Recently just purchased a PS Vita and bought Persona 4 Golden. I don’t know why I didn’t buy one Sooner. I’ve been hooked on my Vita for the past three days.
Same! It’s like watching an episode of your favorite anime each day/night you play it, except a heck of a lot more interactive. This is my 2nd or 3rd night so far too and dang... I’m hooked as well brotha. I love my Vita OLED plus with the Vita Grafix plugin & vpk I can play it in full vita resolution. Game is incredibly smooth even when in max res and looks incredible. The only other game series I’ve played that included like 80hr+ games were the Xenoblade Games. I beat them all, except X. So, if I really like a game and story, I’m in it for the long haul. Anyways, glad to see you liked the game! Ready to take a break from my real life for a while now... haha perfect timing though with the lockdown and all 😂🙏🏼 can’t wait to get back to playing tomorrow!

@@goodyear7012 It's just frustrating to me because I get really frustrated playing older JRPGs since I feel like I always need to have a guide to finish the game. But it's not too frustrating compared to a lot of other older games, and you'll still get a good experience with P4 on the PS2
This game really has fun with the 'power of friendship ' trope. Both thematically and in a meta way when it comes to facing the culprit towards the end. It acknowledges that the trope is corny and stupid while emphasizing WHY human connection is so important on a basic psychological level.
Playing the original on PS2 at the moment and would like to finish it before i get this version. The only thing i havent really liked so far about golden from what i heard is most of the VA being changed.
Glad you’re getting to play through the original! And yeah there was a VA change for Chie and I personally prefer the original Chie because it’s the one I heard first. The new VA isn’t bad though and shines a lot better in the more serious moments, but I didn’t think she was as good as the original VA during the social life dialogue

(You forgot to mention Earthbound and Mother 3's battle streamlining feature where if you defeat the dungeon boss or your level is high enough, the enemies either run away from you or are instantly defeated when you touch them)

I just finish P4G yesterday and it's damn good game. Love it from start to finish. It's a very very long game though. Specially if you try to play Marie's quest line

It's a really good battle theme ngl. Basically all of the Persona battle themes are pretty catchy (and good), so you really can't go wrong with these OSTs.
Seems like the number of people who prefer 4 over 5 (who have played both) are about 50/50, which speaks well to how good 4 is and how well it's aged. I haven't gotten very far in either one as I'm playing both concurrently and have put in about 5 hours on each. The visuals and the dungeons in 5 are clearly superior as expected being the newer game. 4 seems far more intuitive all around both with the menus/UI and in navigating the world and figuring out what I need to do in between dungeon crawls for increasing stats, social links and stuff. In 5, when I want to find somebody, oftentimes I have no clue how to find them. As for the story and characters, I haven't gotten far enough in either game to lean one way or the other. As soon as one game hits the mark for me over the other, I'm gonna ditch the other and focus on the one. But so far it hasn't happened yet.
Finish P4G first, if you have a Ps5, P5R is gonna be release physically and is the better version of P5. I like both P4G/P5Royal, P3 is my least favorite, but I get way it has it's own fan base.
Many people have said, and I agree, that Persona 3 has the best gut-punching story, P4 has the best setting and characters, and P5 has the best gameplay.
Persona 1 and 2 (both versions) are in another league. Persona 3, 4, 5 can all be chunked into other group. 1 and 2 gave me more enyojment for beating since they harder. 3,4 and 5 are just a blast to play and chill while still some grind.
After experiencing Persona 4 and 5, I think I am looking for a more challenging but fast-paced, turn-based combat system. I definitely wanna try both versions of Persona 2 eventually, but in the mean time, I've started playing some of the SMT games since I had a 3DS to play SMT IV on already
@@Cinnacal pro tip. Its not illegal to download roms of dead console games. Ppsspp emulator is a thing that works fine and its where i still play p2 and p3. The website i get the roms from is cdromance. I know what people think of piracy. But honestly its not a new product thats being sold by offical retailers. Buying used is risk and it dies eventualy. Theres whole comunitys dedicated to preserve this old games. U might wanna use it to ur advantage :)
@@Cinnacal id also like to add i found p3 harder than 4. Cant rly talk about 5 tho. Ive watched threw. But i dont own ps4 so never played myself. P3 had phys damage split into 3. Cleave, slash and another one.... It basicaly meant more elements to play around wich in term made it slightly more chalenging. The ds version i also dont know anything about of the series. I think ur vest is playing threw 2. Altho before 3 they didnt have social links. But character development made up for it imo. P1 is just weird imo. As a child it confused me and is the only one i dont have fond memorys off. Gameplay did not age well either.
Only turn based RPJs I got into were EarthBound(Mother games), Pokémon, and now Persona. Love all three game series now. Just finished Persona 5 Royal about to play P4G
Try out Xenoblade. This guy really sold it short here (criminally short). The games reviewed positively across the board and XC3 was even a contender for Game of the Year.

