Who would've thought that a ps3 game would run pretty well on the switch. It seriously baffels me that people legit thought that Persona 5 was too much for the switch to handle
@@HanataroKoji on switch you can even play the game without the fiends like you can on pc, plus those frame drops happen anytime you get a large encounter with many demons and also when fusing.
The Devil Survivor games I feel have some of the best rereleases in the series, meaningfully expanding on their base games without feeling intrusive. It also helps that you have the option to choose whether or not to engage with the extra content.
If I'm not mistaken you don't absolutely have to engage with the extra content in P3P, P4G and P5R either. Like in P3P, the female campaign is entirely separate, in P4G just don't interact with Marie as much as possible, and in P5 don't interact with Yoshizawa and/or Maruki.
Yeah I liked that Devil Survivor Overclocked gave you a choice whether or not to do the newly added 8th day content, like choose for Yuzu's route to end with how selfish decision ended up putting all of Tokyo in danger, or do the new route and try to fix everything. likewise for Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker making the Trigulum arc seperated from the main story
@@toddhowze7273 Persona 4 Golden has an insane amount of new cutscenes even without Maria. It negatively affects the pace in an already mammoth game. Also, with all the new Personas in Aeon and Joker archetypes, you'd be missing out on combat options, and ignoring them would leave you without much use for all the extra days and activities added in.
For people who are playing digital devil saga on the ps3 you can fix the performance issue by holding left dpad, square, L1 and R1 in the menu for 10 seconds then press start to open a secret menu. Once it's open you will see a menu called Configuration just open it and disable v-sync and it will run normally
@@eternalinnocent9506 I'm pretty sure DD2 works fine from what I've searched but this seems to work for all megaten games on the ps3 like Raidou Kuzunoha games
While it’s great to have a remaster rerelease for many of these games I find it troubling that they don’t allow us to have simple access to the older versions. In situations like P5R and Devil Survivor Overclocked the rerelease is better in nearly every conceivable way, but you’ll have something like Nocturne or Redux. You mentioned fan translations and I’m very glad that these exist, especially in the case of Eternal Punishment’s PSP port. One example of a port that excels beyond the original but unfortunately we had to rely on fans and not Atlus themselves lol. Side note, why can’t I upgrade to the PS5 version of P5R 😭 Atlus you are so evil
honestly i hate that people are forced to double dip for the royal content. they could have easly retooled it into a big expansion instead. p4 golden as well as the p3 versions at least make sense from a technical standpoint.(being on different plattforms, etc) but p5 and p5 royal already were on the same system. just slap it onto a new game+ and all is good. i hate in general how everything has to try to be this big revenue stream now. pointless dlc: like locking already completed content behind day 1 dlc that could have been easly release with the game. what's the point of not letting all of your customers fusion into mara or other demons in soul hackers 2? or the dumb exp, gold booster dlc stuff for smtV?(also the demi fiend stuff could have been a really cool and cute way to honor nocturne instead of just being this obvious attempt at milking more cash from people that lack self control.) constant milking of any game that made a big splash as well as the suprise shown by higher ups when the dumb dancing spin-off doesn't ship as many copies as the main RPG title is also pretty stupid. god i hate their managment
@@FrancisYorkMorganFBI i really like the gameplay of persona dancing But holly fuck atlus a full price for a rhythmn game with like 40 songs I bought project diva from ps3 with the same number of songs for 20 reais But persona dancing 4 is super expensive for ps4 due to it not having its own disc Also the story of PD4/5 suck so hard
I think re release of P2EP is another good example of a port done well enough by Atlus, even though it wasn't officially localized. Unlike its predecessors the P1 re release which is as contentious as ever, and the the P2IS re release which dumbed down the difficulty to a hilarious degree, P2EPP struck a good balance. On top of that the addition of Tatsuya's Scenario fits into the game quite well and doesn't clash with the themes or the feeling over the story at all; and in fact adds onto it. I think had P2EPP been localized it would be viewed similarly to P5R as being a good re release of a game. Of course you can still look at the PSX version of EP as the best version and there is no doubt a charm to it but I don't believe the debate over which version of EP is definitive is as contentious as say the debates over P1, P2IS, and P3's different versions. The debate over P2EP is more subjective while there are more objective differences with the P1, P2IS, and P3 versions to be argued over.
Basically my exact thoughts, even if I don't really mind Innocent Sin PSP's difficulty. I've seen people argue over the comparisons between the PSX and PSP tracks from Persona 2, but I think you can't deny that they're mostly faithful and true to the original work, which is the main backlash I see over Persona 1 PSP. EP PSP also just objectively fixed a lot of issues from IS PSP, like the UI being unreadable sometimes (red text background looked weird, but was hard to read text during certain scenes), simpler combat, and better controls/options. Shame it wasn't officially translated, and it took a fan translation for that. Also, EP PSP introduced the best track to this entire series, Additional Boss Battle.
I agree with this. The only issue I have is we shouldn’t gotten this version earlier lol like 10 years earlier. I also think the Soul Hackers 3DS version is another re-release I don’t find any issues with. Although that’s probably because it doesn’t have any new story content unlike most of them though
When it comes to the Persona 2 games it’s clear what the definitive version for each one is. The original PlayStation version of Persona 2 Innocent Sin is the best version to play.(The system makes it clear it’s based around auto-battling and you can intervene at any time during battle. The menus are easier to navigate and just lets you directly choose a party member’s actions. While you could argue it’s not that much harder than the remaster and while I do agree I prefer easy over a dull and boring gameplay experience any day. There’s also no unnecessary censorship) The PSP Re-release of Eternal Punishment is the definitive way to play the game in my eyes. Adds the needed QOL improvements while also keeping true to the original source material and vision. It’s not reinterpretation of the game for modern persona fans; it’s simply a remake in the purest sense.(No censorship,no missing sound effects, keeping true to the combat system of the original game, and doesn’t reduce the difficulty.) The additional scenarios are completely detached from the main plot. It’s not like Persona 4 Golden or Strange Journey Redux where there are still scenes in the main plot where have to encounter with the new character/content. The new content is completely isolated from the rest of the game and you can choose whether or not to engage with it. As you mentioned, The PSOne version is still playable but the remaster is a improvement in almost every facet and is the ideal to play this amazing JRPG. For Persona 1, there’s currently a group reintranslating Revelations Persona as well as bringing back the SQQ which was previously inaccessible in that version. I say retranslate but they’re basically inserting the psp translation into the game. There’s also someone doing an all new translation for the Japanese PS1 version. It’s funny how the fanbase has done more with these games than the company has. The only issue I have with the ps1 version is the lack of QOL updates. The random encounters take forever due to how long and drawn out the animations are although I do like the sprite work. In dungeons you just walk rather than running like in the PSP version but all of this can be easily fixed by overclocking the game.
Certainly helps that they brought back the original writer for the game to write the new scenario to make sure it fit with the game. And fortunately, he hadn't lost his touch.
The issue with Persona 5 Royal having DLC Personas is that experiencing the game in a normal way is pretty annoying to do. The best example would be Orpheus. In the Fusion Menu, it's hard to tell if a Persona is a DLC Persona or not, but if you aren't constantly careful about this, you might end up with Neo Cadanza on Lv 13. A Skill that is both Dragon Hustle AND Mediarama for 24 SP.
A big missed opportunity with the Switch version was the possibility of Nintendo themed costumes; Joker and Ryuji looking like Mario and Luigi or Futaba looking like an Inkling would have been awesome.
