They’re shocked at something that is common knowledge in Latin America. It’s only the Latinos who are born and raised in the US that are this painfully ignorant of their own roots. Which is so ironic considering how obsessed they are with race, ethnicity, and identity.

I did one of these a few years back. I was basically 80% West African, mainly Nigerian. 17% Western European. 3% a mixture of East Asian and indigenous American. You know how much my life changed after those results? Not a damn bit.
That's because you probably aren't a racist, race* essentialist or cultural Marxist. For normal people it's usually at most just an interesting fact about ourselves that might create curiosity which let's us ponder and learn more about the groups of peoples that preceded us.

Mamma Mia!
As an Italian it’s always fascinating to see how people actively show their disdain for Europe, only to buy into italian stereotypes like eating pasta, dressing well, making hand gestures and so on.
Well we do make hand gestures and dress well. The pasta part is true too, except our food is much more than just pasta and varies a lot by region.
They forget the Latin Lover stereotype, the origin of which is Italians. At least they didn’t say the mafía, most every time I put on a suit someone tells me I look like a mafioso.

Saying I hope "I'm 100% Puerto Rican" is like saying "I hope I'm 100% american"... Please learn about history
True. But nobody really teaches these things.
23andMe (the test these people took) has a section called “recent American ancestry” in which they identify, by genetic markers, populations from several specific regions in the Americas. It includes: Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and several other Caribbean regions. The Brazil section is even divided into subcategories of different regions of Brazil. What is the significance of this? It means that in those regions at least, there is enough genetic homogeneity over a long enough time to identify the population as distinct. This means, from a genetic standpoint, these are now identifiable genetic populations. If your ancestry is 100% “recent American ancestry” from Puerto Rico, it is perfectly accurate to say you’re “100% Puerto Rican”.
When they say 100 percent american, at least I do, understand it as 100 percent with ancestry from colonial United States of america.

The only similar test (before Watson, Crick, Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin) that I know of in my family was the "Aryan test" ( to be more specific "the aryan certificate")that my grandfather took in Germany under National Socialist rule to prove that he was at least 3 generations "German".
Back then, they (mainly those in power) were also fascinated by "races".

On top of that, aside from attempting to speak with some fake adopted accent when saying place names in English and maybe speaking some heritage language at home, they probably know little to nothing about the cultures they so desperately want to be a part of.
This reminds me of a Latina I met at my university who used the English pronunciation of her name when introducing herself to me, which was great, but then her friends lambasted her for not pronouncing it as it would be said in Spanish. Different DNA tests will show different results, it comes down to the database they have and more samples. So if you do it again, you’ll likely have different results. Also, Arabs are getically related to Eurøpeans (at least to one of two of the main branches that make up Eurøpean DNA).

