We appreciate your professional input! We are absolute idiots when it comes to geography, no getting around that, but thanks to this DNA test, it did spark a bit of interest, and now we are both a bit more versed. Also, it was fun to get an honest critique on one of our episodes. We hope you have a great week!

Thank you for saying out loud that we have ancestors who we didn't inherit DNA from. The DNA test companies don't even touch on this. This is important because whether or not you directly inherited their DNA, they are still your ancestors. Without them you would simply not exist.

I totally agree with what you said about the different various dna companies. All my British cousin matches come from Ancestrt, FamilyTreeDNA and 23&Me, while MyHeritage is where all my Swedish & other European cousin matches show up.

Suggestion box: Could you do the family tree (even a Dirty one) for your followers? Especially if they have brick walls? Maybe showing how you utilize DNA matches.

When he said Spanish and had unexpectedly high Irish I thought maybe some of the Spanish related to the celtiberian. But then finding the MesoAmerican made sense. For me Myheritage is high on my Iberian, part real ancestry and I think some celtiberian. Though I get plenty Scottish Irish on MH too, they missed my Germanic.

When I first tested with 23andMe, my ethnicity included a very small amount of Iberian and I had to look it up. It disappeared and I had a small amount of Italian. That disappeared and now the trace amount is Greek & Balkan, 0.5%. I consider it noise.

I have a match on MyH at 71cm that shows as extended family. He's a 4th cousin. My 3rd cousin at 67.1cM is under distant family.
I have 4 different branches where siblings and first cousins were early Mormon converts so I swear I'm related to half of Utah.

23&Me must be the only company that slaps French & German together, because I have French (my father) & German (my mother) ancestors. Ancestry & MyHeritage keeps them separate. In fact French ends up getting lumped into “Iberian” with MyHeritage. Ancestry originally did that in the first place & then later they changed it.

It seems like the guy on the left would be a fun person for you to look into, since he seems to have no info on his ancestors.

I think that his ancestor comes actually from Mexico with so many matches there. I bet the family heard the great-grandparents speaking Spanish and thought they were from Spain 😂

On Ancestry I found seventh and eight cousins who doesn’t have any matching ethnicity but has similar DNA, which I feel like exposes the ethnicity percentages as wrong.
Ancestry also locked the pair parent, dna painter and tree preview feature.
Really sucks that after paying for dna test you can’t look at your DNA.
They probably lock the cousins section next.

I take the results from MyHeritage with a grain of salt. It’s far removed from what I’ve researched on my tree and where my family comes from. Ancestry is closer.

  • @camillapetersen7720
    @camillapetersen7720 2 месяца назад

I am not sure about who MyHeritage define as 'close family,' so this is just pure speculation on my end, but it could be that any of your DNA matches, whom you share 300 centimorgans with or more, are defined as 'close family'. Maybe.

Actually, Germans commonly get Eastern European if they're from NE & SE Germany. This would be completely unsurprising. Consider this, west Germans tend to be R1b, and east Germans R1a (among other Y haplogroups). I love your channel, but please do more research on Germans. You can actually split them into 4 quadrants and how they differ. NW Germans similar to Dutch and even English, North - Danish, Northeast - Sorb & Polish, SE - Bohemian and Italian-ME substrate, SW - French and even Iberian.

Also, I have a question for you, @professionalgenealogist. I was always told that my great grandma was jewish (sephardi). I took the Myheritage test and got all North Western European except for 3.5% Ashkenazi jewish and 9.7% North African-did not say Sephardic which I know they test for. Does this mean there were converts or something?

In MH I have ~8,370 DNA relatives, most of them are quite distant, only 7 above 91 cM (includes my grandma, dad, daughter and a H1C), the rest are all unknown
extended they're putting H1C at least for m, sharing ~263.9‎ cM
