Even though I put a border on my afghans I've always bristled at that gap. I've been a crocheter for over 55 years but never bothered to look into a workaround. Love your favorite method and can hardly wait to practice it tomorrow!
I've been playing around with ch3 substitutes for a while because I don't like the gap that the chain leaves, but not settled on a particular method yet. This was super useful to see them all together!
I've been crocheting for 51 years and this is the first time seeing these techniques, with the exception of ch 2 beginning crochet chain which I use. Can't wait to try the other two alternative stitches to see what I like best. Great video. I think it will be understandable even to a beginning crocheter.
Almost ten years of crocheting and I swear I learn something every day! Great video! Thank you so much! And to everyone who got as frustrated as I did at the ends of rows, don't feel like you have to go exactly like the pattern, sometimes there are little tricks that make much more sense! Patterns usually say chain up three and I thought I was supposed to but it drove me crazy!
I am a new crochet person and have been learning how on youtube. Your techniques are wonderful, easy to follow and fun to do! Thank you so very much for this wonderful tutorial. My afghan I'm making for my grandson will be better because of you.
I just finished a cable stitch hat and I wish I had known this stitch before I did that one. Thank you for sharing! I will practice these. I think I like the look of the third one you did best.
lordy lord! you have just kicked up my crochet game a thousand notches! thank you thank you thank you!!!!! ugh i hate that gap that the chain 3 leaves...so happy to know that there is a solution to that!
THANK YOU for sharing these alternative starting stitches so clearly : ) I've been playing around with variations on these lately. It's worth taking a little extra time to find the best method for each pattern and yarn to make your project look great : )
I am an experienced knitter but decided recently to learn about crochet because I feel each has their strengths and best uses. This is a video I will watch again as I am in the process of "starting over" in finding ways to make my crochet work as beautiful as possible just as I try to make my knitting as beautiful as I can. There's always a basic way and a better way. Thank you!
Great video. Twenty years ago I switched to knitting because the gap and uneven edges drove me crazy... I'm a little OCD anyway! But I recently took a break from knitting and dug out my crochet hooks , and just found your video!! Exactly what I needed. Thank you so much, I believe I will keep crocheting now!!
Great ideas! I've never seen the middle option before. I've used the last one but always had trouble knowing where to make the last stitch. Thanks for the great video!
What a great video! Exactly what I was looking for. I never knew how to end the row so I watched your video many times to visualise where to insert the hook on the last chain. I learnt two things at the same time. I have got to master the twisitng of the hook to make a dc, a very elegant and a professioinal finish. Very well explained and in detail. Excellent zooming so it was pleasant to watch and understand. Most videos are not worth watching as there is NO zooming and they don't think of beginners. Congratulations to you. You are so humble and you are gifted for teaching. Thanks for sharing and caring. Your fan from France. xxx
As a beginner crocheter I've used the sc + 1 chain as a turn ever since I first saw your video. Those gaps just made me nuts. Thanks so much for the tip.
This is brilliant! Very helpful and looks very neat, especially your 3rd option. I love it! I practiced doing it many times and feel comfortable now doing it this way. Thank you so much!
The single crochet and chain one is probably my favorite- I’ve tried a couple of times to do the standing double crochet and while it looks good, I struggle to keep them uniform and wrap the big loop. It’s a happy middle for sure!
I discovered that after I'd been using the no-turning-chain dc for a while. I've been using the sc+ch1 method more recently. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I learned to crochet from my mother when I was young. She called it a False Double Crochet. :) I never knew it had another name. I never chained three. I use false doubles.
I like the chain 3 at the end of the doll tops and dresses I make as they become the button hold for the buttons down the back of these crocheted items. But I see that other projects could use this chain 2 approach. Thank you so much for showing this.
Amazing video!!! I hate the gaps that a chain leaves! was thrilled to find your tips and tricks! I am now subscribed and will follow! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank You sooo much. Just wish I’d seen this before I started my current shawl project that leaves one edge without a border. Hate those holes! What I can’t figure out is-why don’t pattern writers include any of these methods? Any one of your ways is preferable to the 3 chain up pattern method.
i always hated that gap! but i was still getting a gap with the single crochet chain one technique. tried a half double crochet chain one and it worked nicely! thank you for the tutorial. proves even this old girl can still learn new tricks! '->
Love this, thank you!!! I've been crocheting for probably more years than you have been around . . . :D and I have never seen this technique. Thank you so much!!! I will do it always from now on. :)
I am teaching myself how to crochet. Just 2 days now and I couldn't figure out why mine looked different then all the videos I was watching fir beginners. Thank you for this video it is helpful.
I use the no turning chain double crochet, but after I turn the yarn on the hook giving myself two loops on the hook, I insert the hook through the first stitch before pulling a loop through so that I have three loops on the hook and can make a proper and solid double crochet. It comes out nicely. You have to be careful not to pull the initial loop up too far.
My grandma used to crochet with fine thread and she did the third method all the time! I just wish my grandma was still alive to help me with this!! Anyway I am familiar with that method but I find it very hard to do.
I love the third option the best; however all three options work well. I can't wait to practice the last one. Makes edges very straight and looks nice and neat and that is important to me especially when making items for gifts. Thank you.
I always chain 2 instead of 3 because that doesn’t leave a huge holes or I’ll use extended single crochet if I need too. I think you just have to play with around with your crocheting to get what you want and what works for you. But I never chain 3.
