- The already-tremendous RPG grows stronger with Persona 5 Royal. Style, substance, heart, and soul cover every moment of this beautiful game. Atlus' RPG Persona 5 Royal is now available on PS4. You can read the full written review by Michael Higham on GameSpot: www.gamespot.c...
Well deserved. The original Persona 5 was already basically a masterpiece and Royal just makes it so much better. The gameplay changes make the whole journey so much more enjoyable and it was already pretty brilliant the first time. Damn man 10/10 for sure
Agreed
Did you see the 70 review on metacritic talking about Atlus and persona being sexist and misogynistic? It's Soo pathetic.
@@spiritualsoul2711 was that a critic review or user review?
I bet you havent reached the 5th palace when u commented. Imo that palace and the boss fight made royal worse than vanilla for me.
@@auditionko was that one okumura? it seemed pretty much the same with the exception of the haru robot.
The reviewer Michael here! Wanna thank yall for watching, Jess and I put a ton of effort in getting the review and video right, since we obviously loved P5R! If you got any questions I'd be more than happy to answer them here! (or if you wanna talk about anything really lol)
10/10 review for a 10/10 game, well done 👍
@@Rafael-kr6zv I appreciate that!
Thanks for the 10/10, it damn well deserves it. Great review, I hope more people watch this review and play this masterpiece!
this or 7 Remake?
How about doing a story analysis of persona 5? About its inspirations from jungian psychology, its symbolisms and what you interpret from the storyline? This was an excellent review but i would love to see an extended discussion with spoilers.
120+ hours, no way I’ll have this done before FF7R comes out. Darn you spring for dropping all of these hits at once!
Tamer Ciftci yea I’m definitely waiting to pick up that one for sale
*Coronavirus has entered the chat*
"You called?"
You should be glad about all of these games now....there might not be another new major game after ff7 for a while.
@Tamer Ciftci length=/=quality. Do people say tlou is bad because it's not a super long game?
@Tamer Ciftci the second in re2 is a lot shorter, and mostly the same, just remixed. Yea re3 isn't a big game, but length never mattered to me. Most metroid games are very short, yet considered master pieces. Metroid prime can be 100%ed in 5/6 hours, yet is one of the highest rated games ever.

So persona 5 royal is the 17th gamespot 10/10 game. nice
Well deserved.

Wow, that’s rare for Gamespot.
Mackie Lunkey it actually is tbf
I bought the ultimate edition today and I am already 7 hours into it. This is my first Persona game and oh boy, this is just beyond amazing.
You know that horrible feeling of hoplessnes and mourning that you get when losing all of your friends as you move to another town? That's how beating Persona 5 felt to me and I never forgot it. No other game made me feel like I had actually lost everyone that I grew to care so much about.
I remember thinking, "No! Screw wherever I lived before! Sojiro needs to adopt me and I'll just stay here. Pancakes, curry and cofee forever!"
Unrelated: I hope the Okimura palace is better this time. I always dread doing that one...
We'll said, you really feel like you're the protagonist saying bye to family. It's brutal.
i hate shidos tbh
Just finished Okumaras Palace and it's even worse if you can believe that. Other than that I felt the same way after beating P5. I can say Royal goes above and beyond and I am in awe playing through it atm
@@HydraXChaos gonna be honest, i dont see what was so bad about okumura's palace, was it the airlock maze? Cause that was a bit tricky buy not too hard
Though i did have a lot of trouble with the boss, mostly cause i was shit at battling at the time
There are a few changes, but generally it's basically the same palace. Though they did make it somewhat easier to clear
This game blows the internet. Many people considered it masterpiece
I'm in love with this game but people barely talk about it... At least where I lurk. All I see is Resident Evil 3 Remake and Doom Eternal (which is fantastic, btw). Oh, and Animal Crossing. A LOOOOT of Animal Crossing.