SMT IV port would be greatly appreciated, though I think my number one concern is whether or not they'd modify the Smirk and Partner systems to be more like Apocalypse's. On the one hand, I think it would just lead to an objectively better gameplay experience to remove the major issues Smirk had in IV and guarantee that Walter won't Agi the Minotaur. On the other hand, I'm worried that taking elements of Apocalypse opens the floodgates for them to change all sorts of things, including the aforementioned issue of shoehorning in new characters for the story and post-humorously invalidating the endings of the original. Would the way St works be changed? Would spells get to crit as well now? What happens to all of the demon designs from the original's guest-artists? It's a whole can of worms of QoL vs respecting design-intention. Still, if it means the DLC bosses of the original are actually worked into the game instead of leaving major story-events and end-game challenges behind a pay-wall, that would go a long way in making the game feel complete in a newly accessible state.
i would 100% invite the 4A smirk rework because that mechanic genuinely ruined 4 for me. honestly it is really funny that 4 introduced a cool mechanic that was executed poorly, only to be revised perfectly in the followup. ...only for them to do the same in SMT5 lol. am i really gonna have to wait for a new title for the magatsuhi gauge to not be poorly executed garbage?
even worse is that the DLC of IV is not available on some countries for whatever reason (can't even buy it here in Brazil) so some people wont even get to see those events
It's worth mentioning that, in some countries such as chile, these ports usually come at a lower price on digital stores such as steam or the eshop, due to regional pricing
wo wait i thought that was basic that any game on steam is always cheaper. i filipino and i never buy games on ps store or Nintendo switch store because it is in dollars, it will be cheaper to by physical copy, but better yet, steam. u tellin me everyone buys games for like 20$ all the time 😭😭😭
@@missasyan again, it depends on your region, it's cheaper for people like me who live in latam, bc sega knows we are poor as hell so they lower their prices for us lmao, but physical games are still expensive as hell
I'm not that acquainted with persona games yet, but I think some of the better Atlus rereleases are the Etrian Odyssey Untold games where they give You the option to play the classic Game or the new version with some story and predefined characters
The Etrian Odyssey Untold remakes still change a ton though, playing in classic mode is not even close to the same as the original game - class skill sets are entirely different, the dungeon maps and enemies are very different, items and balance are greatly modified. It's nice that they let you opt out of the new story content if you want an experience closer to the original, but it's still very different.
on the switch, the 3d world is 720p but the ui and text is all 1080p, which makes the game look and feel a lot better. relative to most ports that go disastrous when it reaches switch, I do think its a good port. I actually think atlas overall did a good job with royal
I kinda feel like Persona 3 was going to be contentious no matter which version (FES or Portable) they chose to port. There are valid pros and cons to both versions of the game and I've long wished (however unlikely) that Atlus would release a true definitive edition, one that combines the visual style of FES with the quality of life improvements and FeMC route found within Portable.
i think the issue with p3fes is that the game's coding was an absolute mess. someone online talked about it, but that seems to be the main reason why that game wasnt ported. personally im fine with p3p since i really disliked the answer and loved the inclusion of a female protagonist
11:04 This is assuming a good faith I don't extend to ATLUS rereleases. Sometimes the old staff isn't even there. When they are, it's hard to understand their involvement; seems to me they shove em in an advisory role with no real authority for press releases and interviews. And notice there's often a YOUNG, SEXY, FEMALE character added for the EXTRA DOUBLE PLUS true ending? And many of the added scenes are wish fulfillment, wiki-filling lore dumps, or anime hijinks? They don't give a single shit about the original vision there. They just want new vectors for merch and further brand commitment.
WTF? So basically the old staff has no say in what goes in a re-release while these Super Horny Upstarts do whatever the hell want without any supervision whatsoever??? Wow...
Or the entire visual style gets lost for the cute Moe style... Radiant Historia was a crime for sure with how they botchered the entire game's atmosphere for cutesy generic style.
@@cactusalucano4013 What? I loved the radiant historia port on 3DS. That game is far from moe lol even the 3DS version. The voice acting adds so much charm and personality to the characters and the game is still as dark as always. Just because the art isn't grungy and low res like it's Vagrant Story doesn't mean it's moe lmao. If any series Atlus has made is moe it's etrian odyssey where every character is either a shota or a loli no exceptions and that series is beloved even tho the main artist is a confirmed lolicon and butchered every character he did art for in Fire Emblem Heroes. I'd definitely be down to see more videos like this one. Your current content is great but the nature of these analysis videos means sometimes I can't watch the entire thing because of spoilers and stuff. So basically these may appeal to more people and the variety is pretty cool. Also yes cover sonic frontiers (unbiased opinion)
I'd like to say that while these 15 minute videos ARE good, solid content that I would hate to see your content boil down to only that. It is impossible to cover a complex topic in depth in 15 minutes and I'd hate to see the analysis get boiled down.
Devil survivor overclocked has really good new story content, seeing the actual consequences of your actions and the new days play after seeing the original endings so you don’t really miss out on the original content either, I haven’t played naoto’s route but I thought amanes 8th day was great. I haven’t ds 2’s Triangulum arc though, only the main campaign for record breaker, but you don’t miss out on anything the original had, and you even get voice acting. But also for p4g, while I haven’t played vanilla p4, i don’t mind the new scenes at all since I think they’re harmless, even Marie, I didn’t do her content on my first play-through and while I don’t like her I just think she’s just there. Like she doesn’t make me think anything different for the story. When it comes to the new scenes like the concert and beach, I didn’t know they were new at the time and they’re kind of just apart of persona 4 to me. Still I kind of get what you mean about the original experiences being lost in these versions. I like to recommend p3 fes first since I think you miss a ton of details in portable. With that said I think the rereleases can offer a new experience that feels similar enough to the original while still being unique. I’ve also only played strange journey redux, and while I haven’t played the new story content, but I still felt very engaged while just going for the original neutral ending. But it’s the one game where I want to at least try the original, probably after my current playthrough of redux since I at least want to see the new content first. I hope what I’m saying makes sense. I know it’s a little rambly, but from what I can tell for the most part the new content is either decent or harmless, at least from my perspective.
Worth remembering that P3 FES was itself an enhanced rerelease of the original P3, and I don't think anyone will argue that there's any reason to ever play P3 instead of it. If only all of their rereleases could be so unambiguously better.
I hope more Persona new releases and/or re-releases have as much style in art design, music, battle mechanics, and meaningful dialogue options. It was an exciting game to explore each new area that opened and fight in. The life sim elements were anxiety inducing, never imagined forgetting to buy soda would make me restart an hour of playtime....The character development unfolding to each phantom thief and Joker and Maruki being foils to each other were brilliant. I'm such a fan of the voice acting and work behind Maruki's pivotal role in the story. His therapy sessions were profound and grounded and put a spotlight on working thru personal struggles to be better versions of themselves(phantom thieves). I only hope what comes after will have quality and attention to detail.🎉
Okay I gotta admit, if you really actually felt that much anxiety because of the life sim stuff, you need to take a deep breath and really think about what you're doing. The game isn't that hard if you're just playing it normally (no challenge runs or whatever), you can screw up basically everything and still beat it. In fact I'd be willing to bet it's perfectly possible and not really even super hard to beat the entire game without ranking up any confidant that isn't forcibly raised by story events.
The persona 5 royal ports are for new players not for people who already played the game. I understand what you mean on the second half of the video though.
I think it’s not unreasonable to say the switch and PC releases could each be considered better play conditions than the PS or X box releases The customisation and graphical capabilities on PC make it great for people who love that stuff abd the handheld function along makes the switch an excellent idea especially for RPG’s where you can just pick up and grind on the bus or the loo Not like it needs Nintendo’s shitty online to actually function
Worth noting P4AU's problems were because it was too faithful to the original PS3/360 versions, rather than anything they did to fuck it up further. The game at this point has gotten its promised rollback netcode update and is fine in terms of overall player activity. While it's unfortunate that the game at launch wasn't as good as it could have been and it took people practically demanding Atlus implement better netcode for it to happen (and not even at launch), at this point I'm just happy it's playable with good netcode at all, especially since interest in the game competitively is the highest it has been in years.
As a nice bonus to this video atlus also made a very mixed rerelease of Radiant Historia, where they redesigned Eluca for no reason and added new content in which they ensured a happy ending for everyone… including people who absolutely did not deserve it. So yeah, devil survivor games are only bright exceptions so far
As a Tokyo Mirage Sessions fan, lol we got some sort of best case scenario. Though Royal is the best when it comes to content and remaking the gameplay. Persona 3 Portable should be the version that should be remade with tweaks like having the stamina system actually matter.
