- "Joyful Trains" are novelty, themed or unusual trains in Japan. They all have something special about them! Here's my round-up of the best joyful trains in japan.
*** JAPAN TRAVEL GUIDE BOOK: www.cakeswithfaces.co.uk/prod...
Joyful trains were created by Japanese railways to promote tourism, and encourage people to visit certain regions. They include luxurious trains, large windows and outward facing seats to enjoy the view, themed trains and character trains. This round-up includes some of the most interesting and unique joyful trains, including the Pokemon with You train in Tohoku, the Toreiyu Tsubasa (which has footbaths!), the Hello Kitty shinkansen (bullet train), traditional Japanese style trains with tatami mats, the FruiTea Fukushima, the Tamaden (dedicated to Tama the cat stationmaster in Wakayama City) and lots more!

I'm an English train driver, and every Japanese railway video makes me green with envy :)
Japanese trains just look so cool!! :-)
@@cakeswithfaces If only I could convince my employer to organise a career exchange trip!!! ^_^
@@0cyrhoe And you could put all the ramen on business expenses.... :-)
This youtube is great infomations about japanese trains! Though I am Japanese, I didn't know about everything in this youtube.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
The Namahage at 5.26, they go looking for kids and ask if they've been good or not all year, and if not then they take them away, this does of course scare the crap outta them, but they do bring them back to their parents 😀
Ah I've seen that festival, it looks terrifying! You wouldn't forget that if you were a child in that region!
Pikachu-choo train 😂😂😂
That's a great name!
😝😝 I'm glad you appreciate it!! :-)
Definitely adding these to my future trip plans. Great video. Excited for my guidebook to arrive.
Yay, that's awesome! The books are on their way to me now, can't wait to see them!!
Great video. Thanks for lots of useful information on Japan's themed trains.
Thanks - I wish more people knew about these!! :-)
never forget the day I was minding my business in Tokyo waiting for a train and when I looked up I saw an egg looking back at me :) it was a Gudetama train 😂😂
Ah I'd love to see that one!! That must have been funny to see it completely by surprise! 😝
In Augsburg (germany) we have a christmas Tram which is decorated with fairy lights, tinsel ect and plays carols. Always a pick me up when it starts running around December
Ah that sounds so festive! Germany does Christmas so well - I went to a Christmas market once! :-)
Great presentation, Thanks for sharing ❣️ Love your recommendations
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed it! :-)
Joyful indeed ☺ ♥ 🇯🇵

Love that’s cat train !! Def on my travel wishlist , also can’t wait for the Japan guide 😁😁
Thanks so much! The books are on their way to me now - should be packing them up next week!! 🤞
Japan really thinks of everything!!! I know there's themed trains or trains with huge windows to see the surroundings but never any of this !!! Wow!
I wish more people knew about them, so if they're in the right area they can go on one! 😊
now embracing the train otakuness 🚂, great video!
There's no shame!! Embrace it! 😝
This is great!

@@cakeswithfaces it was a awesome video 👏
This is why im looking forward to your guidebook. You always seem to find these things off the beaten track. (pardon the pun).
When I think I've everything planned for my trip, you throw a spanner in the works. 😂
He he sorry!! 🙃 It really does amaze me though, that there are so many interesting places and things around Japan that we don't really hear about abroad. I think that's why everyone goes to the same places and makes Kyoto, etc so overcrowded.
I love how Japan have colourful trains. I like the idea of riding on the Shinkansen! I aim to visit Japan for my birthday in the future, either in 2021 or 2022. 🚅🚃
Going on the shinkansen was a dream of mine too! I finally got to go on my first trip to Japan - just a really short ride back to Tokyo from Mount Fuji :-) Enjoy planning your trip!!
Ahhh, the Guide looks so good! Looking forward to get mine ;)
They're on the way to me now - should be packing them up next week!! :-)
@@cakeswithfaces It arrived! I browsed through it a bit and it turned out awesome, I love it!
You certainly didn't lie, when you said that it'll have a lot of stuff you don't find in usual guides in it - It's like the knowledge you'd get from watching a lot of videos about Japan-Travel in a compact book :D
@@Astran0th Thanks so much!! That's exactly what I set out to do - make the Japan guide I wanted when I first went, with everything you need to know.

