Persona 5 Royal has finally released in the west so I decided to give a quick Persona 5 Royal review. This Persona 5 Royal review contains no spoilers, so you shouldn't worry if you're still deciding if Persona 5 Royal is worth getting over the original Persona 5.

    Video Essay Playlist: • Nam's Compendium's Vid...
You know, I didn’t expect to make a persona 5 video this soon. But here we are now. Now that Persona 5 royal has finally been released in the west and I’ve had a chance to play it to completion. I can give my really brief thoughts. This is going to be a bit of an odd video. My usual videos about Atlus games have been deep dives into what the game is and talking about the theming and symbolism. But this time I want to do something a little different since the game is still pretty new. I’ll be giving an overview of the new content and changes that Royal brings to the table, and also injecting my opinion on these changes to see if it’s worth picking up over the original since that game goes for like $20 at this point which is a total steal.
Persona 5[a] is a role-playing video game developed by Atlus. The game is chronologically the sixth installment in the Persona series, which is part of the larger Megami Tensei franchise. It was released for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in Japan in September 2016 and worldwide in April 2017. It was published by Atlus in Japan and North America and by Deep Silver in Europe and Australia. An expanded version featuring new content, Persona 5 Royal,[b] was released for PlayStation 4 in Japan in October 2019 and worldwide in March 2020.
Persona 5 takes place in modern-day Tokyo and follows Joker after his transfer to Shujin Academy due to being put on probation for an assault of which he was falsely accused. During a school year, he and other students awaken to special powers, becoming a group of secret vigilantes known as the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. They explore the Metaverse, a supernatural realm born from humanity's subconscious desires, to steal malevolent intent from the hearts of adults. As with previous games in the series, the party battles enemies known as Shadows using physical manifestations of their psyche known as the Persona. The game incorporates role-playing and dungeon crawling elements alongside social simulation scenarios.
Persona 5 was developed by P-Studio, an internal development studio within Atlus led by game director and producer Katsura Hashino. Along with Hashino, returning staff from earlier Persona games included character designer Shigenori Soejima and music composer Shoji Meguro. Preparatory work began during the development of Persona 4, with full development beginning after the release of Catherine in 2011. First announced in 2013, Persona 5 was delayed from its original late 2014 release date due to the game not being fully finished. The game's themes revolved around attaining freedom from the limitations of modern society, while its story was strongly inspired by picaresque fiction and the party's Personas being based on well-known literary outlaws and rebels.
Persona 5 was met with critical acclaim, with praise given to its visual presentation and art direction, cast, gameplay, and music. The game is considered to be one of the greatest role-playing games of all time and was nominated for and won multiple awards. The game shipped over three million copies worldwide by the end of 2019, making it the best-selling entry in the overall Megami Tensei franchise. Several other related media have also been released, including two spin-off games, Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight and Persona 5 Scramble, as well as manga and anime adaptations. The game's cast has also made appearances in other games, such as Joker appearing as a playable character in the 2018 crossover fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

@@SanctuaryADO That's crazy that you act like it was a kind gesture. When that should just be expected since 99.9% of goty/ultimate editions have all the DLC in them for free. Royal is a greedy ass game. They locked DLC behind a whole 60 dollar new purchase and also they had the nerve to release new paid DLC instead of just having it in the game for free. Great vid as always! I love Royal but I agree on how easy it is. I'm a complete JRPG newbie and have played all the Persona games on Easy or Normal so when I went into royal I did the same picking Normal because of my familiarity with Persona 5. Needless to say by the 4th Palace I was incredibly overleveled and one turning almost every enemy so I decided to change the difficulty to hard. The game was still not as challenging as I wanted it to be so I ended up challenging myself by only using one persona and not doing the strength confidant at all. The game was finally challenging and gratifying for me despite missing out on some of the games features just to challenge myself I ended up loving the battle changes and my self-imposed challenge. Keep up the great videos! :)

Izanagi-no-Okami is my favorite persona of all time so it's nice that he's powerful, it's also nice that the game allows you to max every stat of your personas without needing to level them via the alarm system. Came from the persona 3 review and both that video and this one were great.
You forgot to mention the changes involving ailments however. You can now pair even more elements and ailment conditions to get knockdowns and bonus damage granted you have them unlocked. Also there are elemental attachments to weapons, and the red enemies in dungeons are now super mini boss like enemies that usually have no weaknesses and can really only be killed through the new changes.
I think this game is too easy in a lot of ways and so you don't really need to utilize these tactics, especially on normal. But these changes are game changing and definitely important for future persona and smt games.