just to clarify for people: these "results" aren't some hard coded definites. They are population/correlation based and those companies go "hey, we see these genes in France, so we'll call these 'French genes', so anyone that has these will be 'part french'". There are a LOT of assumptions these companies make, and because one fails to see a specific ethnicity in their histories or sees one does NOT actually mean that their family history is wrong.
But with enough data such "assumptions" can become very reliable.
@jackmclane1826 they don't look back in history, they extrapolate how similar todays DNA of a region is to yours (and the confidence intervals are often pretty... generous). So these tests really only tell how often your DNA is present in a population of a certain region nowadays - major movements or redefinition of country borders, especially over the centuries, are not factored into these specific tests.
You may be right but that doesn’t absolve these folk of their cringe
100% correct. My cousin is the manager of one of these labs, and she talks about how these tests are glorified carnival games, and mean absolutely nothing beyond “this is where people live currently, that have semi similar dna”
Well the big thing about this as well is that you could say have a grandparent whose parents say emigrated from say Spain or France, but moved to Italy and raised the grandparent. The grandparent was raised fully in Italian culture and then comes thru Ellis island to USA. Tow generations later you take a DNA test knowing thinking that your heritage is Italian because obviously your grandparents are “italian”. But the test will show “Spanish” which even though doesn’t necessarily tell you everything because of the same reason you thought you would come up Italian. The whole genetic history thing is kind of a crapshoot that doesn’t mean a whole ton.
I’m not saying there aren’t definitely genetically distinct racial profiles but I think in the modern era it’s very muddy waters
I have always found it so fascinating how much stoke people put into race. I am African(black if you were wondering 😂). I have met people from all sorts of races and not liked or disliked them based off races. If i was half anything else i wouldn't care.
When people tell me that i should be more attached to black people and act as a representative i hate it. I don't consider black people to be my people, in the sense that our skin tone doesn't automatically mean we are the same. My people are those i have bonded with, fight with, suffered with and enjoyed life with.
But the idea that race is supposed to be that important is shocking to me because, you may have disagreements or morals to those in your own race, so that kind of group thinking is just dumb to me.
Maybe i am missing something, if you think race is supper important i would love to hear you perspective.
No wonder it was so easy to colonize your ppl
💓💓👏👏
Race isn’t important. It’s who you are. At least to me
In the U.S black people self-identified by our skin color because it was forced on us by the dominant society. Laws were also created around this forced identity which prevented us from obtaining the same rights and privileges as our white counterparts. After a couple hundred years of this we eventually began to see ourselves as a collective instead of just an individuals because thats how we were always viewed and treated as. This is why if someone goes against the "collective" they are often viewed as a "sellout" or a "traitor" for better or worse. Not sure if this will help give insight but I appreciate you asking to hear other people opinions
Essentially, everybody has tribalistic tendencies, aka they want to be a part of the superior group. Sometimes that means you're racist, sometimes that means you join a gang, but usually that means you appreciate your friends/family.
The type of people who believe that their own race is the superior tribe will always try to convince others of that race to start acting in a way that benefits the tribe. But just because others chose to join the wrong group doesn't mean they can bring you down or indoctrinate you. That's my thoughts, anyway. Have a nice day.
Thank you guys for calling this what it is, it's racism! Pure and simple.. I appreciate you guys calling them out while making me smile and laugh 🤣
Funny how whites never point out real racism in America 🤦♂️
I'm white British. My late husband was Arabic, so my children are brown. One of my sons married a white British girl, so I have blonde grandkids. His brother's wife is from sub-Saharan Africa, so I also have black grandkids. I love them all. Skin tone is just melanin. Some people have more, some people have less, and so what? Culture, language and religion (if applicable) are also important, honouring and preserving these things is a priority for many families, but no one ethnicity is ''better'' than any other. And in a country like the US, where almost everyone is a mixture of different ethnic groups, this obsession with race is beyond ridiculous.

As a Puerto Rican, most of us are like 70% European that’s like the average. It’s funny bc if you’re from the island a lot of them don’t like being black and many will refuse to admit they are black but they love being white whereas in the states it’s the opposite. I’m personally half European 1/4 Congo and 1/5 native Taino then a little bit of like Hawaiian in there and I’m darker than most of my family as effectively a lightskin. My sister and I have faced harassment from older family members for being darker. On the other hand many people born in the states love our complexion and it feels almost fetishized at times also people don’t know whether to consider us black or white or what because we are very dark in the summer but much lighter in the winter but we always get boxed in as you’re either black or you’re white or you’re Mexican but people don’t realize the Caribbean is very different from central and South America in many ways. It feels to me people all want to just put labels on everything but don’t want to take the time to understand what they are labeling
My family's from the Caribbean too and we're also mostly European, namely, from Spain and France. Have a decent amount of African (lot of aunts and cousins who look from the south of Africa, like Mandela), but some of us couldn't pass as black if we tried (myself included); and maybe even an Asian ancestor somewhere in there. Zero Native American, since they were entirely wiped out in Cuba. Color has never really mattered among my relatives. Some people in Latin America are still flat-out racist, but I'd say most people don't care about stuff like that-or at least not very much in Cuba.
People need to realize that demographics differ from country to country, and that includes Latin American ones. Some are going to have more black, white, or indigenous people living there, other countries might have more of a mixture. Cuba had a minority Asian population that immigrated there and assimilated into the larger populace. It varies.
It seems it is a one way jealousy though..
You dont see 'white' Americans being as ridiculous in thier racial fixations as certain other groups.
@@peterpan408 yeah cuz why would a white American want to be black and experience that kind of racism? Thats like asking why rich people don’t wish to be poor
@@AnimaVox_ in pr it’s funny because for the most part they really don’t care about race. Everyone is just Puerto Rican. Everyone is family. The whole issue stems from when the colonists separated the white people from Europe and the natives/africans and created that social hierarchy based on race that still lingers in the minds of older generations. Many young people really don’t see the concept of racism on the island because for the most part your favorite cousin could be black but your brother is white so it really doesn’t matter. I do think the concept is dying off in pr however the divide between people from the island and people from the states might reignite that. Many in the states grew up so focused on racial identity that they always try to put a label on Puerto Rico but the islanders only want to refer to themselves as Puerto Rican not black or white or anything else so it’s an interesting dichotomy

