- This week's video is a quick look into some of the many hair waving devices of the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s, including a peak at my antique hair waver collection. There really were too many waving methods/tools to mention all of them, so this video is a only brief overview with a focus on some of the less-discussed methods.

Apologizes to those of you experiencing audio-volume difficulties with this video. This video was made back when I still used my computer speakers to edit. While it doesn’t affect everyone, the music seems to play louder than intended through some devices, especially headphones. There is unfortunately no way of fixing it on this older video. However, all my newer content is made using an upgraded mic and is edited with a special pair of headphones. This has greatly improved the sound quality, so if you like my content but not the sound please consider giving my newer videos a watch instead!
My great grandmother curled all the ladies hair in the neighborhood. My grandmother told me she would warm the iron on the stove and then use sheets of toilet paper to check how hot the iron was and if it was safe to use on their hair
I asked my grandmother years ago how they kept their hair in place in the 30’s and she said beaten egg whites. She was born in 1919. (In case anyone else was curious how they did it.)

Actually...that's very interesting...and good to know for people who can't use things like hairspray, gels, etc, and need REAL all natural products vs anything chemically made.

OH! WOW! 😳 im shocked! I can see why. I used sugar water when I was in high school if I didn't have hair spray and I had hairspray resin in my hair. I have always loved hair styles and tools but I haven't thought a lot about the true history and I'm loving the stories I'm finding. And this is a hugh discovery and so exciting!
I have my hair in pin curls at this moment and I'm fixing to try my hand and finger waving 😍 I've accidentally made those waves many times when I was wanting full curls ..lol..

Those last clips ( the double waves I think) were my favourite as well - they have such a defined result and didn't pull on the hair like the earlier ones you showed us did. If you knew someone who worked with metal, you could take detailed photos and they could make more, because then you could do a whole set with just those
I've actually looked into making some replicas in the past, but I couldn't find any way of getting it done that wouldn't be super expensive. It's on my wish-list of future projects though! I love them so much and it would be great to have a full set. (I did actually try bending some thick wire to DIY my own. Sadly, those didn't work out too well...)
@@TheLongHairedFlapper Try a farrier with a forge...not all farriers hot shoe or build shoes...but some do. I had one farrier fix a bent stirrup for me in his forge. Mobile farriers tend to tow their forges. Never know who you'll find that has the skill to craft...it's an art.
...OR...(just thought of this) a machinist (not machine worker...different people). My father creates things that can't be found, or don't exist, all the time. This might be more difficult...need to find someone with his own equipment or access to equipment. Not very many of them left, but they still exist. I'd look for a farrier first...more of them around, but you never know what's available in your area.
Maybe someone who may be able to 3D print some?

Thank you for this. I'm a historical fashion scholar and costumed museum interpreter. If your area has them, I strongly recommend going to a Black hair store. It's easier to find good long wave clips there, and larger stores occasionally have wave irons.
In hairdressing school we learnt how to do finget waves and pin curls in alternate directions Gives great wave results👍🏾

We had a book of styles we had to perfect and had to test using traditional Marcel irons (which absolutely are still made in the same size and shape) But a firm setting lotion and a finger wave/ cutting comb is all that's needed. My grandmother and her sister both told me of growing up doing rag curls (also an accurate thing) pin curls and finger waves. I've actually got a fresh finger wave set drying now that I'll brush out in the morning

Yesterday I found this video and became obsessed with the double wave clip. But I couldn't find a modern equivalent and vintage ones are hella expensive. So I made one out of thick guage baling wire I have in the garage. And so far its working😁!! I'm gonna make more for the rest of my hair tomorrow! If it weren't for your video, I would never have know about these! Thank you so much! 💙

My mom told me how her mom (my grandma) could make her own hair wave in this manner, by merely using her fingers on her freshly washed hair. Sigh! Hope you & everyone else reading this is keeping well : )