TL;DR: Honestly, I feel like the biggest changes that make the game so easy were that of Chariot's Insta-kill and Strength's Special Treatment, to the game's detriment.
Insta-kill now providing EXP, Money and Items from battle (in addition to a free Persona) without any resource cost makes it extremely easy to become overleveled, especially since Jose's Mementos prize buffs work on Insta-killed fights. Combine that with the fact that you can get it by the second palace pretty easily, and that it feeds into Special Treatment, and it becomes pretty clear how broken of an ability it now is. Some could argue that the ability needed a buff in the original game (I'd argue it needed a better description), but this feels like a major overcompensation.
Special Treatment, on the other hand, I have no idea why it was buffed. The ability to ignore the fusion level cap in any MegaTen game is an incredibly strong one, and I feel like the original game understood this well. Since you got it from maxing out the Strength confidant, that meant you could only get it once Joker reached around level 70 or so (which is around the level that most people get to the very end of Mementos). Effectively, your reward for maxing it out was to not have to grind nearly as much for the highest level personas, along with being able to carry this ability into early NG+. P5 Royal, for whatever reason, decided it was a good idea to instead give this ability at Strength Rank 5, which means you can pick it up around the middle of the fifth palace. Essentially, you play half the game normally, then spend the second half just absolutely breaking the crap out of it.
For example, the first truly broken I got early was Ishtar (the ultimate persona of the Lovers). Ishtar learns Salvation, the best healing skill in the game. For 48 SP; fully heal all allies and cure any non-boss specific status ailment. Now, just having that about 2 or so palaces early is pretty good, but not busted due to its cost. However, Ishtar also learns Spell Master via leveling which halves SP costs. 24 SP for a full restore? Yeah, that's pretty fantastic to have early, and being able to pass on Spell Master is pretty great too. I haven't mentioned Ishtar's trait yet; Grace of Mother simply reduces the SP cost of healing skills after they've been cast. How much you might ask? _75%._ Combine this with Spell Master and you're looking at the best healing skill in the game for a fat 6 SP. *That's less than Media, the basic group heal spell you get during the first dungeon.*
And that's just the tip of the iceburg in terms of broken crap you can get waaaaay earlier than what was probably intended. Attis (Hanged Man's ultimate persona) is another good example for the ability to drop Thermopylae (a full set of party buffs) whenever for 30 SP. Satan is also decently useful, but mainly because he gives the best armor in the game when itemized, though you can't get him until after the 6th palace. Keep in mind, the "downside" of having to pay large sums of money for these fusions is more or less rendered moot thanks to Insta-kill allowing for infinite, fast money grinding that becomes available super early.
I went into Royal blind, save for the fact that I've beaten the original twice, so I decided to play on Hard for my playthrough. This is honestly one of the easiest RPG's I've ever played, nearing Persona 2: Innocent Sin for PSP levels of ease near the mid game. I don't usually criticize a game for being too easy; after all, difficulty is subjective, and an easy game can be enjoyable so long as it remains engaging. Persona 5 Royal, I feel, fails at that come the mid game and never recovers outside of the super bosses. I feel like because of that newcomers to the genre would ultimately end up getting bored of the game's battles and progression if they get these abilities during their playthrough. The difficulty is to the point that part of me feels like the original version of Persona 5 might be the better game.
Ultimately, I feel pretty mixed on Royal. Do I regret my time with it? No, a lot of what I like about Persona 5 is still here. A good chunk is noticeably improved too. Seeing how broken you can make yourself is also kind of fun. But the lack of any real challenge makes me hesitant to replay the game, which is damn shame.

I never fully beat the game (got to Haru’s palace and just kind of fell out/lost interest at the time) I have been playing through P4G lately and it’s really gotten me back into it and wanting to play P5 through completely but to restart my playthrough since it’s been so long since that last save. I’m really tempted to get Royal but damn I just can’t decide for the life of me. Thanks for this video, def going to help me make my decision!

My main nitpick about Royal is that the new battle music isn’t as good as Last Surprise. I’m glad they still kept Last Surprise for head-on battles, but I pretty much have to get caught by the enemy on purpose for that to occur, so it’s not usually worth causing the security level to go up.

    Wait, quick question about guns:
I started the original game, but bought Royal recently and have put 75 hours into my playthrough on Royal. I got to the beginning of Kamoshida's palace in the base game.
In Royal, with the change of ammo replenishing after each battle, during the tutorial section where it introduces gun skills, Morgana explains that since guns are based on the enemies cognition (given that they aren't even real guns and just airsoft replicas), your ammo will replenish after each battle because your enemy will expect you to come to each battle fully loaded.
In the base game, did Morgana even give a reason as to why your ammo is per infiltration and not per battle?? It just seems even less reasonable and even more dumb given the new explanation in Royal, lmao.

@@HyenaFox Ok, I probably should've worded it better. P5R takes place in a different universe from P5. The reason for this is Persona 5 Scramble, which takes place after Persona 5 and since Maruki and Yoshizawa neither appear nor are they mentioned by the cast, it's safe to assume that both of these games take place in different universes. There's another reason for this, but I don't know if I should say it since it spoils the ending of P5R.

    • @HyenaFox
      @HyenaFox 4 года назад

@@SpadeOfNades ohhh right I completely forgot about Scramble. I've beaten royal, so without spoiling it as best I can, does the removal of the "meddling with the timeline" that occurs in the ending effectively de-canonize the events in Royal anyway? If the timeline has happened "as it should", then neither Maruki nor Yoshizawa would have any actual bearing on the plot (given that they don't become a Thief until the third semester and the Metaverse was destroyed as of December 24).