My favorite is the cat train 🐱 and I like you, smiling, pretty girl. 😉
Greeting from Surrey.
The cat train's really cute! 😺
I so wana go on the pikachu chuu chuu it looks so cute of course the dog and cat train is cool to and the toy train lol
The cutest ones are the most fun!! :-)
I love your videos. You always focus on the most important things. The CUTE things! ^_^
Too right!! I truly believe it's the only way to stay sane in this world today. Thank you!! ✨
My retirement goal is to get a little rural home in Japan and ride the trains around for the rest of my days. Lol
Never have heard of these before! :)
Sounds like a good plan! You could ride all the Joyful Trains! :-)
It's so sad that you work so hard on your RUclips channel and upload videos weekly but you don't get what you deserve from RUclips, I hope one day your channel will grow fast and Amy I'm waiting for your silver play button, so please never stops. ;)
Sorry for my bad English 😅

The only tiny mistake is that we would say: 'please never stop', so may I say please never stop learning and using your language skills!
So sweet, thank you so much!
Haha, a silver play button one day would be amazing!! But really I'm just glad if anyone enjoys my videos. :-)
@@cakeswithfaces 😊
Love this
Thank you!! :-)
Awesome video. I was able to see and ride the Girls Und Panzer wrapped train from Mito to Oarai & The Sound!Euphonium wrapped train in the Otsu area. Saw a Hello Kitty themed train when visiting Ogaki & Yoro to visit locations featured in A Silent Voice. Other trains I saw were a Shinobi themed train in Shiga & rode the Ohmi railway train wrapped in their character mascot Akane-chan when travelling to Toyosato to visit the school with the same name used in K-on. Maybe you can also do a video on buses. Saw the Love Live Sunshine bus that travels between Tokyo & Yamanashi.
Wow you've been lucky seeing all them, that sounds amazing! PS I love K-On, it'll always be my fav!!
Would love to see the cat and the train
So adorable!
I took the Ban'etsu Monogatari from Niitsu to Aizuwakamatsu. I found it the night before as I was looking at the train schedule for that route. It's usually a SL (steam locomotive) but it was under maintenance, so it was a DL (diesel locomotive). It was pretty nice to ride a retro looking train. I also took the Hello Kitty Shinkansen, it was not as special, but still fun.
I wish that these thematic trains were easier to find, JR East does a really nice thing with their Joyful train naming scheme, but for other regions, I find it much harder to find them and with many private train company, it can be even harder to find them before traveling. In any case, thematic trains are really cool.
"house get a bit cold in the winter time" is an understatement. They can get REALLY cold. And the AC units can be used a heater too, but still people also use kotatsu and even gas heater to get warm.
That must have been a great experience! The Ban'etsu Monogatari has lovely big windows in the pictures.
Agree with you about them being tricky to find - it's difficult with the trains being run by so many companies, but it'd be good if even the other regions of Japan Railways had a page like on the JR East website featuring all the special trains.
I've never lived in Japan but only visited during the winter. I always heard people online saying how cold it is in the winter, which was confusing when I found the temperature quite mild (in Tokyo at least - not in Hokkaido!!). But of course the houses are built more with the summer in mind. Over here in the UK hardly anyone has air conditioning at home (houses are built more for the winter), but there are only a few days when you really need it.
@@cakeswithfaces Yes, you are right, winter in Tokyo is not that bad. The thing is, as a tourist, you probably stayed in a hotel that was relatively well heated. I personally stayed all winter in a normal house, that have really poor insulation if compared to Canadian house. So if you do not open the AC/heater, it's almost as cold inside and outside, for me a house that get under 10 degree is really cold. Also, people don't let heater on all day/night, you only heat the room you are in, when you are in.
I stayed with a friend in Osaka in early march and first thing in the morning we would go in the living room, that was a bit cold as it was not heated all night long and go under the kotatsu to eat breakfast while watching TV. Kotatsu are the best.
And yes, the train was fun, I even wrote about it : en.japantravel.com/niigata/ban-etsu-monogatari/58646
@@gdore15 That sounds difficult if you're in a normal house. It makes sense to save on heating costs though. Thanks for sharing the blog - the train looks amazing! PS I gave that site a very quick mention in my book in the list of links to check for finding places to go! :-)
Thanks for the 'joyful' video of the unique trains in Japan! I hope to venture out there sometime in the future and have a long holiday visiting the country and the islands around on what there is to see and do! :D
Hehehe Pika-choochoo!
They truly are joyful!! 🎶
2:12 As a Japanese guy, I guessed that Toreiyu was made from (or combined) two words that:
Trail + yu (means hot springs as you explained) =
"The trail that you can find (many) hot spring spots out."
However, I was wrong. JR East says that 「とれいゆ」とは「トレイン(列車)」とフランス語の太陽を意味する「ソレイユ」を合わせた造語です.
www.jreast.co.jp/train/fun/toreiyu.html
I saw that too! I wasn't sure of the connection with "soleil" (sun in French). But still, an interesting name!
These trains are amazing, my favourite has to be the cat train 🐱🚉
I wish we had ones like this in the uk.
Yes - Virgin Trains (or whoever it's owned by now) has a lot to live up to!! :-)
Greetings Amy! I would have never imagined such a thing existed as these trains, so well done! If you have Netflix, there is a series on called "Midnight Diner" based ostensibly in Omoide Yokucho in Shinjuju about the characters who patronize the dinner. My wife and I loved it, so you might want to check it out. It seems a lot different than most of other Japan TV. Another interesting show on NHK World is "Japanology" with Peter Barakan, and it is first rate for Nihonophiles.
It's awesome that they do exist! I watched a few of Midnight Diner! Just like somewhere in Tokyo, I imagine there are places just like that!! :-)
Even Japanese I didn't know the information about footbath!
The train in the area where I live had a service to stop for a while when I came to a place with beautiful scenery.
It was a messenger of God called "Namahage" who said he was an axe-wielding demon.
Never a demon lol
Thank you! I heard about the trains that stop so you can enjoy the view - that's so special! :-)
This might be themed to some more Japaneese TV shows in the future!
I'm sure the character trains are the most popular!!
I know it´s easier to just have one fit all but I really do wonder why it isn´t done more often. You could have a basic design with smaller changes for each prefecture or something like that (You´d obviously not need hundrets of trains with the foot baths, but some of the designs were really nice and I think everyone would be plesently surprised to talk into a train in a different prefecture and find a charming new design).
That be great! There could be simple customisations, or even just decorating with popular characters would encourage people to visit (I'm sure there are lots of people on here who'd go on a pilgrimage to see them!).
I like train so much.
Especially Japanese trains! And these ones are extra-special. :-)
Cakes with Faces I know
My girlfriend and I went to Wakayama for the Tama train. It is amazing. Tama 2 was at the station and she was amazing. Everyone was so nice and friendly. If you are in Osaka go down there and check out the line for sure if you like cats.
Amazing!! I feel like you met a celebrity! 😸😸😸
@@cakeswithfaces she is! I have so many pictures of her
I made that trip right before original Tama passed away. Glad I did. Kishi station, which is designed in the shape of a cat, is also very cute. The designer of these special trains also designed several of the local trains in Kyushu.
@@ldavis3457 Ah you're very lucky! They're certainly a talented train designer!! :-)
I’m thinking whether I should visit Hokkaido. Seems like a good place to visit. If I went in November I think it may snow a lot and spot some Red crowned cranes
I loved it! So different - in February it was the snowiest place I've ever been - such an amazing experience! I'd love to go back in the summer too as there's some beautiful scenery in the countryside. Not sure if you saw them before but all my Hokkaido vids are here if it helps you decide :-) ruclips.net/p/PL-YXkErUfa4kjeiMIWkNHDy1JDCRySt_Y
I've been on the SL Ginga myself. It was tricky to book but nevertheless very possible for a foreigner just like other joyful trains from JR East.
That's good to hear! Hope I can make it on one of the joyful trains one day! :-)

