    Update: Ok, so I've recently been looking at some candid shots of Mary Pickford at home and I suspect the method she is describing here may be what she used on her days off. Her hair has a much more natural look and lacks the perfect structure typically seen in her movies and in publicity photographs (her hair also was pinned up and not down in her famous ringlets). I am now of the opinion this routine may be genuine, but I still highly doubt it was used to create her signature look nor the photos for this article (which are pretty clearly staged)! Kid curlers are the way to go if you want that style!

    Pickford's hairstyle was completely for entertainment purposes. After all, she was billed as, "America's Sweetheart". Young woman of her era would have her hair either pinned up (it was a rite of passage) or in a flapper style. Only girls wore their hair down, with those voluminous curls and waves. My grandmother who was about her age, never wore her hair down. It was always styled in a bun or a French roll. Only the family ever saw her hair unpinned/secured.

      I think Mary's curls had a lot to do with her playing younger roles. Most of the characters she played were children, so the curls played into that. She did wear her hair up in films though, often to denote her character getting older. For example, in the film "Daddy Long Legs" (which is where I borrowed the footage from for this video), she starts with braids and curls and then ends up with an up-do by the end of the film, as her character goes from young child to young woman. "Pickford style" curls so also work well as a base for updos. I've always loved how Mabel Normand rocked some great ringlets pinned up into all sorts of interesting updos.

    I love this! Yes, she definitely curled her beautiful just like your tutorial. I agree with her attitude to do as little as possible in the way of washing or heating the hair though. I just use water and keep my hair clean by brushing and having a very clean brush. It's improved my hair so much.

    The better way to wet and rinse hair was with a shampoo hose. They were made of something akin to rubber. One end fit the faucet, the other had a wide round head with little nubs around to massage the scalp. You can still find them on Google search.

      I feel like her curl secret must be that she had naturally curly hair to begin with. If you have the right curl pattern you can achieve this look by finger curling each individual strand of wet hair and then letting it dry. It's silly of her to assume though that anyone can do it 😂

    If she had naturally curly hair, the technique she describes at around 7:35 would actually work really well and get the curls she is known for. It’s similar to finger coiling, which is still used by people with curly hair today.

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  2 года назад +2

      She did likely have somewhat naturally curly hair and she may have used that curling technique in her earlier filming days. Her hair definitely had a much more natural and less sculpted look early-on in her career. Once she became a big star though, if you closely inspect photos of her you can see that there has been curlers or a curling iron used especially along the top (verified by the fact that she did admit to using kid curlers). These old magazine articles are often pretty disingenuous!

    I have hair that, if I wind it in my fingers when it's damp (more of a vertical twist/twirl than the horizontal wrap around the finger you tried) it really does fall in those pickford ringlets if it's long enough. It's genetic though; my mum has thick, very wavy auburn/ginger hair, and my dad has dark brown hair that if he let it grow, would've been kind of afro/frizzy (he's white tho so it's not tight curls). I had strawberry blonde ringlets as a small child as my hair has always been very fine, I just had a LOT of it. I had no idea how to look after it in high school and it wasna frizzy mess that was the lovechild of hermione granger and dylan moran; ironically now after I lost so much hair from my health stuff it's falling into ringlets easier with almost no provoking and has that particular, um, Edwardian fluffiness as it's growing back

    Does Mary had naturally curly hair as well, so all the curling procedures she used had been easier and long lasting because of her natural structure?

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  Год назад +1

      I'm pretty sure she had some natural curl/wave (which you can see in early photos), although her "famous curls" were definitely created through styling and didn't just happen as magazines from the time would like you to believe!

      I dye my hair with henna (a natural plant-based dye), and sometimes some of the excess pigment stains things when my hair is wet during the first few washes.

    Your hair is so beautiful, what brand or brands of henna do you favor? Do you use a special recipe?

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  4 года назад +2

      Thanks! I typically buy an organic pure henna powder from a small local salon that specializes in henna (she imports it directly from India I believe). I like my hair as red as possible, so I use the henna powder mixed with water and 1 tbsp each of hibiscus powder and alma powder.

    • @wyrdwitch13
      @wyrdwitch13 4 года назад

      @@TheLongHairedFlapper thank you so much! I read that amla adds an ash tone, does that mean a cooler shade of red or what?

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  4 года назад +1

      My mix was designed for me by the local salon I buy from, so I'm not entirely sure what the amla is in there for... She added it to my mix about a year ago and I haven't really noticed a significant color change (there may be a subtle one but not that I've noticed). I think it's mostly in the mix for its moisturizing and conditioning properties and the hibiscus is there to boost the red tones. I like the colour so I've never really questioned the recipe lol.

      @@TheLongHairedFlapper wow, that's really cool! Thanks again :) I used henna for over a decade and loved it so much. Just spent past 2 years growing out my natural hair but didn't care for it. So now it's back to henna for me! I used to buy some from a spa in Portland called Silk & Stone, it goes quite dark. I also love Light Mountain red & bright red. I also add hibiscus to the mix :) Happy henna-ing!

    8:48 it is because your hair is already straight. Mary's hair was curled since birth. As we can see in her child photos.

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  3 года назад +1

      She definitely enhanced her curls through the use of kid curlers though. We have firsthand accounts that verify this. Naturally curly hair just doesn't fall into those perfectly formed, smooth ringlets/waves without help. Her hair was so tied into her persona, so I'm not surprised she fibbed a bit in this article (if she even wrote it. It may have been ghost-written by a publicist or someone from the magazine who wouldn't really have known the real details of her hair care).

      Sorry for all the questions, just curious. Maybe you could make a video about it - if you haven't already.

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  2 года назад

      @@muskndusk They were called "kid curlers" as they were typically made from kid leather (which is a soft, thin type of leather). They are oblong-shaped tubes, sewn at the edges, with a wire in the middle. The hair is wrapped around, as you would with a normal curler, then the ends of the curler are folded inwards to hold it in place.
      I made a video ages ago where I made myself a pair using felt instead of leather: ruclips.net/video/9RqReJEosJs/видео.html They work really well!
