I show how to redo chairs with fabric and I show how to paint fabric using Martha Stewart chalk paint. Painting fabric with chalk paint and painting upholstery with upholstery fabric paint is one of many chair makeover ideas. This is a side chair redo, chair update and how to redo chairs with fabric. This is how to paint fabric chairs.

Great job! I love the fact that you used only crafting products like spray glues and hot glue etc to complete the project a no-sew technique great for a non seamstress love this
Thank you!! And yes! I am definitely NOT a professional. I was worried for a minute trying to figure out what to do with those cushions and then I thought about the spray adhesive and I was so happy!!! LOL. It works great and holds up very well.
I really love the attention to details, how u ensured the stripes lined up. I actually started to like the old upholstery once u painted the chairs gold, but b&w is timeless.
Thank you. They really work much better with the decor of the room now. Thanks for watching!
You did an amazing job. Thank you for showing how you adhered fabric to the cushion. A lot of videos do not show that part.
Thank you! I’m glad you liked this! 😊
One of the best DIY’s I’ve ever seen! Amazing and inspiring!!!
Awww!!! Thank you so much! 😘😊
I’m LUV’N The COLORS !!!! The stripes are a Lovely BOLD STATEMENT PIECE for these chairs... I justtttt LUV OLDER MODEL FURNITURE (Antique Looking) !!!! I never knew chalk paint would take to the chairs like that , just fabulous !!!! And the gold also looks Devine ... These chairs are SOOOOOO shabby chic !!!! Nowwwwww all you need is some faux fur pillows lol ... Again you did A PHENOMENAL JOB !!!! TYSVM !!!! Take Care Dear Heart ... HUGGIESSSSSS !!!! 💖👑💖
Awww!! Thank you so much. I really wanted faux fur pillow but after I was done, I needed a break from thinking about these chairs! LOL. I just used what I had. I might have to still add the faux fur, I think that would look cute. Thanks so much for watching!! 💕💕
The most easiest transformation I've seen so far. And it looks great. Thank you for sharing!

WOW!!! They turned out amazing!! I was just looking up videos on how to reupholster chairs (time to get rid of my pink one) and was so happy to come across your well informed video! Beautiful, you made it look easy.
Thank you so much. 😊
I, too, have been inspired by this. I love the black and white stripe but I am going with a leopard print as my sofa is brown and don’t wish to do that.
It’s very elegant and timeless and you will be most pleased for a long time with the new chairs. Brava
Oooh leopard print would be gorgeous on furniture! Thank you for your comment and thanks so much for stopping by! 😊

Amazing job!
Thank you!!
Very nice you did an amazing job! 👌
Thank you so much!!
Does rhw chalk paint change the texture of the fabric ? I have similar chairs and they feel almost faux velvety, but I don’t want to ruin the texture
The paint did change the texture to be a little rough but I heard if you use a smoothing sandpaper between coats it softens it. I didn't sand these chairs since the paint was on the back. I did use chalk paint on a couch and the texture stayed the same but it started out sort of tough. We just started sitting on it and it softened naturally.
Love it ❤️
Thank you! 😊
Amazing!
Thanks you so much Jill!
Beautiful 😍😍😍

