Canon’s RF Lenses are massive, expensive and only those lenses are weather sealed. I switched to Nikon because I care more about size and weight of the camera body and lens combo as I travel quite a bit. I don’t need the fastest apertures on the market and I’m ok with 2.0 and 1.8 primes. Nikon offers some minor weather resistance on basis non-S lenses so that helped my jump as well. I will say I see a lot of great offers on Canon gear all the time going on sale and Sony seems competitive as well with a huge lens selection and third party options. But the design of the Zf, the feel of them body plus the points mentioned above helped me decide to jump for my style of photography at this point in my life.

Great video.. After almost 10 yrs shooting with Sony (7R2 ,7III and A1) I decided to switch to Nikon because my second shooter had a z6II and his files looked totally different than the ones from my Sony camera. After some years decided to get the Z8 and recently the Z6III and I pair those with the 50mm 1.2, 14-24mm 2.8, the 135 1.8 Plena and the Tamron 35mm-150mm. @ And why must it make sense to you? I buy every camera based on what I do in my business. The Z 8 is my hybrid video and photography camera, Z 6III is exclusively for video and the Z 50II will be my C Cam and BTS/Studio camera.
The Z8 is one of my favorite hybrid cameras. I also agree that the 24-120 is a major lens. I use it for studio photography and sports highlights. I do own a lot of other brands but my Nikons hold a special place for me.
Switched over completely to Nikon two months ago (after over a decade with Sony). Now I own a Zf, Z6iii, and Z8 and I can't be happier! What a comeback Nikon has made.
Thanks for this video! 💪The colors straight from the camera are impressive! Never tried a Nikon for the same reason you mentioned, that all are saying is "not for video..", but I fully agree with you, practicability and how quick and easy you achieve the end result is the most important! Let’s goooo. Honestly, it blew my mind using it in the Dominican this year. The colors are so good. It makes sense for most but we just gotta show and explain. Hoping to just bring attention is all :)
I'm so glad to see this. Used Nikon since '08 (vindicated now lol) and got fed up waiting for them to catch up on video so I added BMD P4K at launch. LOVED that camera but like you hated flying on a gimbal. Was fine when it could be rigged but sometimes you just need to keep it light and nimble. Z8 solves all of that while keeping the absolutely beautiful colours and tones and honestly I've been totally happy with the H.265 10 bit codec. Super flexible and tiny files. And it's a class leading stills body on top of all this. Another surprise favourite feature is the DX mode in video. I have it on a function button so I can switch from FF to S35 & it's still oversampled 4K. Sure you can shoot in 8K and crop but it helps for framing and keeps file sizes smaller.
Just picked up a z6iii and it’s the first mirrorless that mostly makes me forget that I’m not shooting on a cinema camera. It doesn’t have that crazy sharp look. That and Red’s luts make the z6iii’s footage look SO good. Team Nikon!
As a photographer I swapped from Canon to Nikon in 2017. It was going from a flip phone to a smart phone. (5D Mark III to Nikon D810). I switched from D810 to D850 to Z7ii and Z8. I LOVE my Z8. Its amazing, Eye AF is outstanding, I can hand hold a 70-200 2.8 lens at 1/160 a second and get sharp photos. The Battery was outstanding for both video and stills. I generally get 2500 photos over the 4-5 hrs (shooting 10fps). I like the larger size of body vs then Z7ii. My wife prefers the Z7ii so we kept both of them and I bought a second Z8 for my backup.
Everything you said about Nikon (as of now) is spot on! I started out primarily as a photographer back in 2012. My 1st camera was a Nikon D3400. through out the years I just stuck with them as I always loved their color science for the photos plus they menu system was really straight forward. It was so terrible for video around that time and even introducing the D850 their video specs were just so bad. As I slowly transitioned into video I seriously was about to give up on them. But then the Z6 and Z7 came out with somewhat decent specs so I stuck It out. Now with the Z9 & Z8 it just completely blew the doors open for the video world of Nikon. Cant wait to see what they do with RED in the future!