I put roughly 700 hrs into the original, and when I heard what this was and that it was coming out, I knew from the get-go. I gotta say, it really was worth the price I paid. Take it from a guy who spent like $240 on it

Persona 5 already a Masterpiece, but with Royal my life is COMPLETE! We are very lucky able to play one of the BEST RPG in the world of all time. Everyone who plays video games MUST PLAY THIS MASTERPIECE 👍👍👍❤❤❤
Maan, after finishing the game i just can't hear "I believe" without feeling a chill down my spine, if i already loved the original, P5Royal definitively won that 10/10
2nd outlet I see give P5R 10/10 and he’s right Throw Away Your Mask is godly.
Omegaslashbuster1 The game has way more 10/10 besides IGN and Gamespot lmao
Gamingbolt also gave it a 10/10.
This review actually got me very emotional. Great work, guys!
The best JRPG of this generation deserved 10/10
Imo. There is no JRPG that is better than persona 5
Of all time
Easy the best! I could also include FFXV too! I can't choose which one is the best tho!
This is a 10/10 for sure
@Retendo, it's completely true. P5R is the best JRPG in existence.
It's almost unbelievable how amazing and polished persona 5 was! I like how the reviewer said he thinks about it almost every day. Every element of the original was so awesome and now they made it better. Wow
Kevin Allen an unbelievable game. it’s hard to find a game with more charm & style! Excited to dive back in!!

@@MadOrange644 it's really worth it, I too played the original, but after I finished Royal I thought that it was so worth it. I was reluctant in the start but when I played through the whole game it felt so great.

