Ironically this and Bayonetta 3 appear to be the perfect Halloween games for this year! I already have the aforementioned digitally on PS4 but I dunno it just feels more at home on Switch.. I may be biased because I have great memories playing many a night with P4g on Vita
Nier: Automata, No Man's Sky, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and now Persona 5 Royal. October has really been a great month for Switch users. Let's hope Bayonetta 3 lives up to all these great titles.
Thank you. I was curious how Persona 5 Royal would run on switch. I played the original Persona 5 on PS3 i think. Then Royal on PS4. So happy the game is out on xbox and switch now. The more people experiencing this fantastic jrpg series, the better. :)
Fantastic technical review switch up! In regards to the shadow issues you're referring to I don't recall encountering any shadow casting issues on the PS4 but as you stated the ones here seem very minor. I think you're absolutely spot on about the overlays considering they appear far sharper on the Switch screen then the background assets do but I don't believe it's a drastic drop in comparison to say... the base PS4 version of the game. The performance looks every bit as consistent as the original game did and the loading times seem perfect. If I were to point out any slight potential compromises, it's hard to tell but there maybe some slight audio compression it's very hard for me to tell without listening to them side by side but even then this soundtrack is so fire I really don't mind.
Picked this up with an early Black Friday price of 30 USD, the VERY last copy in the store (display unit) - and it was even the steelbook edition! for that price, it’s a steal! About 10 hours in and it definitely seems like a game I’ll put 200+ hours into. Can’t wait :)
thank you so much for the performance review! i’ve been really looking forward to this version of the game on switch, as i played P5 standard version on ps5 but never beat it. glad it’s looking well :D you’re in for a treat with this game!
P5R is the best JRPG I've played in the last decade. Great story, combat, characters and loads of content. I would say that switchup review videos are evergreen content and a great reference when evaluating a game, so even if it's very late, a full review down the line might be worth your while.
Just a note on the pedestrian load in showed in the video. That was also present in the game on PS4. I don't believe it is load in and is just a feature of the game and how the pedestrians move etc
This is my first Persona game. I had the decision of either buying it on Steam or on the Switch. I must say that I am very glad that I bought it on the Switch. It is such an incredible game and perfect to take on the go.
No matter how many times, for how long or on which platform I cannot stress just how good the post battle scene and music is, I never get tired of hearing it! Especially that funky bassline.
As someone who has only played the OG Persona 5 on PS4 (didn't complete it but loved it), I can't wait to play this on my Switch, having it portable will make it so worth it even if it's not going to run at 60fps like on the other consoles.
I'm playing on my switch for the first time and it's been a blast so far. The art style is so gorgeous! I'm 20 hours in, just beat the second palace. I can confidently say by now that persona 5 is gonna be one of my favorite games.
I played vanilla P5 on PS4 Pro. I own the Steelbook edition of P5Royal for PS4 as well (didn´t play it though). And I pre ordered the Steelbook editions of P5Royal for Switch as well as for PS5 now (which is the version I will play during the holiday season). :)
Feel like this would be a nice fit for switch OLED. Those colours would pop and a stable experience on the go would be sweet. That being said, I already own this on PS4 despite never actually booting it up once yet (damn you backlog *shakes fist) and I've also considered opting for what would be undoubtedly a cheaper pc port for steamdeck goodness or PS5 for resolution and double frame rate goodness instead. 54 quid for a standard release is asking a bit much, especially if there's no exclusive content.
I remember being in Japan before Persona 5 (non royal) came out. Adverts were everywhere for it. I’ve bought Persona 5 three times now, the original release, Royal edition on PS4 and now on Switch. I’ve never actually gotten round to finishing it and put about 30 hours on the PS4 version of Royal. But finally with it coming to Switch I can finish it. Such a great game.
I hated the resolution on handheld but I warmed up after an hour. This has been my all time favorite game for so many years and its impossible to top, and I was never happier when it got announced for Switch. I recommend this game 11/10 to anyone here
Did you manage to keep playing it? I really want to play this game handheld but when I bought it I couldn't believe how terrible it looks. Like genuinely screw up my eyes and give me a headache terrible. I tried but I don't think I can adjust to it
I’ve seen that the save doors, the shadows animated texture and the floating treasure are really choppy in terms of frame updating in a way that doesn’t seem intentional. Hope they can fix it quick!
