Mr. JJ McCullough is a good friend of mine who I met around a year ago now. He primarily makes videos on countries, cultures, and Canada! Not exactly the same niche as me, but we are both creators nonetheless!
He was nice enough to offer to have me and tour his vancouver apartment for this series! And I think this has been a great addition.

JJ’s apartment is nothing like I expected… and yet also exactly like I expected? Not sure how that’s possible but it suits him perfectly.
One of his friends did a tiktok video of his apartment a few months ago. That's when I first found out about the ball 🤣
Yeah, I expected a bigger apartment, but this makes perfect sense somehow...
I'd say "it surprises you because it fits his personality very well."
The only thing that surprised me is how silent and echo-free the studio is. i was thinking it was just a repurposed bedroom as a recording studio with foam everywhere, inside a regular apartment.
The fact that JJ’s been sitting on an exercise ball this whole time explains so much of the bouncing around in his delivery.
Also, the 13 star flag is hung backwards. The union is always in the upper left.

@@masterofsmokemonies I think he does know better. I've watched several videos of his that discuss that fact. I'd be interested to know why he hung it that way. I'm sure there's a reason.

I actually ran into JJ on the skytrain once and he was a super nice person. One thing that surprised me about him was how tall he was. Something about sitting on an exercise ball made him seem a little shorter. I regret not getting a photo with him.
He’s half Dutch through his mother so he was going to be tall no matter what.
That's wild because I thought the exact opposite. I thought he would be taller, and attributed my misconception to the fact that he sits on a ball.
I met him and he wasn't notably tall.
He can't be that tall. You can't sleep in a twin with headboard/footboard if you're tall.
@@luke_cohen1 i always assumed he was like slightly below average by american standards. Like 1.72 to 1.76 meters. He is skinny and boyish looking, but to be honest, i never thought about his height.

I am a minimalist. And I absolutely love all the ‘stuff’ in the apartment. It’s purely JJ. I find myself exploring the background in the videos, smiling and looking for new stuff.

It makes a lot of sense that JJ is a PaperMate Flair guy. His apartment just exudes PaperMate Flair energy.
70's PaperMate Flair commercial energy. JJ is a Canadian adult version of what seventies US kids wished they could be. PaperMate even had commercials narrated by Ken Nordine.
As someone who has watched J.J. McCullough's channel for years, this is really cool to see. :)

I love the cluttered aesthetic of J.J.'s apartment, it gives so much personality, history and visual interest to the space. Makes me want to try to achieve something like that in my own living space eventually!

The more I watch and know about JJ, the more I realize how much more we have in common; value wise, especially, more than I ever thought before. Not sure what it was, but my respect for JJ has only grown by great amounts in the last few years and seeing this side is quite subtly revealing of that.
When he started up about the pen I half expected him to say "When I was a kid, I had a pen that I was very fond of...."
One of my grandparents when I was a kid defended my “messy” room (which basically looks a lot like his apartment in that it wasn’t messy per se, it just had a lot of books, collectibles, and photos/posters/flags/etc on the wall) to my parents by telling them that it’s a smart person thing. Not sure if that’s true and my parents still get on to me for the way I decorate/arrange my house even now, but it’s nice to know a really smart guy like JJ basically decorates the same way! Oh and from watching this video as someone who also doesn’t enjoy cooking and eats out a lot, watching this gave me an idea of how to relieve my lack of book storage space! Thanks to you for making and sharing this and thanks to JJ for graciously opening his home to be shared! I love his channel and it’s great to see the behind the scenes of where he films a lot of his videos.
I'm a big license plate guy and when I saw his plates I gravitated towards them.
The Colorado "Pioneer" plate is interesting because it used to be that you had to prove through records that your family was in Colorado during its founding or homesteaded in Colorado before it was a state.
This hasn't been a thing for a while but I remember reading a news article several years ago where a guy spent hundreds of dollars digging up records about his family to get one of those "Pioneer" plates only to find out at the DMV that the plates are open to everyone who asks for one now haha

I honestly thought he lived in a 1 bedroom and always assumed he recorded in his living room. It was a bit of a shock to see the bunk behind his studio setup. Considering it's Vancouver it's not a huge shock that he lives in a studio and it's that expensive. When converted to USD the amount he pays is about 140 dollars more than what I pay for my 2 bedroom, it's a huge difference living there and living where I do in suburban Kentucky.
Compared to comparable places in Houston, he's living cheap. Massively cheap.
Insane! I'm just right across the bridge from Kentucky and my duplex is less than half of what JJ pays a month and it's more than twice the size. Not in the best of shape and it's old but it's cheap. Also it's a ten-minute walk to a very affluent area.
@@Bacopa68 Ehh, it's probably on par. I found a really upscale apartment complex in Houston with 1 bedrooms available for 1200 dollars. That appeared to be the going rate for a couple other I saw. He's paying 175-200 less for a studio so it's more or less even, not "massively cheap"
JJ is the best. Wonderful profile, thank you for doing this!! And let's just say JJ's place is nicer and more well appointed than many museums. He should give tours, that wouldn't be weird... We promise... 😳😳😳

I honestly never knew jj lived in a studio apartment. I always assumed he had a lot more space to work with tbh. Also I couldn't fathom paying that much for a studio. I pay about half that for my one bedroom and that seems like a lot

The high ceiling makes SUCH a huge difference. Im from NYC and they literally charge people $1800+ for *closets* that they call apartments. I lived there my whole life but after spending the past 7 years poor (ever since 17) I just had to give it up. I cant afford to live there so I had to move.
JJ is living the dream - nice studio apartment with lots of cool stuff, in a great city and eating out for every meal.

Yeah, I figured he'd either live in a big house with a dedicated video recording/editing space, or a tiny apartment. But not quite THIS tiny.
But, honestly, this looks like a dream place to me. Basically one room with a corner for work, a corner for sleeping, and a corner for cooking. Bathroom, some kind of a closet/storage space and I really wouldn't need much more. More space would always be welcome, but eh, I could still make it work.

I love this! I’ve watched JJ for years now and I love his videos! As someone also lives in Vancouver and who lives in a living Room I’ll say he’s go a great set up! And the decor is just amazing!

This is exactly what I expected. The ceilings are much higher. And I would have guessed the bed would be lower. But I don’t count those petty details. haha
The way people have their spaces is so fascinating I often think about my room as a weird little time capsule like if i just disappeared and it was all someone had to go off to work out who I was and they just had this little moment of my life frozen in time

it’s bigger and smaller in different ways than in my mind. When you see it through the screen it looks much more cramped and cozy but I also assumed his apartment had separate rooms and that was just his recordings room.
I live in a studio and also have a loft bed I love it!
