There is another great option that really mimics the old Subject Tracking. It is called Recall Shooting Functions and it lets you select 3d Tracking with Subject Detection turned off so you can select anything and it locks onto it regardless what it is. If you just select 3d Tracking the focus can jump to a face as it sees a Subject rather than an Object. Great for weddings for ring putting on shots among other things.

Agreed, it's key to also shut off Subject Tracking since it'll grab a face / eye when the 3D Tracking box is anywhere on the subject's body (of course the face must be in frame). I also discovered that 3D Tracking will stick to the face of the person you select, in group shots.

Thanks ! I was selecting it wrong. Now it works as planned…
One question though, on fn3 I can’t find the same modes as in fn1 and fn2.
Do they change or is this a layer8 problem ?

Thanks for the video, do you have to continually hold down the f2 button while tracking?

I set up my Fn1 for 3D Tracking. But it only stays on 3D tracking when i keep my finger on the fn1 button

I have the same problem. Fn 2 set to 3d tracking but it doesn't lock after pressing af-on any help is welcomed.

You have to keep the fn button pressed as well as the Af on button with this method. You'd be better off assigning the fn button to just switch between 3d tracking and wide area, that way you just press it once to get to it and then use af on. Once you are done with it, press fn button again to go back to wide area. Another way is to assign the autofocus point joystick button to active 3d tracking and AF on when pressed. That way you have it instantly at your thumb and it turns off as soon as you release it.

Is there a way to use this function in video mode?

yes, I use it a lot; it's called Subject Tracking AF, and is depicted by Target symbol

Thank you! I'm new to bird photography, and , if I understand correctly, function button & AF button need to be pressed to access 3d tracking. So, leaving my Z8 on a tripod, a few feet away from a bird perch, and remotely triggering it, there's no way to access 3d tracking, without the buttons being pushed, is there? Thanks again!

You can set your focus area to 3d tracking so it's always on

    If I go to Fn2 I can't choose 3d. It's not there...
