Hellgrammite Hammer Time On Some River Smallmouth

- A fun day of kayak and wade fishing smallmouth bass on a small river using a Nikko Hellgrammite on a 1/8oz Keitech round head jig. After this trip I'm impressed with the hellgrammite, I caught some really nice fish on it and almost everything I put it in front of attacked it!

Everytime I watch you fish this river I am amazed. Its like, “today Im going to try an old reebok pump sneaker from my child hood and see how we do.” First cast-5 lb smallie crushes it while another school of smallies swarm near by like piranhas attacking a honey baked ham lol

I've watched a number of your videos and the thing that impresses me the most is the way you manage your kayak. Every motion is calm and deliberate, thus assuring nothing disastrous happens. Here in central ohio helgramites , for me, are 2nd only to a large soft crawl when using live bait. Then a nice chub minnow. I just found ur videos a couple days ago and r throughly enjoying them. Thanks for the entertainment.

Depends, one of the best secrets to fishing is to go where there is no fishing pressure. They will bite if they are other use to seeing a lure. Have a nice kyack like his makes it much easier to do that.

Gotta take time to say thanks. I have fished for 40 years on rivers out of an inner tube. But I never considered using hellgramites. When the river is real clear like the Brazos down here in Texas, I have always used a blue and red worm called Fire and Ice. But since this show I went to Cabellas and bought some hellgramite lures and slayed them on the Brazos yesterday. Now I gotta go buy some more because I used most of the package. My experience yesterday was I used a small jig but every time I caught a fish I lost the lure, plus I kept getting constantly hooked up to the bottom. Finally I changed to 2/0 worm hook with a very tiny slip sinker. That solved the problem of hooking up the bottom as well as loosing the lure. Thanks again for leading me to hellgramites and I love your channel.

Thanks for putting the smallmouth bug back in my head . Best freshwater fighter pound for pound in the northern hemisphere along with American shad . Now you go to the southern hemisphere there are freshwater fish that fight like saltwater . The Amazon basin is full of them . I've used helgrammites on trout and i'll surely try them on smallys but we always used live or plastic crickets . Pardee lake in Northern California has great smallmouth fishing along with Kokanee , another incredible fighter and jumper .
Love pardee Lake in California. Smallmouth are always fun. Bug i use the Ned rig. Looks Line i might try somthing new this year

What's great about those Nikko hellgrammites is that they are indestructible! You can catch fish forever on one. They only reason I ever have to replace one is when I get hung up and have to break it off. Excellent product that catches tons of fish.
I swear this is the best RUclips fishing channel to watch, I fish in similar conditions in the same areas (sort of, a bit more north from you.) I love love this channel!

I'm a avid bass guy in Boston. Originally from NYS. Your doing amazing. Happy to see you treat the fish nice. I may be starting a channel. I get some really big smallmouth. It took me 2 weeks working one spot over like a 12hrs days wating for them. I nailed them. Whopper Pop. Charles River. Its loaded with fish. Its really clean now. Ok, be safe. Good luck.

When I lived in Ohio we used them all the time . This one of my new favorite channels. Just received my Phantom Spider I saw from a previous video. Was never a Big Kayak fan, but ! Think I would do well in Florida and Large mouth fishing . Wish we didn't have so many Gators 😖😖😖😖 Damn ! You're in the honey hole " Sniper" ! Lol be safe

Here in Virginia on the north fork of the holston river live hellgramites are the best bait I've used. In may they come up under the rocks on the bank and they shed their hard" shells " and turn orange/ go through the change. When they are that color you can take a stick and turn them inside out and they are irresistible to anything swimming in the water. Love the channel, just recently found you. You do the exact kind of fishing that i absolutely love to do, and when I can't, love to watch.

I’ve never seen anybody upstream from the island where it gets rocky and the current picks up. It takes a little work getting up there but it’s well worth it!

14:44 smallie that hit under the sod bank was dope! I'm all about durability in plastics so those hellgramites certainly have my attention. The river I fish at school is loaded with macroinvertabre's like them and loaded with smallies. Just got back from my NY trip and caught over 100 bass in 7 days! I also upgraded my kayak and got to break it in! Didn't catch many smallmouth but that largemouth were plentiful. Tons of videos to come! Awesome video as always.
It was interesting seeing how they reacted to that hellgrammite when I was going through the footage. Lots of smaller ones that I dang near stepped on or hit with my paddle would still hit it with no hesitation when I threw it at them! That’s awesome you caught a bunch of fish on your trip! I’ll have to watch for some new videos!

I'm going to order some today. But the problem is, in the Western part of North Carolina our rivers and creeks are mainly granite and river stone rocks. And if you are going to jig fish you got to swim it. If it touches the bottom you're hung up. But I know Smallmouths love Hellgrammites or what we call Grampus. Thanks David

If there are any river bass fishing tournaments, you would just dominate! I have watched you fish rivers many times now, and it’s always the same. You know where they hide. And you aren’t afraid to try different lures. I have used miniature hellgrammites for brook trout with success.

We catch Hellgrammites also called Dobsons in the creeks here in Upstate New York. How we catch them is by placing a wire screen like a screen on a screen door in the current of a shallow creek one person holds the screen and the other person gets in front of the screen and kicks up the dirt mud and rocks and the Hellgrammites flow into the screen. The bass up here love them.
Fantastic vid; maybe your best yet, but I may be biased because that's my favorite kind of water to fish, although these days it's mostly with a wooly bugger on a fly rod (have yet to tie a decent hellgrammite). The hellgrammite has been my favorite for years when using spinning gear, with a split shot about 15" up, but they were either hard plastic with no movement or cheap rubber that would tear off after a feisty bluegill or bass (I bought many of those; two per pack, IIRC). Illegal to use the real ones where I live, but I do believe they're the best natural bait for these waters, and with that tough skin, they keep going, and going, and going. Just be careful with the big ones because they will draw blood. Seems you're doing a lot more talking these days. Thanks for taking us along!