I'd really like to know what do you mean exactly with "changes and additions added to SJ Redux" since you call those bad while not specifying. I played both OG Strange Journey and Redux and while Alex is an awful character who does almost nothing and most of her interactions are on the womb of grief (which is a garbage dungeon that doesn't understand why the original dungeons were good in the first place, and thought that adding huge rooms with a thousand teleporters and moving floor was the best idea. Only saving grace were the bosses) Redux was the first game where I got chaos (the new one) on my first playthrough it felt great and it was the first time I agreed with chaos, instead of the vague endings the original had, the new sub-apps are great for veterans and newcomers alike, Omen Bug, Doctor Magus and even Marco Polo although I feel like Eridanus is best played without knowing where the hidden gats are and using crab walk instead. Also Shekinah is a thousand times better than Mem Aleph, she's harder, her battle makes you use items a lot, use commander skills and constantly switch demons to defeat her while her second rewards using Demon-Coop a lot. In the original SJ we have Mem Aleph making you grind 15 levels just to get a team that can survive the first turn, which is once again easier on Redux even without DLC, also being able to switch Sub-Apps anytime instead of going to a terminal and not being locked to to just 10 for the entire game feels great
@@tomatopawah6877 You're not listening. Redux Is very Anti SMT mind you it doesn't have to be that way. You can ignore Atlus's BS and pretend the new content doesn't exist. (Well even that Is impossible) And just go for the original endings.
I think exactly the same. The game remains almost the same if not for the three or four encounters you have with Alex in the story, and even when she appears I can totally see that they are not part of the main story. The extra dungeon it's true that it doesn't have the charm of the ones of the main game but I can see that each floor has a main theme, and if you not like the dungeon is complety optional, but it gave me a purpose when I encoutered a hard boss like Ouroboros, so instead of grinding for levels I went there. I don't see why original SJ could be the best version if you don't explain why.
To be honest, I think I agree with a lot of your points though there are a few things worth noting. Firstly, Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 were made in render engine which if they wanted to remaster and re-release those games they'd have to give EA a 15% cut of the profits on top of the cut they have to give the Digital Storefront they're releasing and there's no real reason to do that. On the topic of the quality of those remasters you're right it's a mixed bag in Persona 3's case we have 2 different versions of the game that if combined probably would be the best version but FES is boggled down by restrictive gameplay mechanics and Portable suffers from the less immersive design of the VN novel style at this stage only a remake could really fix both. In Persona 4's case though, no, not even close Golden is the better version of the game I get the intent of Marie was to essentially add to the lore of P4's extremely underwhelming end bosses who were completely overshadowed by the main characters in the story thanks to their total lack of presence though I will admit if Marie had more story presence outside of her social link she'd probably be one of the best characters in the game. In regards to Persona 4 Arena and Ultimax, this game int a major problem you can't introduce a concept like Persona Avengers and then completely ignore the Phantom Thieves, Psychotic Breakdowns, Mental Shutdowns & Changes of Heart nationwide without making the cast of P3 and P4 look either excessively apathetic or incompetent. P5 kind of highlights that "living your life as best you can" doesn't do shit when God's like Yaldabaoth and EMMA can rise through the cracks and gain control of the masses on such a large scale. And don't get even get me started on the fact they left Sho on the loose for no real reason. Frankly I don't care if the game has good action based gameplay, it's a Persona game and the story is what needs to deliver. As for Persona 5 Royal PC, while it is the definitive version of the game I honestly wouldn't recommend for those double dipping right away, simply for the fact that you got your copy for free, and Persona 5 Royal has a habit of getting discounted fairly frequently on PS4 and without the physical memorabillia I don't see any reason you'd be incentivised to pay full price for it unless your playing it for the first time.
@@PinClockFuntime Understandable bud, I adore both games but the reason FES seems to have been shafted, would you believe isn't the game itself but our old friends at EA. FES was made using renderware and remastering it effectively means having to lease that engine again and giving them a 15% cut of the sales which is such a significant chunk when you consider every storefront also gets a cut of the sales on their respective platforms as well. That's why P3/P4 were remade on a new engine. Hopefully one day we will get an actual remake which does justice to both games while making FES's battle completely optional. Give me that, the answer and FeMC and we're good to go.
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective They have gone towards Unity for their latest games. Nocturne HD and Soul Hackers 2 are both made using Unity. They could just migrate FES to Unity like what they did with Nocturne.
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective Couldn't they just use a Unity wrapper like Nocturne and call it a day? Rockstar did that with the DE of their trilogy, that turned out horribly but it's widely known why.
The funny thing is, Nocturne is actually a re-release of the original SMT3. Labyrinth of Amala and the entire thing it brought is actually a new content, and is the reason why TDE feels out of place compared to other more philosophically-inclined routes of the original.
Yep, but since the original Nocturne version was never released in the west before this, people act like the Maniacs version is the original and complain that they don't get Dante for free. Even when they get Kuzunoha for free, who we never got before. I would argue against TDE feeling out of place though, it's a logical alternative to refuse what the world presents you with and gives you a good amount of contextual information to help you understand what is actually happening. You learn what the conception is, and decide to go against it. It's different from the other routes definitely, but I don't think it doesn't fit into the game thematically. What I don't like is how a large part of the fanbase treat it as a "true" ending instead of one valid route among many, but that's not really its fault.
Honestly, with future rereleases, they should make a mode that lets them switch between vanilla and the new content, like how XCOM lets you toggle between the vanilla and 'new' versions (Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within, for instance, or Vanilla XCOM 2 and War of the Chosen).
Why? The thing Nam didn't mention is the new content for the most part is entirely optional within the story. If you don't like the new, just don't engage with it. Persona 3 FES/Portable is a different story for so many reasons obviously but I don't see the point to be honest.
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective I mean... you kinda still get it shoved into the story and you have to deal with it on SOME level. Also, different palace designs for Persona 5, as well as altered boss fights, you HAVE to engage with new content.
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective You clearly don't know wtf you're talking about here. The only optional within the story would be P3 FES because The Answer was entirely separate mode than the base game. Marie and Kasumi aren't even optional for P4 Golden and P5 Royal.
The reason why SMT Nocturne feels different on PC has more to do with the era it released in. At the time SMT Nocturne released Japan had a culture around deleting source codes after the game shipped to prevent industrial espionage. (Employees just taking the source code and giving it to a rival company). This is why a lot of games from this era when they get re-released it turns out their engine had to get completely replaced. Final Fantasy 7 and 8 avoided this because they were ported to PC by Eidos in the 1990s, but Final Fantasy 9 had to be remade in Unity. SMT Nocturne is no different as it had to be ported to Unity. Persona 4 Golden meanwhile was on the PS Vita which ran an ARM CPU. Which is much more well understood and was a more modern system so it most likely didn't take that long to port to PC. There are also other considerations made in this respect that make porting to a new engine the only option. Since the architecture the game was developed for was distinct. Like when Final Fantasy 7 was ported to PC by Eidos in the 1990s they ran into an issue that the way the game processed sound and switched between battles and the overworld straight up didn't work on PC. As the original FF7 programmers developed the game around the PS1's hardware and built something like 7 distinct game engines for the battle screen, overworld, the various minigames etc. Which all had to be merged into 1 when it was ported to PC. The PS2 had a hard to emulate RISC CPU in it. So if the game was developed that far back it's very likely it would take years longer to port the original build compared to just remaking in Unity. And in terms of budget it's either "Unity port or nothing" since you don't get to just waste that much money just in payroll on employees just to make the game slightly more faithful for returning players. This isn't an issue specific to Atlus. This is an issue with an enormous amount of Japanese games from this era and why they either don't come to newer platforms at all, come as just emulated versions or have setbacks. The developers of the Silent Hill 2/3 HD versions ran into the issue that Konami didn't even keep the source code to either game's final build. They had to work off of a beta build and Konami wasn't willing to give them more development time to fix all of the bugs. So on-top of porting the game to newer hardware they had to fix bugs that were already fixed by the original developers. Western developers historically tended to save source code better since culturally they had a culture around licensing technology to competitors and outsourcing development to other studios. So it was just handy to save copies. They also had the benefit of building a lot of their games for PC. And coincidentally all of the modern consoles run x86 processors. So it just works better in their favor when they release a remaster.
