    Transcript:
    This video will introduce you to Creative Commons licenses, which makes copyright easier to understand.
    Let’s say you create something.
    This thing could be creative, like a picture of your cat, or scholarly, like an essay about cats.
    Because you are the creator of this picture or this essay, copyright allows you to decide what people can do with your creation.
    [Dialogue bubble appears on screen: X is okay but you shouldn’t do Y with my work.]
    When you are the copyright holder, people have to ask you for permission before putting your cat picture into a PowerPoint or adapting your cat essay into a movie.
    Getting permission can be time consuming and complicated for both the creator and the user.
    [The following dialogue bubbles appear on screen: Who has copyright? How do I contact them?! I need to know if I can use this ASAP (as soon as possible)!]
    This is where Creative Commons can help.
    Creative Commons exists to make permissions explicit and straightforward.
    Creative Commons licenses use icons and simple language so that creators can make their intentions clear and users can be certain that their use of a work is legal.
    [Sample Creative Commons license displayed. The Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license has icons above the title. Below the title is the simple language section detailing what “You are free to” do in terms of sharing and adapting under this license]
    These different licenses help people understand if and how they can use, share, or build on a work.
    [The six different Creative Common licenses are displayed on screen]
    This icon [Noncommercial] means that only non-commercial uses are permitted, so no one can profit from using your picture.
    [Noncommercial icon has a dollar sign with a circle around it and a slash through it]
    This icon [No Derivatives] means that no one can make changes to the original work, such as photoshopping a dog into your cat picture.
    [No Derivatives icon is an equal sign with a circle around it]
    This icon [Share Alike] means that someone can change your work, but their version must be shared under the same license as yours.
    [Share Alike icon is a circle with an opening on the left side, the top side of the opening has an arrow pointing down to the where the circle begins again]
    All Creative Commons licenses give credit to the original creator, preserving your reputation as a creative genius while the world engages with your work.
    [Creative Commons license is displayed on screen with emphasis on the By icon (which is a the silhouette of a person with a circle around it)]
    Licenses can be attached to most things, including blog posts, images, artworks, journal articles, and more!

    (thing licensed) from (where I got it) by (author) is licensed under (license).
    (link to where I got the icons)
    (license link)

    So even if the photo they took is a toy of hello kitty I can use it aslong as I credit them and Sanrio won’t have a problem with it? What about a Nike shoe? Can I incorporate the sign into my art from the photo on Creative Commons to make a Nike shoe as long as I credit the source?

    • @JohnBartmannMusic
      @JohnBartmannMusic 2 месяца назад +1

      Short answer: the author might be OK with it, but Nike may not, but probably won't ever notice or care.
      The original author of the work doesn't have the power to authorize the use of the Nike logo in your artwork. Because this case would depend on the outcome of legal proceedings which will probably never happen, you are quite safe to use a Nike or Hello Kitty logo provided that your work is justifiably considered artwork and not commercially-motivated copyright infringement.
      Summary: brands only care about copyright infringement when you're financially succeeding as a result of infringing on them. For art projects, you're pretty safe. But yes, go ahead and comply with the terms of the Creative Commons license by crediting the original author.
      Hope it helps. If you need Creative Commons music for your next video, you're welcome to visit my channel - all free when you credit me as the author 🎶

    So how can we give credits to the creators while making a monitesed youtube video for example?

    • @JohnBartmannMusic
      @JohnBartmannMusic 2 месяца назад

      You MAY monetize RUclips videos that use Creative Commons work on condition that you credit the author in the description of your video, even if the CC license states "non-commercial only".
      This is because the definition of "commercial" only applies to products (digital or physical) that are being SOLD, neither of which apply to the free PUBLISHING of RUclips videos. The logic is that if your video is popular enough to make any meaningful revenue through monetization, the reputational boost that the author receives will be worthwhile. Most videos that are eligible for monetization don't make very much in views or revenue, so nobody loses out.
      On the other hand, if you're being paid to produce a video for a client, you are SELLING your services as a video creator, prevented by the terms of any Creative Commons NC ("non-commercial" ) license, meaning that you would have to pay the creator something. Failing to do so would be unfair because the original author would lose out.
      Hope it helps. If you need Creative Commons music for your next video, you're welcome to visit my channel - all free when you credit me as the author 🎶

    How do you make sure the link to the license shown is not fake?