Aw, thank you :) And that's so neat she was able to create a wave with just her hands! I've read tutorials for that in the past but it is such a difficult skill to master.
2:05 that's what my grandma was talking about when she said they'd plug their curling irons into a light socket. Notice that the plug looks almost exactly like a light bulb base. I pictured a modern curling iron only without the cool tip, just metal and her sticking it into a light socket and wondered why they didn't get electrocuted doing that.
I've tried Marcel waves, and it's probably my fault, but they always turn out so frizzy! For an early 20's look, I can't beat my modern foam wet curlers :)
I'm so glad to have found this channel..I loving the 1920s styles and I want to learn how to do some & a few other era's. I love the little history lesson in the beginning. And seeing some of the old tools😍exciting 💋
The figure 8 type were recreated by Conair in the 90s! I had them as a kid. The prong was pink and then you clip a purple piece onto the end to hold the figure 8 hair onto the prong. They made the most intense tight curl!
It also helps to start with some product build up. It will help the styles hold better. Dippity do before you put your curlers in at night and then hairspray to set the style in the morning works well for me. Freshly washed hair is very difficult to work with.
I bet the double barrels wave tongs shown at the end could be used with a hair dryer. Not heatless, of course, but at least you could see how effective it would be without needing to worry it is far too hot from heating on the stove. Lol I used to have a wave iron in the 80/90s. It was a bit chunkier and worked like a crimper, so similar but was hard to get right up to the scalp. Not sure how well that style would make marvel waves.

I personnally really love those late 10s early 20s buns and I found out that a voluminous 20s ppsyche knot looks rather nice on myself but I cannot curl my hair properly to have the perfect ammount of fluff for the early 20th century: It's either so kinky that i cannot pull it in any way or it so loose that it will fall off within hours
I always wondered how they waved their hair so tight and neat! 👏

Where could I buy these double wave clips? These are brilliant 😍
The old irons aren't impossible to use, modern curling irons are generally set from 90C to 150C, (maximum is 200C if I remember correctly, but that is on the hot side). With the old type irons you can use a paper or a cotton fabric to test and take the first heat. We never make this type of wave anymore, but the "dinky little clips" you mention early in the video gives the neatest and best curls when used with a curling iron or sponge roller curls. One method is to let the curls cool in the coil (clip them), then a bit of hair spray when you loosen them (or use setting lotion when you set the curls in rollers), then brush the hair and use your fingers to shape the curl, then the "dinky" curved clips to hold it. It gives the neatest, most even waves and looks very good. (I think it is because you start with a very even set curl and dry hair). It is finicky to get it nice and flawless and some type of hair is easer than others. It is like you mention too, lots of ways to get them done. I have seen when they make finger waves in wet hair, and the result can be very nice. It helps if the hair has light waves naturally. I have never seen so many different irons and clips as in your collection :- )

I just used mervin metal wave clips. Clip not slide. There also plastic 3 wave CONAIR create RETRO WAVES, in a bag, there brown plastic and work amazing. I put them in the back of my hair. I may have got 6 years ago? I also have the 3 barrel curling iron.
What I came to see on the video was the differences between the other years previous of the 1930s I wanted to specifically see when it really changed and what the differences the research I’ve done was longer slicker hairstyles in the 30s and fluffier less liked your head and then 1920s was more gel down to the head🎉
My two grandmothers;One on my dad’s side used saved 🌧 water,and clip s.And on my mom’s side.She had a beauty shop w/many options.At16yrs old in beauty school,she had to go down several floors to practice make up, and hair on dead ☠️ ones in the morgue 😰

You got my old great-grandmother's hairdo.
You need this clips not for waving on their own. In addition there are blended combs. You fingerwave your hair in an s pattern with your hand and a fine normal comb. For the vale you use the blended combs to hold it for the mountain top you use the clips to secure the s pattern. I did it like my grandma told me, worked. She had no natural curls, I have.

Where did you get your wave clips? I am having a difficult time finding some.
All of mine have been purchased from Etsy. They are a bit on the rare side, so sometimes you need to wait until some come on the market. Two shops that often carry them are Rumbleseatcat and RetroCoiffure, although neither seem to have any at the moment. Sometimes they are listed under "wavers" and sometimes "wave clips", so it can be helpful to search both terms. (I have occasionally also seen them mislabeled as "curlers", so sometimes you can get lucky by searching for vintage curlers). They have gone up in price since I purchased most of mine and a full set can be rather expensive. Purchasing single clips from various sellers to build your own set can sometimes be a cheaper option.

