Fiona - “I don’t understand. I’m supposed to be beautiful?”
Shrek - “But you are beautiful.”
Teaching people beauty is in the eye of the beholder since 2001.
Yeah, I really enjoy the fact that, despite the near-constant jokes, this film manages to deliver with a strong message/ heart as well. That’s the way to deliver a satisfying film!
Yes but ' body positivity' went too far these days.
"oh you aren't sexually attracted to me? FAT SHAMING!" and.. you cannot control who/what you are attracted to, to a large degree. So this is not honestly the right message, in the 'woke' culture..
Except it isn't, the film is about two people finding love despite their lack of inherent beauty and putting value on merit instead of superficial traits.
@@nickreacts6394 For your own viewing pleasure (from Cinema Therapy): ruclips.net/video/IyrgaVs3gzU/видео.html&pp=gAQBiAQB (25min)
Fiona, you are beautiful as an ogre!
Some fun facts:
It is directly poking fun at Disney, there was a huge feud between some of the artists at dreamwork and the higher ups; Lord Farquaad is supposed to sound like F***wad and is designed to look like Eisner, the like CEO of Disney at the time.
No one wanted to work on this movie while it was being made; animators would get sent to work on it when they made mistakes working on other films lol (personally I think this is why they managed to get away with so much)
Not just that. A lot of former Disney employees that got fired when they shut down the studio in Florida went to work for DreamWorks!
Shrek is love, Shrek is life

Shrek is life 👹
‘shrek is like bilbo baggins’ is a bold statement but makes more sense the more I think about it
This movie was a cultural reset. I absolutely love it. It definitely shaped us older Gen Z people and our sense of humor. I quote this movie so much it’s annoying.
Watching this movie as a kid really couldn’t get any better
Agreed. We need some more movies that start cultural resets.
They mean older Gen Z. I was 3 when this came out. I grew up watching the Shrek films and they definitely helped shape my sense of humour.
it shaped younger millennials too (any 93 babies?! woo)
Even us young Millennials fell in love with this movie and how it made our parents laugh uncomfortably.
My fave joke is either Donkey’s rant about layers and parfait, or the rude but accurate descriptions of the eligible princesses given by the Magic Mirror as if they were bachelorettes on the Dating Game.
Those are both GREAT choices. Well-written, perfectly delivered, and hilarious 👌
For me it's simply "I'm making waffles!" Eddie Murphy can make any line sound hilarious.
Although she lives with 7 other men, she's NOT easy. 😆🤣😂
@@DAMIENDMILLS jahahahah
16:31 I just realized that's the Mama Bear as the rug. Remember the three bears during the sequence where we met Donkey?
Jesus fuck, Farquaad has NO chill.
He really hates fairy tale creatures.
The founder of Dreamworks, Jeffrey Katzenberg, used to work for Disney, but he was denied a promotion, that he kinda deserved after basically saving Disney Animation Division by Michael Eisner, his long time friend and who brought him to Disney. So Katzenberg decided to leave Disney and founded his own studio. Shrek IS literally Katzenberg flipping the to Eisner and Disney.
The Super Carlin Brothers did a super interesting video on it.
ruclips.net/video/a3EIDwdfdQc/видео.html
to beat a Katzenberg (in Disney) you need a Katzenberg (in DreamWorks) 😉
I didn’t know any of this, thanks for sharing! Good on Katzenberg to make his own way since he wasn’t appreciated at Disney
@@nickreacts6394 he's been described over the years as petty......among other things
he didn't really deserve the promotion. sure he did save Disney, but he was also being a MASSIVE assholes. he literally tried using someone elses death for his own gain among other things and generally wasn't fit for the role.
Happy to hear you’ll be watching Shrek 2. Its my favorite of the series.
Also, if you want more good Dreamworks movies, Over the Hedge and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron are both great.
I have to agree with you, the second is my favorite too (I haven’t seen the 4th one yet). And thanks for the recommendations!
@@nickreacts6394 4th is my favorite 😍
"This is strange" he said about donkey and the dragon...i was like "wait until the second one"
@@nickreacts6394 ALWAYS forget Shrek the Third
Fun fact: There’s also a Shrek the musical that was on broadway around 2008! They did a pro shot and it’s on Netflix and it’s actually really good lol
I’ll check it out, thanks for letting me know!
"Who I'd Be" is my favorite song of that production
Can't wait for the 2 because we know that's where the iconic stuff is
The reaction will be out on RUclips on Sunday, and so far 2 is definitely my favorite!
@@nickreacts6394 can't wait!!
Someone probably already told you, but this movie is one big middle finger at Disney, from their former animators.
Farquaad is Fuck Waad and resembles a ceo person in Disney.
