Wow this is such an awesome technique! Never would have thought of doing it this way! Would you use the same method if you are working in single crochets, or is this just a double crochet thing?
Yes, this is just for double crochet and half-double crochet. Single crochet doesn't need this, just need to make sure you start right at the edge stitch of a new row.
Does it matter which way you turn your work for the next row. I am incorporating your technique but am still creating divits on my edges. Love, love, love learning from you! Thank you!!!!❤
Yes, I didn't even think of mentioning that because when I made that video I had never seen anyone turn the other way round where the yarn comes to the front in turning. It is very hard to make it even if you turn that way, I tried it. You need to tighten the yarn but easily tighten too much, or not enough, and both create an uneven edge,
@TuulaMaaria thank you so much for your reply! I watched your video and you turn your work clockwise with the yarn in back. I was turning counterclockwise but still keeping the yarn in the back. Idk, maybe it's my tension then. Thank you again and I love learning from you!😊
This is by far the best video I have ever watched regarding how to handle crochet edges. I agree with the viewer below: The edges feel more substantial without losing any stretching. It has been years of trying so many different tips to make those edges neat and clean. If only I had come across your video sooner!! I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR YOUR VIDEO LESSON! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
Hello, I hope you can help me. I'm new to crochet and just learned the DC stitch. After crocheting several rows I wasn't very happy with the way it looked because it had gaps on the sides and also the edges were not as straight as the SC and 1/2 DC stitches I had just learned. The instructions asked me to chain 10 + 3 extra stitches. So I start with a slip knot, chain 13 and then the last 3 stitches of the chain will be the first DC stitch because I am told to skip the first 3 and make my first DC into the 4th chain. I looked on the internet to try and find another method to make the edges look better and came across your video. I am a bit confused though as to how to start your technique from the very beginning, with the foundation chain. Do I start your technique after I have made the first 10 chains and then instead of chaining an extra 3, I will try your technique? Or do I do the first row like normal (making the first DC into the 4th chain until the end of the first row and then start your technique at the end of the first row before turning the row and continue on with your video)? Otherwise, are you able to make a video showing your technique from the beginning starting with the slip knot and the foundation chain? Thanks for any help you can provide! Your edges look very straight and I really hope I can learn your way of making the DC stitch. Best, Lisa
Hello Lisa, sorry it has taken this long to answer - I do try to answer comments every 3 days but time goes so fast! With this technique I would do as you suggest, make the very first row after your chain the way you have the basic instructions for and then start this from the 2nd row on. At times I have been wondering if I should make some basic tutorials but then decided not to because there seems to be so many of them! But you are not the first one asking, maybe I should consider that! Hope this helps! _Tuula
Thanks for this tutorial. I’ve tried several different methods and this is the one that works for me. Already I’ve eliminated the wonky edges on a baby hat. Thanks again.
Excellent presentation! I assume this would work with the higher stitches (triple, quadruple) also. I always forget how many extra chains to make at the end of the row for each stitch type. Do you have a quick way of remembering?
Yes, works for those bigger stitches too. The number of chains can depend on the yarn used so for high stitches I try it out each time, to see what amount looks best.
@@TuulaMaaria Let me see if I get it No matter what the pattern calls for I use your double crochet technique at the end and the beginning of each row?
@@patriciamalloy5501 Yes, as long as you are working with double crochets. This does not affect the number of stitches on the row because the two stitches at the end count as one.
How lovely hon! My mother did this sort of crochet, and I still have some of her lovelies. She had an interesting technique you might find funny. For young children, especially fidgety ones, she left open holes near the corners for little thumbs to find on her snuggly afghans. Thank you for carrying on such a wonderful tradition.
Thank you for reaching out! That is such an interesting thing to do for afghans! But it can be a good idea for a bit bigger children, they may want to hold on to the afghan through the holes :)
I have been crocheting over 55 yard and really don’t like my edges. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I will be using this technique from now on.👏👏👏💕
When making and pillow cover you have to single crochet in the stitch two times can you double crochet in the same stitch or put two single crochet in the same stitch
Single crochet goes a bit differently, I wouldn't put two stitches in the same stitch. Just chain one for turning and then always have the first stitch of the new row in the same stitch where the chain is. I really should make a video about that, several people have asked about that! 😊
Thank you so much! After struggling many times, this one worked for me. However,as mentioned earlier, would appreciate the tutorial right from the start for us beginners.☺️🙏
Wow I never knew that! I feel like unraveling my cat blanket now you've taught me how to rectify the wiggly edges. Many thanks for the video, I am learning new things all the time.
