I am attempting to crochet for the first time ever and this has been so immensely helpful. No How to Crochet tutorial video I've watched has shown me how to count stitches. And for some reason I decided to try and knit a baby blanket for my first ever time, and I had no idea how to double check my chain was 73. So thank you for this!!!
I just completed a blanket, and yes, I get lazy sometimes, and do not count. Crocheting for more than 60 years and never thought it was so important to count until today. I had to pull out a project completely because it was so lopsided. No more laziness for me. Thanks Jayda. I should have known better, but I learn something new each day.
+dancinggirl75 * giggle * oooh, it's so easy to be lazy and not count (or we lose our count and have to start all over again!!) But yes, I had to learn the hard way too! Pulling out our work can be so discouraging, but whenever I have to I always tell myself it's a lesson ... but that's mainly so I don't throw the whole thing out the window LOL
I’m with you 💯 %! I’ve crocheted for almost as many years & counting while so important is sometimes tedious…. Especially when you need 2 pair of glasses 🤓 to see those first & last stitches in the row. I KNOW how you feel! 😉
Wow.. ive been trying to crochet for 10 years and when i say trying i mean I've never really finished a project. I think the reason is i get confused counting stiches and finding where one begins and another ends. Having to frog everything is frustrating and I end up giving up. Thank you so much for your help! I can't wait to try again.
I'm not a beginner crocheter or an expert, but I never really knew how to count single crochet stitches, thanks to you I now know, you must be a teacher, you are so patient and care enough about what you are teaching, love your show...I just kicked my crocheting up another notch!!

Thank you Jayda for teaching how to count stitches and how to count a chain. I have been doing projects and was not keeping count correctly. My last project (a scarf) I ended up increasing (making 2 stitches in one stitch) accidentally and had to pull out the whole project. I also did not know how to count the chain either. Thank you! I'm new to crocheting and have taken on two chunky blankets that I though would be “easy” but because I didn't count my stitches I've had to re do them several times. So very frustrating. I thought they would be easy but it turns out that they're not!! Thanks again for the reminder. 😢
I learned how to tell where the last stitch is a couple days ago and I've been crocheting for a good while now and have never heard of it or payed attention to it. So, when you get to the end of a row there is a little bar at the very end that is shaped like a rainbow...so you would crochet right at or before that little bar..not into it or under it. You should still see the rainbow or bar after you make your last stitch. I hope this helps someone. Would be so much easier to show it. Lol Have a blessed weekend everyone. 💕😊✌️🙏🏻