Nice video Justin. I've been shooting with the Z6II for the last 3 years and have been impressed with the video quality and colors. I just shot my first wedding with the Z6III 2 weeks ago and I am blown away on the improvement of Autofocus alone. On top of that, the 6K60fps Raw is insane. The ONLY shade I have to throw at Nikon is that they don't allow for USB recording or dual card writing. That is really a shame. But, I use Ninja V+ Ultra's on my setups so I have backup.
Thanks for mentioning that the autofocus follow can be dialed in, in video. So many reviewers have never talked about this feature in the Nikon Autofocus, they just comment about if it is snappy or not. After I found out about the being able to dial in the autofocus in video, I don’t think most reviewers know about this. Oh I had to follow you after this.
Justin, thanks for this video man, I'm a Nikon shooter that's making the transition to mirrorless, and this helps me tremendously, especially knowing what you've shot with in the past. Nikon deserves this kind of recognition, the most slept on hybrid cameras on the market! And I can't wait to see what will come from the RED acquisition!
Love my Z6III got it the week it came out and the 24-120 f4 is my favourite lens, it is hardly off of my camera...totally agree about straight out of the camera, stuff just looks so good! 📷😎
This video got me thinking I need to rent a Z9. Internal Raw is a game-changer! Not to mention the red acquisition. None of this is new news but coming from you says a lot
Really appreciate you man! Definitely rent one and take it for a shoot with a model. You’ll instantly see what I saw back in April haha. Man I sold my Panasonics so fast 😂
I’m concerned about IBIS. I’ve been tempted by the z8 (since Panasonic is taking so long to come out with a s1r successor) but worried the IBIS might be a step down. Is it? I don’t use gimbals. As for open gate I don’t actually don’t use it
I have been using a Z6 and two Z6II's for my video work for the last few years. I just traded in my Z6 for a Z6III on the weekend while it was on sale, and am waiting for it to arrive. I can't wait to get shooting with it!
As a Nikon shooter for more than a decade, these tools we have now are just incredible. The Z8 and Z9 are just perfection and the Z6 III has been fun for some testing over the last few months! Amazing tools to have as creative professionals, especially for us working solo or in small teams!
Dude, I freaking love this video. I'm just starting my switch from Sony to Nikon. Just shipped my A1 and FX3 and lenses to the folks I sold to on eBay and I'll be going with a pair of Z9s most likely. I'm curious though - why the Z8 and not the Z9 for you? Do you ever find that it overheats when recording 8k N-RAW? I've heard that it's basically impossible to make the Z9 overheat, but the Z8 can get there relatively easily in comparison.
True for most people, unfortunately my needs is on the wider end, hence the 24-120/4 is more sense to me rather than the Tamron. Great lens, a versatile workhorse, and a bit heavy for whole day.
I've been shooting video for 30 years. Started with Panasonic and Sony SVHS and BetaCam back in the day. I've been shooting Nikon for stills and now looking to get back into the wedding business with the Nikon Z6iii for both stills and video. But primarily video. I have a gimbal and with your lens recommendation, believe it will be a GREAT combination. I have the same lens on my older D750 and I LOVE IT. Great all around lens. Looking forward to seeing this camera in all its GLORY for 2025 wedding season. Thank you for this video. I'm convinced. PEACE!!!!
I shot this season on a Z8, and it is a great camera! Planning to upgrade my backup Z6ii to an Z6iii and to use it a B-Cam rather then a backup that sits in the backpack. I am very interested in more videos like this. Can you please make a video on how you shoot and edit some footage on a Z8, from a technical perspective? What settings do you use when shooting, what ND filters and how you color grade de N-log. I am struggling at this point to get my n-log color grade to a satisfying point. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Thanks for making this video! 📸 been using Nikon since before you came to Hawaii for that adventure shoot! 🤙🏽🤙🏽 Love my z8 z6iii combo … Keep up the awesome content!! Aloha
This is an interesting video to watch… I’ve never thought about Nikon for my video camera and this is coming from an FX6 user right now. Great video Justin! Can’t wait for more.
Awesome video I own 5 different camera systems, and I lean to my Nikons over my Canon (10 camera), Sony (5 cameras) and Lumix (2 cameras). And I have the best
Z6 mk1 had the best 4K video quality when it was launched. Sad that they couldn't figure out the Af at launch but on God the Nikon Red Luts are pure magic.
