Is Nikon D40 + 35G still good at 2025? Please advise me. I'm thinking of buying it.
I like it!
Why not assign a button to 3D[AF-ON] rather than 3D? Pushing the button then activates both 3D tracking and initiates autofocus.
You can but then you loose the ability to place the focus box where you ned to in the frame before you initiate the focus.
@ Aim the centre point at the target, press and hold 3D[AF-ON] and recompose the frame as desired. Works well for me.
Nice tips 👍 I have Lens Fn1 allocated to single point AF for the same reason, think I might try 3D tracking and see how it goes. Those two front Fn buttons are my one gripe with the Z50ii, they're too wee and too fiddly compared to the ones on the D700. Specifically the lower of the two which doesn't have a good placement, so not ideal for any function needed in a hurry. I have Fn2 set to "Access top item in My Menu" with the top item being "Auto ISO sensitivity control" that way I can quickly turn Auto ISO on and off. Fn1 I have set to toggle Spot Metering on and off. Other customisations I have... Picture Control button set to Release Mode and Release mode button I have set to Metering. Really enjoying my Z50ii for nature walks, with the Tamron 50-400 its a nice lightweight combination. Nikon released it at exactly the right time for me, I was about to buy a ZF but this body suits me much better ergonomically and at a fraction of the cost.
@@grahamniven yeah the spacing for the function buttons in the new model do seem a little lower and tighter to access than the original. Great camera though just to pick up and go.
Which Nikon 300mm F4 did you use withe the Viltrox adapter?

Interesting! Can it be used with Davinci Resolve? I don’t see the link for this product…
Any programme which allows short cuts, I have updated the description with a link, thanks.
@@BarryMountford Thanks and no problem, you’re welcome…
I am sorry but no way I am paying more than 500 usd for a product of this quality non dji
Doesn't seem to be available in the UK?
Concerning battery life, i was worried after hearing shot counts of around 250, i did my first shoot this morning, taking 150 shots messing about with the screen, and not trying to expand the battery life, the only thing i did was to put it in airplane mode as i dont need wifi and bluetooth while shooting, and in my 2 hour session the battery indicator never moved, i lost one bar after coming home, reveiwing the images and transferring them to the pc, so i think its more than adequate
I agree, Nikon should implement the screen like the A7RV. I thought the z6iii was going to get it but no joy.
@@jaswantsidhu4556 🤞 it’s a screen they start using.
I’m about to get a Z6II in 2025. I just picked up a Zf and while I love it, I want a second body that’s similar in IQ, but will give me better ergonomics. The Z6 II is right in my price range and it’ll allow me to grab more glass.
Fully articulating way better I have the Z7ii and Z50ii and the Z50ii is far more versatile and protects the screen Allthough I use the viewfinder for all stills and having it off center is no issue for me
I prefer the flip screen but I don't understand why we should have to pick between the two types. The Sony A7RV has the perfect screen. It's a fully articulating and tilt screen in one! No need to pick. You got both options in one solution! Nikon needs to just copy that design.
@@christianholmstedt8770 wow I didn’t realise a screen like that was available! That is 100% the way all screens should be! Thanks for the heads up 👌
@BarryMountford No doubt. That is the only way to do it.
Really no excuse for it being an either or situation. Have a look at the Fuji X-T100 screen. For me the benefit of the fully articulating screen is the ability to close it with the screen facing in, protecting it. With the Z50ii I'm pretty much viewfinder only and only pop the screen open when using playback or to change menu settings.
Thanks ! I was selecting it wrong. Now it works as planned… One question though, on fn3 I can’t find the same modes as in fn1 and fn2. Do they change or is this a layer8 problem ?
Z50II cannot be compared with the iconic robust magnesium alloy body the D500... Even though the Z50II is having the advanced pedigree trickling down from the Z8/Z9 bodies... If Nikon is truly serious about the APSc sensor bodies then to replace the iconic D500 they should be coming out with 33/45MP APSc sensor bodies with dual card slots CFExpress SD ENEL 15c battery IBIS and 6K video capabilities with Expeed 7 processor...