Also Duloc is Disneyland.
"Don't make waves, stay in line, and we'll get along fine, Duloc is the perfect place."
Donkey didn't tell Shrek the secret, because it's not his secret to tell. He kept his promise, like a true friend.
The Disney CEO they were making fun of with Lord Farquaad was Michael Eisner
the whole first movie is a mocking of Disney and their ethic 🤣 it's insane tbh
The first movie to win the Best Animated Film award ever. Brought to you by DreamWorks starring Mike Myers as Shrek and Eddie Murphy as Donkey as they venture on a quest to rescue the Princess Fiona voiced by Cameron Diaz charged by Lord Farquaad voiced by John Lithgow
I was laughing along every time you laughed. So great to see somebody enthusiastically experience this classic gem for the first time and have it hit all the right beats!
Also "You're so wrapped up in LAYERS, Onion Boy!" should be quoted more often. ;)
'Holding out For a Hero', Puss in Boots and Prince Charming appear in Shrek 2
4:02 The guard at the table Is voiced by "Jim Cummings" a amazing voice actor. Some other voices he's done are,
Winnie the Pooh
Tigger from Winnie the Pooh
Ray from The Princess and the Frog
Darkwing Duck
Cat from CatDog
Razoul from Aladdin
Scar from Loin King (He did the song Be Prepared, Jeremy Irons did about half of it but couldn't do the rest so Jim did the other half of the song)
This was absolutely making fun of Disney specifically. Jeffrey Katzenberg left Disney and started Dreamworks and this was his big “screw Disney” to Disney.
Well, it was very effective. They say success is the best revenge…
It’s SO hard to choose a favorite scene or reference. I feel one of the things to say is that though I’ve watched it a dozen times over the last 20 years I still sometimes stumble on new references I hadn’t noticed before - like really sad one of mama bear, from the magical imprisonments from the beginning, appearing as a rug is lord farquat s bedroom when he’s watching fiona’s video - I just realized that super recently! On a happy note though, I’m so excited for u to watch the 2nd. For me it’s the best!!! Also I LOVE the soundtrack of all the series.
The sequel is so so good (my favorite so far), and you’re right, the soundtrack is killer!
Early 2000s animation still holds up🌟🐉🍿
Yep, looking good two decades later 👌
Shrek was originally going to be voiced by Chris Farley, but he unexpectedly passed away, and they recast Mike Myers. I really can't believe this movie would have been as good without Mike's take on the character.
Mike was actually reluctant to voice Shrek because Farley was his friend.
This movie established many kids at the time their standard of beauty. Even by having the villain be a walking oximoron, someone who is obsessed with perfection, meanwhile he's a dwarf.
I dont know if you knew but All Star was put there until they did a song for the movie but the people loved it that much that they left it on the intro ❤️
I loved all the scene in the castle (rescuing Fiona) specially when Shrek crashes into the tower 😂
So glad All Star stayed in the final cut, it fits the scene perfectly!
DreamWorks has wanted Chris Farley for the role of Shrek but he unfortunately died. So Mike Myers was cast instead
Actually, Chris Farley was set to play Shrek, most of his lines were recorded, but he passed away. Mike Myers was brought on board when they had to redo the film.
17:05 That was a happy accident because it wasn’t a sound effect. That was an actual burp from Cameron Diaz, who had been drinking a soda while recording. That prompted Eddie Murphy to ad lib the next line.
Gotta love the Welcome to Dulac/It's a Small World parody.
Even the creepy version from the Halloween special.
Man I can't wait for you to react to these epic franchise like Shrek, Ice Age, Incredibles, Madagascar, Toy Story. Also some single movies like Brother Bear, Treasure Planet, Legend of the guardians: owls of Ga'Hoole, Rise of the guardians, The Adventures of TinTin, Meet the Robinsons, Sindhbad, Shark tales.
Lots of good ones to watch!
Fun fact: his name is Lord Farquad because when said in an English accent (where the feudal system was popular) it's Lord Fuckwad
Plus, they intentionally made him look similar to Michael Eisner.
The fairy tale characters are actually public domain so anyone can use them, the only things Disney owns is the movies they made from adapting the story.
Hi Thor !
Lord Farquad was voicd by John Lithgow.
I don't know much of his filmography. In France, and by the time Shrek came out, he was essentially known for being the bad guy in Cliffhanger (a Stallone action movie, worth a reaction if you haven't seen it) and the main role from a goofy sitcom 3rd Rock From the Sun.
Ah ok, I haven’t seen those but I knew his name was familiar and it makes sense that he’s a veteran actor he was so good in this
I don't think the scenes were supposed to be melodramatic to a parody, that was just the style back then.
