I bought this D40 into the end of Nov. 2006 - and still loving it, the colors are fine, and i love the look. It was, and still is, a pure digital fun camera, hence DSLR! Be sure to update the D40 firmware to the latest - A: 1.12, B: 1.11. If you're on A/B 1.10, for instance - you must update 3-times the firmware, first to A/B: 1.11, then the update to A: 1.12 again...go figure!
I don't need to lug my D700 all the time, and being honest - into sunlight, with a good lens, like the 35/1.8, or even with the small 18-55 VR II kitlens (which is sharper, smaller, and focusing much faster than the original, bigger, VR-less 18-55 ED II) the D40 makes still a lot of fun - and especially - sense to me! Happy shooting! I even bought a 2nd copy by accident this year, it does have 3-times as much shutter count, as my original one, but now i can use the cheap copy and save my original D40 as backup camera.
(edit) Even with the latest FW, the D40 is over-exposing, so set the EV comp to -0.3 always, then it's for 95% into all cases, spot-on!
Pro tip #2 - use the DK-20 (or cheap substitute) eyecup, instead of the original D40 eyecup! The reason is - the DK-20 does look better,
shields stray light from the sides better! The DK-20 eyecup is also used on the D60.
You do need bigger pictures - 3000x2000 pixels is not enough from the D40? Use Topaz GigaPixel, or similar tool, to blow the pictures up! Problem solved. RAW Files are only into the ~6 MB space, so really small & handy. SDHC memory cards are being supported up to 32GB! And trust me - you'll not need a 32GB card, even 8GB or 16GB is plenty, whileas the RAW files are so small, for todays standard.
That’s great info on the firmware update thanks for sharing 🙏🏻 and yes it’s such a fun camera to use!
I'm looking forward to the next video about the d40. It would be great if you could also comment on the 35mm dx lens. Maybe you can show photos taken with this lens. Thank you very much.
@@norbiger1510 that will definitely be coming at some point, thanks.
@BarryMountford I recently bought a D40x, which is a lot of fun. For snowscapes I use manual mode with spot light meter. This works very well.
Together with the Nikon 35mm 1.8 dx lens I have a small and light camera. But I'm wondering if there is another 35mm lens with better bokeh and less aberration.
I wish you a nice day.
I just finished watching this video and I would like to see how this performs at night especially with long exposures. I would like to buy a D40 but the D80 can use older AF-D lenses which are cheap nowadays.
Just like any other camera.
The D40 advantage is color accuracy. It's one of the highest color accurate digital cameras ever made even today. It'll have more noise at higher iso but you have far superior software today to correct it.
IQ of the D40 is as good or better than most bodies you'll use. You're only losing resolution not IQ.
Enlargement is far easier and extremely good today.
As far as high ISO. You need to run Adobe RGB or shoot RAW.
Now you've convinced me to buy a D40. 👍
@e.t.cetera7035 it's a Nikon. The NEF files are not completely Raw files even back then. Essentially you can shoot Large Basic and get the same output as Norm, Fine, or RAW. All online images are at most 2.5mp, but usually around 700kb-1mp so 6mp is PLENTY! Even for print, it's plenty.
1/500s flash sync speed is still the highest you'll find for a mechanical shutter unless you go to leaf shutter from Hasselblad, PhaseOne or Leica.
If I find the old color accuracy numbers I'll post them. The D40 color accuracy is higher than my D200 although the D200 is a superior body.
It's a small body too. If you like manual focus lenses. Grab the 40mm f2 Voitlander Ultron which is a pancake lens that's better optically than the Nikon 50mm f1.8 E, D, and G.
There's a Canon model that was 4mp that really good too. These bodies have giant pixels.
barry i still have mine stuck in drawer which wife bought brand new, i still remember buying your old d7000 and the super 10-20 mm lens. i did switch to sony mirrorless after selling my nikon gear but i have just jumped backwards and picked up nearly new boxed D7100 paul
Hey Paul, yeah that is a great lens!
Is Nikon D40 + 35G still good at 2025? Please advise me. I'm thinking of buying it.
I like it!
Just re-bought a D200. Also bought a D50 for four dollars US!
@@lesberkley3821 yeah looking at picking up the d200 also, great bargain on the D50👌