Wow, sounds like the lead into a great story...or, possibly a horror movie I'm not sure which LOL I am definitely working on doing a video for this, I think it would be fun!
Hi Donna, Thank you for watching :) It really depends on the pattern you're making and what stitches you're using as they can all differ quite a bit! If you're working on a project that is only double crochet, for example, instead of chaining 3 and turning at the end of each row, you can try chaining only 2 as you turn. That will lesson the 'hole' at the ends of your blanket :)
Hi! I noticed you were helping people in the comments with trying to understand patterns their working on, I was wondering if you could help me? I’m working on a sweater and I’m stuck literally at the beginning the pattern starts off as “row 1- ch 6, row 2- turn, ch 1, sl st in blo (6 sl st), row 3- 82 (86,94104,116):repeat row 2”
i`m new at crochet too..oh boy you don`t know how many times i got confused in counting the stitches i made!!! :) sometimes i make them tight some others bit loosen and when i `m trying ( ! ) to count them from the front...haa haa...disaster !! that was a very big help for me to learn to count them with a better way..(ok i admit, sometimes i get bored to count them...:P ) thanx so much for the tip Jayda !!! :)
sunsetlight no problem! It IS annoying to stop and count all the time, but it really saves us a lot of time later on from having to rip everything out and start over! :)
Hola Jayda. I have a question, I am making a Skoll Blanket, (SC) all the way. for some reason, I am confused a bit on counting my rows, before the pattern starts. Can you help me with this, I do the 200 chain (RS) and do so all the way, come back. That will be my first row. Do you know what I am trying to seed? Stupid question but I am a bit confused. Thank you again. Have a great week. Just love your videos. Happy New Year. Gracias. REPLY
Hi Lolita, the easiest thing to do if you can't easily identify your rows is place a stitch marker (or safety pin) on the end of every row when you finish it, then it's easy to count them up :)
Very helpful video. I was wondering if you can provide some tips when it comes to counting the stitches per row. I'm currently working on a blanket and using all single crochet and as I start each row, I begin counting to a certain number in which I need to place a stitch marker, but I'm noticing that as I do that, the marks aren't lining up. I've doubled checked each stitch and I can't understand why it's so off the mark. I hope I've explained the problem well enough.
+1csudds Ah, if you're placing a marker, say 10 stitches in on a row, and leaving it there, when you count 10 stitches to that same place a row later, it will look off. The reason for that is that crochet stitches don't line up directly on top of each other like knitting stitches do. So long as you have the correct number of stitches per row (so if it's 100 and you have 100 every time), your markers won't line up, but your stitch count will be correct. I hope that makes sense!
+Jayda InStitches it does! thanks so much. I wish that could just be mentioned when learning to do single crochet lol. I thought I was losing my mind or forgetting how to count. any suggestions if i somehow end up with an extra stitch or 2 by accident?
If you're up or down 1 or 2 stitches, you can single crochet 2 together, or single crochet 2 into the same stitch to even things up...in the long run these little 'cheats' won't be noticed :)
+Melissa Quinn Hi Melissa, I have a video on using a stitch counter for working in the round that you might find helpful, you can find that here: ruclips.net/video/ws6vehJCCh4/видео.html
Hi Jayda. Will you do a video on crochet evenly around, specifically in single crochet. The edges are very difficult to determine in single crochet. TIA.
+Angela Strickland Hi Angela! When you say, "evenly around" do you mean like a border on a square, or single crocheting in the round (to create a circle?)
I've been searching for a teaching specifically on the sc border concentrating on the edges. I enjoy your teaching and this will be very helpful for all of us.
Jayda. I’m having the same problem over and over again. I am mentally challenged a bit and new to crocheting. I start with 59 stitches in row 1 and in row 2 also but then in row 3 I get 60 and there are no double stitches. I’ve redone the row more then 10 times. I think it may be in the beginning if or end. I skip the 1st stitch but I count the chain and I put one in the last turning chain from previous row. Do you have any idea what I might be doing wrong because I do it lot in many projects and I’m confused. Please please help me. I don’t have anyone to help me. Thank you. I’ve learned a lot from your videos.
Hi Tamy, if you're following a written pattern, be sure to make note of whether you are supposed to count the turning chains as a stitch or not. If you are using single crochet, you don't use the turning chains as a stitch and you would't work into the top of the turning chain when you get to the end of the row. This might be where you're having some difficulty :)
What if we do like 2 chains at the end of first row.. which one would be the first chain? I dont know if you can understand this, my english is not the first language.
Hi Zuzu, the first chain on a foundation chain row is the first chain you make. If you're counting away from the Hook, the chain right next to the hook (not the one that is still ON the hook, that isn't a chain just a working loop) would be the first chain from the hook or the last chain made. I hope that helps!
+Maru Shard 27 I have a tutorial that discusses that, it's on using a stitch marker for working in the round and I point out how you can count your rows :) You can check it out here ruclips.net/video/ws6vehJCCh4/видео.html Thank you for watching!
If you are connecting a row with a slip stitch, does that slip stitch count as a stitch ? When I’m crocheting in the round, and have to do a slip stitch, I’m always confused as to whether it should be counted in the total number.
Hi Allie, by 75, you mean rows? If you're counting rows, you can count the ribs on one side of the piece. Start counting on the side where the rib that sticks out is the second row from the start. Then you can count by 2s. Every rib that sticks out on the side that you're looking at is every other row :)
Hi Peggy, that depends on the stitch pattern you're using - if you're using a solid double crochet stitch, and the chain 3 you're skipping counts as a double crochet, then you would have 76 stitches (the chain 3 counts as 1, plus a dc worked into each of the 75 chs).
When you ‘join with a sl st”, does the ‘v’ that shows up count as your “first st” or is it the ‘v’ that you can easily see that is next to it? For instance, the pattern will say “joint with a sl st to your ch 3. Then it will say, hdc in the first st. Does that mean the same st as you joined in, or the one next to it? Is the one that is next to it the ‘first st” or the “next st”. This confuses me big time! Lol. Thx
Hi Elaine, patterns are all as uniquely written as books! If your pattern has a notes section, be sure to read it, sometimes things like that are explained in the notes section. Typically, if you chain 3 to begin a row (and it counts as a dc, something the notes would indicate) then you would begin your first real stitch in the stitch next to where you joined. If it says "chain 3, dc in the same st as joining", then you dc in the same st that you sl st into. Also, working in the round can differ a little from working back and forth! It depends on the pattern :)
So, when they say "never count the slipknot," does that mean never count that actual little knot made by the slipknot, *BUT* count the loop portion that was made by the slipknot? Here's a horrible visual, but the only universally understandable 1 I can come up with: *If the initial little loop we created with a slipknot was a noose, we would count the loop portion that goes around my neck as a chain stitch, but obviously, not the little knot that sits behind my head.* Do I have that right?
Hi there! The knot created by the slip knot is usually small and tight and nearly impossibly to get your hook into, so yes, you wouldn't use it, nor would it be easy too. It's just the tiny knot at the end of your work that keeps it all from unraveling. The first loop you make, is created by taking that first loop off your hook and pulling yarn through it. Those are the stitches that you use :) I hope that helps!
There are two holes in one stich. This is confusing to me. It's hard for me to figure out wich one to go through when Im making my ring for the granny squares. And the ring is hard for me to find too lol I'm a mess.
Hi! If you're having trouble keeping track of the centre ring that you work through for the first row (or round) in a granny square, it might help to make it bigger: chain 6, 7 or even 8 chains to begin with and then join to make a ring. that will give you a much larger ring and it should be easier to keep track of it. Alternatively, you can mark the ring with a stitch marker and that will also help you keep track of the ring as you work :)
Hi! Typically when using the single crochet stitch, you would chain whatever number in a foundation chain row you want, and the last chain would become the turning chain. So like you said, if you start with 10 chains, you single crochet into the 2nd ch from the hook and that will give you 9 single crochet sts by the end of the row :)
Hi Edlisia! It depends on the pattern you're working on. If you're using a specific stitch pattern, you want to follow the formula. For example, a pattern might say "foundation chain row that is any multiple of 4, plus 3 for turning" in which case to enlarge a project with this formula you would calculate a foundation chain number that is a multiple of 4 (say 100) then measure the length of your foundation chain to see if it's large enough, continue adding sets of 4 chs until it is, then you would add the extra turning chains, in our example here that would be 3. If you're increasing midway through a project from 120 to 144, you would take the difference (24) which is the number of increases you need and divide it evenly along the length of your project. BUT every project is different and these are examples based on something flat, like a blanket :)