I have been using the no turning chain double crochet for about a week now. I still can't get a consistent result and I hate that large diagonal strand of yarn & even more, the loop that hangs out the top. Your single crochet and chain one seems so much easier and consistent. I think I'll try switching to that since I will need to frog the 1/3 of a scarf I have been practicing on.
The no turning chain dc certainly takes some getting used to. The sc+ch is simple and effective. I think it's a good choice. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Thanks for this video but could you please tell me if you are putting a border on do you treat the gap as a1 or 2 stitch along the border edge so it lies flat. I'm a 70 year old in Northern Ireland and I have just seen your videos for the first time. I took up crocheting 6 years ago when my husband passed. Have done a few blankets since then but the borders give me lots of problems to get them flat. Many thanks again.
Hi Kay! For this stitch, use 2 stitches per row for the border. If there is ruffling, reduce the stitches. Maybe one stitch every 2 or 3 rows instead. Don't be afraid to add or take away border stitches so it lays flat. Your tension and yarn choice can also effect your border. Feel free to play with it.
Hello. Thank you very much for this great tutorial. I would like to ask if the nonturning method still counts the same as a chain 3? I am going to give this a try in my current project. Thank you. Sharon
You can also for the turning chain just Chain 2 instead of Chain 3 and when you make the following Double Crochet on the second stitch from the previous row, not the first stitch, the third chain will happen, be formed, appear automatically at the connection point of the two stitches. So, Ch2, sk1, DC. Check the turning chain now. You will count 3 chains on it, one more than the original 2. I have also seen some Ch1 and then do the DC in the first stitch. They don't Ch2, only Ch1.
For the no turning chain DC method, do you do your next normal dc into the 1st or 2nd chain from the hook? I assume the 2nd since the chainless dc is substituting the ch3 you would no otherwise?
Even though I put a border on my afghans I've always bristled at that gap. I've been a crocheter for over 55 years but never bothered to look into a workaround. Love your favorite method and can hardly wait to practice it tomorrow!
I'm so happy to hear this! That third one takes some practice but I think it's worth it. Enjoy!!
It works beautifully. Thx a million!
Great demonstration on how each looks after completion. I like the SC plus the ch 1 the best. The edge seems to be straighter. Thanks.
I've been playing around with ch3 substitutes for a while because I don't like the gap that the chain leaves, but not settled on a particular method yet. This was super useful to see them all together!
+Bookhouse girl Great! I hate that ch3 gap too.
Love this video, especially the end where your work clearly shows the difference. Your steps were very well presented - You got my subscription!
Thank you 🙂
I've been crocheting for 51 years and this is the first time seeing these techniques, with the exception of ch 2 beginning crochet chain which I use.
Can't wait to try the other two alternative stitches to see what I like best. Great video. I think it will be understandable even to a beginning crocheter.
That you so much. I appreciate your feedback. And I’m so glad you found it helpful, even for an experienced crocheted as yourself! 😊
Almost ten years of crocheting and I swear I learn something every day! Great video! Thank you so much! And to everyone who got as frustrated as I did at the ends of rows, don't feel like you have to go exactly like the pattern, sometimes there are little tricks that make much more sense! +Nomad Yesmad I'm glad this helped you 😊
I am a new crochet person and have been learning how on youtube. Your techniques are wonderful, easy to follow and fun to do! Thank you so very much for this wonderful tutorial. My afghan I'm making for my grandson will be better because of you.
+Janice Scavella That is so wonderful to hear! Thank you for leaving such a kind comment. I'm sure that Afghan will turn out beautiful. 😊
Thank YOU! And, yes, glad you showed what to do at the end of the row! So glad I found you on here!!!!
I have never thought about closing of that gap. My work will look so much nicer. Thank you very much.
+Kathryn Ellison 😊 You're welcome
Well done!!!!! Been crocheting for 70 years. Sooooo happy I found you!
Fantastic video! I really appreciate the extra instruction on how to work into the stitch when you come to it on the return row above. Thank you!
That gap has bothered me for decades! I am so glad I found this video! Thank you sooooo much!
You’re welcome 😊
Awesome video with excellent directions - many thanks!!
Thank you so much +Cindy Lyles! Glad you enjoyed the video. :)
Excellent video!! You’re a lovely teacher!! I love your style!! 💜
+Alice Bair Thank you so much 😊
I just finished a cable stitch hat and I wish I had known this stitch before I did that one. Thank you for sharing! I will practice these. I think I like the look of the third one you did best.
I have been crocheting for over 50 years. I always end a DC row with a CH1, turn, then do a DC in the first stitch. Easy and no holes.
lordy lord! you have just kicked up my crochet game a thousand notches! thank you thank you thank you!!!!! ugh i hate that gap that the chain 3 leaves...so happy to know that there is a solution to that!
+Rebecca Tibbits 😄 These tricks make such a big difference. I'm so glad you found this helpful.
Beginner here--thank you so much for this tutorial! Love seeing all methods and the finished edges all in one video.💜💜💜
I’ve watched at least 8 people do the third option….I had given up doing it but you actually taught me how! Thank you!
THANK YOU for sharing these alternative starting stitches so clearly : ) I've been playing around with variations on these lately. It's worth taking a little extra time to find the best method for each pattern and yarn to make your project look great : )
+Abby Normal My pleasure 😊
quality content!! pure and educational and easy to follow, beautifully presented, THANK YOU! never doing the ch3 again :D
I watch this over, and over, and OVER! Thanks for this video. I subscribed. :-)
i am so happy you showed how to get rid of those nasty gaps .I LOVE IT THANK YOU SO MUCH !!! LOVE YOUR VIDEOS !!!
Amazing! I unraveled a scarf half way threw so I could try the second method and it changed the look completely. Thanks for the video 😊
+sweetvictoria1987 Awesome! Happy to hear about your success 😊
It seems the single crochet + chain looks the nicest and easiest and thanks for the idea
+Rottiemom67 😊 I like that a lot too
I knew about the chain two instead of ch three, but the other two tips are even better!! Thank you and greetings from Argentina!
+Cecilia Miranda Humeres I love them too. Argentina...awesome! 😊
This is a brilliant technic, i’ve tried it and it looks great! Thank you so much for this tutorial.