@@rockapartie It wasn't just that it was also developers at this time in Japan rarely distinguished the game engine from game logic. The US had a culture of licensing tech to devs. Like a lot of devs licensed the Quake engine from Id Software despite being direct competitors. Whereas in Japan that wasn't much of a thing. Because of this a lot of the time they would just build the new game on-top of the old game. You can especially see it if you look internally as you'll often see things like assets or code left in from an older project. Western developers did also lose source code but it was mostly by accident. Like Bethesda infamously lost the source code to Daggerfall for 2 reasons. 1. They changed offices between Daggerfall and Morrowind's development. And 2. Morrowind's development was such a huge clusterfuck that devs kept leaving the project so nobody kept track of old files like that. A lot of the time with western developers they do keep the source code but it ends up being unusable anyway. Like Naughty Dog actually kept the source code to Crash Bandicoot but the team behind the remake didn't use it because it was all in assembly code and would've taken way too long to work with.
I’m genuinely curious why strange Journey Redux is disliked. It was one of the first SMT games, and I thought it was great. The updates graphics made it a lot more appealing to play and the voice acting added made it seem a lot higher budget than the orignal. I thought the added content was fine in the game as well. Alex being a fun rival character and the womb of grief being a nice chill area to grind made the game a lot more enjoyable. It was nice to take a break from the story and explore the womb of griefs B plot, especially when your stuck in difficult sectors like E.
IMO womb of grief is WAY harder and more annoying to traverse than any sector from the original game including Sectors E and G. You calling it a "fun chill place to grind" is vastly unselling how hellish that dungeon is to traverse. Floors 1 and 6 are piss easy and floors 2 and 3 are a bit annoying, but floor 5 can kiss my ass. Literally had to use a step by step guide on that one, not even joking. It's the one with the flower teleport maze btw. The worst part is that this gimmick is reused in the true final dungeon but somehow even worse and it makes me cry every time I try to play it.
I felt the same way about it beside your womb of grief being chill comment. I only played redux and I had a fantastic time and never really felt a tonal change going through the content.
I would like to note that some of the re-releases that seem to be best-liked by the community do, in my opinion, also deviate substantially from the original creative vision for their respective games. For example, I do not consider the new villain of P5R to be in line with the main theme grouping the original villains, that being "powerful men who are held above consequences by society". That isn't to say that the new villain doesn't challenge the Phantom Thieves in a very good and fitting way. However, the game does become significantly less politically charged in the new final arc, as the new villain's plan is more philosophically challenging. Similarly, Devil Survivor Overclocked Day 8 content deviates pretty sharply from the set-ups of each route's Day 7 ending, which is particularly notable since you actually must view the Day 7 endings before proceeding to override them on Day 8. Of particular note is Naoya's route, which basically removes all ambiguity from the character and all negative consequences from picking his route. Just about the only bit of story content in Royal where you can't tell "yeah, this is new" without really knowing the original game is the Akechi confidant chain. Meanwhile, the new Phantom Thief is integrated with next to no subtlety, to the point of shoving her into the opening sequence for what is ultimately no real reason other than to show her off. I can't say that Atlus really handled it that diffirently with these cases. They just succeeded in these few instances while failing in many others.
I've always liked the additional content. When I was a kid I was upset with them but... I came to enjoy the added elements. If you don't like them, also, you can just ignore them. SMT 3's re-release cycle added in the Kalpas and TDE, the ending most fans tend to favor over the rest. Atlus has always made it accommodating to ignore these things if you do not want them while allowing the people who do to enjoy them. I think its best to remember the additional content is always made with an intent and a focus, they don't add it unless they have a reason. You can think that reason is un-needed or pointless, but I do think it is important to meet the creators on their terms and try to see what they were trying to say by adding in the new content.
I completely agree with your thoughts on this I was suprirsed that P3P was the announced release when P3FES is soo much better P3FES brough me into the SMT/Persona series and seeing p4 golden release made my day since it was a Vita exclusive. But aside from that so many people that were introduced to Persona with P5 or P5R who are learning about these magnicficant stories and games should be exposed to the best versions I know ATLUS will still make bank either off the nostalgia or curiosity but it would be nice to see them use the popularity of 5 to get a whole new generation not only playing the best of the old but ready to invest in all the new they have to offer...espeically with how long we normally have to wait for new numbered series releases...I am new to the channel here but definatley earned a sub from me with this honest look on the new releases
Hopefully Atlus will combine the best aspects of each versions in this P3P port, like party control and female protagonist from the P3P and cinematics and graphics from P3FES.
I just want to say, I figure you probably didn't want to get into the topic of mods on this video, but the only reason I'm considering picking up P3P and P5R is for the modding potential on PC. Seeing what they've been able to do with P4G makes me pretty sure that the PC releases are gonna be well worth the money once the modders have had some time with them. P4G, in just a little over two years since the PC release, has seen so much love in the modding scene. There's mods that cover just about anything you might want to change: graphics, music, bug fixes, quality of life upgrades, expanded content (ports of Persona/Demon models from other games to be used as additional Personas), reworked difficulty, big total mechanical overhauls that give you basically an entirely new take on a Persona-style combat system, and a crapton of meme mods. You can fine-tune and hone in on the experience you want from any given playthrough, making the game infinitely more replayable than before. If nothing else, even people who want as unmodded an experience as possible would still benefit from bug fixes and maybe graphics mods. P5R's only been out barely over a week and already has over 50 mods on gamebanana. Mostly texture, model, and music swaps, but some gameplay things as well, including rebalancing the DLC Personas to make them less ridiculous, and allowing you to choose which parts of the DLC box you want to redeem (or taking either the DLC Personas and/or the DLC box away entirely if you'd rather). Also some minor QoL tweaks like being able to save anywhere. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before the Raidou DLC gets packed in a mod, if it hasn't been already, as well as probably eventually being able to do something about Denuvo, and at that point, with a mod or three, P5R on PC *is* the definitive version. And that doesn't get into what the modding scene is going to look like in two years, after having allowed the time for some bigger mod projects to be completed. P3P? Already has mods for the PSP version: you can port over the higher quality FES models, add back in the missing cutscenes, backport the portrait bustups from P4AU, there's a work in progress to port in the P3D models. And there's even been some rough test work done on bringing back the 3D environments, there's videos of both the school entrance and Paulownia Mall in a buggy, but roam-able state (including interacting with a store in the mall). And that's all made for the PSP version, even if emulated it's still probably limited in potential. I'd expect the upcoming Steam release to be easier to design mods for, and it's not ridiculous to imagine a time in a few years when you can mod the PC release of P3P and functionally turn it into FES, with full 3D, all cutscenes, and The Answer, but with FeMC and full party control too. In other words, the most ideal definitive version a fan could ask for. And then you can go on to replace Koromaru with the shrine fox from P4 because somebody will certainly have decided to make that mod and it sounds like a good goofy time. Or make all the characters wear "Get Smoked" hats. Whatever, go wild. tl;dr: Mods are awesome, and the PC versions are worth a rebuy for that alone. Might take some time, but they'll get there.
The forced cheating DLC situation in this version of P5R is so so so so bad. Click on that box even once and your save is basically ruined with cheats everywhere (after spending about a week clicking "ok" of course, thought I was button mashing in a mario party minigame!). The fact that they advertise this as a selling point is mind blowing to me... surely most people think this stuff is garbage and ruins the game right? Why do they force it on you?