Confirming, nothing looks better than NIKON N-RAW. Best natural color you can get. Beats even the big cinema cameras. Hope N-RAW goes into the Red cameras.
Great Video,. . . I like the ecosystem concept. I'm looking for that streamlined camera(s) that'll let me Do wedding photography AND quickly switch to video. Ill definitely rent that set and give it a try.
I reckon the RAW video ability in the Nikons will turn them into the most sought after hybrid cameras for video. Plus the value of the z6iii is just off the charts now with the discounts being offered.
Great video. I purchased the z8 about 6 months ago and it’s amazing for photo and video but the main issue I have is that it does give you a hot card warning and it does overheat with long takes even with fast cfexpress cards and no dual video recording. How do you feel about the no dual video recording?
Thank you for all the effort, Honestly costumer they don’t even know the difference, specially for Wedding , I have both Nikon and Sony , and for wedding I only use Sony cameras, Focus wise, especially for videos most of the camera are the same. The Sony is like 20% better for photography. But you didn’t mention that in Nikon video Raw you can’t change the white balance on video on paper you can but when you change it the white balance it’s not changing as the black magic even using black magic from external monitor, it’s still better than Nikon video . But to be fair, a lot of cinematographers and Videographer. They care about all of this features, customer they don’t even care. They only care about how you can serve them. Have you ever had a client to ask you? What camera do you use like a specific models as the children right now they don’t ask about.
Love the rant! They definitely stepped up their game! I shoot weddings as well with RED and really want a solid gimbal cam with auto focus. Do you find they match well?
Hello! How much memory do you need for a nikon z6iii camera to record a full wedding day? And what video settings do you use to record a full wedding to fit it on memory cards? Thanks for the answer...
Someone explain how anamorphic lenses work on 16:9 full frame with no open gate! I have a z8 and a z63 and I want to shoot anamorphic but it seems like you have to crop SO much out ! But your footage looked amazing! Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!
24-120 F4, is the GOAT lens for Nikon I’m scared when it’s not available it will be on the 4K selling list real soon. I can see Nikon power zoom that lens soon. I’ve already allocated funds for the Z 28-135mm F4 PZ that lens would be the killer lens of all lens. FX prob 35-150 making it the perfect vacation lens. We would see soon. Nice channel Cuz.
Agree 100% .. Coming from MFT Lumix world and I blown away with what Nikon has to offer me with Z8. How do u balance the gimbal with 24-120 F4 ? Its an external zoom and ai find it but annoying with such kind of lens.
I Looooove my Z8 and I just got the Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8 for it. It's a native z mount and it is absolutely amazing!! 35mm is pretty wide and I still have a 14-24 F2.8 Sigma (f mount) as my super wide, so I'm covered with two great lenses that are F2.8! Please, everyone who loves zoom and range, check out this tamron 35-150! It is honestly so sharp as well! I love it!
@@roosxmarijn I messed with that at NAB this year. I almost got it but since I wasn’t using my Nikon as an A cam I settled for the 24-120 to be wider. I love it though
I have really enjoyed my z8 for video but sometimes I feel like the color that I get from it is hard to color grade. Is it because I always shoot with the “Cloudy” white balance? Is there a standard I should be using?
I just found out about this camera, I think I’m gonna sell my d850 and make the upgrade! I’m a photographer but really want a camera with great video capabilities!
Switched from Sony A1 to Z8. I’m a hybrid shooter and love the Nikon and don’t feel like I am missing anything except for video storage redundancy. Other than that, it goes toe to toe with the A1 from my experience.
What are your thoughts on only being able to record video to one card slot? I love Nikon and have used them for years for photo. I just don't understand why they can't create these cameras to record video to dual slots when they can do it for photo.
Justin, I gotta tell you. You sold me on the Nikon. Now the question for me is just now... To decide on the z8 versus the z6iii. Is the 8k alone enough to justify the z8 over the z6iii? Or does the z6iii low light performance enough to justify it over the z8 for weddings?
@@lilsimsun the R5 is a solid option. I’m personally not sold on canons low light abilities. Other than that I don’t have much negative to say about it.
The Z6iii shoots raw 6k up to 60fps. It’s up to you honestly. To me, an A Cam is the Z8 and a great B cam is the Z6iii. I also think the Z8 is cleaner in shadows in my own opinion.
