Welcome to my Persona 5 Strikers Review. Persona 5 Strikers is the newest Persona 5 spin-off game. In this Persona 5 Strikers Review, I'll be going over why Persona 5 Strikers is More Than A Spin-off. This Persona 5 Strikers review isn't so much a Persona 5 Strikers Analysis, but I'll be discussing whether or not Persona 5 Strikers is a sequel to Persona 5. The question I'm going to be answering today is Persona 5 Strikers good? The answer is that Persona 5 Strikers is great!
This Persona 5 Strikers Review is a follow-up to my Persona 5 Royal review and will contain light Persona 5 Strikers Spoilers.
Special thanks to That Boy Aqua for the help with the video: / iamaquanex

The Persona series is no stranger to having spinoffs titles. There are 2 fighting games, 3 dancing games, and even 2 full-on crossover dungeon crawlers. I actually do plan on covering these games in the future, I mean, this retrospective wouldn’t be complete without them. But for today’s video, I’m going to be jumping ahead to the latest in this long line of spinoff games, Persona 5 Strikers. Though, calling it just a spinoff is actually doing the game a huge disservice. You see, despite the fact that this game was developed by Koe Techmo, The team behind the dynasty warriors games, This is very much a follow up to the original Persona 5. Not just in terms of story, but also in the way the mechanics were adapted to this new genre.
I’m going to do something a bit different this time and discuss my thoughts on the story first. This is mostly because while I enjoy the story of this game and have a few things I want to discuss, there isn’t as much dissection to do here as there would be in a mainline game. Plus, the game is brand new, so I want to give people a chance to experience it themselves. I don’t want to be the one to ruin any of the surprises in the story. I’m going to avoid discussing major spoilers, but there will be some minor ones just to get my points across. So if you absolutely want to know nothing about the story if you’re interested in Strikers, please skip to the gameplay portion of this video if you’re only curious about that. I’ll give you a few seconds to do so.

Before Strikers was released in English, I heard plenty of people on the internet, who I was under the impression had played it in Japanese, say don't expect much in terms of character development. After beating Strikers myself, I've come to the conclusion that those people are either liars or I was wrong to assume they had played the game. The first three Jails flesh out Ann, Yusuke, and Haru, respectively, with the Monarchs as their Foils and plenty of callbacks to the prequel. These characters whom I loved I now love even more seeing them grow. And thank god for Haru screentime. It was great.

I felt bad for Ann when Kamoshida was doing those things to her friend. For the craze for with Alice, and her control over desires, I instantly remembered Komoshida. You know it's pretty scary knowing the perp is right in your face as you are trying to take down their Palace/jail. We knew Kamoshida was the perp, yet he is still seen walking the hallways telling you not to talk to him, or you better get out of his way.

@@Joe_334 Honestly that's what made Kamoshida such a good villain. Not only was he deplorable and his actions irredeemable, but to everyone else, he was the cool gym teacher. Mishima said the principal and parents knew, but no one cared because he brought the clout to Shujin.
      Ann and Shiho deserved better

This is pretty much why I prefer Strikers’ story over Vanilla’s. Compared to the base game where Makoto and Futaba got the most attention, and it’s no coincidence that I’m not as fond of them as everyone else, everyone in Strikers get equal amounts of screentime (with the exception of Ryuji, Morgana, Futaba, and to some extent Makoto, and the screentime she gets doesn’t end up hogging everyone else’s spotlight). Obviously Sophia and Zenkichi are going to get the most development, but I’m glad that mostly everyone else’s roles were not wasted.

I feel like Zenkichi was somewhat weaker than Dojima in terms of the whole “my wife is dead and my relationship is fractured” aspect of his character. However, I personally think that his overall personality does wonders, and the fact that there’s *finally* an adult Persona User on the party’s side (hasn’t been one since Persona 2: Eternal Punishment) is quite refreshing.
(Edit) Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, but Zenkichi’s fury mechanic was fun for me personally. Overall, while I’m still going to remain loyal to best DILF, I say that Zenkichi is a fun character.

I like the bond system for this game. Since you maxed out the confidants in the last game and the game says the bond can't grow stronger, it only makes sense that the bond process in this game is just spending time with your friends in general rather than a full-blown social link feature (although what was said in the video is true as well. It would be hard to have a confidant system in the game with how the story is structured)

PSA: the game doesn't explain this, but if you keep fusing the same persona into different personas you get a crap load of pp and it keeps accumulating bonus stats to the point you can get millions of pp per fusion and 99 stats for all attributes as bonus. So no need to rebuy personas for points or grinding incenses for joker. Any persona you fuse that you like u can register and keep the fusion chain going. You know you are doing it right when Lavenza mentions accumulated power eventually in your fusions.