I think what's most frustrating to me about Atlus re-releases is that I can't even say Royal is the "one good one". For me, it falls into the EXACT same issues and that Golden, Full-body, and Redux has. All the issues you summed up about re-releases is exactly how I feel about Royal too. I WANT to like the most widely available version of P5, I WISH I could ignore how immersion breaking some the new content is to the game's original themes. All is this is to say that despite everything, Atlus has done the same problem over and over again. And if Royal is the new standard, I don't think that will ever change.
As someone that loved P5 Vanilla, Royal straight made me question if I even liked P5, bacause as much as I had to say about multiple parts of Vanilla, especially storywise, I still throughly enjoyed my way through it and only enjoy it more and more with each replay. But I was not enjoying Royal, it did not even feel like the same game as Vanilla, which as much as Golden messed up the story with Marie and combat balancing, it still felt like P4 just with a bunch of pointless extra stuff. I is very dissapointing that the version of P5 I like it's probably going to rot on the PS3 and PS4 just like FES does on the PS2
I don't think it's that bad. At the very least, for Strange Journey, it's the additions in Redux/Deep that got me interested in playing it. I find the New Law route to be fascinating and probably the only time I lean towards Law instead of Neutral or 'True Chaos'. Nocturne isn't a bad compromise, as a lot of the additions are behind DLCs, though I do admit I haven't played the remake since I'm still waiting for it to get cracked as those regional pricing is painful. Honestly, finding ROMs are annoying, so as long as they brought the games to PC, I think it's good.
Great video. I'm one of the people who shares the view that the Ps2 version of P3 is superior, at least tonally because of its setup. I'm surprised you didn't include the rumor of the P3 remake on the P5 engine. Whilst this just a rumor at this point, this version could go a long way to Atlus finally having a 'definitive' version of the game. Of course, as your video points out, not every re release is as good as the sum of its parts..
Gonna add, I hope that rumor is confirmed true, and that it includes everything. Female protagonist, FES content and a few QoL improvements to balance things out. I even know what it should be called, Persona 3 Ultimate.
I know people gona mention, but Devil Survivor games have the best re-releases. They add enough to justify the price while not getting in the way , ie making the games easier or adding anything to the main story. All extra content is optional and all the quality of life changes are straight upgrades. Tldr; devil survivor 1 and 2 are goated.
Tbh I think the 8th day is kinda balls because of how unique it makes each route ...while at the same time not offering a way to quicken the process of acquiring all the endings It's cool that they're more unique now, but it also means that you *are* missing a substantial bit of content if you only play through the game once and don't slog through the game 4 more times to see all of the 8th day content
@@Pie_The_Man You could make a save at end of the 6th day and use to beat all other endings. You wouldn't get 100% completion in the actual game but you would able to play all of them.
@@alsaiduq4363 thas fair but also that requires playing with a guide, so, unless you do that on your first playthrough you have to slog through the game at least once in order to get all the route exclusive content
@@toddhowze7273 P4G and P5R you still have the extra characters during maim story. Also in P5R, the game is extremly easier than vanilla because of the changes
Strange Journey Redux dont suck, because you can dissable Redux changes in gameplay / additional content and play like in original Strange Journey. Atlus give player CHOOSE. The only one downgrade is diffirent artstyle. The worst Atlus rerelease (aside of Persona 3) is probably SMT Devil Summoner 1995 on PSP, and Persona 1 on PSP. In Devil Dummoner 1995 on PSP they RUINED quality of soundtrack, and in Persona 1 Shoji Meguro dont respected Hidehito Aoki, removed all his music and replaced own music. Even worse Atlus dont added option to switch between Hidehito Aoki OST and new Shoji Meguro OST. The best rerelease from Atlus is propably SMT Devil Summoner Soul Hackers on 3DS.
this. i dont know what he was shitting on Strange Journey for. its seemed really out of spite. the Alexandra bit is all side story which is entirely optional and the OG 3 alignment endings are all in Redux. kinda dumb there.
I honestly don't really see the point in having a higher frame rate for P5 or turnbased rpgs in general. Like I don't really care that much since any sort of input delay won't really matter much in the end.
You keep saying the enhanced versions are worse, but never give any specific examples - especially when saying the new content changes themes. You don't have to go deep into spoiler territory (although for older games, I don't think that's much of an issue), but you need to explain WHY the new versions are worse.
It’s an especially weird complaint when some editions, like Golden and FES, just add content to their respective games without really changing the themes/story of the base game. Royal added to and modified the base game of P5 but I also think it was for the better. Even stuff like the Overclocked versions of Devil Survivors are largely considering the definitive releases. Anyone can of course prefer the original versions but I think it’d be weird to say they are worse than the originals. The megaten fanbase just seems to have a lot of cynical people within it for some reason.
@@NoonDragoon FES added content post-main game so that it's easier to play without going through the entire game just to experience it. Golden and Royal on the other hand, a shitty implementation of the add-on content where you ARE FORCED to play the main game just to experience the new content. All the modifications could've easily implemented in the vanilla game as well. They purposely do this shit just so they can resell the game again with a full price. It's a shitty business practice and anti-consumer. This has nothing to do with megaten fanbase. It's more about morons who are blinded by this shit and just consume the product without question.
Devil Survivor and Radiant Historia have "definitive versions" that change the art, the music and the story. Everyone that plays a game doesn't want to be forced to listen to voice acting. Especially poor voice acting, tho different people have different opinions on whether english voice acting is quality or not. In Radiant Historia for the 3DS, you have the option of the old art style. Pay Atlus and you can have an art style with character. At the end of the day, you can prefer a more generic anime style art to the original's deliberate style. But forcing a customer to pay extra for less is not cool. That's without adding in the new ending that changes the story themes for the worse. I played P4G but not P4, but it is pretty obvious how the new stuff is jammed on top of the old. With P4G and P5, the game clearly lets you know that you "failed" if you don't follow the new storylines to their new endings. A bad ending is hardly "choosing" when it comes to control of a games story. Most people will want the best ending in a Persona game and thus they have to engage with the new content. Cut rate Cloud and a "madman" who never actually did anything wrong are hardly improvements to the story. Admittedly P5R has the best combat the Persona games have ever seen and most of the new content ranges from excellent to acceptable. The pros outweigh the cons, so while I personally think P5 is a better way to get into Persona than P5R, everyone getting access to the best combat and quality of life improvements Atlus have ever done is a positive thing for everyone.
Another way to look at it is that Atlus has always been about cynicism. From the books with SMT up to how P5's story shakes out, cynicism is THE Atlus experience. These remakes that change the story and make it all nice go against what Atlus is about. It's not just about old fans preferring their old stories. It's about fighting to preserve what Atlus stands for.
I think you should give the Persona 4 Golden PC Port some credit, it's a pretty solid port in my opinion, I put 120 hours on it and I plan on putting more. Now I don't know anything about P5R's PC port since I already have the PS4 version and yeah it's kind of a bummer for me to know there's a better version of P5R that plays at 60 FPS and has all DLC, while I am stuck playing the PS4 version that unnecessarily plays at 30 FPS that I got from the limited edition that didn't come with any of the DLC. Atlus is doing the people that bought the game's original release wrong.
In terms of the Steam Deck users, gotta say. I got this game fully maxed out at a stable 50FPS lock, still looks way smoother than original P5R on PS4.
I have a Xbox series S and a Nintendo switch lite and even though I know almost everything about the franchise I never actually had a persona game besides strikers on switch. so do you suggest I buy a handheld pc for these games?
You also can't transfer your save data to the ps5 version, so we'd have to start from the beginning all over again. Rip to anyone who wanted to do their ng+ on the ps5 out the gate
@@ExtraordinaryFate thanks for your sacrifice bro, I'm definitely not waste my money, but is the 3rd semester unblocked or still unable to stream from the console ?
I think the re-releases adding content is good, I'd prefer an attempt to fix things rather than letting things be stagnant, because there is a chance things can be neutral or be better, it's rarely worse likr with strange journey redux, and even in that vase, the original always exists. Though I am just biding my time for a Persona 2 duology remake that will never come out, so y'know, my head is in the clouds.