This review, thanks to Michael’s "Chill Hype Vide” in this review has me hyped to get this. But sadly I have a deep backlog of games to work through right now, so it’s gonna have to wait for now.
If you haven't played P5 back then I highly advise you to get P5R and give it highest priority. You won't regret it :)
@@Kejosruler I hear you I'm 40 hours into P5 now and seriously considering stopping to start Royal. I have to limit my play though because it has become a distraction for my daughter while she is doing her school work. She is all about the story, style and that incredible soundtrack
@@robertocruz5238 How old is your daughter? 40 hours in is not too bad, I would say. But if it is too big a distraction for your daughter... I don't know. Personally, I finished P5R last night after 156 hours haha
@@Kejosruler She's 10 and sits there humming along to all the tunes. I ordered the steel book version of Royal earlier this morning because I just may have a problem. I know it sounds insane & I just might be, but I kinda want to play both to completion to get a full view of the changes made in Royal. But don't have time for that and playing Yakuza 0 before Ghost of Tsushima comes out.
@@robertocruz5238 That's so cute :) Great she also enjoys the game. Don't worry, I totally get that you want to see the differences. I played P5 back when it was released (it was one of the very few games I got on day one) so it has been quite a while. However, I would say that it enhanced my experience that I could compare the two to one another. I don't know if I could play them back to back, but I totally get you. IF you remember, let me know what you thought after finishing each of them :D
That Okamura boss fight still gives me nightmares
Oh snap. Futaba gets involved in a All Out Attack Now?? That's Awesome
I've seen playthroughs of this game and it looks awesome to say the least
you are fucking everywhere.
It's amazing.
DUDE I SEE U EVERYWHERE WTF
Great review. I just want to add the genius dialogue options which most people overlook, just shows how self aware Atlus is.
I think people who dislike this game are the ones who skip dialogue a lot, or the ones who totally missed the point of its messages, ironically.
Turn-based games aren’t to my liking but damn this game delivers it to you on a totally different level. Art style, music, character/character development (Sojiro, Futaba, Kasumi, etc), and story are all 10/10 (Except for a teensy on the Okumura arc).
I bought the vanilla and this was my first persona. I was blown away how amazing this game is, now i get to play it on the switch, can't wait. Great review
The one thing I really wish they wouldve added is incorporating the romancing more into the main story, as in main scenes like the beach day changing depending on if you've romanced either makoto or ann yet... also if for ng+ they added a negative/positive boost if you're with multiple girls, causing tension in certain scenes. What can I say, I love the romance aspect too much 😅
This truly a masterpiece unlike any other I love this game!!!
if only Square Enix could be half this good.
My favorite game of all time now gets even better!
I'm an all time Xbox user but this makes me want to get a playstation, it's terrible because the next generation is around the corner and i really really want the series x, but this games Playstation has are just art.
Francisco Orozco Imo a PS4 is worth it for Persona 5 and Bloodborne alone. Lol
Same I really want the series X to but I am a bit sad about some of the ps5 exclusives I'll miss out on. I do have a PS4 however so I'll continue to enjoy exclusives for that until it's no longer supported
@@yungfelix17 for sure!, But at least u have the PS4 so don't miss out this beauties. Haha
PS4 is by far the best console out there. The best thing about Xbox 1 is the backwards compatibility.
Not being a troll I would honestly like to know, why would you really like an xbox it doesnt make sense to me with their lack luster library?
The game is one of the best in the world since it is somthing that was well thought out
Best JRPG of the generation , and may be the best RPG period of this gen ( Unless Cyberpunk 2077 meets the hype ).
@udlock9 what are u talking about with an “american game” do u refer to cyberpunk, cuz thats being made by CDPR which is a polish developer.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Persona 5 Royal are equally brilliant to me.
Now Gamespot does the real good reviews
I've never played this game before. I might have to give it a shot before jumping into FFVII.
Fully recommend it man. The original p5 was once my goat (3rd now). This is basically a very high budget definitive edition of it
Do it.. you won’t regret it! Promise!
i dont think u can finish this game when FF7 Remake come out ,it's too long haha
It's truly a one of a kind experience. There's a reason it gets all the hype.
Becareful the ff7 rm will look like shit by comparison
You know, before all of this... I didnt think they would've ever stopped P5...
*boy* was I wrong
The soundtrack is from another world.
Literally my favorite PS4 game of all time 🤧
- Add item filtering by stat and usage, it's annoying to scroll down to find a specific item(especially in Okumura battle). It felt really clunky.
- The end game needs more days. It felt very limited.
- The whole "you're too tired to do anything" is annoying. After you've sent a calling card, you can't explore the city to prepare. I don't understand why they prohibit this.
- More SP restorative items and places to get them.
- The difficulty goes up and down. Okumura has been the hardest battle for me out of all battles and it's at the middle of the game. I liked that battle, it gave me enough challenge. Battles after that have not surpassed it.
- I would enjoy more if confidant ranks affected the story more. Some scenes after you've romanced Ann, for example, felt awkward. It would be nice that in some point of the story, it would come public that you're dating someone to everyone.
- Some of the enemy placements felt annoying. Sometimes they were too sparse, sometimes an enemy could attack *when you exited the save room.*
It's one of my all time favorite games, but that doesn't mean I cannot criticize it. It's a 9.5/10 for me. It's not perfect, I sometimes felt annoyed by its flaws, but it's one of the most perfect games I've played in a long time.
GREAT review!! This is indeed a masterpiece and I've played it like 6 times since it came out on Steam.
Feels a little bloated sometimes, but its shortcomings wouldn't subtract enough decimals for it not to be a 10/10.
Never played a Persona game in my life and was never a fan of RPGs, let alone JRPGs. I picked up P5R at Target since it was on sale and figured I could sell it if I didn’t like it. I’m now 30 hours in and completely hooked. This game has single handedly made me start watching reviews for other JRPGs and I am now super interested in the genre. Looking to play the Xenoblade series next!
It was 10/10 straight out of the gate.
Persona 5 -10/10
Persona 5 Royal - 11/10
I played P5 on PS3 and sadly didn't finish it, I got far and really enjoyed the experience. I bought Persona 5 Royal for the Steam Deck and it has had my attention all night. 15 hours in and Kamoshida hasn't been defeated yet, such depth. It will be years before we see a superior turn based RPG.
Enjoy bro the game just gets better and better
Joker still the best Smash Bros DLC.
2:54, Billy Kamez who voices Maruki also voices Naoto Kurogane in Blazblu Cross Tag Battle; while I get the hint of Naotos voice, I think I hear him more like Ventus and Roxas from Kingdom Hearts
This game is basically 11/10. Because the OG was 10/10 so it makes sense lmao.
Very well written review
I Like this Game Atmosphere!!! so Calm & Groovy!!! 😀😁😀

"The definitive version of a modern classic" - now where have I heard that phrase before like one and a half weeks ago? 😂
Good thing I just started playing persona 5 and put only 20 hours in. I just picked up the phantom thieves edition
Am I seriously the only one who didn’t earn the third semester in my first play through? I’ve met people who didn’t even know that was possible. How embarrassing :/
Note: get Maruki’s confidant to rank 9 by November, don’t make the same mistake I did.
@Rams if you don't get the 3rd semester the game simply ends like the original Persona 5

I just got done beating the original after 95 hours. I'll let this one cool for a few years.
@Sparka Shut the fuck up pirate. This game deserves every bit of the price tag and more.