@@daniellins4114If you fuse 2 personas together you get another one. If you fuse that one you will get a small stat boost. The longer the fusion chain goes the higher the boost becomes. you can make a fusion loop and keep doing it until the boost is so big that it maxes the persona's stats instantly. Also if you do this you wil also get persona points for every fusion. You can do this with a very low level fusion loop and get milions of persona points in 10 minutes.

Unlike Persona 5 or Royal, I did take more breaks as I didnt want to wear myself out as the combat system can get much sometimes if you play for longgg periods of time non-stop. While I do miss a lot of the characters and the social systems, I found the writing and combat to be great enough to help this burns. I'm glad that with the newer "Warriors-styled," spin-offs by Koei Tecmo they seem to be pulling in a ton of gameplay elements from their home series in order to keep the combat fresh and give it extra depth. I think this is most evident when comparing the original Hyrule Warriors to Age of Calamity, wherein the original felt like mindless button-mashing, added elements from Breath of the Wild like the flurry rush, Sheikah Slate, and elemental rods bring a level of depth and strategy that manages to stave off the normal Warriors fatigue that I would get with these games. Strikers does this and more by not only bringing in a ton of elements from the original game like Personas, All-Out-Attacks, Showtimes, etc. but also by directly continuing the story as a sequel. It really does feel like if they pushed the concept a little farther, it could almost feel like a mainline game. One with a more ARPG setup, but still.

Since if you innitiate the fight, it doesn't count as you being spottet. lol I just deleted my post regarding this topic after seeing it was already addressed but I just wanted to say I'm very confident that this is a thing in Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden as well. Maybe it's just that Strikers makes it much more apparent and people just assumed that this was a new thing because this is the first time this aspect is in your face.

  • @TrashorTreasure
    @TrashorTreasure 3 года назад +38

I agree that a lot of the flaws in Strikers are pretty minor, and it's still a pretty solid follow up. I was also partly worried that the combat would get a bit mindless after a while, which is par for the course if the past few crossover Warriors games are anything to base it on, but somehow it didn't quite feel that way, probably because it was broken up with a healthy amount of story content. Excellent video!

    SPOILERS, DICUSSING ZENKICHI ARC:
I personally really like Zenkichi in how he differs from Dojima, particularly because of how it affects their family. Nanako is a lot younger, so her concern is more personal in that she believes her father doesn't love her because she doesn't understand exactly what he really does or what he wants to do with regards to her mother.
Akane however is old enough to fully understand the exact reasons her father is rendered useless in finding out her mother's killer, and she resents both Zenkichi and the police because of that. I think that's a really interesting angle to approach that type of story from.

I love how easy (technically speaking) it is to understand the combat system yet how nuanced it is to grasp the finer details of timing your combat execution. But the best part? The music and the roadtrip. It feels good to be not just be restricted to Tokyo but we get to join them and experience what is it like to be at at places like Sendai etc. Also, shoutout to the story writer for injecting humourous punchline at the right timing to elevate the dialogue cos if not it would have fallen flat to some of the more serious undertone at some point in the game.

From when he was talking about needing the early Persona's at a super high level, yes you can do what he said about summoning your strongest Persona (in reality it's the Persona thats had the most levels and points into it but yes the higher level it was initially the better, for example a Yoshitsune would give you about 300,000 Persona Points, but maxing it's level and raising it's stats, I could now get 1,200,000 Persona points from it).
But I also think most of those Personas are supposed to be summoned after beating the game and going into NG+ as every enemy you run into will basically be level 99 past the second jail.
Merciless also definitely answers his disappointment to the games difficulty, as every enemy will be extremely powerful, and even a good chunk of the basic enemys can easily put you down. Their resistance also change, in the sense that their existing ones typically get buffed into nulls or absorbs, and new resistances are added all together. It is very easy to die In Merciless mode, especially if you don't have the right bond skills and equipment.
The only real way you can even cheese the system is by abusing Freeze, and using a technical physical build of some kind and the best way to do that is 2 end game personas those being Yoshitsune and Lucifer. As Freeze is incredibly broken simply because of how the fighting in the game works. Pair this with a special boss drop (The Grand Crystal) and Joker can super easily abuse the Freeze mechanic.
Outside of that, Merciless is exceptionally challenging while also not being impossible to complete and feeling unfair, most of the times you die in that mode, it's because you failed to dodge an enemies move or simply didn't have the team and affinities prepared to fight them. The game also hands out stat buffing items all the time to help your party members become stronger which is also very useful.
It also required me to use basically every party member, while also always keeping Zenkichi on the squad at all times, his buffs and debuffs as well as his passive skill were invaluable in Merciless.
But overall with the rest of the video, I agreed with him. I loved how this game felt like a true sequel and not just a spinoff for the sake of money.