I would think they would probably work fine on thick hair. They really only wave the very top layer of hair, so how thick the hair is overall shouldn't matter too much.

Noooo! So THATS what they were! 😭 When my grandmother passed (decades ago) she had 2 vintage cigar boxes FULL of wave clips and other hair gadgets tucked away in her bathroom!
She had also drawn the fake seam up the back of her leg during WW2 to remain classy while donating her thigh high nylon stockings to the soldiers (her soldier in mind) during WW2. Obviously she didn’t have the 1920s wave at that time. She would’ve been a teen in the 1920s. During WW2, she always had shoulder length spirals. She literally rocked the “Rosie the Riveter” do w a polka dot bandana tied Tupac style! Most of her scarves were that weird sheer.... nylon?
I remember sleeping w her as a small child when I spent the night. (Grandpa died unexpectedly at 47) She wore the weird nylon scarves over her foam curlers. I remember asking her why she wore them (curlers) if they made her cuss and cry so much. She laid in 1 position on her back ALL night (“just talking to Jesus”) 😂 so as not to mess her perfect curls.
She kept the same hair do as she did during WW2... all the way until the day she died. It suited her so well. She was a doll. Jet black shiny curls, cobalt blue eyes, and naturally rose lips. An artist couldn’t have painted a more well defined Cupid’s bow on her top lip. All on pale white porcelain skin. Although she grew up a farm girl from Kansas, she protected her perfect skin from the sun.
I’m so sorry. I completely went down some sort of memory lane. However, I won’t say I digress. She was a porcelain doll. Videos like these remind me of her. Thank you.
Back to those cigar boxes... she had SO many antique beauty products, hair clips, curling irons... JEWELRY! (Those wire ear shaped ear clips that slip behind your ear. They’re covered w rhinestones. They look like rhinestones are clipped from the very tip of your cartilage and follow your ear all the way down to the lobe. SETS AND SETS of those!
They had sentimental value to her. She had boxes belonging to her mom. Antique Make-up is yuck, but the Vintage glass containers it came in were fabulous! Some were still sealed. I can’t forget the short heavy gold tubes of lipsticks! Idk if they were from the 20’s or 30’s? I do know grandma said “Fooey! Put that down!” I also know there were DOZENS still SEALED.
Sadly, When she died, my mom literally took the drawers and dumped them in the garbage without even looking. (Grandma was her mother-IN-LAW.) So there was no love lost in parting w the makeup, etc. Or as mom called it...”piles of vintage CRAP”.
No matter how much I begged. It broke my ❤️. I remember mom saying , “Do YOU even know what these things are?!” OK! Then were NOT keeping trash! I wish I had YOU back then. 😂
It was b4 cell phones so I couldn’t take a pic and Google search. I didn’t even know what to call them to begin looking! 😂 So sad. Grandma held on to them all those years... so my mom could trash them. Well...Now I know what they were. Why she kept them so long? That Still remains to be answered.
Oh, that's such a shame she threw them away! Vintage/antique hair clips and makeup items are quite rare and rather collectable (at least nowadays, not sure what the market was like back then). Thank you so much for sharing your interesting reminiscences of your Grandmother :)

Wave clips can be very difficult to find (I typically buy antique ones off of Etsy or Ebay), but you can find pins for pin-waving from places like Sally Beauty Supply. Just look for the larger size of hair pins (not bobby pins! I show comparison between the two styles in my recent "DIY historical curlers" video). You can technically also use the smaller size but they are much more fiddly and difficult to put in.

Thanks! I've heard of the podcast Dressed but I don't think I've ever listened to any episodes. I usually only listen to podcasts when I'm knitting, so most of the ones I listen to (or watch, in the case of video podcasts) are knitting related. Question: in hair school, I was taught how to finger wave. Did women of this era not do finger waves? When was finger waving used?
They did use finger waves, although usually in conjunction with either clips or a pre-existing perm. It was also more of a professional technique rather than something women were doing at home. (There were just too many different techniques/ tools available during this time period to fit them all into one video! As such, this video isn't meant to be a comprehensive list and is more focused on some of the lesser known at-home options 🙂)

