  • So I am on a bit after a journey into the xpan pan shooting experience on the Nikon z system, I have always loved the look the Hasselblad xpan produces and wanted to try and recreate that crop ratio on my Nikon Z system so I came up with a way to help me see that awesome crop ratio!

The Hasselblad X2D 100c has the x-pan aspect ration as a crop option as well. By the way, I agree, it is a great aspect ratio. I find myself using it extensively in my work.

I love shooting 16:9 in black & white on my Zf. Not nearly the same as Xpan format but I love it. Also a big fan of the Widelux camera (Jeff Bridges does amazing work, and Peter McKinnon has recently started using it). Nice tips here!

@@csc-photo yes and it’s great being able to see that 16:9 aspect ratio while shooting! The widelux is on my radar also, Jeff Bridges is producing a new version of the widelux will be interesting to see that when it’s released.

So would you agree being able to see and compose the shot in that aspect ratio makes it a whole different experience rather than just taking a picture and cropping it in post?

Why not just do a vertical pano then crop for a real x pan look

What in god's name is X-Pan look??? If you mean the crop, then its a 2.7X crop (65mmX24mm) so just take your picture and apply a custom 2.7X crop in light room or PS or whatever photoediting software you use.

@@lensman5762 yes cropping to the 65x24 ratio is part of the process, but being able to see that crop ratio on or in the camera screen makes the whole shooting experience complete, if you have ever tried an Xpan what you see is what you shoot so trying to get that look on our digital cameras is key to replicating that and not just taking a picture and cropping after the fact. I think all camera brands can offer this in camera via a simple firmware update.

@@BarryMountford Yes, I agree it does help in the beginning, but one gets used to visualising it with practice. Its not that different from when we used to imagine a square crop with film or digital before Nikon started implementing proper cropped aspect ratios in their DSLRs. Have great new year.

Quite. Or better still, whack a couple of bits of tape on the viewfinder to mask as you see fit. Then guess what, you've got latitude to reframe in post.
