I was going through a divorce when Voodoo Lounge came out. I was playing it a lot when my kids who were 2 and 4, would stay the night with me. My 2 year old son would sing Out Of Tears with me. He’d repeat the words like, let it out, let it in. It was so cute that I video taped it.
25 years later, my son unexpectedly died and my daughter suggested we play that song at his funeral. It was absolutely gut wrenching and I cried like a baby.
That song was meant to be in my life. In 94’ as an ode to my divorce… being out of tears….then it became an ode to my son….out of tears from crying over his death. It’s a big song for me.
    Great you tube channel.

So sorry for the loss of your son. I hope that one day hearing the song will bring back memories of a beautiful boy and give you joy. I've never lost a child, but I think whoever said time heals all wounds probably didn't either. I used to sing You Got Me Rocking with my daughter when she was little, and I can't imagine what it would be like to hear it if I lost her.

VL brings great memories to me, my late father was a super fan since he was 15 y.o. in 1973 through the single Angie, and me and my siblings grew up with the greatest band ever. I'm from the Netherlands and was 8 y.o. when VL was released, my parents went to the first show at the Giants Stadium in '94. It was their first foreign Stones show and the first time they we're without their kids for little over a week.
The album was on three times a day at full volume, for three to four weeks, as always with dad when a new Stones album came out and the same for Keith solo.
It helped turning me into a fan as well. The love for the Stones will stay with me forever !

  • @haljasonfoster2169
    @haljasonfoster2169 15 дней назад +9

The funny thing about VL is that so many people agree it is too long but if you start discussing which songs to leave off, at least in my circles, nobody can agree. Tracks like Mean Disposition are frequently cited as a generic rocker or a classic rocker depending on who you are talking to. I would argue that even beyond Satanic Majesties this is the most divisive Stones album. This gets overlooked because of the nature of the discussion and what divides people. I would not have left a track off because we all have the option to listen to what grabs us and ignore what does not."With an indolent air and insolent stare" What a great line from NF. Jugular and Brand New car strike me as a cool funk hybrid or Stones meets Prince vibe. Album gets an A from myself.

If Voodoo Lounge had come out in 1973, it would be ranked as one of the greatest Stones albums. We had tickets to see this stadium tour in Philadelphia. Nothing but serious buckets of rain that night so we turned around and came home. The next morning a stray long-haired grey kitten showed up on our property. We named her Voodoo. Wonderful little critter and I still miss her. We may lost out on the concert but we did find Voodoo.

Justin and co. I am 63. i saw the Stones in 1976 twice, inc the Knebworth gig. When they got back together in 1989, I just didn't trust them. I thought they were trying too hard to appeal to a more mainstream audience. And when Bill left, that was it for me - it was all over. They just weren't relevant anymore. But your channel has enticed me back again and I have adjusted to the Darryl Jones era and am now just as huge a fan I ever was. I just love the live output from 89 to 2007 from Flashpoint and Atlantic City though to Copacabana Beach. So this is a huge thank you for what you are doing - and please - keep up the good work !

Interesting as always. A couple of points though:
When Scott mentions the harpsichord on 'New Faces' (great track by the way!), he says "Brian Jones", but all those mid-'60s classics - 'Play With Fire', 'Lady Jane', 'Take It Or Leave It', 'Ride On Baby', 'Yesterday's Papers' - featured the vastly over-looked Jack Nitzsche playing the instrument rather than Brian.
He also seems a little snobbish about Rick Rubin because he's not a musician and "just a listener". Andrew Loog Oldham was someone who did wonders just by "listening" (despite ludicrous later claims that he never did anything), not to mention the late great Sam Phillips at Sun. My point is, a producer doesn't HAVE to be a musician like George Martin or Don Was (or whoever) to be a great one.
Keep up the great work guys! 😊

I just listened to this fantastic album from Sparks Will Fly on, inspired by your comments Scott 😉. Funny thing, years ago I heard the live version of Sparks and Keith is just amazing on that, so a renewable appreciation of this song was born!
What I overall still love about the album is that the guitars are just all over the place. Many many fills and licks, and of course the beatiful and rich sounding acoustic guitar as another layer/texture or as a lead. Just like they did from the Brown Sugar era and on. The acoustic never sounded the same after Bridges. Until Hackney of course!
And agree on your Ronnie is shining on this album. Very very focused and tasty playing from him on several levels.
Nice to hear both of you that this was Keith firing all cilinders together with Mick. And Charlie is just amazing. He never had a better sound since then. Very very tasteful and a powerhouse!
Also nice info about Mick recording his harp on the two mics. Very interesting.