I'm trying to be really patient and wait for an FX3 Mk II or FX4...but Nikon looks real good right now, gotta say. It's just not financially feasible right now to switch ecosystems.
@@MikePlayDrums well let me just say you can use the megadap adapter and adapt all your e mount glass to Nikon and maintain ALL autofocus abilities. Switching systems is just a different body for you now.
i ve read people saying that resolve or premiere cant fully edit Nikon raw... is that true? what options you got ? is it like Braw? haven't found any video about it and it seems really strange that noone talks about it
Resolve can, only up to 4k on the free version I believe. I use it with Final Cut Pro but had to buy color finale transcoder in order to use RAW in FCPX.
the 24-70 is parfocal between 24-50. The 70-200 is near parfocal as well. Both lenses are incredibly well corrected for focus breathing. Nikon has sneakily been building lenses that kill for photos but dont advertise they are MOSTLY perfect for video as well. Now we have a killer camera with amazing video tech and we now realize the Z lenses are better than anything Sony or Canon is putting out.
I've shot with Nikon since 2013. I started out with a D3300, D7100, D600, and D750. Now I own a Z6 and Z6II, Z6III, and Z8. . I'll be selling my Z6 here soon though. I only need three cameras, and the Z6 is just collecting dust and is behind in autofocus. I have to say, I love my potatoes!!! What I like even more is mashed potatoes, and that's what the Z6III and Z8 are for me.

But then the Z6 and Z7 came out with somewhat decent specs so I stuck It out. Now with the Z9 & Z8 it just completely blew the doors open for the video world of Nikon. Cant wait to see what they do with RED in the future!
I’ve been looking for a switch from my GH5 and this is it. Finally 🙏🏾 thank you brotha
Team Nikon over here, There were some mis-steps in the beginning but now they are on par in the mirrorless world.
Love my Z6III got it the week it came out and the 24-120 f4 is my favourite lens, it is hardly off of my camera...totally agree about straight out of the camera, stuff just looks so good! 📷😎
I got the Z8 last October and every time I use it I love it again, the updates are killer, and the RED LUTS are insane
Haha! Anytime bro, stay tuned I def. gotta try this system! 💯
You may not think it’s not for video but with the acquisition of Red, you know it’s a sleeper! I’m all in on Nikon for video.
I love this video. Well said already at the beginning. Subscribed! Thanks for posting this.
This makes my heart happy 🥰
Need open gate. Record to external SSD. Gimbal-like digital IS = Lumix S5iiX.
If you like the 24-120 you’d love the 35-150 from Tamron. For me, it replaced a 35 f1.8, 24-70 and 70-200.
True for most people, unfortunately my needs is on the wider end, hence the 24-120/4 is more sense to me rather than the Tamron. Great lens, a versatile workhorse, and a bit heavy for whole day.
I love the Nikon system. I think they have the best color science and features. This coming from #LumixGang
I COMPLETELY AGREE!!! I LOVE THE FACT I CAN ADAPT SONY LENSES TO MY NIKON Z8 & Z6III AS WELL! BEST CAMERAS I EVER OWNED
@@TrenchfootSalvador wait until my next video haha. About to hurt peoples feelings haha
@@JustinPorterMedia I can't wait!
Aloha
@@wAAltz93 yoooo your photos are Nikon??? No way!! Dude I’m even more happy now haha. So crazy
This is an interesting video to watch… I’ve never thought about Nikon for my video camera and this is coming from an FX6 user right now. Great video Justin! Can’t wait for more.
Thanks so much. Appreciate you being open minded. It’s something to see for yourself for real.
Awesome video I own 5 different camera systems, and I lean to my Nikons over my Canon (10 camera), Sony (5 cameras) and Lumix (2 cameras). And I have the best
That Noct lens is spectacular!
@@RobbieBoy80 whew 🥵 it’s so good. Crazy
Z6 mk1 had the best 4K video quality when it was launched. Sad that they couldn't figure out the Af at launch but on God the Nikon Red Luts are pure magic.
Absolut true, what you can get out of the 8bit flat profile was amazing and such an easy workflow 🔥🔥
Still and always be SONY for me. Appreciate the video brotherman.