Hi Jada! Oh do I ever need your help! I am ready to try my first ripple afghan. I want to make sure I get even sides. I know counting is important, but I have seen where some people also use stitch markers on each end. I am so confused even more now, as where to place the stitch marker, if there is a turning chain ? The more videos I watch, the more confused I seem to get!!!! Can I just get by with counting each row of my ripple afghan before I begin a new row? For example, if it says to crochet 200 chains to begin, as long as I come out to 200 stitches on each row, is that how it's done? Sorry for the long post, I'm just wanting to get started on this new project......thank u

A trip down the stairs and into my basement....where all the giant bins reside, each full to popping with skeins and skeins of yarn?? Wow, sounds like the lead into a great story...or, possibly a horror movie I'm not sure which LOL I am definitely working on doing a video for this, I think it would be fun!
Jayda InStitches yay!
Hi! Do you have a video on how to keep edges straight and without holes? Thanks.
The number in row 3 are the amount of stitches I should achieve at the end, the ones in parentheses is for larger sizes.
i`m new at crochet too..oh boy you don`t know how many times i got confused in counting the stitches i made!!!
yeap ! that`s a biiiig true !! :) thanx again!! :)
Gracias.

Hi Lolita, the easiest thing to do if you can't easily identify your rows is place a stitch marker (or safety pin) on the end of every row when you finish it, then it's easy to count them up :)
that is true I was doing single crochet
+Jayda InStitches thanks so much for your help! and for your time in replying. you're awesome!