New versions aren't always upgrade but they are always cash grabs. An upgrade from the Z50 is the Z6 line. The Z50 is a basic entry level camera that your skill level should outgrow any possible inline updates
I have a Nikon ZZ16+😅 BEST EVER for KI😅
the shutter speed limited to 1/4000 s. makes it not very compatible with bird photography there is no improvement over the D500
That’s true the max shutter speed for the d500 is 1/8000 compared to 1/4000 for the z50ii although I didn’t think that mattered a huge amount as I have never shot over 1/3200 sec for any birds in flight, what speeds do you shoot at?
I'm looking forward to the next video about the d40. It would be great if you could also comment on the 35mm dx lens. Maybe you can show photos taken with this lens. Thank you very much.
@@norbiger1510 that will definitely be coming at some point, thanks.
@BarryMountford I recently bought a D40x, which is a lot of fun. For snowscapes I use manual mode with spot light meter. This works very well. Together with the Nikon 35mm 1.8 dx lens I have a small and light camera. But I'm wondering if there is another 35mm lens with better bokeh and less aberration. I wish you a nice day.
But... what's your claim in this video? Compare the one to the other..? WHY..?
@@osowie9368 they both have the same sensor and they both have their flagship AF system.
An excellent review. However the reason what the D500 feels more robust isn't because it more well constructed, it is because it weighs more. Never did get the D500 because I went to the D750 but expect that like my D300 and D750 the body of the D500 weighs as much as a Z8. Yes, they did carry smaller and lighter DX format lenses but the camera bodies are in today's world overweight. BTW, I started with a F2 in 1973 and that camera body weighed in at 20 grams heavier than a Z8, so this trend wasn't just the DSLR's. Today we have Magnesium Chassis and carbon reinforced engineered plastics and the result is lighter camera bodies that are both rugged and weather sealed to a higher degree than cameras like the D500. Yeah, I said it flat out, the Z50 II will hold up better in a rain storm than a D500.
@@Scooter_123_abc that’s great info! And the D750 well that’s is a great camera one I miss!
This echoes my own thoughts. I would like both ideally. There have been no new DSLR lenses, and old lenses can no longer be repaired due to the lack of replacement components. Recording video with the D500 is a pain. The 4K image is beautiful but lacks internal image stabilisation. Constant chatter noise from the autofocus when videoing. On the other hand newer mirror-less lenses are again getting larger and heavier and negating something that was once a strong advantage. I would love to see the Z50ii get a better body.
Didint work my dear friend
Have you checked trigger and flash support HSS? if they do some flashes require you to set it to HSS same with some triggers.
Ich bin nach wie vor der Meinung, NIKON hat sich mit der D500 ein Denkmal gesetzt.
That’s true it’s up there as one of the best apsc dslrs.
You seem to rate optical viewfinders highly, but if you shoot wildlife (etc) in low light, the EVFs win hands down (brighten the exposure to grab focus and compose, or just brighten the EVF display and keep the exposure normal...)
@@dominiclester3232 that’s actually a very good point, and I agree much more useful at night.
I dont see this mentioned a lot, but for me, I could never go back to the shutter sound of the D500. Like a jackhammer!!! I loved that camera - back in the day - but I've never looked back.
@@ChrisMosner I suppose you prefer the sound of a Tesla to a V8 muscle car too? 😬
@JPStaats lol... when I was younger I'd have been waking the neighbors with that muscle car and loving it! Now that I'm older ... sigh... I've become the sleeping neighbors! 😭
Harsh! I find it OK, especially compared to the D4s (which I love) but it I much louder than the D500. My D300s sounds nicest to my ears...(it is a little quieter)
Personally i think the z50ii is more comparable to the d7000 series. the exspeed 7 processor is far superior than what was in the dslrs anf the features are packed in the z50ii. if you are needing video or just gerting started if you are just shooting photos or already have it then the d500 is yoir go. i would be going from a d500 - z50ii. I am keeping my d500 for no other reason that its the same battery and memory cards as my z6ii amd z8, most boring reason ever lol
@@timhunter157 I loved my D7200 and it served me well, but AF for moving subjects was frustrating. If the Z50ii is comparable to that camera but with a Z8 AF system, it’s a win for sure!