beautiful work
Thank you so much!! 💕
Excellent
Thank you!
They turned out great. Since it's been a year, have any of the staples come undone? And the fabric that you painted with chalk paint, does it feel hard or stiff to the touch?.
Hi. No staples have come undone and it has held up really well. I plan to do an update video really soon to show how some of my DIYs look today. This will be included. The fabric is slightly rough. I didn't take care to do any steps that would have made it softer since it was on the back. A couch I painted is soft though. There's a video for that if you're interested in checking it out.
Great video, what is the cord/lining there you used to contour the chairs called? Just got into furniture upcycle hobby.
Hi, thanks so much. I'm not sure what it's called. I was able to use what was already on the chair so I never bought any before. I hope you find it!
I am astonished at how similar our set ups are haha. My chairs are velvet pink and brown and are set up just like that with a tea table in the middle
Oh wow! Great minds think alike. :)
Great work. I'll be doing my ottoman this week. It won't be as fancy as your update though lol.
Thank you! I'm sure it will look great!
Did you staple or glue fabric to keep fabric in the crease along the "wing" of the chair
At the top of the crease it was way too tight for the staple gun so I just used the glue. Towards the bottom it was a little looser but still hard to reach the wooden area so I only managed to squeeze a couple staples on each side but I mainly used glue.
@@RandomBitesofaSweetLife thanks.....I have a similar chair. Would love to redo!!
Did you mix the chalk paint with anything or did u put it straight on? Also did it make the chair stiff
I only added a little water. It is a bit stiff but if you sand it down a little with a very light sander that helps. And just with general use it loosens up too. Also adding more water helps. Since it was only on the back I didn't do that. But I do have a couch painting video on my channel if you want to check it out. I sanded it a little after painting and we sit on it all the time and it is not stiff at all.
So glad I found your video!! Have some chairs that desperately need recovering too, but wasn't sure how to go abt some areas. Love how u solved some "problem" areas w stuff most people have around the house. Questions though, how are the hot glued areas holding up & does the paint on the painted fabric rub off at all? Thank you & I really appreciate your help!
I'm glad you found it too and glad it was helpful. The chairs are doing great. The glued areas are holding up just fine. They really look now exactly the way they looked when I first made them. I was concerned about the glue and the white part getting dirty but they're fine. They get used at least once a day but I have to say they aren't chairs that anybody sits it for very long and are not used extensively like our other furniture but they are used daily. The painted part has not rubbed off at all. It's on the back and sides so not much touches them, but those areas have been fine also. Thanks for stopping by. :)
@@RandomBitesofaSweetLife Thank you for such a detailed answer. I really appreciate it! Hope u & yours are staying well & healthy
Hi... I'm just embarking upon a similar project. What grit sandpaper did you use?
Oh cool. I'm having a really hard time remembering the grit but I think it was probably 60 at least because I didn't want to have to work too hard. I hope that helps and all the best for your project! :)
Beautiful job! I have an old wing back I’m going to redo come January. Still collecting materials. Can I ask where did you get the black trim and what’s the correct name for it? Thank you!
Oh nice! I hope it comes out great! I got the black and white fabric from Amazon. I'm pretty sure I linked to it in the description box. (I have to go back and double check).
Random Bites of a Sweet Life thanks for responding! I’m asking about the black rope trim you used to cover the staples and seams.
@@staciegrant624 No problem. :) Oh gotcha...The black trim was part of the chairs originally. I pulled it off at the start. I just painted it black.
Nice
Thank you
👏🏼
Thank you! :)
I can't wait to try this. Could I use a primer on the wood instead of sanding it ?
How do I know when to use chalk paint vs upholstery paint?
Primer should be ok on any wood parts. It might help to use even a light sanding paper just to get any shine off if there is any. That will help even the primer to stick. If it's not too shiny you might be fine skipping the sanding all together.
Chalk paint vs upholstery paint. I'm not exactly sure. If you find upholstery paint in the color you want, check the label and see how it recommends to be used. It may not be good for all fabrics. If it is, it might be a better option. Chalk paint seems to be great for most furniture fabric so a good alternative when you're not sure what to use.
Hopefully this is helpful. Let me know if I wasn't clear or if you have any other questions. :)
Beautiful!
Where did you find the stripe fabric?
I got the fabric from Amazon. I linked to it in the description box. Hopefully it's still available if you're interested.
Very nice
Thank you!!
The chairs were cute, but you made them FABOLOUS! I really enjoyed your tutorial. Where did you get the striped fabric?
