  • Hello flight simmers, and welcome back to Alpha Hotel flight simulator training.
This is video #11 in our instrument training series. In this video, we'll take a look at localizer back course approaches. We'll talk about what they are and how to fly them - and then demonstrate flying one in the Analog/Steam gauge Cessna 172.

I'm about to dig into these again and get caught up on the recent videos I haven't seen yet. They are always so informative, so much appreciated. I have the last 5 queued up and ready to go and I'm looking forward to them!
I'm thrilled to see you're covering some of the more obscure instrument approaches like VOR without a FAF and localizer back courses. I've been spending a bunch of time recently shooting NDB approaches before they're all gone. Very fun and challenging. I hope you do lesson on them as there are some questions I have on some of them.
One in particular is NDB RWY 11 at TTCP Robinson Int. Tobago. I have no idea how to begin this approach arriving from the south. I know you've mentioned the possibility of a series covering "weird" procedures. I hope you do it some day and can cover this approach.
Thanks again for all the time you spend on these great videos!

@tonyw9152, thanks for the kind words. Glad you're enjoying the content and finding the videos helpful. Thanks for watching!
I'm actually putting together the multimedia on NBD approaches right now, and am targeting to release that video on 03/09.
That is an interesting approach into Trinidad. Looks like it's basically the same kind of approach we looked at in this video - only using an NDB, and using a holding pattern in lieu of a standard procedure turn. Looks like you would fly to the NBD and enter the outbound leg of the hold while descending to the outbound altitude (1700') then you would descend to your MDA (500' for Cat A aircraft) when you are established on the inbound leg of the hold.
(There are also a couple of NBD/DME approaches there as well - where you use the NBD for course guidance, and dial your VOR receiver to the DME frequency to use the DME to identify the FAF.)

@@AlphaHotelFlightSimulation Fantastic news! I'm really looking forward to your NDB content. I'm trying to get as much NDB time in as possible before they're all gone. Every airac cycle I seem to see a few more disappear in my area and I think it's a bit sad to see them go. They're quite the challenge and a lot fun.
Thanks for tips. I wondered if it was a hold in lieu but I've only ever seen them in VOR approaches. So if I understand correctly regarding TTCP, when entering from the south or south east you do a parallel entry, and from the south west you do a direct entry? The same as you would with any hold?

Glad you found it helpful, @mishmish1968. It's not too bad, once you learn how to think about it (and set up your equipment correctly.) It's nice that the REV/Back course tracking seems to be working on the 172 classic now, too.
As always, thanks for your continued support of the channel, and thanks for watching!
