    Thank you so much! Our dog chewed up our door insulation and I just needed to replace one side. I could not figure out how to put it in. But you made it look so easy. It just slides right in. It turns out I was trying to do it upside down.

    Quick tip for the slots so you dont have a build up at the top corners, you can trim back the folded part for overlap without build up so its even, but keep the part that goes into the slot so it holds it.

    Dustin, well done. Just bought a place where the main door requires a hip check and/or shoulder applied to open/shut. Turns out the stripping on the hinge side looks way too thick for the application. I appreciate your kerf/no kerf heads up. Off to the store. Thanks, man! 🫡

    Oh well, I couldn’t get it in the slot. It’s exactly like the one we took out but we couldn’t get the new one in. You made it look easy but it wasn’t.

      Hey Siri, take a scraper or painters tool and run it down inside the slot to make sure you don’t have any pin nails, preventing the new one from sliding in. You got this

      Hey pretty. Oh yes the question is at hand, how do I make my door smoke proof? The weatherstripping will definitely help, and get you one of those draft blockers underneath the door and you’ve got it whipped. I hope this helps

    Hi Dustin, I really like and use your videos, but this video will not help me because our exterior door frames don't have the slot like in your video. Our house was built in 1964 so I would like your opinion for the best weatherstrip to use for our exterior doors. Thank you for your great assistance !

    Great video. I put it around all sides now my door won’t close. I left one side out but I see tiny day light. Can I trim it or they make smaller widths? Thanks.

      Great question Harris. If the door is now too tight and won’t close and latch, you may need to move the latches to accommodate the new weatherstripping. You’ll be happy when it’s done :-) you got this

    How are you getting it in so easily? I can only get the top and bottom in and then, no matter what I do, it won't slide into the groove. It's like it's too big to fit or something. Should I pry the gap to make it more open?

      Hey these. I would not pry the gap… That would split right off. There may be something obstructing it. I have seen them with pin nails and then before if that’s the case, just use a paint scraper and break them. You got this.

    This is great, but what about when you shut the door and daylight can still be seen? I'm sure I did it wrong, but I placed various sizes of the stick-backed weather stripping on top the the type you used (by the way, what do you call the type used in this video?).

      Heyhey. It’s kerf. If you replace it and still have daylight, you might need to adjust your door. Catch to keep the door tighter when shut. You got this

    Can you use this weather stripping for the bottom of the door frame as well?

      Great question, Sally… No, you cannot, they have different styles called a sweep. Generally in the same aisle, where you found the other weatherstripping.

    Any suggestion for getting the old strip OUT that's stuck in the slot with multiple coats of paint over the years?

      Hey Alden. Usually you can grab an end of it with a pair of pliers and yank it out… I have seen it where it has been tack nailed in before if that’s the case you would need to use a chisel and busters pin nails out to get the new piece to slide in. I hope this helps painters tool rocks!

    I bought some kerf stripping but it just falls right out of the slot as if my kerf is too wide for the little teeth of the stripping. Any issues with using some adhesive or do they make it with larger teeth?

      Hey GG. You may want to try some tiny Brad nails. It seems that an adhesive would be messy. I hope this helps.

    Bought this house last spring, and I am changing the weather stripping. But now the door won’t close. Any suggestions? Are there different thicknesses I need to look for? The original was a flimsy rubber kerf, and I replaced with what looks like you have, says seals up to a half inch gap.

      Hey glad. I don’t see this working in that application. Replacing the doors is usually the best option.

    Thanks. What if the kerf on my door jamb is on a different surface? The slots are on the periphery/adjacent surfaces and not the frame/the surface that is facing you as you're looking out through the opening. Where do they sell weatherstripping for this non-standard setup??

      Hey sonic. If it’s not this style, you can use the metal Weatherstripping with the rubber bead. It’s installed with the door shut, but will work on just about any door that this video will not. I hope this helps.