There are so many different opinions about the Z50 II. Christopher Frost did not like it at all. It takes something to compete with the D500. I have a Z8, and still I often take the D500 instead.
Interesting. In what use case do you prefer the D500?
Christopher Frost doesn't like the sensor so, apparently, he wouldn't like the D500 either. He really dislikes that the Z50ii lacks ibis so, apparently, he wouldn't like the D500, either. He also says, "You are getting quite a lot of camera for your money here ... EVF is amazingly bright and clear ... feels like one of Nikon's professional cameras ... the build quality is great for the money you are paying ... some of its features are frankly top of the line..." You mischaracterized the review in suggesting he didn't like it at all.
CF is a Canon fanboy. He does have praise for the crippled R100.
Why They are 2 completely different cameras and the 500 is no longer made The Z50 is not a pro level camera and the price is in a different bracket
And yet there’s a debate about it, which leads me to believe that the Z50II punches way above its “bracket”?
That’s a good point but having owned both cameras I suppose it comes down to what you class as pro level? Is it the performance of the camera? Is it the ruggedness of the camera? The Z50ii outperforms the D500 in most areas as I mentioned in the video if we had the body of the d500 on the Z50ii that would make it all round complete. Both cameras are using the same sensor so it makes sense to compare them. Both are excellent cameras and both will produce stunning results.
I can confirm it is definitely punching above its weight in terms of performance.
how do i move the auto focus square, it is only in the centre , what if i want it moving to the left for example. many thanks
Nikon Z50II, a piece of junk plastic, except the Expeed 7 processor, the Z5 is much better, full frame and metal.
I’ve not tried the Z5 I can only compare it to the other z cameras I have owned, I would love the cameras to be metal made, sign of the times I think.
Stupid comment.
@ how do you mean?
@BarryMountford Garbage camera Nikon ever made. Try the Z5 that is much better and metal and full frame, except it is too slow due to its processor.
@@JPStaats how come?
I wonder if this is the same process to fix the audio issue I'm experiencing with my Z50 camera. Just the left channel is working. the problem goes away on any external mic - its just an internal mic issue.
I wouldn’t know that unfortunately, the screen was relatively easy as it clipped in and out.
The flip-out screen is great for low angle portrait shots. I had it on my D5300 and I missed that feature on the Z50 - glad the Z50ii has it now.
Yes very useful in portrait mode, not so useful in landscape though but I guess it’s just a case of getting used to it.
Wrong! You don't have to look sideways at the screen. Try this...Open fully, turn through 180 degrees, close. Now the screen is in exactly the same place as the original Z50's screen. Thanks for an honest video. I'll watch out for more.
Thanks if only it would tilt out that would be very handy.
AF for 85 G on a Z6 body is a shit. Very slow and hunt a tiny bit every time. Very hard for eyes AF gets the right focus.
That’s a shame I had no issues with mine and other f mount lenses, the s line lenses are outstanding though 👌
S line is another story, it my be the z6 body which can’t deliver fast processing over Eye AF. For regular subjects it woks quite well, but z lenses are definitely faster.
I switched from my Nikon Z50 to Z50II and it was worth it.
100% agree it’s a great camera!
Barry, Appreciate hearing your thoughts on the version 2. I’ve had the z50 for 4 years. Wasn’t going to upgrade. But i do appreciate the improvements, especially now having actual buttons on back, and i do like the flip out screen for when shooting vertical stills. I’ll give it a try when i can get hands on with it .
@@craigcarlson4022 well you wouldn’t be disappointed as the z50 is a great camera anyway!
Majority of my photography is wildlife, mainly birds, so have ordered Z50ii & z180-600 👍
@@tommoodie-cy7dr great set up! I’ve been looking at the 180-600 looks a great buy.
