The first six Sabbath albums absolutely set all benchmarks for heavy rock. They moved beyond the Cream / Blue Cheer / Hendrix hard rock into the heaviest style of all before it became the “heavy metal” category. Nobody even tried to out-heavy Sabbath until the 80’s. Sabbath alone defined heavy.

Piledriver, Hello, Quo, On The Level, Blue For You, Quo Live. That 6 album run from between 1972 and 1977 by Status Quo. But having said that, that run of Sabbath's is like the Magna Carta of heavy music.
Sabbath, Zeppelin, Iron Maiden are all classic first 6 album run counting on from starting at their first record. Can you do a Sabbath Stones episode of top 20 Tony Martin Black Sabbath songs? And a Sabbath Stones episode of "If you could bring 1 burnt CD of Tony Martin Black Sabbath songs to a desert island that you would be trapped on forever, which songs would be on it"?
The Rhino high fidelity series is very good. The Sabbath one was cut from the original US tapes. It was limited to 5000 numbered copies. It sold out so fast they did another 5000 unnumbered copies. So far they have done about 25 albums. They stated more Sabbath will be coming.
While there are other bands and artists with excellent 6 LP runs (Zeppelin, Bowie, Zappa, AC/DC, Maiden, Kiss, Aerosmith, Kansas, Budgie, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, EJ, ZZ Top, etc.) i believe that, yes, BLACK SABBATH has the best 6 LP run of all. ⚡
Bob Dylan and Radiohead are the only artists to release three MASTERPIECES back-to-back-to-back. Bringing It All Back Home (1965), Highway 61 Revisited (1965), and Blonde on Blonde (1966). The Bends (1995), OK Computer (1999), and Kid A (2000).
Some great one's mentioned, especially Rush. The entirety of Free's catalogue, all six studio albums. Thin Lizzy - any 6 run from their entire output, right from their debut. The first six albums from Queen, after that they start to lose it a bit, then a sharp descent after "The Game" (which is still a very good album) Any 6 run from the Budgie's 70's albums. Status Quo - Dog of Two Head, Piledriver, Hello, Quo, On the Level, Blue For You ZZ Top - first six albums, counting Fandango! as it's half live but half studio as well. Lynyrd Skynyrd - First five albums plus "First and Last", which even though was just a posthumous release of previously unreleased tracks, it did come out in 1978, the following year from their last album, the year of the crash. So at a push you could see it as their final statement, and it is absolutely brilliant and possibly my favourite of all their albums. The LP also contains their greatest ever song, "Was I Right or Wrong", no doubt about it. Steeleye Span - First six albums Joni Mitchell - any six run up to, and including "Hejira", her eighth record. Rory Gallagher - any 6 run from his debut up to and including "Jinx" Pity Gillan had only 5 official albums, because they're all magnificent, and there's no reasoning to presume that a sixth one wouldn't have been just as good. Others that didn't quite make it: The Stones - the best 4 album run in rock history, but the ones either side aren't up to the mark Jethro Tull - "This Was" - though it is good - at one end and "War Child" - not so good, save a couple of brilliant tracks - at the other, bring it down a bit too much UFO - All five 70's Schenker albums only, "No Place to Run" has it's moments but in truth it's a serious drop in quality from those immediately earlier records. Pink Floyd - "Obscured by Clouds" just good, not great. Deep Purple/ The Who - a bit fragmented, pity Wishbone Ash - first five superb, just falling short Little Feat - bloody fantastic first four albums, the fifth merely good, then average Groundhogs and Ten Years After - I only know five records each from these two bands, though they're all chronological, and they're all awesome.
Pink Floyd easily there..... "Meddle" was already a masterpiece..... "Echoes" is one of the greatest tracks ever made..... some would argue even "Atom Heart Mother" was already a genius record
Great show as always guys. I agree that the first six Sabbath albums is the strongest in any metal catalogue. The six you also rattled off in the DIO/Gillan/Hughes/Martin era is also excellent. Even though you're lukewarm with the 'Tyr' album I see it as a string of 7. I liked the way they ventured into Viking territory with this offering. On a trivia side note a Brazilian hard rock/metal band named 'Chronicode' does an incredible job with the song "Anno Mundi." Their vids are on RUclips. Mari "Elbereth" Figueiredo the singer in that band is also one hell of a looker. 😍
One of the best 6 album runs no doubt. "The Beatles" must be in the running here too(Rubber Soul to Abbey Road) BUT "Queen" and "Rush" have an excellent 7 album run. "Queen" to "Jazz". "Fly By Night" to "Moving Pictures". Hard to beat those.
