It's very sad to hear about his demise, I didn't know about this news until I read this comment. Julian came to chennai, a city in South India long back, probably 40 to 50 years back and my mum's friend's father Philip was completely moved by his performance. Later that night after the show, Philip went to the back stage and waited for a long time to speak to him whilst everyone else was getting his autograph. He told his fans that he's tired and he's going to go back and requested his fans to leave the back stage. But Philip was standing there and nodded "no" that he won't leave, and Julian asked "what do you mean you can't leave?" to which Philip replied "I want to know what guitar you were playing and I want to learn that ( Philip must've been in his early 40s or late 30s and was already playing the acoustic and electric guitar and classical guitar wasn't known in chennai back then) Julian asked Philip whether he can play the guitar and Philip played for couple of minutes. Julian told him this "always remember, to become a great musician you need to learn the theory of music, you get that right and you'll master the instrument". The next day Philip rode on his cycle and got his first book from a second hand book market. Ever since then, he had been learning theory and collecting books wherever he travelled. Philip played in lot of movies and became a great hit and a legend in the South Indian tamil film industry. Big names like ilayaraja and many more took notes from him. He's 86 now and he always tells me that it was Julian bream who inspired him to play the classical guitar. I don't know if he knows the news about Julian's demise, hopefully he takes up the guitar and starts to play again. RIP Julian.
Today I woke up with the notice that he passed away. I'm truly sadned. Bream gave me complete moments of happiness and joy. He always live in the music and in the guitar
Guitar, I feel, is one of the most perfect instruments to play Bach. Bach requires almost a kind of modesty when your playing, nothing overdone, nothing underdone, everything just right in its place and logically beautiful. And that is extremely hard to do, but classical guitar has a unique sound that kind of clicks with the style of Bach that demands such concentrated sound. This man does a wonderful job to do justice to this great piece.
This video caused me to take up the classical guitar after playing electrical for so long. A master of his instrument in every sense of the word and enormous inspiration to me. RIP. I'll keep watching your videos for the rest of my life, trying to become a better player.
this video proves why Classical guitar is undoubtedly the hardest style of guitar to master. there's no walls of distortion, or effects to hide behind. it's you, your guitar, and absolutely gorgeous music, which comes from even more gorgeous playing. JS Bream is a God.
RIP . I hope he gets to organise a jam session with his hero Django. I was privileged to hear him in concert five times and I still kick myself for the concerts I missed. However, the recordings are such a gift. Thank you you, Julian.
I know very little about classical guitar, or any music really, but julian bream seems to make his guitar sound so emotional. Of all the masters I've been watching on youtube, Mr bream stands out by far.
Beautiful! I think playing these classical songs on guitar makes them more relatable to contemporary generations and allows us to really appreciate Bach's mastery
Bream is one of the most important musicians of his time - he has expanded the guitar's repertoire by adding works from some of the most important composers of the 20th Century (Britten; Walton; Arnold and more). His style is unique and he is not afraid of criticism by the pedantic 'handle turners'. While I love the work of Satriani, Rhoads, Wylde, VH et al, none of them could approach what Bream does. Have you heard Bream improvising in the style of Django Reinhardt? Amazing!
Mr. Bream at the height of his powers. Say what you will about technique, speed, precision, virtuosity ect.. He had musicality and touch. Feel and emotion. Beautiful control of colour and restraint. An amazing musician.
Privileged to hear him perform back in the 80's. In recital he would give a background of every piece, the composer's inspiration. His sound is so unique you can hear just a couple bars and know it's him playing.
damn that sounds amazing wish there was a video of that. definitely would love to know more about all these pieces including this one, do you remember what it is he said of this one?
I'm a fifty seven year old blues guitarist from Seattle and I remember being a child of 8 or 9 and reading thru my stacks of Guitar Player Magazine and Julian Bream was always featured ... Perhaps not always - but I regret not purchasing any of his LPs. Tal Farlow, Lenny Breaux, John Scofield, are several others I really appreciate today. I don't know if youngsters today truly know what it was like having to literally hunt down vinyl albums back in the '70s. That's exactly what everyone had to do! And you would teach yourself how to tune your guitar to the song or album that you wanted to learn; and then just lift the record player's stylus thousands of times over and over again until you "eared out" what you wanted to learn. I miss those hunts. Used record stores, libraries, garage sales, friends' album collections, etc...

Any fine guitarist can play this piece, but this stands apart. The most amazing thing about this particular performance is the wide range of colours he is able to control. The sound is focused, or diffuse, near or distant( which is far different from merely loud or soft)cloudy or solid, and at will. Such control! And of course, an excellent choice of music!