180-600 is absolutely brilliant. At £1600 it’s a no brainer. It’s a noticeable step up from the old 200-500 in every department. It pretty much lives on my Z8. My wife rocks the z50ii with the 28-400 and gets some great bird shots in a super lightweight package. Z50ii is definitely now the best value entry Nikon. We also have the z6ii which I love as a lighter walk around camera and the z30 which fits in my jeans pocket and means I’m never without a Nikon.
@@SingleTrack66 I'm using a D7500 & Sigma 150-600 at present which I have no problems with but think it's time to move with the times and go mirrorless especially for the improved autofocus with bird detect. Will probably get the 28-400 eventually for when going on longer walks etc, I use the Tamron 18-400 on my D7500.
Looks good 👍🏾 i was thinking about doing the same thing but with the OM1 Mk2 or EM 1X
Always a tough choice, great cameras!
For what its worth, I love the flip out screen on my Zf. I use it all the time exactly as you demonstrated with the Z50ii - easy to get accustomed to.
@@ChrisMosner thanks I am looking forward to giving it a good go!
If I understood correctly, one needs to know what one is going to be photographing before picking a photographic tool set. I agree. I am not going to shoot so many things... like action... so I do not need much of the spandangle of most of many cameras. My choice was not a broad casted camera. I got what served my purposes. I am happy for those that need all the bells and whistles and are getting them today. Good for all of them folk.
100% agree 👍
I love shooting 16:9 in black & white on my Zf. Not nearly the same as Xpan format but I love it. Also a big fan of the Widelux camera (Jeff Bridges does amazing work, and Peter McKinnon has recently started using it). Nice tips here!
@@csc-photo yes and it’s great being able to see that 16:9 aspect ratio while shooting! The widelux is on my radar also, Jeff Bridges is producing a new version of the widelux will be interesting to see that when it’s released.
@ Wondering if it’ll be digital(?), sounds really cool!
The Hasselblad X2D 100c has the x-pan aspect ration as a crop option as well. By the way, I agree, it is a great aspect ratio. I find myself using it extensively in my work.
Something special about it for sure.
What in god's name is X-Pan look??? If you mean the crop, then its a 2.7X crop (65mmX24mm) so just take your picture and apply a custom 2.7X crop in light room or PS or whatever photoediting software you use.
@@lensman5762 yes cropping to the 65x24 ratio is part of the process, but being able to see that crop ratio on or in the camera screen makes the whole shooting experience complete, if you have ever tried an Xpan what you see is what you shoot so trying to get that look on our digital cameras is key to replicating that and not just taking a picture and cropping after the fact. I think all camera brands can offer this in camera via a simple firmware update.
@@BarryMountford Yes, I agree it does help in the beginning, but one gets used to visualising it with practice. Its not that different from when we used to imagine a square crop with film or digital before Nikon started implementing proper cropped aspect ratios in their DSLRs. Have great new year.
Quite. Or better still, whack a couple of bits of tape on the viewfinder to mask as you see fit. Then guess what, you've got latitude to reframe in post.
It's why I bought a GFX
So would you agree being able to see and compose the shot in that aspect ratio makes it a whole different experience rather than just taking a picture and cropping it in post?
magnificent digital camera. i broke the lens which no longer pulls out, i bought a new one and hope i will be able to mount it and make it work like it used to.thanks for this video
Good luck 🙏🏻
Just got z6nii myself last month and find it great. Yes got it used buti don't know why people think it's bad. Not everyone can afford a 4000 plus camera
The z6ii is a great camera! Loved using mine.
@BarryMountford I'm not a pro but I'm doing shutter drag . Just got a used f2.8 nikkor today fir astrophotography and few months 28mm to 400 mm nikon fx lens it's great
Why not just do a vertical pano then crop for a real x pan look
Lumix full frame cameras do an X Pan crop
Ah I wasn’t aware of that any specific models?
@@BarryMountford Lumix S1R has this option
Will the z series lens fit the z dx mount? Will it not lose image quality?
You can use all z mount lenses on all z system cameras, I’ve not noticed any lack in quality.
