There's a new classical guitarists named Stephanie Jones. She's as good if not better. I've listened to Bream for years and listened closely. She's a new treasure
@@andrew3979 no she isn't as good. she has good technique but Parkening and Bream have an unmatched Timbre and tone. Jones doesn't use apoyando the way masters of this generation do. granted she is a great player but Millennials lack in interpretation and colouring that the post Segovia Russel/Bream, Williams/Parkening School has inmho.
@@CanadianDivergent she's extraordinary. I don't like the idea of someone new taking the place of the founding fathers of classical guitar but I know without a shadow of a doubt bream would be deeply moved and impressed by her playing. I've heard her live and I've listened to EVERYTHING classical guitar on RUclips. She's up there. Especially at her age.
@@andrew3979 Oh absolutely there is no question she is a great player. I agree that the masters of the last generation would have loved the next level players, such as Jones, My observations are that the younger generation have more technical facility, but as mentioned they use far more free stroke,...and maybe that IS a better way to play, IDK? I just think the golden era was when we had Bream, Parkening, Williams, and then Russell is kinda the last one of that era, and it was a golden era of playing. I personally don't think Jones is anywhere close to Russell when it comes to technique. he is the pinnacle of that. his Bach is practically Flawless. the new generation is just different, no less of great players, just the approach is much different.
Sad day for music when Julian left this world!!! God bless ✝️ I first heard his guitar music in the early fifties and always loved his beautiful playing ❤️👌
This is my favourite piece to perform because it is breathtakingly beautiful. It was Julian Breams rendition of this piece that informed my playing it more that any other. I remember spending weeks learning about the performance practices of this period and of Bach's fugues in particular. I wanted to be able to explain the reason or reasons for every single interpretative choice that I made. It took a full six months of learning and living with this fugue before I felt ready to perform it. Why so long? Well, I was influenced by David Russell, who spends a full year learning and playing a piece at half tempo, before he finally spends a week (and only one week) playing it at tempo, after which he is ready to perform. There is no piece that is as rewarding to play as this one. Probably the most serious mistake people make when learning a piece of music is practicing at too quick a tempo. The tempo should always come naturally and never be forced. I loved this fugue so much that I wanted to learn all of it immediately, but I understood that I would learn it much more solidly if I limited myself to learning one section per week. I divided this piece into about twelve sections. After the twelve weeks, I had this fugue performance ready, which is pretty quick for a piece of such complexity. This fugue changed my whole approach to practicing, and I've saved a lot of time as a result.
koyunbaba73 I am currently working on Bach's Allegro from B.W.V. 998 and I am taking a similar approach. I appreciate your comment and testimony as it is an encouragement for me.
This is a true statement on learning classical guitar. I have been playing for over 50 years and I always rush to learn. This sounds like a major improvement to add to my practice. Like a doctor all classical guitarists have a practice. Please quote me!
Thank you so much for lifting my spirits ! Ive spent a few days on this masterpiece and got sooo depressed at my fumbling around. Your detailed commitment and breakdown on your approach has lifted my spirit to really embrace the process of acquiring this very complex masterpiece to perform. Thank you !
To anyone who can play this, my sincere congratulations to all of your hard work. I have heard this piece many times I would not have imagined it could be played on the guitar. This comes from someone with experience in classical piano and even some Bach on guitar.
Magnifique de justesse, de rythme, de sonorité. Julian Bream a été un ambassadeur idéal pour la guitare classique. Nous avons de précieux enregistrements à et nous l'en remercions en pensant à son universalisme.
3:09 Look at that right hand! Amazing, beautiful use of "sul tasto" (near the fretboard) to a middle position to a bright "ponticello" (near the bridge). This is a paramount performance for classical guitar in my opinion. Long live Julian, wait for us up there (hopefuly!).
I love this piece and I can't separate that from loving Bream's interpretation. I was introduced to the piece by him. It's sense of forward driving is something he captures so well, I think it fits him.
I first heard this piece on a segovia recording I got when a young teen. I listened to that CD a lot. If it was an LP, it would not be playable anymore! Now that I'm in my thirties and picking up classical guitar, that recording is absolutely etched into my consciousness.
@@wilfreddamon1971 Oh my god, so sorry for answering so so late, BWV 1000, BWV 1001 and BWV 539 are pretty much the same, but in different instruments.

haha well spotted. I'm practicing this piece right now and it's refreshing to see this. Bream shows here a mistake is irrelevant if you play with soul!
I'm no guitar player but I remember that a friend who was a very good pianist and also a sax player explained to me that great classical players always made mistakes in a concert but it was not bum notes !! They just made the mistakes sound as if they were right, just not the notes from the original score. I've got a whole double CD of Lute and violin music by JS Bach adapted for guitar, by guitarist Eduardo Fernandes. This one is also a really beautiful version.
There are modern robot players that can probably play that piece cleaner but good luck trying to fill the hall with that Breamsound that just oozes from the instrument. He's a throwback to the golden era of performing like Cortot, Ysaye and Rubinstein who didn't give a fuck about notes.
Bream played with such character, dynamic and tonal contrast. You can really hear the personality and humanity in his playing. Much like the guitars he played. Unlike plasticky carbon braced guitars played by automatons
In art, When it comes to masters, I believe its not wise to compare them. Some comment williams is better than Bream, Yepes is the best, Romero is better etc. The fact is that every virtuoso has his/her unique quality and essence which nobody else could performe and this is what made them masters! For me, when I want to listen to bach I go for sollscher but, for this special fugue I definitly listen to Bream's version. If you play guitar and want to play this, I recommend you to watch his master class carefully which I believe is one of the best master classes recorded ever!
when i wanted to listen to perfect technique i always chose williams, bream had better variety of colour and emotional playing, he was my favourite. his album of albeniz and granados was incredible.
Classical most unergonomic guitar with flat fingerboard? I want it little curved, narrower, cutaway body, two mics, and shorter scale 630mm. I have old tradition classical guitar. It is 50% harder than any my other guitars to play. It would be okay if have huge long fingers.
Will be remembered forever as one of the greatest classical guitarists of the 20th century
Agreed. He was a master of both Guitar & Lute.
Sorry, but the guy is playing out of sync...
you mean the GREATEST...nobody has Breams depth of tone..his warmth..not even Segovia
I am addicted to this version of this Fugue. Mr Bream we will remember you for ever!!!
Yes, many times over
Changed my life’s course
Broke but happy
Listen to the Czech Vladimir Mikulka's performance. Available here on YT, too.

Played to perfection, as no other guitarist can imitate. This is the definitive rendition of this beautiful violin piece, in my opinion.
Julian always harnesses the true energy of the song.