Love the interview. To answer the quest ... Yep The album got very good reviews at the time of release ... except for 'Time Magazine' which panned it. There was a lot of buildup / hype to this album. Steel Wheels had a massive, incredible tour that had a soundtrack tagged to it which was The Steel Wheels album. 1994 had the ALBUM ... which also had the partnering tour. The album was initially the focus. It got great coverage and many were interested. VH1 was all about it ... and MTV still covered it for the most part. It was played a lot on Rock radio (naturally) and even once every blue moon main stream played something. 'Love is Strong' video became a showcase song / staple on VH1. It was a major year for them in their history and the album was well received by fans and critics alike.

  • @scottlbroco
    @scottlbroco 3 дня назад +1

Very nice insight as always, Justin !
Voodoo Lounge is my favorite Rolling Stones album from the years after Tattoo You. My favorite Voodoo Lounge songs are Love is Strong, I Go Wild and Thru and Thru.
I strongly agree with you that the album's power is diluted somewhat by having too many songs. This isn't Exile on Main Street, after all. Twelve tracks would've been ideal. For me, Suck on the Jugular, Blinded by Rainbows and (as much as I like the groove) Brand New Car are all inferior Stones material.
A band of the Stones caliber can make a mediocre song sound good and a pretty good song sound great. Despite my first impressions of some post Tattoo You songs, time reveals that there's something lacking in some later period songwriting, despite the magic the Stones have as a band.
Songwriters have a limited number of great songs in them; the better the songwriter, the more great songs they're able to create - and Mick and Keith are the most collaborative great songwriting team in rock history, imo.
During their first decade, Keith was unquestionably their driving creative force. Mick certainly sparked the creation of some of their greatest songs - Sympathy for the Devil, You Can't Always Get What You Want and Brown Sugar - but most frequently in those days, Keith came up with a riff or melody, and maybe some lyrics or a phrase and presented it to Mick to develop with him.
Up through the mighty Exile on Main Street, Keith was a fantastic and prolific songwriter. After that, his heroin addiction was their biggest obstacle in the creative process. Mick developed as a guitarist so he was able to write songs when he could no longer rely on Keith, but it's never been the same.
The weakest post Tattoo You Stones songs feel like they weren't inspired so much as product that Mick needed to check off a list, and Keith's creative process has been slower and sometimes less original, even after he stopped being a junkie.
The BAND, however, has always been great, with plenty of magic in how they work together in their post creative peak. Every Stones album from Undercover to Hackney Diamonds has a few essential songs, but there's a difference between a very good album and an essential one.
Every album by the Rolling Stones is worth having, some more than others, and Voodoo Lounge is one that stands out for me.
Thanks for reminding me how much I like this album, Justin !
    Scott

Hackney Diamonds is OK for 80 year old Mick and Keith but it isn’t that good. I even like lesser Stones albums like Black And Blue, Undercover, Emotional Rescue, and even Dirty Work better. @@flyingburritobro68 HD is an excellent album with lots of vibes from back the 70's but packaged in a modern sound. The diversity of the songs is making HD interesting to listen to. It's the first album in a very very long time that I personally listen thru the whole album without skipping any songs. You mention Elton John and Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga made an fantastic appearance on Sweet sounds of heaven which gave the song a depth and wonderful feel to it. Her voice and the way she interpreted the song is fantastic. As for Elton John I think he was just around at the time and played on the album. I don't think he stood out in any way but he wasn't bad either. I felt like they'd used some of their best ideas for those albums (if 'Evening Gown' had been a Stones song, it would be considered a minor classic!).

Exactly Scott. i felt the same way as well at the time. i didn't get it.The only good tracks on that Voodoo Lounge album was Mean Disposition and Blinded by Rainbows.that's it.but all the other tracks bombed.this was a time in the 1990's when the Stones signed a contract with Corporate Virgin Billionaire Richard Branson for 25 million.a Big Deal at the time. Voodoo Lounge was a Corporate Album.alot of them tracks didn't sound like the Rolling Stones. tracks like Moon is up.Suck on the jugular.Sparks will fly.Out of Tears.New faces and Brand New Car. really.it just wasn't a Rolling Stones Album.they ran through these tracks in a hurry. they put aside the Glimmer Twins.and became the Corporate Twins. it was the 1990's.

An outstanding album with outstanding tracks. When the Stones were promoting it they came to Brazil for a series of incredible shows in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, so I, together with some friends, went for one they performed in Maracanã Stadium in Rio. All I can say is that we danced, jumped and screamed like mad dogs during the whole show. After that we all went to Copacabana beach to refresh ourselves in the middle of that night. An unforgetble rock 'n' roll night, man!

