      That’s cool. You must come from a community that all you relatives stuck around. Me being a first generation American, I only knew my first cousin growing up. It wasn’t until I got older that knew about my relatives in the old country and only met the majority of them as an older adult. I have very few family memories so I envy someone like yourself to has such a large extended family.

    I am African American and have done my DNA and was surprised to see, albeit small, Peruvian ancestry (along with Spanish and Basque) - should I assume there was a Spanish/Latin slave trading ancestor in Louisiana who was part Peruvian? Amazing stuff!! Love your channel, it has been helpful in my research to watch your content!! Thanks!!

      Don't assume anything. You can make a hypothesis of what you think is most likely, but just understand there may be other possibilities. These admixture percentages are not accurate enough to make big assumptions based on just the numbers.

      @@ProfessionalGenealogistReacts Thanks for your reply!! My mother also took the test (and 4 cousins we found as DNA matches on ancestry) and we all have this small percentage Peruvian as well as the Spanish and Basque which made us pay more attention to it! Also, we are trying to break the slavery wall on the other side of the family - it's so exciting yet sad to be able to trace so far back on the side of the family with a lot of European ancestry - but on the other side of the family it is proving very difficult...still trying!! Fascinating subject!! Thanks again!! 😀

      @@HuemorDGAP I can understand hitting the wall as an African American, but sometimes even the smallest piece of information can lead to something. My great grandmother, who was born in 1905, had always said that we did not have any Native American in the family, but everyone in the family including her brother said we did. Turns out she was right, as it turns out her material line was of European ancestry that had a relationship with a black man in the 1700s.

      Tracking my ancestors in the state of Durango, Mexico to the early 1700's I've found records of people listed as "mulato esclavo" (enslaved)
      I have a family line of "mulatos libres" (free) spanning five generations until the daughter married a white (Español) guy, which could explain why on my grandfather side siblings looked different.
      And Spanish conquerors moved from Mexico and Peru, but it would still be interesting to find how does this end up in Lousiana. Have been struggling tracing ancestors back to Spain.

    My paternal side grandmother was adopted by her Aunt and uncle in London and then they emigrated to New Zealand. It would certainly be interesting to know what the backstory was to that adoption. I can see from birth records that her aunt had recently lost a baby, a daughter. And her biological mother had several children already. Her adoptive parents never had any other children. It might be that they were unable to and because of the loss of their only child that my grandmother was offered up as a replacement. Who knows.

    I grew up with only four first cousins and lived close to six second cousins. Did have about eight other second cousins but only saw them at funerals. After my grandparent's generation died off, that stopped. Due to genealogy, have been in contact by email with some of them.

    One thing I've learned is not to take these tests too serious. Especially when their updates come in. Doing a trustworthy family tree will tell you more. Ancestry. com can be misleading with family tree matches also. 🤷‍♂️

    • @ProfessionalGenealogistReacts
      @ProfessionalGenealogistReacts  4 месяца назад +10

      Depending on the ancestry, figuring out how a DNA match is related to you (whether on Ancestry, 23andMe, FTDNA, or MyHeritage) can be difficult to decipher. When it becomes misleading (at least, in my opinion) is when using tools like ThruLines and Theory of Relativity, where the software works to decipher a more specific way that you connect to your matches. The issue with those tools lies in the fact that they utilize the family trees built by other users, so the errors with other people's trees can mess with the results with ThruLines and Theory of Relativity. This becomes especially bad when an inexperienced user makes a bad tree packed full of really egregious errors and then they never log in again. One reason Theory of Relativity is better than ThruLines - you can confirm or reject the theory.