Ah, ok, I might have been reading too much into the directing style
hmmm I don't know.. It def was the style back then, but that for me reinforces the argument that they were making fun of it (considering SO much in this series is satire, film references, making fun of mainstream, etc).
Lord Farquaad is voiced by John Lithgow
Exactly
"Number 3, pick number 3 ✌🏾 my lawd"
Looking forward to Shrek 2, Shrek the Third & Shrek Forever After -Thanks!!!
Having watched the first 3, I’d say it’s a great trilogy so far (hoping Forever After is good too 🤞)
Omg I love this film. Thank you for reacting! 😁
I understand now why it’s so loved! Thanks so much for watching!
one of my favorite lines from Shrek was in this one, "(Fiona) You didn't slay the Dragon, (Shrek) It's on my my to do list now come on."
Shrek 1 and 2 are some of the best animated movies ever, so original, so clever, so much fun, never gets old :) maybe you know this animated movie already but if not I would like to bring Charlotte's Web to your attention, its a great classic which I think many people forgot about :)
I read the book in grade school, but never got the chance to see the film… added to the list!
@@nickreacts6394 great Im sure you gonna have a good time with it, its from 1973 so you will have that nice classic older feel to it :)
When I first went to see this movie, it was then and still just so funny with all the pokes at the various Fairy tales ppl have grown up with. I think Puss in Boots is in the 2nd one and voices wonderfully by - Antonio Banderes' aka- Zorro. 😁 I really enjoyed that you were getting so many laughs from it. It's a fun film.
Yeah, lots of laughs throughout. And Puss in Boots is SO good in the sequel
The Dating Game motif with the Magic Mirror made me roar with laughter when I saw it in the theater when it came out.
instant classic. can't wait for you to watch the second.
I did and I loved it! Reaction will be out on RUclips next Sunday (or on patreon now if you can’t wait :) )
@@nickreacts6394 , ignore the third, it doesn’t end well. Fourth movie is a maybe….
@@osmanyousif7849 @Thor Reacts the third one is not bad as everyone may seem it is. Everyone that has reacted to it on RUclips said they still enjoy the third film. It is what you make it tbh and fourth is good too just every emotional
@@osmanyousif7849 fourth is good not third just don't tell him becuase it will ruin his expectation.
@@richardmelgar1936 THE Third movie is amazing
Man this movie is so nostalgic for me. Me and my dad would just randomly recite the muffin man scene between farquad and gingy. Hands down was our favorite scene.
The movie was great at changing the classic fairytale formula. Ogres are typically seen as big ugly beasts but here Shrek lives in a swamp with a house and only scared villagers as they entered his swamp and he loved his privacy. Fiona was whitely expecting a handsome price to slay the dragon and save her she was looking forward to it for her whole life thats why she poses. She does show her strength when she singlehandedly beats Robin Hood and the merry men in a fight. Fiona's curse was that she turned into an ogre at night but true loves kiss breaks it. Only her true loves kiss was with an ogre and so her ogre form became permanent. My favorite part was instead of slaying the dragon the befriended it
You know Shrek is on Tv when you hear:
SOMEBODY once told me🎶🤣🤣🤣
Originally Shrek was going to be voiced by Chris Farley but since he died Mike got the role.
you should definitely check out the Prince of Egypt also Dreamworks
You would recognize John Lithgow as Dick from the show 3rd Rock From Sun
Man, noone ever hangs around for the swamp karaoke
Please watch the rest of the series. The second one is the best, and the three one is probably the worst; but still watchable. The fourth is very good, and even the musical is very good.( it’s on Netflix)
I will, the second one is coming out next Sunday (or on Patreon now for early access)
At the beginning when Shrek enters the castle and there's no one, when you said is this making fund of Disneyland, yes they are. The high pitched little people song is a parody of small world. The ride with small dolls and the song that keep repeating "it's a small world after all"
grew up watching this movie
9:13 this is very direct at Disney, this was not long after DreamWorks became a thing and they were mostly EX Disney people.
I love your channel! I found it a few days ago with the LOTR reactions, and you're always so invested in everything, it's very nice to watch ^^
Part of the Robin Hood gag is that he's got a French accent. Never seen anybody pick up on that bit.
I don't know much about the origins of the tale, what is its connection to France?:0
Robin Hood is a traditionally English character, so him being French is a silly touch. England and France also spent hundreds of years at war with one another, for any and all reasons they could find.
@@zenhaelcero8481 oh I see, thank you for taking the time to reply!
I love this movie. It's a masterpiece
The way I zoomed here reading the title
Gotta love both films 👌
My favourite sub-set of movie goon is the dude who's like "my evil boss just got eaten so now I'm going to immediately turn babyface". I love that guy.