I get why people are mad about the ports, but I genually appreciate their existance since my brother owns the original copy of Persona 5 Royal I played, and he doesn’t live with me anymore, so I haven’t physically been able to play the game for almost a year. So just having my own copy now is nice to have. Plus the p5r port runs fine. Haven’t encountered any issues with it on my end so far, so yeah.
I've heard that Persona 3 on ps2 had major coding issues that could make porting it to modern consoles difficult. Silent Hill HD collection had this problem too and those versions are so buggy. I think this was an article or some reports I saw someone posted on reddit. It's a legitimate issue that people are ignoring or just not understanding
Yeah most modders who worked with Person 3 FES will tell you that the code for it is just absolute trash but from what I seen of the persona 3 portable vs P3 and P3 fes steams from not knowing the code for the non portable version is dog shit or thinking just because a bunch of modders who are working in their spare time out of passion either for the game or just for coding and challenge somehow is the same as developers working for a publicly traded company should waste money, time and man power to fixing jank code from a decades old game just to satisfy a small group in the community instead of just porting over the non jank version. Because they don't have the first clue about business and how they are about making money at little cost.
A lot of bullshit excuse to justify their laziness. The only reason they chose to port over P3P because it's easier to port with little to no effort. What hilarious about that shit is that they purposely ignored P1 and P2 which are also on PSP.
That’s not what happened to Silent Hill HD. They just didn’t have the code for the final release versions of Silent Hill 2 and 3, so they released the unfinished versions, which of course were buggy as hell.
Actually no, FES does not have "awful code" and the many acusations of model duping and other stuff typical 6th gen stuff to save on loading times, which Portable and P4 also do
P5R runs phenomenally well on the Steamdeck, at a stable 60fps. I can even dock it with an external monitor and have the game run at 1080p, also at 60fps
Honestly, the reason why I replayed P5R is because I can play the game on my Steam Deck/GPD Win 3 on the go at 60fps. Also, thanks to Game Pass that I don't need to rebuy it again at a full price. Seriously though, why are they reselling this again for $60-70?
unless youre playing a physical copy that's been used for 5 years i dont see how a game's age should devalue it. its the same game. its worth is the same as it was then.
Redux is way better than SJ DS I don't care what anyone says. It improves the original design by a longshot and the new content makes the story better in all honesty. I get that people like the original, and hey, you can still 100% do that. I really hate how much people dog on it, it just... Seems like being way too nostalgic over the original.
Hmm, I didn't realize they weren't improving the portable version for the new hardware. Thanks for saving me some money. I'll just be getting the P4 then. I know there's a steam port, but all I have is a laptop. I just prefer my games on the TV running on hardware whose software I don't have to keep clean myself.
I still think persona 4 golden is the best re-release among persona games. The story is just so good. How the new velvet girl brings so much more to the table is amazing.
I like P4 vanilla better simply because Marie is nothing but a generic over the top Tsundere girl and the predetermined destiny thing sucks and I wish Atlus would stop doing that, it only worked with Ryoji and Aigis.
I loved maria's inclusion to the story. The whole thing was amazing. The entire ending felt more meaningful because of her. It brought more story elements and gameplay. Oh and the music for her dungeon was godly.
@@ExtraordinaryFate Lol for me it's the best cause it'd aditions are not poorly shoerhorned into the main story and as a side game and it keeps the escence of the original intact Unlike P4G or P5R which shoehorned their shit into the main, especially Royal changing the combat to the point it is not even the same combat system
I believe there is one remaster that a lot of people seem to overlook when discussing Atlus Remasters and it is Nocturne’s, not HD but Maniax. I get that most of the world only experienced Maniax however it is still a remaster that does many things that people dislike about other Atlus remasters like adding on content that wasn’t there and alters the perceptions of the og endings and adding a new dungeon. Also remember that the Old Man was not in the original and everything with him was new content. TDE alters the game by essentially implying that this is the definitive ending and the other endings are wrong. Freedom is now an incorrect ending which to me alters the original conceit of the game. I just find it interesting how Nocturne did alot of the things that people accuse modern remasters of doing yet people seem to turn a check when discussing. Perhaps the new content was implemented better on Nocturne, The Old Man is not nearly as bad as Alex, maybe people prefer the new ending, and Amal’s is an interesting dungeon. I just feel that Nocturne Maniax should be included in the discussion as it does do alot of the things games like Redux do. Another reason for this could also just be that most people only know about Maniax and not the vanilla Nocturne. I am curious on how people who started with vanilla Nocturne felt about Maniax if it was the preferred version or if it too spawned controversy on if it strayed too much from the original.
Catherine is in a weird state as well which is something that I at least like with them releasing Catherine Classic. Sure it's a bit weird to buy the older version but if I had the option to do the same with some of there other games, I'd do that in a heartbeat~
Plenty of updated or enhanced rereleases from other publishers allow you to turn on or off new content, so you can play the vanilla version as well. I wish Atlus would do this, it's even another selling point they can add.
Great video as always! I can’t wait to see what you say about Strange Journey. I played the Redux version and I thought it was a pretty solid game. I don’t know what your opinion on it is but I can’t wait to find out! You should review the Devil Survivor games. I heard Overclocked is really good but I have yet to play it. Good luck on your future projects!
I just ordered P5R for the PS5 yesterday and I can’t wait to replay it all over again. I first played the PS4 version last yr and got it at a pretty good price of $30 (I didn’t have a PS4 last gen) and this game FAAAAR exceeded my expectations to the point it’s my favorite game ever & I hated turn based games up to that point. My only issues with this now is Altus didnt allow people to upgrade to the PS5 version for those that had it on PS4 so you have to pay full price again AND you can’t transfer your PS4 data of the game to the PS5 version. Since I didn’t pay full price the first go around I didn’t mind paying it cause I full heartedly believe it’s worth that but I understand why others would feel some kind of way about that
Same I got vanilla through PS+ on PS5 and when I heard royal was getting out on switch it was an instant sell since having what’s essentially an upgraded version on the sand systems can render the original one obsolete but was still interested on royal (particularly since that’s what most people tend to talk about and I don’t want the spoilers so hit locked out if a large portion of the communutyv
@@luizkorynga portable is bad. I don't know why people like a visual novel game so much. "there are some improvements compared to P3FES", yes, those improvements like the use of the square button already existed in persona 4, they could just easily implement them to P3Fes, and along side The Answers, you could play the FeMC but thats too much work for Atlus, imagine having to rebuild a 3d game just to have a non-cannon female version of the main character, when you can just upscale all 2d images inside P3P and call it a remaster.
There is actually a QUICK fix to the game speed issue on ps3. Without needing hacks or 3rd party soft ware. Just turn off a specific setting in the games emulator debug menu
I haven't played the Persona series before but my friends are huge fans of it and really want me to play P5 I can't wait to try out Persona 5 on Switch, I really want to play it at school and I don't like being stuck to a TV lol, especially for long games.
Im just glad that the rereleases tend to port games that are more difficult to get to newer consoles. Sure, the coat of fresh paint usualy doesent add a whole lot in most cases but having old games just collect dust and be left alone in the dirt without new ways to get your hands on them is even more of a shame.
Video may be a year old but its still a good comment to make regarding the PC port. They still messed up a simple thing about FPS. The higher your FPS, the less vibrations the game will apply to a controller.
The female protag route in P3Portable was absolutely not poorly received. Also, I think this video ignores the fact these re-releases exist mostly to give the artists at Atlus something to do while their next game is in the planning and engine phase. Making new assets for these re-releases essentially employs a bunch of people who would otherwise be fired to ensure company profit.
P5R on Switch worked fantastically for me, and it looked pretty good too. Especially as I have really old PCs and P4G on my shitty laptop required really lowering the quality. And still had hiccups but honestly it's an 8 yo laptop not made for gaming so what was I expecting lol
Lol in the thumnail you put in nocturne, the game got full on voice acting, where before it was only tiny bits of voice acting. But hey you know the outrage reviews will get you the clicks.