I'm not sure if it counts as a 'Joyful' train, but I'm hoping (still 😕) to ride the Resort Shirakami from Hirosaki to Akita at the right time to catch the shamisen players who entertain the passengers between Goshogowara and Mutsu-Morita.
Not long now till I can set my copy of 'Japan By Rail' aside while I devour your new guide! 🗾🤓💛

No new video this week Amy?
Japan have extended the travel/visa waiver ban until at least the end of August 😢 Not looking good for my trip at the end of September 😩😥😭
Ah nooo, I hope you can reschedule. I've not heard anything about plans for when the bans will be lifted. (Can't wait to reschedule my trip but it still doesn't seem very safe to travel at the moment).
This week I was snowed under with packing up my books for the Kickstarter orders! 600 parcels - single-handedly because of social distancing. 😅 All done now though, I posted the last ones this morning so I'll be back with new videos soon!
@@cakeswithfaces
Yeah hopefully I can reschedule for early next year, never been in the spring so it would be a change. I'd even like to go over Xmas if possible.... Cold though brrrrr 😁
Really glad your book has been a success, sounds like lots of work but I'm happy it's done well 👍
Any ideas for more books?
@@Gazereths1234 Spring is many people's fav time to go! Christmas would be interesting! Coming from the UK, I found the winter in February to be less cold than the UK. I prefer warmer weather but it wasn't that bad - and a lot of touristy places were less crowded than they'd usually be.
I'm still getting over finishing this book, haha! One day, ideally I'd like to have a version just for Tokyo and one for the rest of Japan, to be able to include more info about each area but I don't know if it will happen!
101 isn't that the same number as they ring the temple bell in a temple at new year to get rid of the 101 sins ?
Maybe it's a lucky number...? :-)
I hope they took all those cans of tuna to give to an animal shelter or something like that instead of wasting it.
I hope so, that's a good idea! I'm sure a few went to Tama 2, 3 and 4 :-)
