This is the single greatest ending in a Batman movie imo. what i love about this movie is that it breaks the superhero formula; the villain arguably 'wins' and the hero doesn't foil his plan in time. there is no physical final battle where the hero overpowers the main villain. but that the hero's victory is realizing/remembering he has to first and foremost help people and bring hope rather than destroy those he sees as evil and inspiring fear, because otherwise, there's very little separating him from the villain except that he doesn't kill. and because he doesn't fall into that philosophical/spiritual trap, because he made a stand for helping innocents rather than punishing the wicked is why good still technically wins. and because of that, you start to question the whole formula too - why /do/ we need to see someone physically or even psychologically overpowering a foe to see them as a hero?

The police have failed Gotham, and the light of hope they were tasked to give has faded out as more and more of their corruption was exposed. Batman sees this and accepts that he must fill the role as the one who gives the people hope, as the light the guides them to safety. He sees the police car sink and the lights go out and he realizes in that moment that being vengeance is not the answer. He has to be justice and not just punish the guilty but protect the innocent as well, especially in the absence of a competent police force (Gordon not withstanding).

There's lots of critics who called it *needlessly* gloomy and dark as if all superhero movies have to be lighthearted, fast-paced and quirky and when they're not and are actually slow-paced and introspective, it's them trying to be something higher than what they are. Totally agree. The symbolism of this part of the movie is really fantastic. Instead of being consumed by revenge and becoming a sort of villain for villains, he becomes a hero of the people he saves, the kind of urban legend that all Gotham citizens respect and honor as their protector. As opposed to Riddler, who thought he was a figure of truth and justice for the people who believed in him, was rejected by Batman and realized he overestimated his enemies intelligence and embraced vengeance and became a true villain instead of a murdering vigilante. I think that the effects of this movie and partnering with the Joker will turn Riddler into the classic villain from the comics, always trying to intellectually defeat Batman with no morality left.