I'm literally playing this right as this was posted on PS5, 90 hours into Royal, its a fantastic update to the original, i just didn't like one of the updated bosses in the game but i love the new additions and the quality of life improvements in this version
@@James-gj8rn I see, I have a bad habit of over leveling in games. (I may have been at least LV60 at the time) so I didn't have any big issues, but yeah the updated boss fight increased his difficulty. I never beat OG P5, Okumura was actually the last boss I beat before I dropped it.
I’ve tried a couple persona games and want to love them but I just don’t like the dating sim/relationship building parts which usually seem to be a big chunk. Great review!
I think they handled it so much better in 5 since you can do so much more outside of social sim like games and stuff and the sim actually giving you dungeon abilities n stuff. I recommend the smt series if you mostly like dungeons and story though (mostly smt4)
If you want a persona game without the sim/relationship building stuff, you can play Shin Megami Tensei, which are the main games. Basically Persona without the stuff you don't like.
I really like your not forcing yourself to speedrun games just for review/content. Some game reviewers seem to have zero enjoyment at some point in their careers just because they try to grind out content on games, instead of genuinely trying to enjoy experiences. Anyways bought mine already but wont play it until later on haha. Thanks for the review :)
Oh yeah...thanks for getting this one out early. Was waiting for the performance verdict, though I was gonna get it day 1 anyway unless there was some5hing game breaking. Also, any word on KOTOR 2 patches and that dlc?
I’ve played the original P5 on PS4, but I didn’t play Royal because I already had my fill from the first game. But now that P5R has came out on Switch, I might consider it. Thankfully I can enjoy the game without worrying about achievements
I tried the English dub for a few hours, but the way they pronounce things like Takamaki, enunciating parts weirdly (Tah kaaah mah kii), I had to change to Japanese. But aside from weird pronounciations, the performances seemed fine. For those just starting out, you'll be in 'totorial' for a few hours, and the game successively opens up as you progress out of it and gives you more freedom.
honestly so many current english dubs suffer from this and idk why thats the case , but i imagine the japanese team may have had a hand in it. i think thats part of why i enjoyed the fire emblem 3 houses dub as supposed to the japanese-english names and all manner of fantasy names dont sound so far off
@@selfefan1 If I were a purist I'd probably have more issue with them using terms like 'senpai' which don't exist in English. But I have no problem with that. In fact, I like it. This was just a case of something sounding annoying to me.
My jaw dropped today. It took me a little while to find a physical Switch copy of the game so I started playing it on Xbox Series X since it’s on game pass and it looked so stunning. So today I finally got to play the Switch version, I was super curious and excited to see how it held up against the Series X version and I mind blown by the Switch port. On Series X I’m pretty sure it’s fully native 4K, and all the 2D graphics on Switch upscaled from most likely 1080p looked virtually identical to the Series X version. Only the 3D graphics looked a bit more jaggy but still incredibly close overall to that Series X version. I still can’t believe it’s running so well and looking so good on Switch! The overall experience feels the same and with the added bonus of being able to play it portably too. This sounds bizarre but I actually prefer the slight jaggies on Switch because it evokes such Persona 4 & 3 nostalgia, to me Persona is supposed to look like that. Anyway, one of the most magical Switch ports I’ve ever experienced! And one of the most magical games ever made. Can’t wait for Persona 4 Golden next year and Persona 3 (although I wish the Persona 3 port wasn’t the psp version but the FES PS2 version since the psp version misses a lot of dialogue). Anyway this Switch version of Persona 5 is my favorite version of the game 🙏 truly something special just like you said! ✌️🥳
If you have played P5 on PS4 or something I strongly recommend getting Royal now. On the Switch or not, but I think P5 is a great Switch game. It's a lot of reading and is easy to pick up and play even for a few minutes at a time. It has regular progression checkpoints in palaces, and you can save whenever while out and about. Which I think meshes well with the portable nature of the Switch. Ranged weapon ammo being restocked at the end of the fight instead of having a specific amount every time you enter a palace is one of the best improvements any updated version of a game has ever made. I'd argue Royal is worth buying on that alone. But that's just me.