Rush, Sabbath, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, King Crimson, The Strawbs, Yes, Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, Wishbone Ash..... all bands with unbelievable long string of early records...... almost every record a masterpiece in their early discography
Zepplin Queen Death Thin Lizzy starting at Nightlife Maiden (I don't like Seventh Son but Somewhere in Time is my favorite Maiden Album closely followed by Killers) Rush starting at 2112
Sometimes I feel like the hate for that is very reflexive. Like you have to be against the wimpy ballad because you're a metal guy. I would take Changes over their psych/stoner ballads like Planet Caravan or Solitude. Those are super boring
The discography of Glenn Danzig from 1982-1994 Misfits-Walk Among us Misfits-Earth AD Samhain-Initium Samhain-November Coming Fire Danzig 1 Danzig 2: Lucifuge Danzig 3: How The Gods Kill Danzig 4p Plus all the ep’s, live albums, singles, and compilations in between.
I'd say so. Runner ups :To me, Voïvod's first 7 (up to Outer Limits) is a very special run. Also Slayer's first 6 (up to Seasons) if we count the EP. Could even stretch to Divine Intervention which is terrific as well, but somewhat underrated.
I agree that Sabbath has the best first 6 album run. For a non-first 6 album run, I would say Yes. From The Yes Album to Going For The One is hard to beat
I think it's safe to say that every metal and hard rock band is influenced in some way and owes a great debt to the first six Black Sabbath albums. If you were building a castle of heavy metal, they would be the blueprints.
@@jimmypage2843it was probably Randy. The 1st 3 notes of his solo on Over the Mountain are the song Black Sabbaths 1st 3 notes. Just played a half step up.
Techical Ecstacy is great because of one superior song. It has one of Tony's best guitar solos and it also recalls the doomy sound of earlier BS, even if for a short duration. Love that song.
Priest is one of my faves, but they don't go to the Six Albums for me. Wether I'd start with "Sad Wings" or "Stained Class", "Point of Entry" kills it for me. I like three Songs of the Album. I can't be inside a great Six Album Run for me. I'm not that big on a lot Maiden's stuff, to be honest. Out of the first seven I like only three Albums start to finish: "Number of the Beast", "Somewhere in Time" and "Seventh Son". Nevermore would be candidate for me, you either start with the Debut or "Politics" or just make it all seven. The odd one is probably "Dreaming Neon Black", but I still like it.
AC/DC and Kiss are among them, I think. Bob Marley, Einstürzende Neubauten, Godflesh, The Mars Volta, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Queen, Santana, Slayer, Amon Tobin, Ulver, Suzanne Vega, Voivod, Led Zep and Frank Zappa too. And let's just not delve into the jazz stuff...
NAZARETH: Loud 'n' Proud (1973) Rampant (1974) Hair of the Dog (1975) Close Enough for Rock 'n' Roll (1976) Play 'n' the Game (1976) Expect No Mercy (1977)
To me, Ulcerate has had an almost perfect run of 7 awesome tecnical death metal albums in a row: Of Fracture and Failure (2007) Everything Is Fire (2009) The Destroyers of All (2011) Vermis (2013) Shrines of Paralysis (2016) Stare Into Death and Be Still (2020) Cutting the Throat of God (2024)
One of the best 6 album runs in rock, probably THE best album runs in metal history, period. All unique from one another, but still within the realm of defining THE BAND, for when all members stayed together. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin are probably the other ones with outstanding album runs on that scale.
RUSH almost gets there with: 1-2112, 2-Farewell to Kings, 3-Hemispheres, 4-Permanent Waves, 5-Moving Pictures. Caress of Steel (as mentioned in the vid) and Signals, tho still great, don't quite make it a 6 run homer for me. Am a long time Zep fan since the beginning, but, over time, I've come to recognize Black Sabbath as true innovators that invented an entirely new genre not really rooted that directly in anything that came before as evidenced in the incredible 1st 6 album run. For many years, they did not tend to get the recognition they deserve for this imo. Today, I still regularly listen to the entire Black Sabbath Catalogue up to Mob Rules, but it is rare now that I break out any LZ.
I gotta agree abt Priest. That 6 album run starting with Stained Class is almost as good as sabbaths run. And, i love Point of entry, which most say is the weakest, so all 6 albums are classic to me
More me it’s gotta be Rush for this. Start at the beginning, start in the mid 70s whatever. From the debut through signals every single album is perfect. Maiden comes second for this then sabbath for me
I would remove Discovery (well executed but not for me) and start with ELO 2, which might be their progiest. Everyone knows Roll Over Beethoven but Kuiama is sublime.
@@powrnapfair call. Personally, I would go with your 6, but in terms of popular opinion and hit makers, the other 6 would be a better choice. I am a big fan of In Old England Town...pure prog.