Jagger had said CD's were expensive and felt that with the expanded length of CD's and the retail cost, they would include some "experimental' tracks that would normally not make the cut for an album. More value for money. Funny thing is that when you ask Stones fans which songs should've been deleted, few agree. Certainly something like Moon Is Up wouldn't have made a typical single album length. Gotta disagree with Scott about Freejack - Jagger (and I'm a huge Jagger fan, even in movies - I even liked Ned Kelly) is the worst part of Freejack...lol. I think Out Of Tears is an amazing ballad and one of Ron Woods greatest most melodic and memorable solos. You didn't discuss Blinded By Rainbows, which many hate, but I think is a fabulous song. VL actually has many wonderful ballads and great rockers like you pointed out. Pretty well rounded "Rolling Stones" album, which is what they were shooting for.

@@HangFireStonesPodcast So love your channel - your work on The Stones is fantastic, and unique and important - love it. Mick really did say that back then. Must've been an interview - was definitely in print. I'll have to go thru my vast archives but so much. But he did say that CD's were expensive and with the extended length was an opportunity to include things that wouldn't normally make the cut. More experimental material. To me it seemed obvious (though I don't remember him mentioning song titles) it would've been like Brand New Car and Moon Is Up. Maybe even Thru and Thru though Keith wouldn've thought otherwise. The fun part is in Stones community groups there's never a consensus on what songs should've been dropped. Anyway I'll try to find it. Best, Alan

I always appreciate videos with Scott! The both of you need some type of recurring podcast together to discuss random Stones songs - you are both so knowledgable and play off of each other very well
Voodoo Lounge is such a solid album that unfortunately gets overlooked. Is it a bit bloated? Yes, but any album with YGMR, Thru and Thru, Out of Tears, Love Is Strong, Sparks Will Fly is a good one. VL is without a doubt a showcase for Charlie.
My Album Ranking (Don't let it fool you, I still quite like ABB!):
    Let It Bleed
    Sticky Fingers
    Some Girls
    Tattoo You
    Exile On Main St.
    Goats Head Soup
    It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll
    Beggars Banquet
    Aftermath (US/UK)
    Out of Our Heads (US)
    Black and Blue
    Emotional Rescue
    Between The Buttons (US/UK)
The Rolling Stones / Englands Newest Hitmakers
    - Voodoo Lounge -
    Steel Wheels
    Undercover
    The Rolling Stones, Now!
    December’s Children (And Everybody’s)
    12x5 / No.2
    Dirty Work
    Hackney Diamonds
    Bridges To Babylon
    Their Satanic Majesties Request
    Blue and Lonesome
    A Bigger Bang

My exact sentiments......30 Years? I feel old. To those who always interject "(an album) is too long", that sentiment in this day and age is silly. Make a "playlist" or an CDr if still capable with the songs you want. Maybe you would even prefer one of the B-sides for your Voodoo Lounge listening experience. There are wealth of outtakes and extra material that have been available for years. I listen to all of it still. Love that "Ivy League" appeared with vocals some 4 years ago.....

way to go, nice to see/hear. Great job. glad to see this and well presented for Stones fans.
A very diversified album with their modern and old twists.
Blending in the newer (post 80's) Stones sound.
Musically fantastic as it should be closely listened to, but minus a few of the drum sounds.
Lyrics are somewhat weaker "on a few songs", no surprise, and nothing new..
That dropped my listening time for them.
But then again, I will still take it all!!
Will continue to say Out of Tears, is one of their brilliant songs. It is all put together for me.
Will one day get to this album for a review from me.
I do think a discussion for a deep detail insight comparison should be made on the producers' approach sounds and styles.
What does each style Producer bring to it, specifically. A sound comparison needed.
    cheers

I'm back again and for the sake of diplomacy I'll put it this way.
Out of Voodoo Lounge, Undercover and It's Only Rock'n'roll when I play the cds ( google that kids) IORNR is the only album I don't skip tracks.
The first 3 tracks on VL gave me everything I wanted to hear.
The title track from Undercover is brilliant and innovative.
So I'll leave you with this pleasant conundrum.
You get a call at 2am in the morning.
    It's Keith.
First he says I've just killed Rick Rubin.
Secondly he says I want you to create an album with only 1 track from every album we've ever recorded.
For that you will receive 5% on all sales and Rick Rubin buried in your backyard.
    Deal?
