Ounce for ounce, pound for pound, there is arguably no better fighting fish than smallmouth bass -- especially on light tackle. Thanks Matt for taking us along on another entertaining video!
I agree, mostly. The smallmouth favorite fish to target. They are so much fun! Could you imagine hooking into a 5 pound bluegill? I think that ounce for ounce, pound for pound… The Bluegill wins.
@@lawrencewilhelm3031 Yeah, but most of that would be due to trying to reel in a fish shaped like a dinner plate turned sideways. Smallies are much stronger and they have that oversized tail. Bluegill rarely if ever jump -- smallies will go acrobatic.
I like how your videos tend to stick to a specific style or theme.. like using a hellgrammite or a whopper plopper, etc. Not jumping all over the place, casting anything to catch enough fish to put in a video. I always learning something. Keep it up!
"Diseased"? That's a random comment to make. I fish all sorts of places and species and there's nary a "diseased" fish among them if ever. Like what are you talking about?
I really appreciate the way you are in handling and releasing your fish...it shows alot of respect for them. Love and always look forward to your videos Keep em coming.
Great stuff as always Matt! Just know in terms of video ideas that you can do anything and we'd just be happy to go along on an adventure with you! Just keep being you!
Love that AFTER going into the water to retrieve your phone you kept fishing! That’s dedication! The accent is familiar, having grown up in MN in 60s and 70s and fished ND (Grand Forks area) rivers back in 1980s. The spread of smallmouth in the Upper Midwest has been a real upgrade to the already awesome fishery. People used to look down on smallmouth (walleyes forever!) but now they’ve even taken over the hallowed waters of Mille Lacs Lake. Yes, it’s an “invasive species” but one that everyone seems to love and for good reason.
I had to make sure I was fully dry before I hopped in my truck and drive to the next spot! Thankfully it was a nice warm September day and not one of the 40 degree ones.
Been following for a long while now, love the vids. I'm going to start commenting more because I know it feeds the algorithm and you deserve more and deserve to be in more people's feeds. I just learned of your career path and I hope this platform continues to support your fishing lifestyle. Tight lines.
I always find your videos so relaxing and make me wanna go fishing for small mouth too. I think it's your calm nature and voice that tells me you're a kind person. Unfortunately, I don't think we have any in the UK. Not that I know of.... anyone?
When I was a kid in Utah back in the mid 70's my fishing buddy, kind of a mix of big brother, best friend, partner in crime (him being a family man with 3 daughters who didn't fish) needing a fishing buddy grabs the son of a widow who lives across the street and needs a miracle a father figure who has time to teach this kid the tricks of fishing for rainbow, cutthroat, big mouth and small mouth, pike and anything else that swims. One of the best places we found to fish was on the road up Provo Canyon. Wherever a culvert crosses the road we get out, catch minnows with a cheese hook loaded with stinky cheese and a small salmon egg. We then use the minnows to fish for rainbows in the pools both upstream and down from the culvert. Caught some beautiful trout in those streams had a blast doing it and I'm sure my friend Del is still out there doing it.
LoL to the emergency dip. I’ve taken a swim a couple of times to retrieve a favorite lure but a phone…man I bet you moved quick ! We love your channel even though my wife doesn’t quite understand why I would watch someone else fish. Great youtube Channel. Thank’s !
THAT WAS YOU😮! I was admiring this sharp little kayak rig parked on the side of the highway when my wife said” did you see that guy “? When I said no, what guy, she replied the one that just jumped off the bridge in his underwear. I thought she was just pulling my leg.
Matt, you're always so meticulous and honest. I've wondered for quite awhile now, can you share what line of work /field you're in ?? Thanks. Also, these Saturday videos have for some time now replaced another well known Saturday(in the Chicago area at least) morning fishing show for me. Your content is very alined with the type of fishing i prefer. No crazy antics, no BS. Just solid footage and info. Thanks again !!
Nothing exciting really, I just drove delivery trucks most of my life. I worked for DHL and Fedex for several years and drove a medical supply truck about 500 miles a day a few years last before I got layed off. Fortunately that was right around the time my RUclips checks started getting to be bigger than my paychecks. After 20 years of breaking my back and knees hopping in and out of delivery trucks I was ready for a change and I never would have thought making fishing videos could be a career path lol.
@@RoadLifePursuits The past couple years I’ve made more off my fishing videos than I ever did working a real job so yeah the potential to make good money is there. For me the money is in the views. Ad rates during the summer usually pay $6-10 per thousand views so if I can average 2 million views a month across my channel I can expect a check for 12-20k each month. Of course about 30% of that I have to hand over to the IRS, pay for gas/tackle/camera gear etc and the ad rates drop over the winter where I get a fraction of my summer revenue but it sure beats working myself almost to exhaustion 10-12 hours a day in a hot truck for 35k a year! It can be stressful when the fish aren’t biting though and I’m struggling to come up with footage.
@@ndyakangler Good for you there young man. As someone who worked in the trades all my life, i completely get the breaking ones back thing. Luckily , although they're much weaker, i now can hit the river a few hours at a time. Sincerely hope this endeavor here continues to grow for you. In my humble opinion, you're VERY good at it.
Just wanted to say I started watching you after my fiancé past away and hadn’t fished since we’ll fast forward to now two years later and me and my new gf fish almost every weekend and you my good sir have made it where I love doing it again thank you
You're blessed with quality waters... We only have a couple small streams and a few small lakes nearby, all with heavy fishing pressure.. you catch half dozen of the one's we'd be lucky to see once a year (or two). Really jealous....
I love those nikko hellgrammite baits ever since the first time I saw you fishing with them years ago I had to get them and have been using them ever since and they crush the smallies and the largemouth as well!
We used to net the hellgrammites in the creek and slay smallmouth all day. It is the best bait for smallmouth by far. They are nasty but they stay on the hook great.
I used to use a rock rake and a framed screen (two man operation) to catch live hellgrammites in the chemung river in upstate NY…. Excellent bait for all sorts of shallow water fish in the finger lakes region….
I always use trophy bass by procure with a natural color lure. I do this, and it works great for me. I'd fish a spot 10 to 15 minutes tops, then move. I'll usually stay 15 minutes if i land a fish. I'll normally move spot after 10 minutes if theres no bites. A good reason to add trophy bass by procure Matt that way the scent will draw the fish in during conditions to where its hard for bass to find food. Theyll go by smell thats why procure trophy bass works so well. They use real, shad creyfish and nightcrawlers to give scent to their bait with amino acids. Its much better and better for fish to eat instead of man made chemicals. 😊
I should try it for muskie fishing. I had a few follows on a glide bait the other day but they wouldn’t commit. Not sure how well the scent would stay on a hard bait but it might be worth a try.
One time I was fishing crystal clear water in the UP, and I caught a 21 in smallie that had two nice ones follow it. My next two casts were a 20 in and a 19 in smallie, but I do agree that when they follow up each other they typically don’t bite.