@@grandsome hey no problem with that. The FX3 is mad tempting sometimes lol
i Love my z6iii
Amazing, I wish you make videos for the best settings for video filming
@@ramonsahi5802 not a bad idea. I may do this honestly.
JP man, I love my Z8 en Z6iii and pleaseeee make more RUclips video’s like this! 🔥
Bet. I got so comfortable talking to the camera this time hah
Been using Nikon for stills for years, glad they're finally stepping up the video game
Please do a more in depth i look forward to that. And thanks for sharing this with us. I needed that.
switched from Sony over to Nikon z8's, and I absolutely love it.
I love nikon. Has the z8 overheating issue while doing video been resolved ?
Duuude those images!!!🤯🤯🤯
Thank you for all the effort,
Honestly costumer they don’t even know the difference, specially for Wedding , I have both Nikon and Sony , and for wedding I only use Sony cameras,
Focus wise, especially for videos most of the camera are the same.
What about flickering in Nikon z6 iii?
@@danielgray1874 yea you lose areas on the sides. Thats really all to me. Honestly I don’t mind it at all. You just learn to frame accordingly
Nice channel Cuz.
its about optimizing for yourself, for your craft.
I can't wait to get my hands on a Z8.....
I own a z6 II
Nice! How do you get around the overheating issue?
Let’s goooooo🔥
I plan to switch from Sony to Nikon for video. Z8 is my target camera.
I got home safely, thanks for asking. And I love that you believe in the Most High God🎉
Agree 100% .. Coming from MFT Lumix world and I blown away with what Nikon has to offer me with Z8.
How do u balance the gimbal with 24-120 F4 ? Its an external zoom and ai find it but annoying with such kind of lens.
can you show how you color the footage. especially in low light, this looks great
A lot of people forget that Nikon was the first company to put video options in a Dslr with the D90 if I remember correctly.
Thank yyyyooooouuuuuuuuu..... bro, I have been saying this all my life.
Let’s goooooo #TeamNikon
Super Great Insight❤❤❤
Nikon z8 is where its at... also coming from a wedding filmmaker.
How do you match the Z8/Z6 with the Komodo footage?
I love it though
grateful for this video bro. subbed✌
Truly appreciate you. Thank you for the support
Ive got a z6iii and i would love to use Nraw but Adobe doesnt support it. What do yall use for editing Nraw?
What are your thoughts on only being able to record video to one card slot? I love Nikon and have used them for years for photo. I just don't understand why they can't create these cameras to record video to dual slots when they can do it for photo.
Great Job 👍...nikon meeting your Productions needs..at end of the day the client has last word...Yes or No 😂....Camera is are tools 😅
Thank You Justin!!!
Nikon Z9, Z6iii and Blackmagic 6K Pro owner.. I got stills and videos on lock!!
Can you share your color grading sauce for NRaw /Nlog?
I am debating now lol. What are your thoughts on Canon R5 Mark 2?
@@lilsimsun the R5 is a solid option. I’m personally not sold on canons low light abilities. Other than that I don’t have much negative to say about it.
Why do you edit in rec709 over rec2020 with NLog footage?
Running a Z8 and Z6iii... team Nikon
So , would you recommend getting z8 instead of z6iii ? Because of the internal NRaw and 8k ? Or z6iii will be enough …coming from sony a7siii ..thanks
The Z6iii shoots raw 6k up to 60fps. It’s up to you honestly. To me, an A Cam is the Z8 and a great B cam is the Z6iii. I also think the Z8 is cleaner in shadows in my own opinion.
Thank you !
Been trying to tell people my Nikon Z8 is incredible, especially for video.
@@JustinPorterMedia that’s pretty dope. I honestly didn’t know that! You got me thinking now 😂
My main is a z6 and for products I have a z7ii
Hi, justin. How do u deal with video record on 1 card?
I use larger c fast cards. Nikon records proxies simultaneously to the same card though too.
Absolutely right
Z8 is Epic
Internal Raw 12 bit is dope
i ve read people saying that resolve or premiere cant fully edit Nikon raw... is that true? what options you got ? is it like Braw? haven't found any video about it and it seems really strange that noone talks about it
Resolve can, only up to 4k on the free version I believe.