Hard to Disagree that this is the greatest six album run in history of heavy music. This band had the greatest riff master, the tightest rhythm players and the most eccentric frontman in heavy metal, which makes it my most favourite band of all time.
QUEEN! I would say the first eight Queen albums are classics. If you don't like The Game, then at least the first seven are great. Since Queen is my favorite band, I would rank higher than BS, but I like those six albums very much. Can't believe you guys didn't think of that - May and Iommi are buddies too.
Well keeping in mind the approach for this episode: 1) This is a Sabbath-centric episode & 2) BS is Pete's fave (or 2nd fave with Purple) band - you can't really expect too many other bands to be nominated here (especially when one of the panelists has "never heard an Elton John record in my life"). Just like I'm a huge Beatles fan so to me they're a no-brainer for inclusion here. And I'm not that big on Sabbath so to me those first 6 albums aren't the greatest ever run (not even close). Who does get nominated very much depends on which bands are your favorites. That's kinda obvious but perhaps easily forgotten, as some say in the comments "I can't believe you left out x"... I'd also go with Rush except Pete specified here that he's talking about the FIRST 6 albums & I'm not that crazy about the earliest Rush (same reason I'd have to exclude Purple since that early stuff to me is just so-so). However for most consecutive great albums (not necessarily including their debuts) Rush takes the prize for me...Some of my others: Kinks, Be Bop Deluxe (including the live album), Free, Genesis, Grand Funk, Jeff Beck, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Walsh, James Gang, Hot Tuna, Zeppelin, Queen and so on...
@@wolf1977 "FIRST SIX" - yes, that is why I said "Queen" and Pete is a fan, but I can't remember is Chris is. I love the Beatles, but I wouldn't say the first six for them. I like the first two albums, but they are near the bottom of Beatle albums for me.

I recall you did a series of episodes of 6 album runs in the past and I would have to strongly agree that Sabbath’s 6 album run was their best.
The first six albums from Queen, after that they start to lose it a bit, then a sharp descent after "The Game" (which is still a very good album)
Any 6 run from the Budgie's 70's albums.
Status Quo - Dog of Two Head, Piledriver, Hello, Quo, On the Level, Blue For You
ZZ Top - first six albums, counting Fandango! as it's half live but half studio as well.
Steeleye Span - First six albums
Joni Mitchell - any six run up to, and including "Hejira", her eighth record.
Rory Gallagher - any 6 run from his debut up to and including "Jinx"
Pity Gillan had only 5 official albums, because they're all magnificent, and there's no reasoning to presume that a sixth one wouldn't have been just as good.
Others that didn't quite make it:
The Stones - the best 4 album run in rock history, but the ones either side aren't up to the mark
Jethro Tull - "This Was" - though it is good - at one end and "War Child" - not so good, save a couple of brilliant tracks - at the other, bring it down a bit too much
UFO - All five 70's Schenker albums only, "No Place to Run" has it's moments but in truth it's a serious drop in quality from those immediately earlier records.
Pink Floyd - "Obscured by Clouds" just good, not great.
Deep Purple/ The Who - a bit fragmented, pity
Wishbone Ash - first five superb, just falling short
Little Feat - bloody fantastic first four albums, the fifth merely good, then average
Groundhogs and Ten Years After - I only know five records each from these two bands, though they're all chronological, and they're all awesome.
Pink Floyd as well. Not the first six but probably from Obscured by clouds to the Wall.
Pink Floyd easily there..... "Meddle" was already a masterpiece..... "Echoes" is one of the greatest tracks ever made..... some would argue even "Atom Heart Mother" was already a genius record
Queen has for me! The first 6 are pretty damn good and classic and I even add "Jazz" to that run, cuz I like that 1 a lot too.
totally agrre!
Jazz - maybe - but their first 6? Absolutely!
I’m not a big fan of Jazz side 2 but 100% agree with the first 6. So my pick is Queen’s first 6 1/2 albums. 😎
I'll put up Maiden's first 7 against anything.
Totally agreed on the Beatles & Rush. I added some others in another response. Possibly Queen - actually now that I look back on their albums: Yes!
The next Sabbath Stones episode should be about Seventh Star, that’d be great!
All of the CD boxed sets are gone. I got a vinyl set but there were only a few left!
You guys certainly having strange weather this year.
Crazy here in UK 77 degrees tomorrow here
Rush, Sabbath, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, King Crimson, The Strawbs, Yes, Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, Wishbone Ash..... all bands with unbelievable long string of early records...... almost every record a masterpiece in their early discography
Opeth's run from Still Life to Watershed is pretty awesome, but you're absolutely correct, the first 6 Sabbath albums are unbeatable
Yes, in a word!