      I think that depends on what you mean by „take too seriously.“ I started doing genealogy research back in the late 1990s before these tests came out. I took a 23 and Me test, uploaded the results to MyHeritage, FamilyTree, LivingDNA, Gedmatch, ADNTRO, the Spanish site, and I’ve found them generally useful and surprisingly accurate. It’s no surprise to me that all the tests have me coming out 65-92.5% Scottish/Irish (even accurately pinpointing Northern Ireland), 6 % German (I have the baptism records from Jever, Niedersachsen in Germany of my 2nd great grandparents from circa 1812 ), and the remaining DNA being generated Northwestern European. Plus, I’ve located many useful matches. These tests are only helpful as an adjunct to, but not a replacement for, old-fashioned paper genealogy. You have to know how to use them properly and what their limitations are. People forget that DNA is not synonymous with international boundaries for one. So, if you know you have an ancestor from say München, don’t expect the tests to tell you you have an ancestor from this particular city. But, you might see a broadly southern Germany region pop up. These tests are good for telling you about general regions you’re ancestors are from, but they are often not country specific in many cases. What you won’t see on these tests are things like a Chinese person taking the test and the test saying they have 100% British Isles ancestry. These tests are not like ouija board games you get at Christmas, play with for awhile, then toss away. Just be wise in using them.

    • @TheDanEdwards
      @TheDanEdwards 4 месяца назад +3

      "not to take these tests too serious." - when you refer to "these tests", are you referring only to what they call the _ethnicity_ calculators? Because I spend my time looks at _matches_ , and I have no doubt over the reality of the matches to other people.

    • @torstenheling3830
      @torstenheling3830 4 месяца назад

      @@TheDanEdwards And I think the ethnicity calculators are accurate too. I just don’t think they give you much by way of actual information that’s helpful, like names and dates of ancestors, where they lived, etc. That’s what the paper genealogy does for you.

    I did the MyHeritage test a few months ago. It came back as 85.5% Finnish ( not surprising considering both sets of Grandparents were born in Finland.) and 12.5% Scandinavian. I knew I had some Swedish in my ancestry, but was a bit surprised that it was as much as that. ( especially since my daughter tested at 49% Finnish, all from me, and my sister came back as 97% Finnish by using different tests.
    The big surprise for me was a result of 2% Inuit. Which at first, I had no idea how to account for. However, a little research led me to the possibility that it was due to Sámi somewhere in my background. For one, my paternal Grandfather's branch of the family was from North enough in Finland to have contact with the Sámi. For another, I came across the results of a genetic test taken from a Sámi male, which returned a result of 10% Inuit. Finally, In a video on the Sámi, I saw two photos, One of a young woman, and the other of a younger girl, that both bore a very strong resemblance to my sister. Though not conclusive, It certainly seems a good possibility.

    Adoptee here. My birth mom told me she and my birthfather were friends and the nigh it happened he was on her faster than she could think and...before she could say anything it was happening. She said, that's 'how it was in the 1960's." His side of the story was that she invited him in and she was in a nightgown and didn't say no. He was not invited and just showed up. Later she told me she always had a hard time saying no. I am like this also. I'm too nice. I can see how he interpreted this as a go ahead and she interpreted this as a date rape. I believe her. My birthfather said it couldn't have been him because she was "so easy" and was with a lot of guys (classy thing to tell me) and he denied it. So I got a DNA test thru Ancestry(haha) and his sisters come up as my aunts. The Ancestry DNA test put to rest anything he said to the rest of the family. Thank god for DNA tests. Love your channel. P.S. From a lot of adoptee's perspectives, we are mostly genetic. I feel bad for kept people that you cannot see it like we can (its like that joke about fish not knowing they are in water.)

    Any recommendations for DNA Tests for Asians/South East Asians? I really want to get my boyfriend a test cause he always wanted to do one. He is Thai with some Chinese and Karen Hilltribe ancestry and I’d love something with more specific regional breakdowns for Asians. He only has limited information from his father’s side of the family and unfortunately most of his family members on that side have passed away.

    Lucky them! 😊
    I have over 180 matches > 100cM. Most of them with a segment ratio less than 10 and no hope of ever finding out our relationship.
