I had just bought The White Album but couldn't get into it properly because I had to go on a camping holiday with some school friends and one of our teachers. I wasn't very happy so I sat on an outcrop overlooking the Shoalhaven river it's a big river at that point and it's a beautiful spot so naturally Mother Nature's Song came into my head. Such a magical moment I was seventeen but it feels like it happened yesterday. Now I'm seventy and still The Beatles move me.
Yesterday, I'll Follow the Sun, Blackbird, Rocky Racoon, Mother Nature's Son..Mccartney had a unique way of playing acoustic..you've captured every nuance of his style in this very excellent lesson. Many Thanks.🙂
Dude... I can't do it. It's so tough. I came back to this video after months of practicing and I'm still having trouble. It's so unfair. I really want to learn this song and do it right. Unbelievable how talented Paul was. Edit: WOW! 5 years later and I'm the top comment! Never had this honor. Thanks for all of the likes guys. I wouldn't be top without all of YOU. I hope a lot of you made progress with this angelic riff. Sorry I havent responded to you until now. I totally forgot about this account lol.
Have a spell and come back to them, your subconscious will have worked on it, other things you learn will contribute. If it were easy, everyone would do it, yes?, thats what I tell my students, anyway.
If I can try to help, let’s isolate the hard part. What, first and foremost is hard about this song? Chords? Playing? Singing and playing? Work on each part separately. If the chords are the issue, isolate that and just play downstrokes or something simple to start. If it’s the picking, just try the picking he does on a D and go from there. It’s not about being fair or unfair. It’s practicing properly. Happy playing.
Great teaching. I've been at it all week and just about got the hang of it. I even had a dream about Macca last night, he was on a train signing autographs and then came and sat next to me for a chat - When I told him I was a huge fan, he gave me his classic Macca thumbs up gesture!
It's an amazing thing that with only "one chord" you can make such an incredible tune. I've been playing as an afficionate for more than 18 years and i can say two things for the ones who are having trouble getting this: 1: you have to first manage the fingerpicking, it's so delicate to play only 2 strings. 2: play it as slow as you can while you're learning... and then when you start getting the tune go faster until yo get to the original tempo of the song PS: i wish i had youtube to learn songs 20 years ago.
Woke up with this playing in my head. Came here and after a couple of hours it’s coming out of my 00 Gibson. Thanks for the straight ahead , right to the point, lesson.
The Beatles at 26 years old composed music you're likely to never to never be heard again in our lives. Truly amazing musicians. You think it's easy till someone points out the pure genius of that small band and what they accomplished. Great lessons. Keep it up for all our sakes.Thanx
I have to say that your tutorials are done in such a relaxing way, that I actually enjoy watching them. With great hints and tips along the way. Many thanks for clearing up some issues I used to have. Cheers.
This is an outstanding lesson. You really have the feel of the song down so well, plus all the details are "note perfect". Thanks for spending the effort to teach others.
What a great tutorial. Tackling Blackbird nearly melted my brain but with that under my belt this one while similar is now easier. Thanks for showing how the notes relate to the chords at those positions. Nice work. Such a classic, McCartney wrote so many great songs.
I agree i have been playing for 32 years and thats what makes the guitar such a wonderful instrument ,we are always learning something new with each new song ,lick ,riff or chord progression . Rock on everyone !!!!!! from Scotland .
Miles Trotter - because he is a real musician.. And he put a zillion hours into practicing.. He really Wanted to learn and do it.. That is the difference.. :)
Hard,great,hard,great...take real patience and real dedicated practice but its so clearly a real step up of playing... really shows you McCartney genius..just get your hands on it and feel the magic....hard,great,hard,great..
Your abilities never cease to amaze me and your attention to detail is outstanding! Your videos focus on the guitar, the sound quality is superb, and your conversational style; engaging. Thank you for all that you do.
Right x how many ever times you said it in the video. You're a pretty good guitar teacher, and I like it that you engage your audience, and talk to us like we're right there.
I am sort of an expert on Beatles trivia and I know the chords to almost every song. You I must say know your stuff. A great video and a great lesson. Thank you. I really love that you give McCartney, the song writer and player such great credit.