The Ai of partners is abismall. I remember during the ALice boss fight she did the wheel attack, and my party were keep suiciding on her.
This was driving me nuts. Took me several hours to finish the boss practicaly solo.
I remember there were setting for behavior, but there was no on field command for it. Also bosses have like x3 more health then they need to.

I love this game and I’ve always hated dynasty warriors. Always thought it was boring asf. But this game is great and the combat doesn’t get boring. I love how it blends persona into everything and is a p5 sequel

In a way it feels less like a warrior game, and more like a test for a new Raidou game.
Which if you don't know, Atlus made other action RPGs back in the PS2 era within a different Shin Megami Tensei spin-off series called Devil Summoners. Raidou Kuzunoha even showed up as a cameo in the persona 5 manga, so its possible this could be a test for a new Raidou game. Would be pretty cool.

i actually love playing as sopia and i feel like u misjudged her. as someone who plays her a ton i found that her gameplay is less about looking at the visual cues but more so about findig a rythem . i manged to find a simple to follow rythem and so i didnt even notice the visual cues at all because for me i was just focused on rythmic button presses that become muscle memory fairly quick. so because her rythem becomes muscle memory very quick i found her to be very capable of field clearing for example especialy in combintion with some of her support skills

I freaking loved this game, but I have to admit being a new fan who started royal made it weird when Sumire was just kind of… not there. If you have the patience for it, you’ll probably like it better if you play it after vanilla P5 but before royal

The new fusion system is honestly pretty good it'll take like an hour or so fusing and fusing and fusing to make some good ones but once you get a few all 99 stat personas it becomes easy sailing, by merging the same persona over and over again, the results I mean, like you make a jack frost and merge that into something else and merge that and so on, they accumulate power, that power raises their stats, until eventually you are just making personas with 99s all around, there are guides with loop fusions of early personas, and from there you can just merge up until you have what you need, by doing this you also end up with a crap ton of pp to upgrade whatever you to whichever level you need I have like 50million from doing this alone, and once done you never need to repeat the process since by recording the 99s into the compendium they also keep their accumulated power for further fusions.

I quite liked the "Have a persona of a certain level to make an alternate fusion path" system. It rewards the players who find a persona they like (Bicorn comes to mind but the revamped Arsene is there too) and assists a player who gets weird combos in an Accident. "Oh shit, what am I gonna do with this sudden high level Pixie? Oh, there's an altefnate fusion that lets me transfer this fusion's strength over to a higher level persona than Pixie's usual path." And with the accumulated power system, this game encourages a lot of fusing.

    So, a couple of questions:
    1) Do you have to have played Persona 5 first to enjoy the story? Or is it mainly just callbacks that I'll miss?
    2) I doubt you'd know this, based on the footage, but I'll ask anyway, in case someone viewing can answer. How's the Switch version? Any major slowdown or overall clunk?

      1) you’ll definitely miss a lot of finer details, particularly in terms of the characters, but the story is at least comprehensible.
      2) the switch version is... fine, 30 fps is a pretty big bummer for a game like this, but it actually HAS a stable framerate, unlike age of calamity. the biggest hit the switch version takes is the load times, as well as the anti-aliasing, in portable mode especially things can look pretty... choppy. not that any of that is a deal breaker though, the game is still really good, and based on your questions i’m willing to bet you ONLY have a switch, so, go for it!

      1) I haven't played P5 so far, but still enjoyed P5S
      2) I've got it on the Switch and tbh only bad loading time I've encountered is when leaving the Velvet Room, but then again I don't know the loading times for the PS and PC, so I can't really compare them. Otherwise it was pretty solid imo and I don't got any complaints, like Eclectic Spaghetti mentioned if you only got a Switch, go for it.

The biggest issues of Persona 5 are addressed here. That being that the Phantom Thieves don't feel as close as the Investigation Team and that the villains are too evil.

The main reason I bought this game was to add it to my Warriors collection (I'm adicted to this games) and now it turns out the story is good too!? That bit was worring me... Maybe I should move it up on my list and save both Hyrule Warriors for later

I loved this game and that surprised me. Sure it has a lot of beats like the original plot but the interactions and overall dialogue script is way better imo, to me this has the best and most natural flowing dialogue of any Persona game ever which is kinda surprising. Kinda wish it was a Royal sequel but oh well, I'm happy that it was more than a cash grab.
The combat system works really well and it reminds me of FF7R, kinda wish mainline experiment on this with better camera and less enemies. Overall it's a great experience and looking forward to hunt the Platinum. I hope we get to see the Phantom Thieves again in an official mainline sequel to Royal, they are so dam popular I doubt they will abandon them completely but then again I really doubt we will get that.