I was worried because of your title but I'm very happy the port was done very well. Been a fan of the Persona games for years and excited to finally play my top 3 ones on a single handheld.
@U Letter That's a toughie. Based on story, music, gameplay, characters, etc. I'd have to go 4 Golden, 5, then 3. 4 Golden and 5 are close with 5 having better gameplay imo.
I feel like the English dub is the only way to go if you don’t speak Japanese in this game. There’s too much dialogue and they’re done very well. I felt very disconnected with the story when I played the JP voices.
an overclocked switch was running this game at around 60-50 fps so I'm not suprised there aren't any drops also the assets streaming with the people disappearing was in the original release its a stylistic choice from Atlus.
You might have just sold me on the switch version instead of the steam deck version. Love the steam dexk but the switch being smaller and lighter makes it something I prefer playing long jrpg type games on so long as the performance doesn't take too big of a hit.
I stopped playing it on PS4 because i always tought this game is perfect for the switch or at least some kind of handheld console (i grew up with nintendo handheld consoles and playing RPGs) so i waited until i got my hands on the switch oled version to play it, was still curious about the performance but your video cleared all those doubts greatly, now is the time to order it :D
Great review as usual! It's absolutely fine to go with English VA here btw as the cast is equally good as the Japanese counterpart. It's really amazing that this is on the Switch now. With this and Nier, the console is gonna cement itself as the ultimate JRPG machine even further. I have 96hrs on the PS4 and still only nearing the end of the main story. I want to double dip but not right now since times are hard fiinancially. Not to mention I have less time nowadays to replay my 90+hrs of progress which was mostly done during the lockdowns.
Honestly the Switch's performance was always pretty much just good enough for this sort of game where high framerate or graphical fidelity isn't a constant necessity...and the handheld convenience is nice.

Will definitely be picking up Carl Jung 5 Royal, even though I finished it almost a year ago on PS4. My favourite video game franchise. I do wish Atlus would port Persona 1 and 2 though. I've never played those and I really want to.
I would love to see a review of the joycons you are using on your console at the 5:00 minute mark, I've gotten tons of ads for the Nyxi joycon and seen multiple equal joycons in AliExpress, plus the Binbok, but I'm not sure about buying them and wasting money on something that could stop working (as easily as my original joycons in which I've spent almost 60 dollars on spare parts to keep fixing them, they are already the Theseus' joycon paradox of how many pieces have needed to be changed since 2017).

I'm with ya. Just posted a similar comment about P3P and p4g. Unforgettable experiences on a handheld.
I personally think that smt/persona always is best on handhelds. Oh and dragon quest too
Nier: Automata, No Man's Sky, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and now Persona 5 Royal.
I hate that I forgot about black Friday & bought the game for $47 a day before it really annoyed me lol
thank you so much for the performance review! i’ve been really looking forward to this version of the game on switch, as i played P5 standard version on ps5 but never beat it. glad it’s looking well :D
you’re in for a treat with this game!
can't wait for Digital Foundry's video comparing this game on all six systems!! glad to see you dissecting the switch port
Yeah they do such great work over there. Met one of the guys, really nice people as well. Mark
Happy to see the performance being solid. Looking forward to picking it up whenever it goes on sale.
P5R is the best JRPG I've played in the last decade. Great story, combat, characters and loads of content. I would say that switchup review videos are evergreen content and a great reference when evaluating a game, so even if it's very late, a full review down the line might be worth your while.
...
These kinda comments make me hold off tbh...
You can overpraise a game...
@@repeekyraidcero then your missing out on a great game
I prefer P5 Strikers, but to each their own
@@TheBlueGoldenHawk The musou style was nicely implemented on that one, but I do prefer P5R.
@@ricardoluna4402 I'm not a turn-based RPG guy, so I mainly loved everything outside of the combat in P4G and P5
Just a note on the pedestrian load in showed in the video. That was also present in the game on PS4. I don't believe it is load in and is just a feature of the game and how the pedestrians move etc
Yeah. It's an intentional style choice
Are you aware how to unlock the new story arc?