The emotional climax you were making fun of is about Rex's decision to work to make the world a better place rather than sinking into despair, thinking the world a cesspool of unsaveably evil and selfish people. Also the battle system in that game is like 500 times more fun than the P4 one. And I say that as a P4 enjoyer.

Should I play vanilla persona 4 before golden? Like would I have a better appreciation for golden's new endgame like I did for Royal's third semester since I had the context of the original? Not having access to golden is also kinda why I'm asking. I don't have a vita or a pc so my only option is vanilla on ps2 or ps3.
P4G is the Royal/fes version of P4. Meaning all the things that were in vanilla P4, still are in P4G. Making P4G >P4, the same way, P5R is the better way of experiencing P5. And probably P4 for ps2 may be an expensive buy now. You can wait for a port of Golden for Ps4/5 and Switch, follow playtroughts of it or see the animes those are the cheaper options. In P4G new ending, you need to do Marie's social link and do her dungeon.

I haven't played P4 or P4G, but I also despise most JRPGs for the same reasons you mentioned and yet, Persona 5 Royal is my all-time favourite game ever.
For a video that’s supposed to be about “why I should play Persona 4” there sure is a lot of talk about why you think JRPG’s are trash. Literally over half the video was that and it just sounded like you complaining the whole video. You can have your own opinion but don’t make most of the video about your opinions on JRPG’s and the issues you have with their narrative structure or gameplay mechanics when you are supposed to be reviewing/persuading your audience to play this game. Just about every point in this video you very obnoxiously and annoyingly have to relate it back to your frustrations with the genre. By doing that, It sounds like you don’t even like this game at all. You talk about your issues with JRPGS’s so much that it ends up ruining anything good you have to say about Persona 4 because you have to throw some unnecessary and annoying comment in about how you hate JRPG’s. Get your opinion out in the beginning then just review the game. No one cares after that what your opinion on the genre is, the audience is here to see you review/persuade them to play this game but it’s hard to take what you say as true when you spend so much time actively shitting on the genre. This video ends up being more like “Why JRPG’s are so unbelievably awful. Oh, but Persona 4 is kinda good I guess”. I’ve never been more annoyed with someone trying to review a game. Like I said, your opinions are your own and that’s fine, but dude I don’t need you throwing it in my face every five seconds when all I want to know is what you think about the game and why I should play it.
Never in my life did I ever find a turn based rpg boring I can see why some people do but to me when you play a good one it just clicks and there are plenty of them out there

I've been considering playing Nocturne. I tried SMT IV a while back and enjoyed the combat. I wasn't able to get that far, but I want to try the Nocturne remaster when it releases in English. Though, I've heard it's not that great of a remaster after the Japanese release, so I'll wait and see

great video! like you, JRPGs have never really interested me because i found that the combat can be slow at times but I recently played Persona 5 Royal and really love that game. I am really interested in trying Persona 4 Golden on Vita so I was very happy to find your video. One hesitation that I have for going back was that it the game interface might feel dated after playing the newest game... Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I started playing the original Persona 4 (on the PS2), and it felt pretty dated to me. But Golden has better menus and quality of life changes, so it wasn't that archaic. One thing I missed from P5 though was that I couldn't preview which social links--same thing as confidants but with a different name--were in which location, but there aren't anywhere near as many locations as in P5, so you'll remember where the social links are. One other thing I think you should know for Golden that P5 doesn't have is this: you cannot hang out with any social link on rainy days. P5 doesn't have this and it really screwed me over for a while cause I would leave the house and not be able to go back inside unless I wanted to waste a time slot. Again, if you play Golden, it shouldn't feel too archaic compared to P5, but just make sure to change the battle commands to "control character" each time you get a new party member 'cause the game automatically sets it to auto battle when someone joins your party.