This comes out and I still haven’t beat Persona 5! I’m only like 20 hours in though I have too many games lol.
Same here. I'm stuck on the 3rd boss
And Satan still saves christmas
The cutscenes and dialogue scenes look great but when it gets into player control 3D world mode the graphics looks like I'm playing Pokemon on 3DS
Best game ever made.
Lmao no, one of the best but not THE best
Agree 👍 It's probably the best game I've ever played ❤️
i love persona 5 royal it was fantastic
I am going to get a lot of flak for this but hear me out, I am trying to understand the fascination with this franchise, I bought the original Persona 5 last year, tried it out for a bit and put it down til now. I was just so overwhelmed with the wacky story, characters and overall gameplay. I heard that it goes somewhere between 100 to 200 hours of gameplay and the first 6 to 7 are literally just the tutorial. Now dont get me wrong I find a lot to like about this game, the art style and music is just beautiful, and I am not someone with a short attention span and do have an interest in Japanese culture, should I give this another try or just give up and move on?
There's loads to read, and some places may get iffy, but trust me on this when i say, once you set its shortcomings away you'll find it to be quite a amazing experience, if the original wasn't your fortee then perhaps this one will be the edition to change your mind, they improved quite a number of things
But its your choice man, but i say you should take the dive and atleast see what all the hype is about
Persona 5's biggest issues are its pacing and it's bloated content. If you're feeling overwhelmed and underwhelmed by persona 5, (which admittedly does get better after the 7 hour tutorial), Play Persona 4 instead. That game has tighter focus in its characters and better pacing, featuring a "tutorial" that's only 2 hours long by comparison. Persona 4 is really the favorite of the series.
@@FreshTillDeath56 couldn't have put it better myself
@@FreshTillDeath56 5 hours in and I'm just bored, like I said the art style is beautiful, but it's just go into caste, stop, turned based combat, go down another hallway, rinse and repeat. I'll take a look at Persona 4 thank you for the advice.
while i love persona 5, i have to say it's gotta be one of the most overrated games ever. it seems very niche to me and many people drop it for the reasons you mentioned
god damnit. i just got my copy of persona 5 last week from my friend.
Is this game worth buying for a 3rd time? I bought it in Japanese then i bought it again when it released in English is this worth buying and playing again for the 7th or 8th time?
Hmmmm I would say yes. However, I only played it once back when P5 was released and I loved going through it again and comparing the differences. If it has been a while since you played it last time I think it should be okay. But I am not sure because seven times really is a lot xD
going to play Persona for the first time!! Any tips I need to know?
enjoy the game...dont be perfectionist on your first play..
Check out superbutterbuns beginner's guide, the one main thing I can say for beginner's is that you alwwys have less time then you think you need for preparing between dungeon runs so you'll have to start planning ahead of time, I ran out of time early on bc of how absorbed I got with the games day to day Iand its characters and before I knew it I had no time left to finnish the first dungeon/the games stages that are layerd with varying degrees of difficulty the further you get into them
Bring tissues
If you are playing Persona 5 Royal, remember to take it easy and do things at your own pace. The game is very long but even if you don't get everything done there is always New Game+.
Well here we go again
Yet another perfect score

Omegaslashbuster1 Agreed
@@Omegaslashbuster1 I would give it a high 9 if you haven't played the first one and a 8 if already own P5
@Retendo Depends but I would give it a high 8 at most because of the lack of cross save progression for certain aspects. Both games are on the same console afterall.
@Retendo Yeah but it's still on the PS4. God Eater 3 has cross progression between PS4 and Switch, The Witcher 3 has cross progression between Switch and PC. Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate has cross progression between 3DS and Switch etc. I don't have the time to max everything again but yeah that's probably my problem.

