    Whenever I go to Japan I stay in a small hotel in Shinjuku across from the eastern part of Kabukicho. Every morning I would go on a jog to the Godzilla head and back before heading out for the day’s journey. Would recommend visiting the Samurai Museum for a fun experience as it’s very hands on in terms of costumes and even learning how to sword fight. There’s also a temple that has a small market every Saturday or Sunday with little trinkets from a lot of old folk.

    Nice tips, Amy! I think that even for people like me, who isn't much interested in crowded and overbuilt spaces, a walk around Shinjuku and Shibuya is kinda important to get a feel for Tokyo, even if you don't want to spend much time there. • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  4 года назад

      Thanks! Absolutely agree - if you can stand the crowds for even a short time, it's definitely worth the experience. I think it's a little more bearable in Tokyo as people tend to be more polite and don't push past you as much as in some countries - that makes it easier to cope with crowded stations for sure.

    I tend to pick hotels very close to Shinjuku Station on my trips to Japan especially on the southern side. It's just a very convenient area for me. The one time I did stay away from Shinjuku was in Shinagawa which was nice but took too long a time on the trains to visit friends in the suburbs on the Chuo Line so I don't think I'll do that again. Shinjuku also has a fantastic cinema complex called Shinjuku Piccadilly and I always make an effort on every trip to catch a movie or two there.

    We stayed in Shinjuku at the Hyatt Regency and yes we got lost in Shinjuku station several times. Funny story, the first day we went to the station, I was so confused by the map. A young lady stopped and asked us where we would like to go. I told her to tell me where I should go. She laughed and asked again and I said I really didn't know where I should go and asked for suggestions. She said that the samurai museum was near by so we just walked there. It is small but awesome and the tour guide spoke really good English. Then the tour guide told us about an Udon place around the corner and it was super good. Planning to get back when possible.

      There are so many great hotels in Shinjuku - it's my favourite place to stay in Tokyo! The prices change a lot depending on the time of year and what deals are on, so rather than sticking to specific hotels, I'd recommend choosing somewhere close to a station that's within your price range. Hi Eric! Access to the terrace with Godzilla is supposed to be for hotel guests only. You have to go up a lift, through the lobby and out some doors onto the terrace. I think someone said in the comments once that they just wandered up there - however I'm sure the hotel doesn't really want crowds of tourists all walking through their hotel if they're not staying there.
      Looks like dressing up as a samurai is included with the museum ticket! www.samuraimuseum.jp/en/experience/index.html

I did and said the samething to everyone who grabbed my arm to drag me around. I firmly grabbed their arm back, leaned back to stop them from yanking my arm, and said very formly while looking them in the eye... Touch me again, and this arm of yours will be mine. By the end of 2 weeks and seeing these people almost everyday. We would greet and wave to each other with a health respect for each others personal space. I’m planning on going to Tokyo next summer. I’ll be leaving around mid-July. I was wondering if, in your opinion, you think that the Summer Olympics might interfere with some of the “touristy” things to do around Tokyo. Or just in general. Thanks for any help!

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  4 года назад

      I'd expect it'd be busier than usual, so when you're going to popular, touristy places consider the timing (eg there might be queues for places like the SkyTree - I usually try and avoid places like that at the weekends anyway). There'll be lots of people going to Tokyo for the Olympics and I'd expect they'd want to see the main sites while they're there, when they're not at an event. If you're going outside Tokyo, check the dates of events outside the city to work out when the routes will be busy, and make train reservations as early as you can to make sure you get a seat. It'll be an interesting time to go!

    While I was in Kabukicho, I kept having those dudes trying to coerce me into their bars.
    I said "I"m a white guy vacationing in Japan... why are Nigerians the only people who want to talk to me?"
    In a lot of the hotels and convenience stores there are pre-recorded English messages saying "Beware the touts. Do not accept their offers."
    The stories are not all dramatized and clickbait. They WILL take advantage of you if you're gullible.

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  Год назад

      Unfortunately that is a downside of the area - and why Kabukicho's known as the "bad area" of Tokyo. The only stories I know of people getting into trouble in Tokyo are exactly that - being enticed into dodgy bars by the touts. Usually their money's stolen, or their drinks are spiked, etc. If you ignore the touts and keep walking, it's otherwise a safe place to be; I've stayed there many times as the location's so good otherwise.

    • @riffgroove
      @riffgroove Год назад

      @cakeswithfaces Yeah... generally not a good idea to visit a bar if the guy tells you it's up 7 flights of stairs.
      I also had a dark skinned woman there insist that I needed a "massage" and that she could send someone to my hotel.
      It took me awhile to convince her that I wasn't interested.

    Gosh your blond hair is so mesmerizing, like, it's just the right amount of not-natural and not-too-much either. I'll call that anime blonde :D

    You don't really break this up into "south+west of station"=>more friendly, more international; and "north of station"=not necessarily but it folds in pretty quickly so why not just put another => kabukicho => not really the bestest place to go if you're only visiting. People may be polite, but they really want all of your money.
    Also; I really liked Hotel Washington. Small room, 100% Japan bathroom, delicious breakfast, and good basement restaurants. My suggestion.

    I have a terrible news: Toei Animation Studio and Museum was opened since August 28 & then, it close again since September 8 due to COVID19 situation. I am very heartbroken 💔 definitely. Stay safe and stay healthy.

      @@cakeswithfaces I think the COVID-19 disrupted you and prevented you from travelling to Japan in 2020.
