- Hello flight simmers, and welcome back to Alpha Hotel Flight Simulator Training.
In this video we'll take a look at rarest approach in the world - the Simplified Directional Facility (SDF) approach. We'll talk about what it is, how it works, and how to fly it. We'll then demonstrate the only one of these approaches that is still operational in the United States in the G1000 equipped Cessna 172.

I am glad I used the 172 with the G1000 as there was a whole lot going on! Next I will try it with a 6 pack, but I may suffer from some serious overload 🙂 Excellent videos, as always.
@tonyevans2967, it does have a lot of moving parts - but at the end of the day, it flies just like a localizer without a glideslope. Using a six pack on this approach isn't too different - just a different presentation, and one less DME indicator. If you want some real fun, go try an NDB approach with a six pack! 😨

It's a rare approach, but at the end of the day, it basically flies just like a localizer without the glideslope. If you want to add some spice to it, though, try taking off from KMOR, navigating to the NDB, and entering the procedure via procedure turn. (Watch that MSA!)

@@AlphaHotelFlightSimulation sure I'll try this one always love the challenge ,, my pleasure, but i do tell the truth about the channel I'm subscribed to so many channels mostly about anything aviation but your channel is unique and no other channel put such content in a professional order for flight sim , this is why we should show appreciation for the hard work you putting , as a simmer we all learn flying close to real world flying and this is our dream.

Ok, I found advisory circular 120-108 that explains CDFA in details. However, the FAA website states that this AC was cancelled. What does that mean? Is that a recommendation against using CDFA in non precision approaches?
@nice2care - it looks like the basically just updated it. AC 120-108A is now current, and appears to be an update of 120-108 (when they issue an update, they "cancel" the old one.) I haven't flown actual IFR in a real aircraft, but last I heard most commercial operators are conducting CDFAs on non-precision approaches. Just glancing through the new AC, it looks like the FAA reccomend CDFAs on non-precision approaches for all operators.

Just wandering…..any reason why you are not using App mode on the AP? I know there is no GS and this is basically a Localiser but out of habit could you use App mode……unless there is some reason not to?

@miket3445, good question!
Since APP mode is both a lateral mode and a vertical mode, it will not enable you to utilize another vertical mode to descend. More incediously, if you engage another vertical mode (VS or FLC) to descend, it will likely *disable* your NAV tracking mode and put you into ROL hold mode - meaning the autopilot is no longer tracking the lateral guidance. If you failed to notice the NAV mode was no longer active, it's possible you could drift off course as you descend.