@@Kejosruler the extra semester? I kinda spoiled myself on what to do to unlock it but i haven't seen what it's about 😅
@@JuanD817 Good that you know without knowing what will happen :)
What a month October has been for Switch, just pure quality, and Bayonetta will serve the best Cherry on top 🤗 can’t wait!!!
Really glad to hear this assessment and that you’re enjoying it so far.
I'm really impressed overall honestly. There's always a couple of nitpicks but nothing to write home about. Mark
I'm literally playing this right as this was posted on PS5, 90 hours into Royal, its a fantastic update to the original, i just didn't like one of the updated bosses in the game but i love the new additions and the quality of life improvements in this version
Which Boss may I ask? I beat it on PS4, but I love this game so much, I can't remember any bosses I hated
@@thesosoartist4458 okumura I figured out a good party to beat him after searching online and if Joker didn’t have Sudama, I’d have been really stuck
That boss was bloody terrible in the first place
Yeah, they did some very weird stuff with that boss in Royal
Yessss! I've been waiting for this for ages. So excited!
I’ve tried a couple persona games and want to love them but I just don’t like the dating sim/relationship building parts which usually seem to be a big chunk. Great review!
You can try persona 1&2 they didn't have social aspects that 3-5 have. They are more old school dungeon crawlers like smt.
I think they handled it so much better in 5 since you can do so much more outside of social sim like games and stuff and the sim actually giving you dungeon abilities n stuff.
I recommend the smt series if you mostly like dungeons and story though (mostly smt4)
Try shin megami tensei. No social aspects or calendar management
If you want a persona game without the sim/relationship building stuff, you can play Shin Megami Tensei, which are the main games. Basically Persona without the stuff you don't like.
i just ignored that stuff in persona and gone platonic
I really like your not forcing yourself to speedrun games just for review/content. Some game reviewers seem to have zero enjoyment at some point in their careers just because they try to grind out content on games, instead of genuinely trying to enjoy experiences.
Anyways bought mine already but wont play it until later on haha.
Thanks for the review :)
I’m so hyped for this game! Can’t wait to play this masterpiece! 😄
refuse to rush through it, GOD BLESS YOU, you shining being
Oh yeah...thanks for getting this one out early. Was waiting for the performance verdict, though I was gonna get it day 1 anyway unless there was some5hing game breaking.
Also, any word on KOTOR 2 patches and that dlc?
Aspyr have been worrying quiet since they lost the KOTOR remake :/
I’ve played the original P5 on PS4, but I didn’t play Royal because I already had my fill from the first game. But now that P5R has came out on Switch, I might consider it. Thankfully I can enjoy the game without worrying about achievements
I tried the English dub for a few hours, but the way they pronounce things like Takamaki, enunciating parts weirdly (Tah kaaah mah kii), I had to change to Japanese. But aside from weird pronounciations, the performances seemed fine.
For those just starting out, you'll be in 'totorial' for a few hours, and the game successively opens up as you progress out of it and gives you more freedom.
honestly so many current english dubs suffer from this and idk why thats the case , but i imagine the japanese team may have had a hand in it.
i think thats part of why i enjoyed the fire emblem 3 houses dub as supposed to the japanese-english names and all manner of fantasy names dont sound so far off
Wow purists are really nitpicky, not insufferable at all.
@@selfefan1 i get what you mean. also apparently the japanese clients are the ones who insisted they pronounce the names like that
@@yareyarejose5080 Yeah it's probably up to the voice direction, since it seems consistent in this game.
@@selfefan1 If I were a purist I'd probably have more issue with them using terms like 'senpai' which don't exist in English. But I have no problem with that. In fact, I like it. This was just a case of something sounding annoying to me.
The "loading issue" isn't a switch thing. It was in the PS4 and PS3 version of vanilla and royal
overworld npcs suddenly exist and de-exist randomly
Hello backlog thanks to Switch up. Man I just got Nier and No Man's Sky 😭
Hehehe you're welcome 😝
Handheld/tabletop mode was how P4G on Vita was supposed to run
But that's just me.
all the menus and art being in 1080p is a blessing
Persona 5 has one of the best dubs in JRPG's and anime in general. Ryuji and Yusuke are my favorite characters for line delivery.