    • @SpadeOfNades

I love Royal it's definitely the best remake and the third semester even though I will agree it's kind of disjointed from the rest of Persona 5's plot is still some of the best persona content I've ever played. The new palace is also my favorite in the game basically every puzzle has great symbolism towards the ruler and it has challenging enemies that actually test your skill unlike most of the game which honestly I don't mind being an unstoppable bada** is super fun to me. The villain to is 10/10 he's just as good as Kamoshida in the complete opposite way and he alone makes Persona 5 Royal worth it for me. Those are just my thoughts though.

I just did my second playthrough solely on hard. I actually never used Ryuji’s instant kill in mementos and kept the EXP bonus from Jose at Level 1, and what ended up happening was that I ended up not getting over-leveled at all throughout my playthrough, and having not too much money as I played through the game. Things overall felt reasonable, but I really just think the game has to (at the very least in the mid to late game) greatly increase the HP of every enemy in the harder difficulties to give those who know the combat system more satisfaction. Especially with how easy it is to set up technicals in the battles and abusing the fusion alarm.

Personally I love this game and thought the new semester made for a much stronger and more satisfying conclusion than the ending of the original P5. Funny enough I didn't even use Ryuji's instant kill ability since I just plain forgot that I even had it, but yeah it does seem pretty broken. 😅 I have to say though, while I absolutely loved my time with Royal and felt that it was just an all around better version of P5...seeing what they've done here actually makes me not want to buy Persona 6 when it comes out. At least not the vanilla version. Throughout my time with the game, I couldn't help thinking to myself that I would have enjoyed everything just that much more if I had gone in completely blind with no knowledge of how the original Persona 5 played out. Thankfully it had been long enough since my last playthrough of Persona 5 that I was still able to enjoy the Royal revisit without the game ever getting boring, but the fact is that aside from the handful of new scenes that were added to the base game, I still knew basically everything that was going to happen right up until the start of the third semester and that was honestly a shame. If quality of life improvements and significant story expansions like the ones seen in Royal are just going to be the norm for the Persona series going forward, then I think I would just be better off waiting to play each Persona game until the re-release with all the added bells and whistles comes out. That way, I can go in fresh and experience each new game in its best possible form.

  • @SharpestSniper99
    @SharpestSniper99 2 года назад

Honestly I wouldn’t say the third semester doesn’t matter compared to the rest of the story as you claimed it was, it truly feels like the logical next step to take after the threat of Yaldabaoth. After all, if it wasn’t for their suffering and troubles in life, the Phantom Thieves wouldn’t be the people we see them grow into by the end of the game, so seeing the worth of their growth being put into question and tested was absolutely the best way to truly cap it all off. Yeah there were a few bumpy steps along the way but it was SO WORTH IT!

P5 overall is great but as the title if this video says, it's not with flaws which by the sound of things also kind of affect royal and strikers somewhat. Not in a big way to tell people it's bad narratively or gameplay wise as there can be arguments P5 is about on par with ff7(original) and tales of symphonia.
I just kind of feel like what you say tells me atlus for all the game play improvements didn't do one overview on the original story where yeah akechi is one character that needed an expansion to his character since he surprising became pretty popular from what I can tell in the reasons why he got this expansion, but I feel they also should've tried to fix a few story points that feel like that were either forgotten or just didnt have an endgame for. Strikers I don't know if it actually addresses it I also don't know if it counts as canon anymore with how royal expands and changes the true ending with the new characters.
Sorry if I went on a tangent, it's just i think catherine full body and from what i hear about ps4 golden, it sounds like atlus foes some great game play improvements but at the same time they seem to have a few minor issues when executing the stories at certain points to feel like a complete narrative is there

As soon as you get Ryuji's Instant Kill you immediately win the game.
Enemies can't be insta-killed anymore? Go to the previous floors and run over a bunch of shadows to level up.
I gotta hand it to the secret final boss, it really gave you a way to test how good you were at using the baton pass, although it got annoying when it blocked your skills or stopped you from using baton pass altogether.
Use Charge on main dps * cough* Joker with Yoshitsune *cough *, hit a minion with it's weakness and baton pass, repeat until all minions are down and finally baton pass it back to the DPS.
Overall a great improvement on P5, the new characters were great additions and the original cast felt more fleshed out (except for Haru, ffs Atlus), but I really disliked the new "secret" ending, while the in-game scenes before the ending were awesome, the moment the ending cutscene comes on, it all goes to hell, the after-credits felt stupid as hell too, instead of giving closure on *that* character they just go "Ohhh! look at that guy that's wearing the exact same outfit! Who could it be? We'll leave it to your imagination!".

weird you say this is one of the re-releases you feel comfortable recommending, does that mean you think Golden is worse then vanilla persona 4?

I don’t think that it’s worse, I just think that there are some additions that take away from the mood that the original game was going for. I like a lot of what golden does, it even adds my favourite social link in the series, but there is a big Marie sized blemish that doesn’t jive with me too well. I have a big analysis for Persona 4 Golden planned like I did for P3 so I’ll give my full thoughts there.
