I am learning SOOoooo much from your videos! I'm really glad I found your channel! I'm a single female with no carpentry experience on a minute budget! Knowing how to do something right THE FIRST TIME is a HUGE plus for me and helps to save me from getting into what can potentially become a tremendous money whole problem as it relates to renovations. I need to do this to both my bathrooms and as money smart as possible! Thanks so much for making the instructions palatable! I truly DID UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING YOU EXPLAINED AND IT MADE ME NOT SO SCARED! (I'm actually tearing up right now. When you don't have help (other than God of course, for whom I am ALWAYS grateful to have by my side), video's like this are really very valuable and I'm just really grateful to have found your channel.😌)
Idk if you still need info lol! But what i was taught was to put grout on the back of a tile and place it on your wall or counter. Use spacers then put more grout overtop then wipe the excess off . I am not a professional but uhm that's how I do it
Another great video. I'm fortunate I came across your channel a few months ago...now I wait for updates. I just used this technique this past weekend to remove the tile wall around the tub. After first few blows to the wall it started coming off relatively easy and with much less mess to clean up afterwards. Keep it up and thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise with DIYers and weekend enthusiasts like myself.
Loved this video. Was very helpful in preventing damaged to the firewall behind the green board in my condo. Worked like a charm. Only deal is that the firewall wasn't installed to code originally. Had four large holes in the wall. Actually is was just a bunch of left over pieces nailed to the studs with 1-1/4" nails in the 5/8" fire - x gyp board. Removed the existing firewall with my hands, no tools required and rebuilt the whole thing. It is amazing what you uncover when you rip open the walls.
Hey guys, I'm closing on my first home early June and I am so fortunate to have found your channel. Everything here if super informative and makes me feel good about going at it myself. Thank a lot and keep up the great work. You have a subscriber for life here.
Another great video Jeff. As a baby remodeler I demo’d many a tub surround. I will never understand why the “pros” on tv want to make a huge mess by beating the hell out of a tile surround. Even if you aren’t saving the tub, this is the way to go.
Thanks for chiming in Patrick. The difference between t.v. and real life is.....real life is a little boring to watch. But this technique will save time and money. Cheers!
I’ve demoed a few tile surrounds. They were of the mud and metal lath variety. If there’s a way to take that stuff down without a sledgehammer, I’d love to know what it is.
different ways of doing things in different countries, in the UK you would never take it off like that. We have something similar to drywall called plasterboard but the walls ar solid and the plasterboard are glued on to the wall completely.
Doing this right now. Being extra careful hammering the tile where the plumbing is. I don't need any accidents there! I'm replacing the shower pan and going to run the tile up to the ceiling. But I'll never unaderstand why some people don't use gloves and especially glasses when doing this type of work!
I'm buying a condo and need to redo the 2 bathrooms and the kitchen. The firewall left behind, if I want to tile the walls do I need to put up an additional layer of drywall over the firewall? If so, do I need to use a vapor barrier behind the drywall? OR should I get the same type of cement + styrofoam + mesh thing then tile over that?
yes the firewall should never have any finishes on it. that way the next person knows it is a firewall. Besides the firewall is designed to be 2 layers thick for the burn through time. Cheers!
do you have any suggestions for a renovation of a bathtub and shower that is tiled with a window at the back? I also have tile 2/3 up the wall all the way around the entire bathroom. How can I remove the damaged areas of the tile within the tub/ shower, while not destroying the wall tile that goes around the rest of the bathroom? My plan is to find a close match tile to redo the shower and tub areas, while leaving the rest of the tile intact and somehow make it look right. If you have a video on these topics, can you tell me what to search for please. IF you don't have a video on this, any plans to create one? My plan is to use your cement board backing, with that painted on water barrier for the renovation within the tub and shower area. Thanks in advance!!!
I'm dreading doing this in our bathroom. I love our minty green tub from the sixties, but I've had a time finding replacement tiles! It was "regrouted" with caulk at some in its life and the wall is squishy two tiles up from the tub Dx. Ugh.
Mold was not the enemy here. That was a 20 yr old bathroom with a quality substrate. The only problem it had was it was ugly. The client was updating the entire look of the bathroom with tumbled marble.
I have this exact situation with 2 x 5/8 fire rated drywall. I'm planning to install 1/2" cement board over top and apply aquadefense. What is the recommendation for installing the cement board over the firewall? Are 2 1/4" screws sufficient to penetrate the board + firewall and hold the weight of the board + tile?
Thank you for subscribing. Ity is an honor for us to help you through this challenge. We have other plumbing videos as well if tonight's isn't your cup of tea. Feel free to ask questions along your journey and I will be happy to help. Cheers!
Long time subscriber here. Have an issue with just this issue.... My reno bathroom was installed with a drop in tub with no tile edge or tile flange installed. Water flows under the silicon behind the wall. Going to remove bottom row of tiles and install the tile flange... What adhesive do I use? Is there a tile flange kit you recommend.
Sorry to hear about that Kyle. I would install whatever kit is available. They are just molded plastic. Then I would take a roll of schluter Kerdi band (Available at home depot). install it along the bottom of the wall and 1/4 inch onto the tub. Use the non modified mortar. This will give you a seal that will last1000 years. If you just want to use a sealant then use lepage seal and bond or the kerdi fix from schluter. The seal and bond product is far superior to silicone and is in the paint section at the home depot as well. Cheers. Either way it will last longer than we will.
Did this today for the first time (I'm a roofer) only had a pry bar and hammer. Thankfully I cut the joints with my knife like he did. Luckily I decided it was good to go for whatever reason
I would buy a smaller car to get the same result. That is a lot of structural changes. Make sure you get an engineer and drawings so you don't run into major long term problems.
Most likely when the shower was first built the silicone around the tub held water behind the tile and caused the frame of the wall to initiate the mold growth. once it finds water it never stops growing even if really slowly due to the cement backerboard.
should I be looking to seal all grout lines on the wall? It sounds like water will get through the grout, drip down the wall and mold will grow in the caulk lines between the bathtub edge and wall tile?
We have blown-in fiber glass insulation behind one of our shower walls. What are your suggestions as to how to demo the tile away from that wall? I'm pretty sure there is just drywall behind the tile, maybe two layers of drywall. I'm trying to avoid a huge mess with all that loose insulation falling out when I bust up the tile/wall. Thanks!
I recently bought a house that has what I can best describe as mosaic art in one of the bathroom floors. In what way should I go about removing that. SN: I am a first time home owner and dont know all the correct terms. There seams to be more "grout" than tiles in there install.
Hi there, your floor is mosaic, this means that you probably have about 1 1/4 inches of cement under the tile. the good news is it breaks up really easy with a hammer. my advice is to start close to the toilet flange so it breaks off in big chunks and is easier to get rid off. please wear glasses and use gloves to remove. The cement is most likely sitting on top of a piece of waxed paper and may have a little steel wire in it so you might need some snips to cut it out as well. And don't forget to have fun. Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Thank you so much. I have found your videos to be so helpful in the preparation of being a home own. Please keep doing what your doing!
Hey Jeff, not related to the video, but i wasn't able to find one similar to what im working on. We build an enclosed porch by the backdoor, and i wanted to get your opinion on the best way to do a few things. Against the house, we are looking to sheetrock it down to the concrete slab. What is the best way to go about hanging the sheetrock against the foundation? There is about a 1/2in between the OSB bord and the foundation. Thanks
First I don't recommend sheet rock in an unconditioned space. Try to use a t+g wood or wood panels of some kind. The high moisture levels in an oudoor space will surly mold in no time. Hope this helps.
Hi do you know when that cement board with styrofoam bubbles came on the market in Canada? I've been taking some out on a bathroom of unknown age and was concerned about asbestos.
I find it a pity sometimes tiles usually can't be saved for re-use. Some tiles are very nice, or historical :) like Delft's blue. I actually live where those were (and are being) made. :) And good work! These were a bit more stubborn then others you did
I find that just as much damage happens from having debris trapped under a blanket while I am stepping on it. In most cases if you are careful then you are fine. and if you have a problem then you call in the re finisher. they make it all new for a reasonable price.
I was about to ask why not use a rotory hammer tool with a chisel at the end to destroy everything.. then I saw the title and understood 😂 i like the idea of the video but it aint for me :/ i like to destroy things during the demo lol
Your video is removing the tile without damaging the tub? Your working with hammers, chisels, screwdrivers and pry bars and tearing out tile and cement board without any covering on the tub? Good Luck.