This game is fantastic ! Enjoy it guys !
i've played it on ps4 and now i've pre-ordered for the switch version, damn can't wait to play it in portable console
Why does everyone pronounce it as "royale" when it's just royal?
I was worried because of your title but I'm very happy the port was done very well. Been a fan of the Persona games for years and excited to finally play my top 3 ones on a single handheld.
@U Letter That's a toughie. Based on story, music, gameplay, characters, etc. I'd have to go 4 Golden, 5, then 3. 4 Golden and 5 are close with 5 having better gameplay imo.
I feel like the English dub is the only way to go if you don’t speak Japanese in this game. There’s too much dialogue and they’re done very well. I felt very disconnected with the story when I played the JP voices.
Playing this on the OLED in handheld is spiritual.
I plan on getting this physically. 😋
Someday that is.
heheh yeah! Mark
Ima get it next check
@@itsyaboiherman nice! Good for you. It will be a while before i can get it though. But someday for sure. 😋
an overclocked switch was running this game at around 60-50 fps so I'm not suprised there aren't any drops also the assets streaming with the people disappearing was in the original release its a stylistic choice from Atlus.
21 October! Its my birthday!! A perfect birthday gift, I’ve been interested in the Persona series for years and now I can finally get into it!
I can't wait to finally grab this for Switch. I've missed being able to play it and am thrilled I can one day finish it on Switch
Thanks for putting in the price using MX pesos, goes a long way
You’re welcome
Honestly the Switch's performance was always pretty much just good enough for this sort of game where high framerate or graphical fidelity isn't a constant necessity...and the handheld convenience is nice.
Got my Steam Deck so it's been a while but i wanted to check out this review. Love your guys channel.
Just used your 10% discount for a $50 eshop card, you will always have my business from now on so long as these discounts continue! Gonna get Bayonetta 3 or Xenoblade Chronicles 3 now, thanks!
Cool review. I like that you stayed away from the "full review" aspect. As someone who played the original and just wanted to get the details of how the port is, this video is perfect.
Cheers!
the intro pun is the best one yet!
i’ve played this game at least 10 times on the playstation and i’m so glad to hear that they didn’t mess around with the port
Two things I've got to give standing ovations. Loading transition screen and different assets resolution for 720p and 1080p
Will definitely be picking up Carl Jung 5 Royal, even though I finished it almost a year ago on PS4. My favourite video game franchise. I do wish Atlus would port Persona 1 and 2 though. I've never played those and I really want to.
I’m so excited to play this, was getting it on PS5 but it seems to be the perfect fit for switch.
Azdin of Grinning Wolf Games had a review and we use them all the time, there’s a discount link in description. Perhaps a full review would be good - they’re decent though. Mark
Omg so glad this is great! I'll definitely be picking this up! Cheers guys seeeeeeyaaaaaa!!!
The NPCs streaming in and out was a thing on Persona 5 vanilla with the PS3 and PS4. Might be safe to assume it's a stylistic choice?
It is. They also did the same on Royale PS4 and they are doing the same on my PC which has a Ryzen 7 3700x CPU and a SSD
Sweet been looking Forward to this, having only played strikers
Man, your title really had me thinking “Oh no, they screwed up!”
Thank god they did a great job.
I played Persona 4 on Vita and was blown away. I hope 5 does the same on the Switch!
My favorite game ever (next to BotW) is finally available in portable mode. I'm buying it day 1 and completing it for the third time 🥳
Favorite persona? Definitely a tie between Beelzebub and Baal for me.
So glad this runs well on Switch! Played this game on PS4 back when it came out and did it twice. Have a great time with it!
the disappearing and reappearing crowd is actually a normal part of the game im pretty sure. I remember it happening in the original and in royal
Really looking forward to picking this up!
Thanks so much for the review! You sound exhausted & said it has been busy. And all Persona games are definitely those to which you should take your time and enjoy every second of them! Get some rest!
THE biggest thing I'm wondering is that does Morgana still burr in Mementos if you rub the controller, like he did on the PS4 version?
I feel like you got your Duke Nukem voice going in this vid lol
The price, ouch… I might check it out once the price drops a bit!