    • @photios4779
      @photios4779 3 года назад +2

      Excellent question! What matters the most to me when it comes to being able to trust a CC license is the reputation of the source. I have no problems trusting a CC licensed work made available by a reputable university or cultural institution like the Smithsonian or British Museum, or a well-established and trustworthy photographer who makes his works available on his own website or his official social media account under a CC license.

    • @photios4779
      @photios4779 3 года назад +2

      It's not so easy to know for certain the license is valid when you're visiting a repository of CC licensed works to which anyone can freely upload, such as Wikimedia Commons. Someone could steal a picture from a stock photo website, upload it there, and any innocent user who comes along and wrongly trusts the license potentially could become liable for copyright infringement. I have encountered a few horror stories involving legal threats that were sent to people who were fooled by a fake CC license into unwittingly infringing the copyright of a third party. But here are two things that will help you to minimize your legal risk. (1) Check to see if the uploader is a long established member of that community who seems to have a positive reputation as a productive contributor with no known copyright issues. It's riskier to trust a license when a new (and even more so, an anonymous) user uploads a few photos and then disappears. (2) Do a reverse image search using a search engine like TinEye or Google Images. That involves uploading your photo to the service, which will then tell you if the same photo appears elsewhere on the Web. If you discover the photo available for sale on a stock photo website, then that would be a huge red flag that the license is probably not valid. Unfortunately, in many cases it's not possible to know with 100% certainty whether a license is valid, but you can often get a reasonably good idea through careful research. (P.S. I'm not a lawyer, and nothing I said here is legal advice.)

    Can you charge people for your work with a Creative Commons license?

    • @JohnBartmannMusic
      @JohnBartmannMusic 2 месяца назад

      If the Creative Commons license is not "non-commercial" (CC BY-NC), technically yes.
      But the problem for all the other license types (eg CC-BY Attribution) is that even though they doesn't prohibit commercial use, you still have to credit the author in the work. And typically, clients don't want to credit Creative Commons authors. For example, you'll never see "Music by XXX" in the credits of a RUclips ad because it "cheapens" the brand. So the actual answer is "probably not".
      In your case, you'll need to approach the original author and pay them to supply you with a license that states you've got permission to use the work commercially.
      I do this all the time with my Creative Commons music, most recently licensing a track to Canadian TV streaming service for far more than the price of a donation. In return, I just send them a license agreement which clears them legally.
      Hope it helps! Feel free to browse the music on my channel for your next video.

    I am surprisingly shocked and impressed. This is seriously the most beautiful, well formulated video ever. I can’t believe how magical it felt at 1:20. That part truly made me shed a tear. Multiple teara, actually. And especially at 42:29 that part was just so truly heart touching words can not describe the series of emotions I felt. I absolutely loved the climax it had insanely excellent detail. Oh, and we can’t forget the conclusion. The conclusion was the greatest and saddest conclusion I have ever seen better than any of the videos I have watched. The piece lf bacon spinning in the dishwasher was incredible and mind-blowing. Thank you so much for creating this absolute masterpiece. This is essentially the most important masterpiece of RUclips history. It is a tragedy that this, it can’t be called a film, but a transcendent emotional experience, will be inaccessible for most. It beautifully encapsulates the human struggle to its basics; suffering, pleasure, faith, despair. It connects with the characters within the viewers, individuals suppressed within our own subconscious. It stays vibrant, fresh, and revolutionizes the art of storytelling and filmmaking while making a damn of statement on what it means to be human. Entertaining, gripping, and simply exhilarating. This might be the most impactful piece of art I’ve come across in my life, and I’m definitely coming back to it in the near future to study it more deeply. this is an absolute masterpiece , it absolutely moved my soul , and I don’t think I can ever be the same. This essay balanced my life forever. I have stopped thinking about horrible things in our lifetime, and I can’t thank you enough. Thanks.