Thank you so much! I ordered the fabric from Amazon; amzn.to/2CO6jQI
How many bottles of fabric paint did you use ? I’m looking to paint my whole chair and also is the chalk paint better than the satin paint?
Thinking back I'm almost positive I only used one bottle of the black paint (8 oz.) If it wasn't one, I know for sure it was no more than 2.
Hi, I am very impressed with your reupholster skills. The chairs came out beautiful. I want to try this in the future.
In the meantime, I wonder if you can help me with another decorating question. I am soon moving into an apartment I have rented in the lower level of a raised ranch. Two rooms are carpeted. The carpet in the living room is very neutral and just fine with my furniture.
However, the carpet in the bedroom is an unpleasant shade of red. I suspect that both carpets were applied over concrete. The red carpet looks like the type of indoor/outdoor carpet used over concrete. I can't afford to replace the red carpet or buy enough small carpets to go over it. I was wondering if it is possible to paint it with a compatible paint. Since the carpet is quite thin, I thought I could apply the paint with a roller so the carpet wouldn't become overly saturated. I thought that since I plan to use a darker but harmonious color, even if I got a somewhat "tweedy" effect, it could still be very attractive. In fact, I saw a carpet that I do like that actually makes a large "swirly" pattern by combining a second color over a base. Of course, I would have to check with my landlady first. I thought I could buy a small piece of a red carpet like what is on the floor, and paint it with the same paint and pattern I have in mind, I could then show it to her and ask if she'll approve. BUT MY QUESTION TO YOU IS: Have you ever heard of someone painting a carpet? If so, what type of paint product did they use? This carpet has no nap whatsoever. I think a paint would give a more consistent coverage effect than a fabric dye. What are your thoughts?
@@marilynvalenti6809 Hi Marilyn. So interesting that I never saw this question from you until just now! I would think that painting a carpet wouldn't work but personally, I'm adventurous enough to try it, if as you said, the carpet has no nap. I'm curious though, what did you decide to do?
The chairs looks beautiful can you please tell me the tools you used ..the name of your sand gun? and the staple gun? you used please
Thank you so much! 💕The sander is a Black and Decker Mouse Detail Sander and the staple gun is made by Freeman. It's one that needs to be attached to an air compressor. Those aren't common to just have 😊 so you could definitely use a manual stapler gun for reupholstering.
Thank you
Amazing job! So, this was posted almost 3 years ago - I am wondering how they held up?
Thank you so much!! I did an update video in October 2020 showing how the chairs looked 2 years later. (I think it was 2 years). You can check it out here if you want: ruclips.net/video/wk6pVnxv2hs/видео.html
@@RandomBitesofaSweetLife Thank you! I watched. You are very creative!
Absolutely beautiful! New subbie from FB "all things home decor"!
Hey!! Thank you so much and welcome! I have to check out your channel too. 😊
Random Bites of a Sweet Life Thanks! Please do. I just uploaded a new video today.
LOVE ❤️ THE Music!!!!
Okay, can you please help me do my two chairs?
Thanks! I would if I could. :)
10 thumbs up!!!
Thank you so much!! :)
How much fabric did you buy?
On my order history, it just shows 5. The exact item I purchased doesn't appear to be available anymore so I'm not sure what quantity it was sold in. It was likely sold in yards so maybe 5 yards... I hope that helps.
How does the chalk paint make the material feel?
On this it was a bit rough on the edge strips but everywhere else is smooth and soft.
This is great also I'll send a plug of my chair I'm redoing just because you are very talented and I would love to know what you think?
Thank you. :) Please do. You can email me any time.

What u
Is the paint
The paint I used? I showed the paint in the part of the video when I went to the store if I'm remembering correctly. But let me know if you still need anything.
👍🏽👌🏽👏🏽💯
😊😊
Idk why. But the spray adhesive has never worked for me??
It depends on the material. I've had problems with it sticking to certain things too.
You are amazing. I am in Saratoga Springs NY, what's your location?
Aww thank you!! 😊 (I'll send you a message).
Strathroy Antique Mall stole this video and is passing it off as their own. It was posted on January 31, 2019.
Thank you so much for letting me know. I really appreciate that!! I just called them out and reported this to YT. :)
The chair looks great, but I wish you had been more specific as to which tools you used. :)
For example, rather than mentioning Black & Decker you could say, "Using a corner saw...." or "I used a ______ to remove the trim."
Great specificity on colors used!!!
Thanks for watching and thank you for your comment. I think the only real tool I used was the sander. It's a "mouse" sander since it's a mini version. True, no need to mention the brand especially if it isn't sponsored anyway. 😆
Good video terrible music
Thank you and...ok. To each his own. :) Thanks for watching though. :)
I loved the music!
Love it
Thank you so much!!