Exactly what I needed for my condo in the same substrate situation (firewall, interior wall, and exterior wall). Thanks to your tips.
this video was exactly what I needed! Only if I was able to find the second part where you would explain the installation of the new tile.

Currently demoing a 1940's bath, with seemingly bulletproof tiles, wire lath, and plaster. I'm envious of how much progress you're making so quickly.
Lol I went thru the same thing. I wish it was this easy.
This video helped me so much! I had no idea how to remove the cement board. I was trying to remove the tiles first but that took forever!
Glad it helped Keith. That is one stubborn substrate!
On houses from pre 1980s can that fire wall be asbestos?? Are you better to leave tile in place at that point ??
I usually put a painters canvas drop cloth down in the tub for scratch protection
I like my moving mat. But cheers to being careful!
Great video again Jeff, best on RUclips. I’ve learned and saved a lot from ya, keep it up sir!

am remodeling my restroom am looking for someone to do it but i did side it to do it my myself, what is the easiest to remove tile .
Good. Just use a good mask and kept the area ventilated. The silica+adhesive dust mix can cause some serious damage to your lungs.
Can you do this if they use screws or nah.

water always gets behind the tile through the grout.
Home RenoVision DIY thank you so much! I will be sealing grout soon. You are such as pro, others can do, but not like you!!!
should I be looking to seal all grout lines on the wall? It sounds like water will get through the grout, drip down the wall and mold will grow in the caulk lines between the bathtub edge and wall tile?

Hi do you know when that cement board with styrofoam bubbles came on the market in Canada? I've been taking some out on a bathroom of unknown age and was concerned about asbestos.
Does this method work for metal studs ?
sure does. Cheers!
not mentioned is putting a work blanket down so you don't scratch the tub
What kind of tile is this because it's the exact kind that I'm trying to get rid of in an old house!?
Is there a way to remove the tub without taking out al the tile ?

Thank you for these tips. I'm curious about the tool you were using when hammering between the bathtub and tile. What's it called?
Its called a 5 in 1
Wait, so where was the mold coming from? Those walls look pristine.
EDIT: Referring to 9:19
from the framing. There is no seal from the tub to the wall board.
Please come do my bathroom I’m a great cook my bathroom looks so bad but I don’t know we’re to begin 😔

While you are upgrading, why not a lower body spray to go with the new Fawcett.
Why didn't u put a blanket in the bathtub?

What a bunch of work. I'd just get the homeowner to spray paint the tile.
LOL. not exactly the look I was going for.
Home RenoVision DIY just kidding!
a better way to protect your bath tub add a subfloor cut to fit your tub and any tile chips falling will not even go near the tub
I have tried that and found it incredibly in the way of trying to work. I can't stand up and then I am pulling on my knees. Not a good experience.