OMG…IT WORKS!😲😲 I have tried so many of these techniques and none of them have given me that straight edge. This one does😱😱 Thank you, Thank you,Thank you💕💕 you are brilliant ❣️
Great tip but how can I use it with half double croshet? And even worse how can this work when I have one row hdc and the next sc and again hdc, sc ...... I can think a solution for a pattern like this. Please help me if you can😕
I have an "unofficial" unedited video about half double crochets that I made as an answer to this same question, ruclips.net/video/I8xZDuP1Za8/видео.html With single crochets it is important that you always make the first stitch of the row into the same stitch where you turning chain stitch is, to avoid holes. There is no problem in alternating the stitches and getting a straight edge 😊
I'm so grateful for this, after years of struggle I had tried every other tip and trick to get even edges and eliminate holes. This is the one that WORKS! The entire fabric feels better. The edges feel more substantial (without losing any stretch), such that a separate edging won't be necessary as often. Thank you, I love this!
Single crochet is easier. You chain 1 for turning and always make sure you put the first stitch of the row into the very first stitch, where the chain is.
@@TuulaMaaria Really?! Every pattern I have with single crochet says to skip the first chain below the hook and start in the next one. No wonder I always have holes in my work.
I'm just starting this and for whatever reason I'm having the hardest time with holding the yarn. I wanna just go at it with a little more speed but I struggle so much. I keep practicing its just hard
Just a suggestion - there was no YT when I started crochet, so I pretty much just followed the books and such. I have a hook grip and yarn tension-ing hold that I've never seen in a YT video. Play around with holding the hook and yarn in a way that feels better to you. If you don't copy the videos on how they do a slip knot, hold the hook, or hold the yarn, as long s it works for you, it works. I have a modified hold of the hook - modified knife hold (just holding it like I would a table knife, and I just hold the yarn loosely, with tension provided by my thumb/index/middle fingers, the other fingers just curl into my palm around the yarn. I can hold my project with my off hand and tension the yarn, while moving the hook with my thumb as a guide.
@@young.nugget I made a little video to demonstrate was I was (badly) trying to explain - but it was pure awful. I hope you have fun trying different holds for everything.

It has been years of trying so many different tips to make those edges neat and clean. If only I had come across your video sooner!! I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR YOUR VIDEO LESSON! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
Thank you, I'm so glad to hear it was helpful 💚💚 I remember how happy I was when I found this tip many years ago!
Thank you so much this is very helpfull, you are so talented🤩
Thank you! 😊
Thank you. I've seen other videos demo but yours is by far the best and easiest. Thank you again.
Thank you, happy to hear that!
Best,
Lisa
Hello Lisa, sorry it has taken this long to answer - I do try to answer comments every 3 days but time goes so fast!
With this technique I would do as you suggest, make the very first row after your chain the way you have the basic instructions for and then start this from the 2nd row on.
At times I have been wondering if I should make some basic tutorials but then decided not to because there seems to be so many of them! But you are not the first one asking, maybe I should consider that!
Hope this helps!

Thank you, I am a new crocheter. How wonderful to have a friend on RUclips to give me this great tip for my first project! ❤️🇨🇦
That's great to hear Carol! (Sorry some comments had been hidden, I'm now finding lots of 2-week-old ones!!) Happy crocheting!
Wow.. this is great help, thank you!
Thank you for showing this very fantastic way to crochet straight sides.
Thank you !
That’s amazing! Thank you for the information!
Glad you like it!
Thanks for this tutorial. I’ve tried several different methods and this is the one that works for me. Already I’ve eliminated the wonky edges on a baby hat. Thanks again.
That's great to hear!
@@TuulaMaaria
Let me see if I get it
No matter what the pattern calls for I use your double crochet technique at the end and the beginning of each row?
Thank you thank you thank you so much for this video❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Most welcome 😊
I have been crocheting over 55 yard and really don’t like my edges. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I will be using this technique from now on.👏👏👏💕
Wonderful!
Ok l will try to do that if l can remember how to do that thanks a lot
Thank you so much! After struggling many times, this one worked for me. However,as mentioned earlier, would appreciate the tutorial right from the start for us beginners.☺️🙏
Thank you! Just picked up how to crochet during this quarantine time. No wonder my edges are always not straight 😅
Glad to hear it was useful! RUclips seems to be affected by the present situation too, many comments from days back are only appearing now! Stay safe!
