥🔥
Go Keith with your in depth grooves!!!! Cheers , Jeroen Simons, Independent, ex-Epica.
I LOVE YOUR DRUMMING dear Keith ! friendships ! Of France !
Wow, I love everything about this music!
Amazing groove bro
Hadn't noticed how much he uses fingertips only (esp right hand), and how much power he gets even when choking up on the stick - those side angle video shots are great.
One of my all time favorites.
Great drummer. Bizarre technique, but you can’t argue with the results.
Bruce Hewat Agree
Moeller technique. It works very well for the sound he gets. Although his grip looks like he's about to drop his sticks!
Right. The loose grip allows him to get a great sound on the drums...because the sticks are allowed to vibrate. The right hand on the ride cymbal is all French grip...this is what I always notice about his playing.

I love his style and his drums sound fantastic! Hopefully one day I’ll be on his level or close! Beat them skins!!!
Very Mike Clarkesque. That funky drummer beat, Great.
organic groove ! I LOVE IT !
The touch!
Keith is easily on my Top 3 drummers list. His style and groove are like none other. The only person who has a better ghost note groove is David Garibaldi.
very cool, good groove hes got his own thing going on
OK, with traditional grip I'm amazed how far back he holds his stick. And with his matched grip he holds the stick so far up! Bottom line- whatever you feel comfortable with.
goosebumps!
this guy must be enhanced by aliens - such impossible syncopation, dynamics, precision, whew.
How awesome is this 🙂
This is pretty cool. I'm surprised with how far back he holds his left stick he's able to get that much control.
And that right hand as well!
We first saw Keith with Steely Dan in 2003 and were blown away by his command of the kit. Did he leave Gretsch? It looks like he went back to Yamaha.
incredible!
Smooth as silk!! Yeah!
Great groove and sound. He does remind me of Jake from two and a half men ...
If I didn't see the title of the video, and judging just by the thumbnail, I thought this was Ray Luzier lol.
I like how the drums are set up. Although I only have an e-drum kit.
Love how he plays with drums completely open. He must spend hours tuning and obviously has it licked.
Please put out a drum "Play Along" version of this song.
love it!!
mashed up...at 2 minutes it develops a 2nd line feel, very cool.
Anyone know the model of his left-side snare?
Keith sounds so much like Keith.
Finally!
still dope
Is it too much to ask for Kieth to play at my funeral. Holy hell....
Love it, nice
He’s got his own groove.....
can you play some Where Eagles Dare for us back home in Mississippi?
so tight
Go boy go , makes me wanna jam NOW at 1:20 am
YES
Anyone knows what snare he's playing here? 😊
Wow!!
Keath Carlock is surely groovy groovy groovy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He reminds me of Ray luzier
Ali A It’s a totally different way of playing, actually.
I think Ali A means in a visual way (look his face, and forget about the body size ;-), not the playing techniques
Keith has more swing and his groove is incomparable.Far away from Luzier
Chris Reb Right.
ANDRE SIQUEIRA It’s Apples and Oranges. Ray is an amazing rock drummer with an amazing rock feel.
Great Drummer!
His kick sounds massive on that recording
Just remove the muffle
Ray luzier's brother? 😂
great sound and energy!
except that Keith plays music that actually is interesting and sounds good
I've seen him live with Steely Dan.
Oh my goodness.
the aliens have landed on earth
His weird technique is actually really cool haha
❤😊
That's weird with your snare tilted away from him . I'm gonna try that
This is the way a drumset is engineered to be heard.
Not all choked to shit with ring mufflers, tape and moon gels all over it.
Free your drums.
That's gotta be Mike Stern on guitar?!
Yiieww! Your Boi has pocket
Its all in the tongue placement.
Awkward technique but seriously effective. Some of his fills leads to more than a little head scratching. Usually based around rudiments so you have to try and break it down to work out what he's playing.
And he properly tunes his drums!!! So many drummers tune their drums like crap.
If he was in a famous band, drummers will be talking about his groves for years to come
calvintrainer1212 he’s been in a few really famous bands.
He’s been the main drummer for Steely Dan since 2000. They have quite a pedigree of drummers over their career so Keith is in anvery elite class.
Been in a few famous bands. The trouble is that the only notable bands these days are the ones that go back 40 years. Nothing new worth noting.
I mean, he plays with his FINGERS and it's as powerful as anybody else's full-swing stroke. Just phenomenally masterful.
Funky
☀👍👍👍👍👍☀
Have you seen Carlock,lately???
You’ll be shocked!!!!!!
no, why? I'll bite...
I miss his Yamaha sound.
Dogdrum agreed
Dogdrum I don’t
@@ickysticky3672 I do.
if dave likes it so do i
Ed hates when u don’t use toms as passing notes .
Old Kieth hasn’t been missing any meals.

Por un momento pense, que gordo esta Ray Luzier....
hoooooo na tta peezdyets
He looks like Ray Luzier. Or vice versa
Ich bin jetzt echt kein Tänzer, aber wie kann man da nur ruhig Sitzen?Ha Ha Ha 😁👍 let's Groove
Nice . I don't like the talking but music is groovy
Keith Carlock = Ebel Perrelli
Someone who knows how to tune a bass drum. *Wide open*.. is where it's at. Large sound from a small bass drum.
Son is nice!!!!
Is Keith the lost brother of Ray Luzier? lololol :D
Tシャツ
That’d be an awkward gig to play.