This is brilliant, as others have already said! That second technique looks fantastic. I'm going to try that one. Thank you!
Great video. Twenty years ago I switched to knitting because the gap and uneven edges drove me crazy... I'm a little OCD anyway! Wow, love the look of the sc+ch1
+Momomum 😊
As a beginner crocheter I've used the sc + 1 chain as a turn ever since I first saw your video. Those gaps just made me nuts. Thanks so much for the tip.
Thanks for teaching an old dog a new trick.
+Sherry Klepper 😊 You are welcome
This is brilliant! Very helpful and looks very neat, especially your 3rd option. I love it! I practiced doing it many times and feel comfortable now doing it this way. Thank you so much!
Good job. The standing double crochet is my favorite way to eliminate the chain 3's or whichever stitch is required. Thanks for sharing!
+Rh Ri Your welcome. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment 😊
Thank you. You taught an old dog a new trick. I will be sharing this.
I'm so glad it helped you today +Lucky2balady! Thanks for sharing :)

Very helpful! I like the second option the best.
I’m so in love with the last stitch thank you for sharing 🦋🦋🦋🦋
The single crochet and chain one is probably my favorite- I’ve tried a couple of times to do the standing double crochet and while it looks good, I struggle to keep them uniform and wrap the big loop. It’s a happy middle for sure!
I think the second one was the best . thanks
I discovered that after I'd been using the no-turning-chain dc for a while. I've been using the sc+ch1 method more recently. Glad you enjoyed the video!
this video is a God send know i finally get it. i was so frustrated with the gaps.
+rmatadtxnb Yay! So glad it helped 😊 I don't like the ugly gaps either.
Great tutorial! Great options! Thank you!
+Thea Stewart Glad you found this helpful 😊
Very much so!
You are so clever! I like the sc ch 1 method.
+Anita De Clerck I admit, I didn’t create the sc + ch1 method but can’t remember where I picked it up. Nonetheless, it’s great!
Have tried the SC +ch1 on a few projects now. Love it!
I learned to crochet from my mother when I was young. She called it a False Double Crochet. :) I never knew it had another name. I never chained three. I use false doubles.
Thank you so much for this. I have been using something similar but I love the single crochet chain one substitute. I will be using that from now on.
+Valerie Comeau Excellent choice! I like that one too. I'm so glad you found this video helpful 😊
Love this tutorial! It changed how I crochet. ❤
This is a fantastic video!! I love it!! Thank you so very much for making this video!!!!
Thank you 😊 I’m glad this was helpful
Thank You sooo much. Just wish I’d seen this before I started my current shawl project that leaves one edge without a border. Hate those holes! What I can’t figure out is-why don’t pattern writers include any of these methods? Any one of your ways is preferable to the 3 chain up pattern method.
Thanks very much. I hope to try the last method soon and will show my group which meets every week.