I'm new to crochet, love your videos very helpful.
Thank you Lymorale :)
Can you or have you made a video of counting when working in the round??
+Melissa Quinn Hi Melissa, I have a video on using a stitch counter for working in the round that you might find helpful, you can find that here: ruclips.net/video/ws6vehJCCh4/видео.html
+Jayda InStitches thank you that did help a lot
Hi Jayda. Will you do a video on crochet evenly around, specifically in single crochet. The edges are very difficult to determine in single crochet. TIA.
+Angela Strickland Hi Angela! When you say, "evenly around" do you mean like a border on a square, or single crocheting in the round (to create a circle?)
A border around a square. Working into the side edges are difficult. The square never lies flat.
Ah! Yes, I cover that as part of some of my other tutorials, but I think a dedicated video on that is a great idea!! Thank you for the suggestion :)
I've been searching for a teaching specifically on the sc border concentrating on the edges. I enjoy your teaching and this will be very helpful for all of us.
Thank you so much!!!
Thank you for watching 😊
Wish you would have shown the place for the starting and ending sticthes, sometimes it's hard to see where the stitch ends at the end of the row.
excellent video
Hi Peri, thank you for watching :)
I hope that helps!
thanks very helpful tip but can u do one on how to count rows in rounds? I have a vary heard time doing that
+Maru Shard 27 I have a tutorial that discusses that, it's on using a stitch marker for working in the round and I point out how you can count your rows :) You can check it out here ruclips.net/video/ws6vehJCCh4/видео.html
Thank you for watching!
+Jayda InStitches ok thank you I will check it out
If you are connecting a row with a slip stitch, does that slip stitch count as a stitch ? When I’m crocheting in the round, and have to do a slip stitch, I’m always confused as to whether it should be counted in the total number.
nope, that's often called the false stitch. Typically you skip it :)
Do you count the slip knot and the loop that is the result of the slip knot? I’m so confused.
Hi! The loop that sits on your hook is not counted. The knot itself is not counted. Once you chain 1, that becomes your first chain or stitch.
Thanks again!!!

Jayda HELP :) please I'm doing single crochet back loops only and need 75 do I just count the ribs or the ribs and the space in between the ribs
Hi Allie, by 75, you mean rows? If you're counting rows, you can count the ribs on one side of the piece. Start counting on the side where the rib that sticks out is the second row from the start. Then you can count by 2s. Every rib that sticks out on the side that you're looking at is every other row :)
If you start with 78 chains and skip 3 to start the next row, how many should you have on your hook - 75 or 76? New crocheter. Thanks
Hi Peggy, that depends on the stitch pattern you're using - if you're using a solid double crochet stitch, and the chain 3 you're skipping counts as a double crochet, then you would have 76 stitches (the chain 3 counts as 1, plus a dc worked into each of the 75 chs).
Can you make a single crochet in to squares
Hi Mary, yes! In fact I made little ones for our Graphghan here: ruclips.net/video/y5hcjgDn7CM/видео.html
I never knew this was here...how many times did I miss read the title?!
How do you count rows for back loop single crochet?
That's even easier than regular crochet, you just count the ridges that are made on each row, they run across the top of the stitches :)
Thank you Jayda for your response.
When chaining 10 sts, shouldn't next row only have 9 sts because you go into 1st chain frm hook?
Terrific!
Thank you for watching 😊
How do you calculate on how many stitche's you need to do increase's for example 120 to 144 and up
@@JaydaInStitches Thank you so much Jayda you really know how to explain thing's I was watching a video where all she did was give instryction's on the screen but no vocal to it what a challenge lol :)
Hi Tina! We have a tutorial on the Ripple (Chevron) Blanket that you might find VERY helpful in this regard (I don't use stitch markers at all!! ) You can find it here: ruclips.net/video/y6gsjckd_5I/видео.html
This is a topic I am not good at doing. This is helpful.
But it would have been easier to listen without the background music happening while you were speaking.
I can’t count if the yarne was dark :(
do you have a Facebook page?
+MommyOfOneAngel Not at the moment, but you can follow me on Google+, Instagram, Pinterest and over at my Etsy shop :)
+Jayda InStitches I don't use instagram, don't understand pintrist as it seems pointless, also not sure what etsay is. thank you for the response
Etsy is an online Market place (where I sell other patterns, but it has a nice little chatting interface too), Instagram is all pictures and Pinterest is like a big, personalized project journal - it also has a nice chatting interface. Also, Google+ has a nice chatting interface, and is pretty much Facebook, just attached to all things Google!
how do u count rows
+Jenny Gamache Sounds like another good Quick Tip! :)
It is I don't know how to count rows
It entirely depends on the stitch you're making too, some rows are easier to see than others!
I know how to count stitches when u make the video let me know
Waitttt count every stitch?????
Disappoint no subtiles for deaf uk😢
Hi Jacqueline, Make sure you've turned on the CC button (bottom right corner of the video frame) on the video playing. Thank you for watching! :)
I05mm
Background music very annoying
Far too talkative and time wasted dilly dallying to show her point.
Thank you so much!
Glad it helped!
