All the sudden the caps crash down on you ( the 4 story building ) as it crests.. your now swirled around until it spits you out. Hence the rag doll comment.

Inside the channel is so deep. Then boom 3 feet away from the surface is literally a concrete shelf, on both sides. It's literally the perfect set up for the heaviest wave in the world. I can watch these videos for hours in absolute awe. These surfers are a little insane!