    Are the side pieces interchangeable? When I bought a couple at the hardware store they are definitely not symmetrical. Also, if I don't own a snip and wouldn't make sense to buy one just for this project, can I cut the weather stripping with just a utility knife? Thanks, great video.

      Hey Gwynn Yes the side pieces should be interchangeable and you can cut these with scissors.

      Hey John, if you need the door to shut tighter you can move the door knob catch in towards the house to make the door shut tighter. You got this

      Great question DJ. If it does not have the slot, then you would want to use the screw on metal weatherstripping with the rubber bead. I have a video.

    I replaced the weather stripping on the door with new product but it is very loose and there's no way to fix it tight in the groove. Any tips to get it to lock in there? Pushing harder doesn't help; it's likely the groove is just too big in a few places. And somehow I don't think glue is the right solution here.

      Hey Barnaby, sometimes it can be a challenge… You might try Brad nails holding in the edge of the fin. I hope this helps.

    What if the kerf strip doesn't just slide right in? I just started working for a buddy learning general contractor work. Did this yesterday and had to bang the kerf strip in with the butt of my snips. Took a long time and too much gusto for my care.

      Hey James if it doesn’t slide right in then there’s probably pin nails or glue. You do run into those once in a while but it’s rare. I’ve had it so bad where you’d had to notch the little barbed fin to fit it in the slot I hope this helps

    What if there's still a light gap and draft after replacing this? My door had another insulation thing attached to the outside edges of the door that fit into the frame, but I'm not sure if I should do that again or something else.

      Hi destiny. If you had this style of door with the gap and you replaced the weatherstripping that should be all it needs. You might try to move the catch , the metal part that holds the Latch in just so the door shuts tighter up to the jamb I hope this helps

    What if the kerf is in the jamb instead of the stop? If that makes sense. I have aluminum "V" shaped stripping right now, but it looks terrible.

      Hey neuro . In your case you’re going to want to remove that little copper fin deal from the 50s. Then you will want to go with the metal strip with the beaded rubber on it. I have a video for that. It’s weatherstripping without the kerf slot. I hope this helps.

    Hey the weather stripping I bought to replace the old has a thinner channel than the old. The kerf is a lot wider than the channel is. So, that makes the weatherstripping not stay in place and very sloppy loose. I don't have much experience with these things. Can you tell me how to get the weatherstripping to fit correctly? Thanks

      Hey funny woman. I’ve run into this a timer to.If it won’t stay in there you can use a few Brad nails to tack it in place. If the fan won’t slide in all the way you may try to trim a little bit off If it won’t slide in all the way. I hope this helps.

    What if the fins are too short to grab. Weather strip just falls out.

      If the fins won’t grab. The next solution would be to move onto the beaded metal weatherstripping with the rubber. Not sure why that wouldn’t work with the fins, this is not the preferred way but you could also use tiny finishing tack nails through the gym to hold the fins of the Weatherstripping .       @@homemend Thank you very much. The reason the fins are not grabbing is the gap is too big at 1/4 inch. I also shined a flashlight into the gap discovering the wood is beveled away creating an even larger gap. The tack nails might work. If not I can use your other suggestion. Is the beaded metal stripping available at home depot and lowes?

    Painters suggested I replace the old weather stripping around the front doors which I trying to do. Was NOT looking forward to the actual job and still am not. The slot is clean and free of debris but it does NOT install. A royal pain in the ass!

      Hey Gary, check to see if there’s a little pin blocking it from sliding in sometimes people install them with the pin nails if they can’t get them to stay in, which may be a solution for you. If you do see them, you can take a chisel or a painters tool and bang them to break them to free up the slot. I hope this helps.

    How do I know I have kerf? Are all channel stripping kerf?

      Hi Michael, that’s the brand name of this particular kind. It’s sold by the piece in the big box stores and if you have the slot, the kerf should work.

      Hey James that would require a sweep, do you have ones that go directly on the bottom of the door and also ones that go secured to the inside of the door. If your sweep is broken at the bottom, you may need to pull the door to replace it. I do have a video for it. I hope this helps