HI and thank you for making this! I have just discovered these vintage waving products. My finger waving just dosent work. NOw I am hunting for the mervin clips, althogh I like the solo ones better...hmmmmm where to find.......but best I can find for Mervin are 3 for 350 USD!!! BASICALLY around $100 each. I am willing to spend some mulaah but Im not rich...I just love the ease of the clips. Ebay, Etsy any other suggestions on where to find them? I will watch more of your videos and I subscribed. Sadly they have gotten very expensive. Back when I bought mine you could still find wave clips for $30ish per clip, but they have increased so much in value over the last few years that I've had to stop collecting them. My only suggestion is to look for rusted clips or slightly damaged clips. Usually they can be cleaned with a bit of steel wool and tend to be priced cheaper (if you can find them in the first place!).

If you want to know if a hot iron or curling iron is too hot, simply press tissue paper. If it turns brown, you know it's too hot... wait to put that to the hair.. Pretty simple.
I've heard that trick but I've always been too nervous to try it. I suppose I worry the burn rate of the tissue paper may differ depending on thickness, dyes, flame retardants etc and with my luck I'd rather not risk it 😅
FYI: After heating iron, you test it with paper to cool it down.

Which sort were you looking for? The good metal clip-style ones don't really have a modern equivalent, but the antique ones totally still work. I use antique metal wavers all the time! Some of the other styles may have a modern source though (such as the flexible roll-up style) so if you give me a few more details I might have a few suggestions 🙂

What is the name of this thing "double wave"? Where can you buy it?
The antique double wave clips I have don't have a brand name on them. I've always just seen them called double wave clips or sometimes just wave clips. They are rather rare but come up occasionally for sale on Etsy or Ebay.
I suppose instead of trying to sleep in them, they'd perhaps use a dryer hood to fully dry and set the style.
That's possible. Many women may also have just let them set over the course of the morning at home (under a scarf or dusting cap), and then taken them off later in the day.

What products would you recommend to put in the hair ie gels mousse cream pomade ect
I don't really have any experience with modern products such as gels and mousses, so I'm afraid I can't give you any recommendations in regards to which is best. When it comes to wet-sets, I often just use water alone and a long setting time (the waves/curls will last all day if I set it long enough). When I do want a bit of extra hold, I usually use a historical curling lotion. I think I made a video with a recipe a while back (it's basically a mix of gum arabic, sugar, and rose water).
For a wet set, lotta body works well. If your doing hair care...i like avocado oil or jojoba oil.

Great video! The music is just a bit too loud and distracting which makes it hard to understand what you are saying.
Sorry about that! Different speakers tend to play the audio differently and sometimes I have a hard time judging how things will sound on other peoples machines. (When I play it through my computer speakers I can actually barely hear the music, but it's much louder when I'm wearing headphones. I usually optimize my videos for headphones now, but I may have been using my speakers back when I edited this.)

They are fairly collectable antiques, so your best bet is somewhere like Etsy or Ebay. They are relatively rare but they do come up for sale often if you keep an eye out for them. I usually use search terms such as "wave clips", "wavers", "metal curlers", "metal hair clips" or look for a specific brand name such as "Mervin".
I just can't get waves and curls to work in my hair. I'd need a perm and no one will agree to perm my hair. 😒

Sorry about that. This is one of my older videos, which I used to edit using my computer speakers. I'm not sure why, but the audio levels seem to vary quite a bit between computers and the music is quiet on some and overblown on others. I can't do anything to correct my old videos, but all my newer content is edited with special headphones which seem to provide a better overall audio experience.

As a stylist with 45+ years of experience with period hair and three generations of stylists before me who lived in those periods to teach me, you have no concept of what you have nor how they were properly used.
With comments like yours I always have to wonder if it was intentionally meant to be hurtful or not. It certainly comes across that way, but I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume it was just badly phrased. Might I suggest if you don’t like my content (which is all backed by extensive research), perhaps you could make your own videos instead? That would certainly be more productive than just leaving some vague criticisms on a strangers content.

… I will never understand why someone would choose to be purposefully cruel to a complete stranger. True discourse is much more pleasant for all involved and leads to actual learning and growth for everyone. Choosing to be hurtful serves no real purpose other than trying to spread pain, and what the world needs right now is not more pain.