Jay Rock Nurse Yeah PM is an amazing individual. When you look at his body of work through the years it's almost impossible to believe that one guy could produce so many excellent songs. Maybe not so much in the last while but the guy is getting old right? Also an amazing singer and one of the best bass players ever. Sometimes when I listen to Beatles stuff I just listen to the bass, like Penny Lane or Something, really great playing. cheers
Great video bro! It’s funny how people debate about who’s a better lead guitarist-Clapton, Hendrix, etc. etc. I always fall back on “oh yeah… Paul is the best lead bassist ever”.
Thanks man! About 2 years ago I had the opportunity to learn this classic Paul fingering with you. Today I revisit to remember some accordions and thank you again for your willingness and affection, a big hug!! from Brazil
I'm speechless. If I close my eyes I can't tell the difference between you and the Beatles. Blackbird is picked similarly if I'm correct; typical McCartney style.
I know this is older but absolutely amazing. I have been doing this one wrong for 25 years.... I don't understand the thumbs down on any of your work. You sir are very talented.
So many others have said it, but it never hurts to hear it some more. I just found you in my beginning days of picking up the guitar. You are so succinct in your words and your playing -- and in the way of teaching, I dare say, you're better than Paul. I love how you get Paul's incredible brilliance in composing. With eyes closed, I wouldn't be able to tell you and Paul's playing apart. Now, I'm inspired to work hard to get these new guitar hands into half decent playing form because my voice really wants to sing these to my own guitar accompaniment. I am most appreciative of your work and have become a new fan of yours.
CONGRATULATIONS for this video ! At last a video where the "teacher doesn't talk for an hour before playing ! You had the excellent idea to play first, section by section without explanations nor useless words naming each finger, each string and each note...Everything is there in 2'. Then for those who need, they can study the next 23'. I wish all RUclips guitar teachers did the same as you. I love the 2nd guitar that I had not found by myself. Thank a lot ! The hardest bit is actually the singing ! Paul's voice is so high pitched. A tip for those like me with a lower voice : Use a kapo and try it along the neck til you find the tone that suits your voice.
Thanks for the great tutorial. I've been playing this song for years, but never had the fill parts as accurately played as you have them. Treble notes on your Taylor ring so clearly!
Andy, Your work is so perfect because you know music, you feel the music, and you are just so talented on the guitar ! We are all so blessed to have you give us such joy in hearing all the songs that shaped our lives in the 60's and 70's ! Thank you, ever so much ! All your Beatle's music is so wonderful for me - I hope someday you may look at the song - "I've Just Seen a Face" , another beautifully done song by my favorite group.. Shutup & Play - Guitar Tutorials By the way 'Shutup & Play - Guitar Tutorials', I can recommend, although I don't truly know whether you'll like the song or not, Simon & Garfunkel's song 'The Dangling Conversation' from 1966. It is a beautiful song and as always with Paul Simon, a very fine poem!!!
Thank you for posting this lesson.I watched your video well over 100 times to learn it. I have played some of McCartney's stuff for years but never managed to play this song correctly. I finally got it! I trained and practiced recently to thumb pick and it has made a tremendous difference in the ability to use 3 fingers to get it right. Tom Bresh (Merl Travis's son) teaches this style. It has opened the musical pandora box on this one for me! Thanks once again. Keep up the good work.
Been about 8 years for trying to learn this song. Had it pieced together but not totally gelled lol but tonight i got almost all of it, now just need the ending lol
This is the best, awesome tutorial my friend! For decades I've played this song, but like many others not correctly. There were many nuances I was simply unable to figure out, particularly the ending. I know why now; the 2 guitar parts were masterfully overlaid when I thought it was only one. Thank you for setting me straight!
I tried this before your "Here Comes The Sun" lesson. Great lesson for a beautiful song. One of my favorite on the White Album. Your video is very clear and both parts on the screen at the end is beautiful and useful. McCartney style is well explained and you do it very well. You also give some details i didn't see before. Thanks a lot, I work this song now but I need to practice to get fluidity. And my guitar doesn't sound as good as your Taylor which is really wonderful. Thanks again.