I did originally want Atlus to port SMT: IV to give it a new life on a different platform but with the way they feel like they need to add some unnecessary change to it, I'm not to sure. Of course, please do, somehow, make it easy to play with one screen and not 2 like the 3ds but, other than that, I don't think it needs any serious story revisions. I say that, however, I do wish for Kaneko's full script for the game to be included. He practically wrote a novel for the game but didn't have the time to fulfill his dream entirely. That would be a nice addition.
I think SMT IV just needs a gameplay aproximation to IV: Apocalipse: skill afinity, smirk less unpredictable, companions with a better AI and late game being a challenge and not a megidola/phys AOE spam.
I tried the original P5 on my PS5 back in February when it was free to play for PS+ owners. I actually bought the P5R for PS4 because it was heavily discounted a few months later, but that 60FPS looks sweet. So I'll get it (again) for the PS5 lol
Just fundamentally can’t agree with this take and it seems like even in this video you’re contradicting yourself. As someone who wasn’t able to play these games before hand and doesn’t have the luxury of a good PC I was only able to play this stuff when they were rereleased. The QOL updates or additions to every modern Persona game make them better. And just because I don’t like Marie doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want them to make another Royal. And I don’t know what problems you had with Nocturne but I don’t think “bad lighting” should stop people like me from being able to become fans of the series.
If you hear one bad thing about a video game and don't want to try it that's a you problem (not u specifically but the person listening to this and not trying it out). Persona 3 portable made persona 3 portable I mean that's just amazing within itself and persona 4 Golden was on vida so the portability was just awesome on the oled screen so in my opinion you do have a point because there's more to re-releasing the game than just new story content. Just having the game available even it being older in any way shape or form gives new fandom to the OG cuz they will originally check it out. And yes he did touch on switchports but the Nintendo switch blows and has no power especially for being made in its time If the switch was made 10 years ago it would blow everyone's mind but now it's just underpowered and underutilized.
Funnily enough, people were able to enable 60 FPS on the switch version just fine with Homebrew. With a simple overclock, the game is basically locked at 60 FPS, minus some areas where there’s a bunch of NPC’s on screen. They might have been able to make it 60 FPS with some more time or more downgrades, but honestly I’m satisfied with 30.
I want to mention that the PC Port of P5R does not play well on all systems. My 3070 struggled to run the game at all, until I installed something called dxvk which fully solved the problem. It makes the game run with Vulkan instead of DX. If you are struggling with the game, go download that until Atlus patches it one day.
DXVK is a godsend. Could only hit about 130FPS on Persona 4 Golden with an RTX 2060 because of a bad DirectX 11 implementation. DXVK balloons the framerate to almost 300 and there's no stutter anymore
@@ExtraordinaryFate By default P4G has a pretty bad motion blur that just leaves ghosting across the screen as the player moves. There's no way to disable it but its power decreases the higher your FPS is. At 300FPS, the blur is removed entirely
Having done my first ever play through on the steam deck I can say I m really glad the port is that good. Runs at smooth 60 and I get pretty good battery life
Definitely agree with how Atlus' remakes tend to add content that does not match at all. This stands out terribly in the Persona 3 and Persona 4 remakes considering that these games operate heavily on themes that integrate with the narrative. For example, Persona 4 is a who-dun-it set in an isolated backwater town and a lot of the characters' story arcs revolve around how they relate to this environment. P4G detracts from this isolation by letting you go on day trips to Iwatodai city to increase social links, and even giving everyone mopeds kinda gives the main cast too much freedom.
When it comes to Persona, I usually don't even bother with the enhanced versions, since I've never been a fan of the extra story content that they provide. One of the things that I appreciate about P3FES is that it kept its new story completly separated from the old one, letting me enjoy the vanilla game with new QoL improvements, without tinkering with the story. I played The Answer once and that was enough for me to never touch it again. I'm giving P5R a shot (it's on Game Pass, so I might as well), and I enjoy some of the new things, like the little calls your confidants give you before entering LeBlanc and the general QoL stuff, but whenever Kasumi or Maruki show up, I have this feeling of "There's a pefectly functional version of this same story in which you do not exist, why are you here?" I know I'm in the minority on this, but I would much rather have versions of vanilla P4 and P5 with expanded events involving existing characters instead of new characters and story. Hopefully my impressions of them will improve over time.
@@rockapartie Thanks. I actually know everything that happens in the 3rd semester but like I said, the new story just didn't click with me. Although now I realize that, in order to get full power Country Maker, I have to finish Kasumi and Maruki's confidant, so I kinda have to do them. On an unrelated note, there's a weird visual glitch when you ambush a shadow, the "Ambush!" sign is showing at a lower resolution compared to everything else. I'm playing on a Series S, I don't know if it has something to do with that
A lot of people dislike Marie and the answer which is fair....I personally dislike the change to Chies voice actor in p4 og...I also did not like Kasumi in p5, she seems way too much like self insert I felt, seemingly with more priority the game shows than the original story friends
Honestly, I found Marie better implemented than Kasumi. Does that make her implementation and character good? not at all, but Marie felt like she added a little bit of context to the final boss of P4 while Kasumi really don't have any importance at all. Sure, there is the whole thing about her in the 3rd semester, but I feel you could have done the 3rd semester without her and it really wouldn't have changed much. Sucks because I do like Kasumi as a character, but she really should have been a new character in a new title than slapped into P5.
imo her new voice adds a great energy to the character, plus her old voice made her sound like a middle-aged woman rather than the high schooler she is.

The Devil Survivor games I feel have some of the best rereleases in the series, meaningfully expanding on their base games without feeling intrusive. It also helps that you have the option to choose whether or not to engage with the extra content.
Ironically those were made by Career Soft and not Atlus

My one complaint with these ports is that Persona 5 gets a physical release but the other games in the series only got eshop releases.

What's wrong with Redux? Sorry, I've only played the original one.

they could have easly retooled it into a big expansion instead.
p4 golden as well as the p3 versions at least make sense from a technical standpoint.(being on different plattforms, etc)
but p5 and p5 royal already were on the same system. just slap it onto a new game+ and all is good.
i hate in general how everything has to try to be this big revenue stream now.
pointless dlc: like locking already completed content behind day 1 dlc that could have been easly release with the game.
what's the point of not letting all of your customers fusion into mara or other demons in soul hackers 2? or the dumb exp, gold booster dlc stuff for smtV?(also the demi fiend stuff could have been a really cool and cute way to honor nocturne instead of just being this obvious attempt at milking more cash from people that lack self control.)
constant milking of any game that made a big splash as well as the suprise shown by higher ups when the dumb dancing spin-off doesn't ship as many copies as the main RPG title is also pretty stupid.

How is that a big missed opportunity? That's artistically bankrupt. Why do you care about that being missing?
They would have looked ridiculous.

I'm not that acquainted with persona games yet, but I think some of the better Atlus rereleases are the Etrian Odyssey Untold games where they give You the option to play the classic Game or the new version with some story and predefined characters
The games you speak of are Nintendo 3DS remakes?
The Etrian Odyssey Untold remakes still change a ton though, playing in classic mode is not even close to the same as the original game - class skill sets are entirely different, the dungeon maps and enemies are very different, items and balance are greatly modified. It's nice that they let you opt out of the new story content if you want an experience closer to the original, but it's still very different.
I love that you're bringing light to this, because their practices make me want to wait for the re-releases instead of playing the original

“The life sim elements were anxiety inducing” You know what will really cause anxiety? Touching some grass
I think it’s not unreasonable to say the switch and PC releases could each be considered better play conditions than the PS or X box releases
The customisation and graphical capabilities on PC make it great for people who love that stuff abd the handheld function along makes the switch an excellent idea especially for RPG’s where you can just pick up and grind on the bus or the loo
Not like it needs Nintendo’s shitty online to actually function
I bought it again
@@jmurray1110 understandable
Only saving grace were the bosses)
Redux was the first game where I got chaos (the new one) on my first playthrough it felt great and it was the first time I agreed with chaos, instead of the vague endings the original had, the new sub-apps are great for veterans and newcomers alike, Omen Bug, Doctor Magus and even Marco Polo although I feel like Eridanus is best played without knowing where the hidden gats are and using crab walk instead. Also Shekinah is a thousand times better than Mem Aleph, she's harder, her battle makes you use items a lot, use commander skills and constantly switch demons to defeat her while her second rewards using Demon-Coop a lot. In the original SJ we have Mem Aleph making you grind 15 levels just to get a team that can survive the first turn, which is once again easier on Redux even without DLC, also being able to switch Sub-Apps anytime instead of going to a terminal and not being locked to to just 10 for the entire game feels great
It still sucks And Alex is still a Awful Character.