I just tried the single crochet then chain 1. It works. I alway had trouble with the DC but this tip works. Thanks!!
Thanks for sharing this. I like the sc-ch combination.
Thank you so much, this will give my work a finer look.
+Ruth Baez You're welcome. Glad I could help!
I love this thank you for showing us. Anna form the UK.
Love this, thank you!!! I've been crocheting for probably more years than you have been around . . . :D and I have never seen this technique. Thank you so much!!! I will do it always from now on. :)
Glad to be of help 😊 Enjoy!
Very informative, and helpful...I had no idea!
Thanks for the wonderful info. I'm fairly new to crocheting and I run into so many things that don't look right but I'm not sure what is wrong...

Excellent suggestion. I’ll have to try that myself!
Just learned this after always doing regular no turning and it's a game changer!!
The single crochet + dc i love .
Excellent teaching thank you👍🏻
I like the single crochet change 1
Thank you. I like the 2nd one best.
Great video! Just in case do you have a video showing how to do this but in circles ?? Or for example for a rounded project?
Thank you for the tips. It’s gas really helped me.. ❤❤❤
great, thanks I like the idea of the second style

My grandma used to crochet with fine thread and she did the third method all the time! I just wish my grandma was still alive to help me with this!! Anyway I am familiar with that method but I find it very hard to do.

Hello. Thank you very much for this great tutorial. I would like to ask if the nonturning method still counts the same as a chain 3? I am going to give this a try in my current project. Thank you. Sharon
Yes it does, Sharon.
Wow! Nice!
Thanks what a big help you are
Great tutorial. Thank you.

I also use a stitch marker to hold that first
That can be helpful too
Thank you for sharing. Very helpful
+Betty Vogel Great! You’re welcome 😊
love this, thank you!
Thank you for your rapid response to my question. That pesky hole with the chain 3 method has always bothered me. I am OCD.
Hope you find the solution that’s right for you! I use a few different ones and choose based on the project.
Well done video. Very clear. How do you do this with a treble crochet?
These are awesome! 🤗
I just was complaining about this in my last video! I will try your suggestions for our next pillow slip cover to see what suits my project!
Do you hav a RUclips channel?
Brilliant!
For the no turning chain DC method, do you do your next normal dc into the 1st or 2nd chain from the hook? I assume the 2nd since the chainless dc is substituting the ch3 you would no otherwise?