And the way you know about this is because they’re often not shy about it to the point where they seem weirdly proud to have a mental illness.
When it comes to their culture, I reckon, for a lot of them, their interest in it is fairly recent when it became more popular to read out your stats. I guarantee when they were kids, they wanted to hang out with their friends and do whatever was cool at the time (that likely had nothing to do with their culture), but their parents would drag them kicking and screaming to cultural events with the rest of the family. The Aztecs themselves were colonizers. They originated from the American southwest and migrated to Mexico where they slaughtered other natives to carve out their empire.

The year is 2024, and "educated" Americans still don't know the difference between Nationality, Ethnicity, and Race.
An Oversimplification of the 3
-Nationality = the country you're from
-Ethnicity = the origin of your genetics
-Race = your gene expression (what you look like) in context with WHERE you're located.
Your ethnicity is unwavering and pre-determined before birth while your RACE can be rather fluid. Race can be tricky b/c it can heavily depend on where you're located, so let's use me and my brother as an example.
We're both American. We're both essentially 1/3rd British-Irish, 1/3rd French-German, 1/3rd East Asian (predominantly Japanese). However, I'm considered "White/Caucasian" as where he can pass as "Asian" due to the differences in our genes/gene expression, but this is only applicable to where we're located. Lemme explain..
If we were to be in an ethnically homogenous community that's "white AF," him and I would be different races. However, when we go to Korea or Japan, he's not seen as White OR Asian, but a "half-breed." Similarly, many "white Hispanics" in America can be seen as simply "white," especially in more "urban communities," but place them in a Nordic country where the standard of being "white" is synonymous with being ethnically Nordic, then most of those "white Hispanics" would NOT be categorized as white.. You can also apply this to many lighter-toned "black" people in America and sub-Saharan West African countries. A lot of black people would stick out like sore thumbs in a place like Cameroon LOL.
I think we really need to expand our racial terminology in America b/c if I'm white, my brother's white, an Icelandic person is white, AND a Sicilian person is white.. then what does "white" even mean?
makes sense, most people in my country (sweden) think im bosnian or something even though my dna test shows im finnish

The one thing I like about these DNA stories, because I am messy, is when people find surprises like "wait something doesn't add up. My mom is this person and my dad is this person but the test doesn't add up". The wildest one was that mother that raised the child was not the 'mother' because the child had the genes of the twin the mom absorbed in the womb. It made me learn about chimerism.

I took one of those DNA tests. My ethnicity was exactly as expected. The secret brother however was not. Turned out to be a happy surprise in my family and has worked out well. I'm glad I took the test. However, I would caution people before taking these tests if they feel like their world would be shattered if they unearthed their parents aren't who they thought or they have secret siblings or something. Because if that is the case, you will find out. And there is no turning back.
I found ANOTHER secret sibling when I already knew of one. He contacted me and was a really chill guy. Went to my high school three years behind me,I might have been bumping into him in hallways without even knowing it my last year. I knew my dad was a dog, but he was far worse than I remembered after talking to the guy.
It's unsettling how much they seem to equate people's personal identities with these arbitrary elements. Acting like the results of a DNA test are somehow going to force them to reassess who they are and what they've been through.
It will force 'them' to do so. Well adjusted people don't need outside stimuli to 'force' them to reassess, they monitor and adjust as needed.
That's what happens when you make your "race" your personality.