Many many thanks and many many blessings to you for taking the time to show us how to crochet . My project looks much better thanks to you! ;)
That's great to hear, I'm happy my videos have been useful!
is this the same for the first row of stitches? like should i put two double crochets into the last stitch on the first row?
I normally start using this from the second row on.
@@TuulaMaaria how did you do the first row?
Wow. How wonderful. Thank you so much. This will make me much happier when crocheting. No lumps on each end. Life will be better.
That's great! :)
Sheer genius!
Wow, thank you!
Wow I never knew that! I feel like unraveling my cat blanket now you've taught me how to rectify the wiggly edges. Many thanks for the video, I am learning new things all the time.
That's great to hear! Don't unravel it though, use this for your next project and make a border for the blanket to hide edges :)
Yes I will keep it. I'm sure the homeless cats will not mind the wiggle!
Wonderful!
OMG…IT WORKS!😲😲 I have tried so many of these techniques and none of them have given me that straight edge. This one does😱😱 Thank you, Thank you,Thank you💕💕 you are brilliant ❣️
So glad to heat it worked for you! 💜
Thank you! My hole-edges always bothered me :)
Thank you, great it helped!
It really works! I just tested it. Thank you very much! 🌹I am absolute beginner in crosheting and it is very useful for me❤️
Wonderful, great to hear! 😊
Great tip but how can I use it with half double croshet? And even worse how can this work when I have one row hdc and the next sc and again hdc, sc ...... I can think a solution for a pattern like this. Please help me if you can😕
I have an "unofficial" unedited video about half double crochets that I made as an answer to this same question, ruclips.net/video/I8xZDuP1Za8/видео.html
With single crochets it is important that you always make the first stitch of the row into the same stitch where you turning chain stitch is, to avoid holes.
Glad it helped! Yes, I was very happy too when I found this way of doing it several years ago 😊
How do I keep the edges straight if I am doing all single crochet?
Single crochet is easier. You chain 1 for turning and always make sure you put the first stitch of the row into the very first stitch, where the chain is.
@@TuulaMaaria Really?! Every pattern I have with single crochet says to skip the first chain below the hook and start in the next one. No wonder I always have holes in my work.
@@ElizabethT45 Oh really! At least Pinterest is full of instructions that stress putting the first stitch in the very start.
Thank you so much for this tip. I’m using this tip right now and love how the edges turned out. I’ve tried other tips and this one by far is the best
That's great to hear! 😊
I'm just starting this and for whatever reason I'm having the hardest time with holding the yarn. I wanna just go at it with a little more speed but I struggle so much. I keep practicing its just hard
Yes, it can take a while to find the position that is best for you! Hope you will get used to it 😊
Just a suggestion - there was no YT when I started crochet, so I pretty much just followed the books and such.
@@goldengryphon thank for the tip
@@young.nugget I made a little video to demonstrate was I was (badly) trying to explain - but it was pure awful. I hope you have fun trying different holds for everything.
I'm making a scrap blanket but want the straight edges. This so easy. 44 years crochet never thought about it. Thank you
That's great to hear! Also great that we always learn new things! 🙂
Like this the best
Thank you so much! I am just learning how to crochet when I have been ripping out row after row trying to figure out why my edges were off. I either increased or decreased rows of had "bubble" edges. This fixed my problem instantly!
So glad to hear it is useful! Enjoy crocheting 😊
Please don't mind me & my BOOKMARK @1:30.
Thanks 🤗🌼
Your own bookmarks don't show to others 😊
Thank you Thank you! I’m crocheting a project with double crochet stitches I’ve had to take it down too many times to count because wider and not strain stitches at the end at all, this video is right on time!
That's great it helped you!

You absolute genius!!!!!!! This has been a bugbear with me for ages leaning holes at the sides and jagged edges, yet lots of the professionals still do it on RUclips. Thank you fir your very much appreciated tips
That's lovely to hear! 💗
I am sooooo grateful to you!!! Watched a ton of 'how to's" for straight edges, practiced them and discarded only to go looking for more. When I found your page it was the end of the search! Still a little shaky on how to start the double crochets when I have chained on my length to keep the correct amount to work for pattern, but I'll keep at it. BYW No one really starts at chaining, they all start at several rows up. Thank you, again and again and again!
@@barbedstar6480 Oh great, enjoy this type of crochet now!
FINALLY
Thank you so much for this video! I thought the edges of my afghans were doomed forever! I can't wait to try this! xoxo
Lovely to hear, enjoy making your next afghan!