Queen- I, II, Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, and News of the World.
Thanks for the entertaining video. Bands I love who had great 6 album runs are Budgie, UFO and Scorpions.
Great show !
We need to see Chris' music/movie libraries
Rocka Rolla is beiing rereleased with a totally new remix, from original master tapes, which Ian Hill says sounds amazing.
Zepplin
Queen
Death
Thin Lizzy starting at Nightlife
Maiden (I don't like Seventh Son but Somewhere in Time is my favorite Maiden Album closely followed by Killers)
Rush starting at 2112
Changes is fantastic!
Totally agree
Sometimes I feel like the hate for that is very reflexive. Like you have to be against the wimpy ballad because you're a metal guy. I would take Changes over their psych/stoner ballads like Planet Caravan or Solitude. Those are super boring
@@georgelamie7001 Planet Caravan is my all-time favorite Black Sabbath song. ;-) Other than that I totally agree with you.
@@georgelamie7001 I'd leave Planet Caravan and listen to Changes in solitude...

Danzig 2: Lucifuge
Danzig 3: How The Gods Kill

Plus all the ep’s, live albums, singles, and compilations in between.
UFO: Phenomenon to No Place To Run is pretty good. Scorpions: In Trance to Blackout.
Good evening from Uk Chris looking good 💯💯💯🤘🤘.
I think you can make a case for a number of other bands, but that first six Sabbath run stands tall for me.
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is their most matured and proggy recording... My fave.
Ac/Dc High Voltage to Back in Black!!! 6 albums in a row!!!
Come to Fresno, it’s going to 106 today. Our pool stays open until October!
The price on the boxset was back to normal 2 weeks after this was posted.
Just waiting for the Born Again remix! C’mon, Tony! Also would be great to have a reissue of the Iommi album. 🤘
7 , Technical Ecstasy is an awesome album
I personally would say 7..I think technical ecstasy is quality
You ever notice how Ozzy (and probably Bob Daisley or Randy Rhoads) aped Dirty Women for the bridge to I Don't Know?
@@jimmypage2843 and No Bone Movies and Rock n Roll Doctor are basically the same song
@@seaoftranquilityprogI haven't listened to No Bone Movies in umpteen years I will check that out!
@@seaoftranquilityprog I haven't listened to No Bone Movies in umpteen years I will check that out!
Best track on Technical Ectasty is Dirty Woman, a mind melting riff, a bona fide classic.
I had another song in mind...
Which was ?
good stuff!
How about Queen? From the debut to News Of The World, that's a pretty strong run I think. I still agree with you that Sabbath's run is better, though.
From their debut to La woman the Doors had the best six album run. In my opinion. ☮️
NAZARETH:
Loud 'n' Proud (1973)
Rampant (1974)
Hair of the Dog (1975)
Close Enough for Rock 'n' Roll (1976)
Play 'n' the Game (1976)
Expect No Mercy (1977)
How about Queen?
To me, Ulcerate has had an almost perfect run of 7 awesome tecnical death metal albums in a row:
Of Fracture and Failure (2007)
Everything Is Fire (2009)
The Destroyers of All (2011)
Vermis (2013)
Shrines of Paralysis (2016)
Stare Into Death and Be Still (2020)
Cutting the Throat of God (2024)
Queen
One of the best 6 album runs in rock, probably THE best album runs in metal history, period. All unique from one another, but still within the realm of defining THE BAND, for when all members stayed together.
The Beatles and Led Zeppelin are probably the other ones with outstanding album runs on that scale.
Uriah Heep's first six is also a quite good run.
Mastodon from Leviathan onwards?
Maiden comes second for this then sabbath for me
Amen!
I'll add another great Birmingham band to the list - E.L.O. from 'On the Third Day' through to 'Discovery'.
What about the first 6 Budgie-albums?
First six Ozzy solo albums, and the first 5 King Diamond albums are perfect runs. My fave of the first six Sabbath releases is Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.
Van Halen? Kiss, Hotter than Hell, Dressed to Kill, Destroyer, Love Gun, Rock N Roll Over!
👍Agree.Sabbath for me.Like Chris said, they didnt "lift"any songs from other artists.Perfect 6 album run all 9.5 or 10s.Floyd and Sabbath will always be my top 2 bands of all time🤘👍(theDoors had a solid 6 album run.)
Hard to Disagree that this is the greatest six album run in history of heavy music. This band had the greatest riff master, the tightest rhythm players and the most eccentric frontman in heavy metal, which makes it my most favourite band of all time.
Porcupine Tree
1- Lightbulb Sun
2- In Absentia
3- Deadwing
4- Fear of a Blank Planet
5- The Incident
6- Closer/Continuation
