    I’m 99.6% Northwestern European and also got 0.4% West African. This was interesting, because I also have very fair skin, hair, and eyes. Plus, no one in the surviving family had any idea where that would come from.
    Come to find out it’s not a mistake in the reading; I came in contact with a distant cousin who actually lived nearby, and imagine our shock when we met in person and we look completely different. She’s very obviously black, I’m very obviously not.
    While unable to deduce the exact ancestor, we discovered which line we share.
    Unfortunately, it’s very likely a slave/master situation that ties us together, but we’re still grateful to have found each other. I always thought I came from an all white family, but now I know that I have more extended family that are a beautiful array of colors. ❤️

    They sort of treated it like a report card from one semester to the next that they “improved” and became more Italian or more British.
    I took a DNA test specifically to find out who my unknown paternal great grandfather was. The results answered the 110 year old mystery, and also enabled me to build out that part of my tree too, by reaching out to my dad’s 1/2 cousins. Before the test, that branch was the barest branch of them all ending at my grandfather, after the test I was able to build it back a further 4 generations on that side to my 4th Gr. Grandparents.

    I had a super strong idea of what my genealogy was on my moms side because she grew up in Komiza which is a small island off Croatia, that was identified as Balkans. That was cut and dry, my dads side took me for a loop. His side was middle eastern, north African, irish, german, western Asian, and Scandinavian. So my DNA test was an interesting mix.

    They don't state who they tested with but it was 23andMe - I can tell when she corrected her husband it's British and Irish and not just British. I love when he sees the high percentage for this and says British and starts to crack up and she corrects him to state British and Irish. As you stated she looks very European but does seem to get a result for those with early colonial American stock especially from the Southeastern USA which does normally show trace amounts of DNA for African and Native American ancestry in people who are predominantly European. This would be for people who have the early colonial Virginia/Carolina's 1600's ancestry. I'm surprised though that none of the physical features of this ancestry is reflected in her looks.

    I think people are more excited for the DNA results because most people already have some picture of their genealogy. Obviously not everyone, but many people can go back about 3 generations and they have family stories ect. The DNA test, however, reveals a part of you that cannot otherwise be accurately measured and sometimes something people have zero clue about. It is what it is. Nothing to be frustrated about.

    23&Me will identify Native American DNA when other companies won't, and the tools at GedMatch will show the same. At 23&Me, I have a very small trace of Native American, and my dad has the same segment plus another. So, despite the tiny amounts, I'm convinced that this is a real result but from a liaison at the beginning of European settlement. In my first test with 23&Me, I had an equal trace amount of Subsaharan African DNA, which in subsequent updates disappeared.

    Just because her cousin had Native American results doesn’t confirm anything... it could have been from the cousin’s other parent. I have a cousin that was convinced we have Native American anc story on our shared line, but the only thing all the shared cousins have is European and African. I DO have Native American DNA results, but they’re from my other side, confirmed. So if my cousin was trying to use me as proof of anything, that would just be wrong.

    I have confusing about our family results and I did 3 different tests with slightly different results. The biggest percentages were very similar just in different percentages but MyAncestry showed more Scandinavian when 23andme and MyHeritage don't. Also only 23andme showed me being 0,1% North-African and the same with my dad 0,5% North-African and multiple family members with these results 0,3 Coptic Egyptian and 0,8% Levantine. I don't really take those too serious but it does show up in most of my family matches. My haplogroup maternal is: J2a1a and my paternal haplogroup is: G-Z37368 which is less common then the Maternal one.

    I used ancestry, my heritage mostly for help with building my tree. I am confused though about ancestry’s split between my parents. I have very few matches on my father’s side (his parents immigrated recently from Germany). For some reason ancestry dna has my mother’s youngest brother and his children related to me on my father’s side. Any idea why that would happen?

    • @ProfessionalGenealogistReacts
      @ProfessionalGenealogistReacts  7 месяцев назад

      I'm unsure of the answer as to why that would happen. Only thing I could think (but this is just a guess) is because of something in the the trees connected to your profile or their profiles, similar to how wrong information can affect results on Thru-lines.

    QUESTION: when you draw out your family tree, which side does the male or female go on? Say on a vertical tree, is the male side to the left and right for the female? Or does it even matter?

    • @ProfessionalGenealogistReacts
      @ProfessionalGenealogistReacts  7 месяцев назад +1

      It is most commonly done with male side to the left and female to the right, especially with modern family tree software, but it isn't any sort of hard and fast rule. I have seen many trees, especially hand-drawn trees, where they do not adhere to this rule. Adhering to the rule does help if you share the tree with other genealogists since that is what most commonly deal with and when the rule isn't applied, it can make the tree a bit more confusing to understand.