@@tonyknighton4019 Am I the one not listening? You answered "Both" and deleted that comment, I have nothing more to say to you
I think exactly the same.
The only problem I have is that the pc p5r not having Raidou’s costume, easily one of the best battle themes.
I'm so excited for p3p cuz it was my intro to the series and the reason I love persona and I'd love to play through it again.
happy for you but mine was FES and I feel completely shafted.

@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective Couldn't they just use a Unity wrapper like Nocturne and call it a day? Rockstar did that with the DE of their trilogy, that turned out horribly but it's widely known why.
Redux momento 💀💀💀
Odin Sphere was a good example of a re-release. They improved the core game while still allowing you to play the PS2 original if you wanted to.
I love the most of the new editions but that’s just me
The reason why SMT Nocturne feels different on PC has more to do with the era it released in.
@@DeadYorick interesting stuff. Thanks for these comments, really informative and well written.
@@krimsonkatt you know it 100% optional aslo the worst dugeon is part of base game like entire sector e or or really crappy underground area after it
I would like to note that some of the re-releases that seem to be best-liked by the community do, in my opinion, also deviate substantially from the original creative vision for their respective games.
I don't get the problem...
You could always just...not interact with the box
I hate the fact that the DLC personas mess with the already existing fusions.
You ever consider just not using the OP personas? That’s what I’ve always done and I have the DLC on the PS4 version.
@@ExtraordinaryFate I Will be getting p5r on switch tommorow. Is all the dlc included when i buy it?
Tbh I think the 8th day is kinda balls because of how unique it makes each route
...while at the same time not offering a way to quicken the process of acquiring all the endings
It's cool that they're more unique now, but it also means that you *are* missing a substantial bit of content if you only play through the game once and don't slog through the game 4 more times to see all of the 8th day content
@@Pie_The_Man You could make a save at end of the 6th day and use to beat all other endings.
You wouldn't get 100% completion in the actual game but you would able to play all of them.
The extra content in P3P, P4G, and P5R is entirely optional too if I'm not mistaken.
Boy this sure as hell aged like milk
P3 reloaded is literally perfect
Lol look at the expansion pass
Atlus is milking P3R so hard and we can't stop giving them money
It's fine, They made it a bit too easy for my taste but it's still better than P5
I’m ready for this ❤
You keep saying the enhanced versions are worse, but never give any specific examples - especially when saying the new content changes themes.
Agreed Golden is easily the better game over vanilla P4
I see titles like SMT4+A getting lost in the dust with re-releases with the eShop for the 3DS closing. Emulation might just help with that, though.
A chance would be nice I've heard good things about SMT4 and Apocalypse.
You also can't transfer your save data to the ps5 version, so we'd have to start from the beginning all over again. Rip to anyone who wanted to do their ng+ on the ps5 out the gate
It’s not worth the price in my opinion. I already played Royal on my PS5, and the difference aren’t worth it to buy an upgrade.
@@ExtraordinaryFate thanks for your sacrifice bro, I'm definitely not waste my money, but is the 3rd semester unblocked or still unable to stream from the console ?
I just cannot understand how nier automata runs at 1080p on switch and persona 5, a ps3 game, barely hits 720p bruh
@@The_Real_DCT as if Atlus, the company that refused to port persona games out of ps for like 20 years knows about money and business.
Kinda surprised that u didn’t talk about raidiant historia
Redux is way better than SJ DS I don't care what anyone says. It improves the original design by a longshot and the new content makes the story better in all honesty. I get that people like the original, and hey, you can still 100% do that. I really hate how much people dog on it, it just... Seems like being way too nostalgic over the original.
Pretty much everything about it makes it Anti SMT. Clearly you and a whole bunch of newbies like it that way. Everyone else doesn't.

I still think persona 4 golden is the best re-release among persona games. The story is just so good. How the new velvet girl brings so much more to the table is amazing.
And FES was arguably the worst. Just added an after story that was honestly just so lackluster.
Agreed
I like P4 vanilla better simply because Marie is nothing but a generic over the top Tsundere girl and the predetermined destiny thing sucks and I wish Atlus would stop doing that, it only worked with Ryoji and Aigis.
I loved maria's inclusion to the story. The whole thing was amazing. The entire ending felt more meaningful because of her. It brought more story elements and gameplay. Oh and the music for her dungeon was godly.
@@ExtraordinaryFate Lol for me it's the best cause it'd aditions are not poorly shoerhorned into the main story and as a side game and it keeps the escence of the original intact

Golden, royal and redux are great.
And Soul Hackers (3DS remaster)
Catherine is in a weird state as well which is something that I at least like with them releasing Catherine Classic. Sure it's a bit weird to buy the older version but if I had the option to do the same with some of there other games, I'd do that in a heartbeat~
Arena's netcode really was trash
Plenty of updated or enhanced rereleases from other publishers allow you to turn on or off new content, so you can play the vanilla version as well. I wish Atlus would do this, it's even another selling point they can add.
I wish they did this with the P5 rereleses... I want the OG P5
Great video as always! I can’t wait to see what you say about Strange Journey. I played the Redux version and I thought it was a pretty solid game.

I can't wait to try out Persona 5 on Switch, I really want to play it at school and I don't like being stuck to a TV lol, especially for long games.
Im just glad that the rereleases tend to port games that are more difficult to get to newer consoles. Sure, the coat of fresh paint usualy doesent add a whole lot in most cases but having old games just collect dust and be left alone in the dirt without new ways to get your hands on them is even more of a shame.
The $60 PS5 re-release was completely egregious, and it was even more egregious to see JRPG fans act like $60 for 60 fps is a normal thing
One buck per frame, let's go.
Interesting. Do you have a source for that?

“If every rerelease had the quality Royal had, this video wouldnt exist”
What the fuck are P4Golden and P3FES then?
I mean, they did do 60 in the PS3 version on RPCS3
@@aesthet1kal emulator and overclocking the real system are 2 completely different things...
@@superwhizz114 Lol Persona 4 does not need 300fps. What are you smoking?
@@ExtraordinaryFate By default P4G has a pretty bad motion blur that just leaves ghosting across the screen as the player moves. There's no way to disable it but its power decreases the higher your FPS is. At 300FPS, the blur is removed entirely
@@ExtraordinaryFate One dollar to play persona 5 royal on game pass..,SUCK IT
Having done my first ever play through on the steam deck I can say I m really glad the port is that good. Runs at smooth 60 and I get pretty good battery life
ATLUS be like: pay 60$ for a problematic port.
Nam's be like: pay 5$ to watch a video about ATLUS' problematic ports early 🤣
Definitely agree with how Atlus' remakes tend to add content that does not match at all. This stands out terribly in the Persona 3 and Persona 4 remakes considering that these games operate heavily on themes that integrate with the narrative. For example, Persona 4 is a who-dun-it set in an isolated backwater town and a lot of the characters' story arcs revolve around how they relate to this environment. P4G detracts from this isolation by letting you go on day trips to Iwatodai city to increase social links, and even giving everyone mopeds kinda gives the main cast too much freedom.
If you have already played persona 5 or 5r, and still buy a 60 dollar port, you just like burning money.
yeahhhhh

Bruh 3rd Semester wouldn't happened without Sumi hell how the hell do you think they would found last palace? Cut the bullshit.