5 hours🤦🏻♂️
two complete different games
Why does everything have to be 100+ hours nowadays? Would you honestly enjoy being chased around by nemesis for that long?
120? Bruh if u played base 5 it’s like 70 hours
Actually Royal is shorter but longer at the same time. Let me explain. So in Royal, there are more story parts in the game but the thing this review failed to mention like many others, is that they significantly shortened the palaces, which means u can finish the game a bit faster or basically at the same time as original persona 5 but Royal would feel longer due to the extra story lines that are included in the game but you would clock the game at a shorter amount than the original game due to the shorter Palaces which makes the game very well paced and makes the player have a richer experience overall not to mention the missing voice acting in some sections of the game are now voiced in Royal.
It took me 107 hrs to beat the non royal🤔
Yu Narukami 102 hour on p5
To answer what a lot of u are saying, it took me 100 hours to beat base 5, and about 12 hours an arc. In Royal it’s taking me less than 7 per first 2, and there’s 9 arcs. 63 hours plus mementos and stuff like that
120 just to even beat the original for me LOL
I played the original only once 3 years ago and forgot a bit about the story..i think i will buy this.
John Blake same as you and i havent finished the original, i only play until the casino palace and i bought royal now. U should buy too
Same and I enjoy Royal a lot
I love this game.

No. You start from scratch
DESERVED 🔝🔝🔝
I dunno I've already sunk 200 plus hours into the original not to mention there are so many new games coming out. Might but it if it's on sale later on.Why didn't give owners of the original the option of downloading a upgrade patch
because they added a lot of new content here and that Royal is PS4 Pro enhanced and they didn't want give out an update to the PS3 version of the game.
Adds 50+ hours of new content and it changes the story in minor ways while adding 20 hours of new story
Do I have to buy the game again or is there a dlc expansion I can pay for?
You have to pay full price for it.
@Retendo I mean, I love the game, but the fact that Its full price is questionable. For a newcomer, its a must buy, but for someone who played the original, I am not so sure.
@Retendo I bought Royal too, and I'm in the final palace (99 hours and 39 minutes in), its great but I can see why people who haven't played the original are not interested in it, especially because its full price
As much as I love Royal, it still can't beat Persona 4 Golden for me.

Can you finish everything in a game on one play through without using a guide?
VeganPorKKebab nope...u News guide for social link
Nope. There is literally no way you can get all the time management stuff done perfectly on your first attempt with no guide. There is even some stuff you can’t see until New Game plus anyway
It’s very hard without a guide
in my ng+ playthrough i actually complete almost all the confidants only the twins i did until the 3rd rank for the platinum trophy
@@BensyBens The twins require either a guide or the extreme luck to stumble upon the specific personas they asked for, unless you just psychically know where to find and how to fuse them
TheJadedJames the only good thing about the twins confidants is that is the only confidant that you can upgrate inside a palace/mementos or outside without time panic but without a guide it’s so hard to max especially for newcomers
Idk if this is an unpopular opinion but I personally actually found the ending to be unsatisfying. Persona 5's ending was much better in my opinion. I can't go into detail since I don't want to spoil anything but I thought I'd throw this out there as a more so food for thought to compare the two.
They are pretty much the same tho.
Procrastinating Crustacean it’s the same ending Lmao. Joker just got a different ride to the train station
@@KenzoSunya Spoilers ahead.
The ending is closely similar but the execution is different.
One major difference is that Joker takes the train and his friends don't accompany him. They let him go ahead without much effort. In persona 5 they go as far as to take him there themselves which allowed for some memorable dialogue such as Makoto stating it's not important if the police follow them which was symbolic of how the group learnt not to care about what people think.
In persona 5 royal the characters basically ditch him at the train station, they could've at least walked him to the train or even taken it with Joker.
Two pet peeves I also had with the Royal ending.
1. Why is Maruki a taxi driver of all things, it does not make sense with his arc? Why not something similar to Tae Takemi where he's a neighborhood therapist, or seeking therapy himself to learn from his mistakes. He could've just drove up in his own car I guess but his appearance basically amounted to nothing since he leaves after a one liner which doesn't add much to the conclusion.
2. After all the build-up with Surime Yoshizawa, the girl that was on the verge of tears because of the belief that Joker was dead, the one we've seen harbours strong emotions for him. Gives him one line that doesn't even really make 100% sense and doesn't even say a proper goodbye before walking off? This with the fact we aren't able to meet her earlier for a farewell gift makes this so much more frustrating in my opinion.
That's why I believe Persona 5's ending is better, it really shows the bonds between all the characters and it really captures what they were about.
Persona 5 Royal numbed it down quite a bit and I feel like they cut out dialogue just so they have less to animate since the fact there isn't much conversation between anyone makes it incredibly unsatisfying.
