  • Episode 5 of DIY Willy’s Tool Tuesday, my 17 year old Central machinery 8” bench top drill press has quite working. So I went back to HF for a new replacement drill press. I picked up their BAUER branded 8” drill press as a replacement. It’s virtually the same unit but with some additions and improvements.
So follow along as we put this BAUER 8” 5 Speed Bench top Drill Press to the test.

I'm in the same boat. My old drill press has been through several moves and used for 20+ years. Time to replace it.

I’ll see how long this one holds up. My old central machinery lasted 17years. I did make a few simple repairs but it will not drill any large holes without stopping.

Good stuff Willy! I like your new drill press. I wouldn't sweat the press in chuck, I bought a floor model a few years ago and it had the same press in style chuck. I was kinda miffed at the time because it was advertised with an R2 taper, and I was thinking "oh boy! I can stick a boring bar on there!" Nope, but it still works fine for drilling as it is. I do occasionally chuck up an end mill every now and then. 🤣

I hope to get some good use out of it. It’s basically the same as my old one and I expect the same reliability from it. I was thinking to take the old one apart and see where the problem is. I think the motor just got tired. Maybe I can buy new brushes in it and sell it or keep it for back up.

More information on the end mill your talking about. I’m gonna look it up.

Nice review Willy. Im a little leery of that press on chuck though. A good test would be using a 1/2" bit and drill into some steel to see if that chuck will stay put.
I still have a tall floor drill press my parents bought in the 70's from sears, i inherited it and still use it but i hear some bearing noise in it now, the new ones cost twice as much now, Like $300 ahh. Good tuesday tool review👍

Hello Lou-eye, I also had some concerns about the chuck. My old press lasted about 17 years and never had a problem with the chuck. I will be drilling several 12mm holes in 3/16 steel so we will put the drill press to the test. Thanks for watching!!

Tear that old thing down and replace the bearings. Those old things will work forever.