Personally Persona 4 golden is my favorite game of all time followed by Persona 3 with Persona 5 not making it into my top 10. I just think Persona 5 has much weaker characters and story then 3 and 4 still a great game thought and love the video.

As for Futaba, her palace is great tbh. I really wish Persona 4 had the dungeons of Persona 5 because that would make the characterization a lot better, but it's still good as it is for the Persona 4 dungeons.
But at least it's consistent and tied to the Persona lore. What really rubs me (and I suppose the guy who made this video) the wrong way is when, all of a sudden, because reasons, you defeat the enemy because of friendship. At least in P4 (and frankly in neo-Persona games in general) the idea of friendship is a consistent theme, and in P4 in particular bonds are framed as the "lenses to see the truth", and izanami is the embodiement of lies and deception, so ehh it checks out. I do think that that specific segment didn't age that well, but I dunno at least it fit with the themes of the game unlike god knows how many japanese media where friendship only makes the mc want to win more and THAT is what decides the battle.

It still could be better though since basically any friend zone option except Haru is just super casual. There’s also some odd points where a few s links are slow or just boring, but I still think it’s better at least
@@Cinnacal I think the P5 party member confidants has some standouts like Akechi and Kasumi but has some boring ones like Makoto while the p4 crew are just good overall, I think the biggest problem in P4 was that most s links were slow and took until like rank 5 or 7 to get good.

@@Cinnacal Far to often to be able to say, figured was known and was your personality maybee thing with the whole cynical name (like how Cynical Brit aka TotalBiscuit R.i.p. was though in my eyes he was overall quite better at being it and fit him along with often sounding more joking/light and less often --> though I should point out I barely watched him especially towards his end I think). --> Like your main part of outro: "be sure to leave hate and dislike etc..." sounds more like you streesed/annoyed by it being a thing that happens more than memeing/joking about it which is in part by how often you are being "insulting" to certain things/groups/types throughout. I mean every youtuber has their own identity/bit and I watch quite a few of the ones that like to be "bad" (cynical / jerky / trolly / "memeing") etc... (Jim Sterling + Terroriser being the quickest 2 I can think of though there are others like one that name escapes me but his outro is calling his viewers F word :D , but comes out joking sounding).

Too dramatic change, would be a Remake. P4G is an enhanced version of P4, so it still has that P2 graphics. But that's always the issue of playing, retro games, they still have the graphics they did back then, until a remake is made.
I never played Persona 4, but I did see videos of it and I absolutely hated it. To me the game was so bad it made me root for the villain or made me want to be one. The combat was okay, not as good as Persona 5 but it wasn't anyone's fault The only links I liked was Kanji and Ai because I liked their character development, Ayane, Ai and Yumi are also my favorite characters The biggest issue I had with this game is the characters in the game, to me everyone is an asshole. The whole conformity in the social links I didn't care for. The way the MC was an uncaring jerk when someone is in pain. Everything about Operation babewatch 2.0. The girls abuse to the guys at the beginning of school, the campout, the Amagi inn was the last straw. Not to mention Morooka, the guy at the other line you get the phone number from the girl and Hanako make me act like Uncle Ruckus possessed. I can't play this game for I am afraid of what I'll be if I do. I'm scared of being a crappy person.

I've put in 160 hours, 3 NG+ on P4G and I can't get enough of it. The writing is sometimes better than most movies about young people.

Seems like the number of people who prefer 4 over 5 (who have played both) are about 50/50, which speaks well to how good 4 is and how well it's aged. I haven't gotten very far in either one as I'm playing both concurrently and have put in about 5 hours on each. The visuals and the dungeons in 5 are clearly superior as expected being the newer game. 4 seems far more intuitive all around both with the menus/UI and in navigating the world and figuring out what I need to do in between dungeon crawls for increasing stats, social links and stuff. In 5, when I want to find somebody, oftentimes I have no clue how to find them.
As for the story and characters, I haven't gotten far enough in either game to lean one way or the other. As soon as one game hits the mark for me over the other, I'm gonna ditch the other and focus on the one. But so far it hasn't happened yet.
Finish P4G first, if you have a Ps5, P5R is gonna be release physically and is the better version of P5.
I like both P4G/P5Royal, P3 is my least favorite, but I get way it has it's own fan base.
Many people have said, and I agree, that Persona 3 has the best gut-punching story, P4 has the best setting and characters, and P5 has the best gameplay.