Thanks for doing such a great job on this wonderful song - one of my faves of all time. Heard he was writing it while Russian tanks were rolling into Czechoslovakia. Such a stark contrast of how it should be verses what it was at the time. This was a gem of a lesson.
I really enjoy your lessons but as an intermediate player, you can imagine that they're not so easy for me. But even if I can't get that "right off the record sound" the tips I pick up from you make my versions more recognizable. Still have to say that I am very jealous of your ability. Thanks.
Thank you for taking the time to create this video. I've always loved this tune.... now am trying to learn it and your video is very detailed and helpful (with references to out takes I did not know about). Great job and you play it so smoothly, I think I like the way you play it better than on the original recording!
this is my favorite beatles song , superbly done mate i should mention that its lovely to play it in drop d tuning . john denver does a superb uptempo version as well .
Well done for all your lessons mate, I particularly loved the Led Zep ones. I play acoustic myself jansch stuff and Beatles amongst others, I remember slaving over a record player to learn this song. Pre RUclips days. Ha ha. Enjoyed the work out but You tube and particularly guys like your self spending your time to teach others is a gift indeed. Some of the younger and older generation will appreciate your valuable lessons.
Really enjoyed the lesson and the tribute to Sir Paul. I agree that it's kind of an unknown, non-mainstream and underrated Beatles song. Awesome for the guitar, especially if you have either a second player or a looper. I knew the beginning very well but was looking for the middle and end parts and you did a great job with it. Thanks! BTW another great one in kind of the same category is Julia, which I also know pretty well, but that one kind of hurts to play. Thanks!
Shutup & Play - guitar tutorials awesome lesson man really enjoyed playing this tune. One of my favorite songs off the white album! Much love and gratitude to you! Dude if you could do Green is the Colour by Pink Floyd off of their album More, thatd be fantastic. Such a beautiful song - theres no lessons and the tabs out are only centered on the chords in the intro of the rhythm guitar but I definitely hear another acoustic playing lead and doing overdubs and I know your crazy talented ears could pick it out! Just a thought Anyway thanks for all you do, youre the man!!! - Brandon
Just love this lesson, this song has haunted me since I heard it, those D to F to G changes, and you even hear a little of John's dear prudence in there. I like to think they still breathed in their brother's ways and made music in their own studios, yet played things that were similar right across from ea other. You do such great work dude. Mix just enough history in as well.
I almost expect to hear that bizarre "knock, knock, knock" sound on this after the introduction just like on the original Beatles White Album recording! 😀
Wow, somehow I don't think I've ever heard this song. It sounds fantastic. Your video started up and now I know this will be next on my list to learn. I already know how to play Blackbird using this finger/thumb thing so maybe that will help. I'm trying to keep myself from starting this one until I finish your Landslide one. Whew. I've been working on that one for month but will not give up! It's slowly coming together. Can't wait to learn this one too! Thanks again.
***** Hey Stephanie, sounds like you're working hard on your playing, good for you! Yeah Mother Nature's Son is a real nice song to learn. Good luck with it and thanks for watching.
What a fine fine fine lesson, and so thoroughly done! To me it feels like a generous gift, thank you very much! (By the way, it´s alway a pleasure watching one of your lessons.) XXX Benno

Paul was the best musician in the Beatles. Incredible songs and his guitar playing was so overlooked.

This is a like a super secret amazing triad/chord tone lesson too! Thanks!
Your lessons are well done; clear & informative.
Thank you!
I almost expect to hear that bizarre "knock, knock, knock" sound on this after the introduction just like on the original Beatles White Album recording! 😀
your channel takes me away to a beautiful place free of worry and stress. i miss meals learning your lessons. and that's good. :D
Thanks. I play this one on piano already. And I just thought last night, why have I not learned in on guitar. Doesn't look to difficult.
Thanks so much man this is my favourite song to play on guitar now such a great song
Superb rendition. Sounds just great - thank you.
Jon Atherton You're welcome Jon and thanks for watching.
I first heard John Denver’s cover of the song on his Rocky Mountain High album. It’s one of my favorites even if it’s a cover.