Farquaad isn't a prince, he's a Lord.
Yeah, I enjoy protagonists with renegade personalities like Shrek
Crazy how he can take 45 minutes and fit it into only 15 minutes
Anytime there is a rope bridge in a movie, it is going to break. Always expect it to.
Ahhhh... so sad you can't understand spanish because the Latinamerican version is soooooo funny. So many references and gags changed in the dubbing to add more relatabality and its SO good, a true gem
*YOU SHOULD WATCH "SHREK RETOLD" it is an absolutely amazing collaboration with funny and beautiful animations!!*
Also, check out the short Karioke in the Swamp; it's Shrek and Fiona's wedding reception. And I highly recommend Megamind if you haven't seen that yet.
Mike Myers is actually Canadian but he's faking his Scottish accent
This movie is a piece of history, for real. XD
This movie is the best!!!
Aaah great reaction as always!! 💜💜💜
Thank you!! 😁
A lot of the jabs at Disney-esque Tropes *were* directed at Disney itself, since several of the animators had previously been fired or let go from them!
@Thor reacts Shrek 2 is even better! And John lithgow plays farquadd
As good as the first one is, I liked Shrek 2 better
I’ve been binging horror movie reactions lately and that open door in the background is freaking me out lol
The biggest flex on this movie is that 90% of it is just the biggest middle finger from Jeffrey Katzenberg to Disney😂😂😂
Just a suggestion or two..
If you haven't already seen them..
Batteries Not Included
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Definitely want to watch Roger Rabbit, Batteries Not Included is one I have to look up (never heard of it)
I loved the moment after the bird popped and u see the three lonely eggs, in any other animated movie it would have been an aww-moment about the eggs being without a mother, but instead a transition to three omelettes(dark humor á la satire) 😂
I really liked Shrek enough to watch the other Shreks, but after watching them all I think the first one was the meakest 🙂
The smashing of the mirror threatening the mirror was awesome, he just happened to have a small mirror in the pocket just in case it would be needed for threatening a mirror, cuz u never know 😂
This movie was sooo friggen great!
I know! Sooo many laughs
@@nickreacts6394 2 is even better, arguably.
Fun Fact: the name "Lord Farquad" is them delibrily calling him "Fuck-wad" in a kids movie

Lord Farquad is voiced by John Lithgow
5:10 "let me guess he doesn't have any friends"

those eyes... share the world of pain..
"all around me all familiar faces..." I know it.. we all know it... the hurt is real...
26:40 You don't know the voice actor?.. Third rock from the sun... hariy and the hendersons.. honestly? xD
I know! How can your heart not go out/ empathize with Donkey? And I actually haven’t seen either of those haha I just knew his name sounded familiar
Such a fun movie
Love this movie! Great reaction!

I'd love if you watched the rest of the Shrek movies (especially the 4th one!)
4:00 - In the Bible, Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, not 20.
I love how the title says Deadpool but im half way through and im only hearing references to the lord of the ring universe
I can’t believe you’ve never seen Shrek.
YOU HAVE TO WATCH THE KUNG FU PANDA TRILOGY PLEASE
6:11-6:13 I usually clean my ear 👂🏻 wax out of the canal carefully.
As fun and funny as this movie is, I like Shrek the musical even better.
Really? Now I really have to check that out..
To this day I hold that Dragon solely responsible for both my scalie and big woman fetishes
nobody comments on the bear skin rug in the lords bedroom, its mama bear.
I didn’t notice it, but someone else pointed that out, and it’s quite dark/ tragic
A question, would you want to be able to catch fish the Shrek way? lol
If you liked Lord Farquad's voice actor, check out a GREAT comedy show, the "3rd Rock From The Sun" series, and try to figure which character is it :-)
Someone help me out with an answer please, wondering if its true/how he hasnt seen all these movies?? New to the channel and it just looked like so many great famous movies has he really not seen them?

3 mins in: i know fiona is an ogre.... dude you know ALOT about this movie
Hard not to have been spoiled after twenty years, the movie is still worth watching that twist alone doesn't make the whole experience!
Jeffery Katzenburg is notoriously petty. So when when this entered development he insisted to the animators that they model Duloc after Disney parks. And it's no coincidence that Farquad bears more than a passing resemblance to Michael Eisner. This movie is subversive as hell and has garnered a significant fanbase over the last 20 years
Yes Katzenberg was petty as hell at the time but has cooled down since then.
Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs is another movie that's a bit of a spoof of fairytales, and it got a very wrecked reputation due to terrible marketing so it's a great example of how you can't always trust trailers.
He may be an ass but Farquad is the best character 😂