Persona 1 and 2 (both versions) are in another league.
Persona 3, 4, 5 can all be chunked into other group.
1 and 2 gave me more enyojment for beating since they harder. 3,4 and 5 are just a blast to play and chill while still some grind.
After experiencing Persona 4 and 5, I think I am looking for a more challenging but fast-paced, turn-based combat system. I definitely wanna try both versions of Persona 2 eventually, but in the mean time, I've started playing some of the SMT games since I had a 3DS to play SMT IV on already
@@Cinnacal pro tip. Its not illegal to download roms of dead console games. Ppsspp emulator is a thing that works fine and its where i still play p2 and p3. The website i get the roms from is cdromance.
I know what people think of piracy. But honestly its not a new product thats being sold by offical retailers. Buying used is risk and it dies eventualy. Theres whole comunitys dedicated to preserve this old games. U might wanna use it to ur advantage :)

P3 had phys damage split into 3. Cleave, slash and another one.... It basicaly meant more elements to play around wich in term made it slightly more chalenging.
The ds version i also dont know anything about of the series.
I think ur vest is playing threw 2. Altho before 3 they didnt have social links. But character development made up for it imo. P1 is just weird imo. As a child it confused me and is the only one i dont have fond memorys off. Gameplay did not age well either.
I have over 200 hours in this game and I have just finished it again but I am already itching to play it again.

Try out Xenoblade. This guy really sold it short here (criminally short). The games reviewed positively across the board and XC3 was even a contender for Game of the Year.

Xenoblade 2's main theme is persistence in the face of despair. The emotional climax you were making fun of is about Rex's decision to work to make the world a better place rather than sinking into despair, thinking the world a cesspool of unsaveably evil and selfish people.
Also the battle system in that game is like 500 times more fun than the P4 one. And I say that as a P4 enjoyer.

Should I play vanilla persona 4 before golden? Like would I have a better appreciation for golden's new endgame like I did for Royal's third semester since I had the context of the original? Not having access to golden is also kinda why I'm asking. I don't have a vita or a pc so my only option is vanilla on ps2 or ps3.
P4G is the Royal/fes version of P4. Meaning all the things that were in vanilla P4, still are in P4G. Making P4G >P4, the same way, P5R is the better way of experiencing P5. And probably P4 for ps2 may be an expensive buy now. You can wait for a port of Golden for Ps4/5 and Switch, follow playtroughts of it or see the animes those are the cheaper options. In P4G new ending, you need to do Marie's social link and do her dungeon.

What I meant is would I appreciate the P4G additions and ending more if I played through the vanilla ending first, kinda like how Royal's third semester makes more sense if you've already beaten the game. Well that and I don't have a Vita or a PC so I'm stuck playing it on my ps3 regardless.

I haven't played P4 or P4G, but I also despise most JRPGs for the same reasons you mentioned and yet, Persona 5 Royal is my all-time favourite game ever.
A very close second and third are Kid Icarus Uprising and Xenoblade Chronicles.

For a video that’s supposed to be about “why I should play Persona 4” there sure is a lot of talk about why you think JRPG’s are trash. Literally over half the video was that and it just sounded like you complaining the whole video. You can have your own opinion but don’t make most of the video about your opinions on JRPG’s and the issues you have with their narrative structure or gameplay mechanics when you are supposed to be reviewing/persuading your audience to play this game. Just about every point in this video you very obnoxiously and annoyingly have to relate it back to your frustrations with the genre. By doing that, It sounds like you don’t even like this game at all. You talk about your issues with JRPGS’s so much that it ends up ruining anything good you have to say about Persona 4 because you have to throw some unnecessary and annoying comment in about how you hate JRPG’s. Get your opinion out in the beginning then just review the game. No one cares after that what your opinion on the genre is, the audience is here to see you review/persuade them to play this game but it’s hard to take what you say as true when you spend so much time actively shitting on the genre. This video ends up being more like “Why JRPG’s are so unbelievably awful. Oh, but Persona 4 is kinda good I guess”. I’ve never been more annoyed with someone trying to review a game. Like I said, your opinions are your own and that’s fine, but dude I don’t need you throwing it in my face every five seconds when all I want to know is what you think about the game and why I should play it.
Not to mention he threw Xenoblade 2 under the bus even though it subverts a lot of the pain points he keeps complaining about.

Persona 4 is probably my favorite of the modern Persona trilogy, and if you love the combat in P4, you'd enjoy SMT Nocturne
I've been considering playing Nocturne. I tried SMT IV a while back and enjoyed the combat. I wasn't able to get that far, but I want to try the Nocturne remaster when it releases in English. Though, I've heard it's not that great of a remaster after the Japanese release, so I'll wait and see

great video! like you, JRPGs have never really interested me because i found that the combat can be slow at times but I recently played Persona 5 Royal and really love that game. I am really interested in trying Persona 4 Golden on Vita so I was very happy to find your video. One hesitation that I have for going back was that it the game interface might feel dated after playing the newest game... Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I started playing the original Persona 4 (on the PS2), and it felt pretty dated to me. But Golden has better menus and quality of life changes, so it wasn't that archaic. One thing I missed from P5 though was that I couldn't preview which social links--same thing as confidants but with a different name--were in which location, but there aren't anywhere near as many locations as in P5, so you'll remember where the social links are. One other thing I think you should know for Golden that P5 doesn't have is this: you cannot hang out with any social link on rainy days. P5 doesn't have this and it really screwed me over for a while cause I would leave the house and not be able to go back inside unless I wanted to waste a time slot. Again, if you play Golden, it shouldn't feel too archaic compared to P5, but just make sure to change the battle commands to "control character" each time you get a new party member 'cause the game automatically sets it to auto battle when someone joins your party.

Personally Persona 4 golden is my favorite game of all time followed by Persona 3 with Persona 5 not making it into my top 10. I just think Persona 5 has much weaker characters and story then 3 and 4 still a great game thought and love the video.

(Persona 4's main cast of characters is still better than the main cast of P5 though. I can agree on that.)

You say you don't like the "power of friendship" trope but p4 has the most power of friendship bs out of all the Megami Tensei games
But at least it's consistent and tied to the Persona lore. What really rubs me (and I suppose the guy who made this video) the wrong way is when, all of a sudden, because reasons, you defeat the enemy because of friendship. At least in P4 (and frankly in neo-Persona games in general) the idea of friendship is a consistent theme, and in P4 in particular bonds are framed as the "lenses to see the truth", and izanami is the embodiement of lies and deception, so ehh it checks out.
I do think that that specific segment didn't age that well, but I dunno at least it fit with the themes of the game unlike god knows how many japanese media where friendship only makes the mc want to win more and THAT is what decides the battle.

@@Cinnacal I think the P5 party member confidants has some standouts like Akechi and Kasumi but has some boring ones like Makoto while the p4 crew are just good overall, I think the biggest problem in P4 was that most s links were slow and took until like rank 5 or 7 to get good.

Too dramatic change, would be a Remake. P4G is an enhanced version of P4, so it still has that P2 graphics. But that's always the issue of playing, retro games, they still have the graphics they did back then, until a remake is made.
I never played Persona 4, but I did see videos of it and I absolutely hated it. To me the game was so bad it made me root for the villain or made me want to be one.
The combat was okay, not as good as Persona 5 but it wasn't anyone's fault
The only links I liked was Kanji and Ai because I liked their character development, Ayane, Ai and Yumi are also my favorite characters
The biggest issue I had with this game is the characters in the game, to me everyone is an asshole. The whole conformity in the social links I didn't care for. The way the MC was an uncaring jerk when someone is in pain. Everything about Operation babewatch 2.0. The girls abuse to the guys at the beginning of school, the campout, the Amagi inn was the last straw. Not to mention Morooka, the guy at the other line you get the phone number from the girl and Hanako make me act like Uncle Ruckus possessed.
I can't play this game for I am afraid of what I'll be if I do. I'm scared of being a crappy person.
