We lost a legend today and he will be dearly, dearly missed. May he rest in peace. What an influence he's had, and continues to have on music. Thank you Wayne!
Mr. Shorter was without doubt unique, one of a kind, a brilliant composer also. When you factor in the pioneering he and Zawinul created, add their influence on so many ensembles..Whew!He accomplished more than 5-10 men's share of building something eternally relevant that brings Great Joy to humans. Thanks for his life.Peace!
His genius is also perpetuated in his association with Milton Nascimento and some of the most beautiful sax solos in Brazilian popular music! R.I.P Master!
My first time seeing him live was with Weather Report in their early days. It was an amazing concert. It was like an intense conversation between powerful intellects. I was just in high school. It is one of the reasons I became a musician
It seems that lately, at the age of 72, I find a reason to be deeply saddened every week or two. Sometimes I know the exact reason for my sadness, and other times it remains a mystery, just beyond my reach and recognition. The sadness that is visiting me today arrives with no puzzlement at all... thank you Wayne.
I’m 56 . As I'm witnessing the passing of my favorite jazz artists, who I grew up listening to, I'm reminded of the impermanence of life. It has made me appreciate the present moment more and look at the world with a different perspective. I'm sure they're playing their music in heaven.
Walter, this is one of the perils of aging. I'm 73, btw. As the years tick on, we lose our friends, and the cultural icons we embrace. The pace seems to quicken with each year. And then, eventually, we join them.
The jazz world, and the world was blessed to have Wayne Shorter for all these many years. So many artists have gone too soon. His music will endure, his spirit will inspire music musicians yet to come. I'm grateful he shared his gift with us.
Modern music without Wayne Shorter wouldn't be the same. He changed so many aspects of composition, innovating and always pushing ahead. I have followed Wayne and his music since early '70s and played a lot of it. No one will replace this kind of eternal musician and we'll miss him. Now he's with Miles, Zawinul, Jaco... jamming hard!!!
Rest in peace. This is a very good eulogy, thank you. I got to his music through the second Miles Davis quartet but he has always made very interesting music.
Jesus, I’m so sorry to hear Wayne Shorter just passed. I’m grateful for how active, engaged and respected he remained through his last day on earth. May his spirit continue to soar as he journeys on ❤
A giant. You can almost feel a void manifesting itself in music. Like oxygen... became less. I was like no but realized he lived a full life, and his beautiful playing, his reach, his voice, will be greatly missed but forever cherished and appreciated. Herbie's last piano touches, like tears. Beautiful tribute Jazz Video Guy. Thank you Mr. Shorter.
Another titan has left us and is now playing above in the blue heaven. Right now in memory of this great sax player I will be listening to "Deluge" from 1964, one of my favorites where Wayne is being accompanied by McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman and Elvin Jones. R.I.P. brother!
Back in 1987, I was in Nadines Music store in LA, checking out the then new Roland GR-50 guitar synth. I was just moving major sevenths all over the guitar neck, and this black man in the horn room was playing along beautifully. When I was putting the guitar away, the salesman came over and said: “You just went 15 minutes with Wayne Shorter and it was great.” It truly was. RIP no ze za no ze zen no ze hokoyo to.
My condolences to his family. I've been listening to his music as long as I fell in love with Jazz. His compositions are timless and he brought the artform to its highest peaks. May he rest in peace. The planet has lost a friend.
Oh no! They kept this hidden for 2 weeks? One of the true giants of tenor and soprano saxophone and Jazz composition and a huge inspiration for my own playing. Horrible news.
Very sad news, R.I.P Wayne Shorter. His voice and spirit will stay. For me, he was always on top with Coltrane as my favorite sax players, always searching and playing a very spiritual way. Thank you Wayne for all what you brought to the music world. You and Sonny Rollins were the two last legendary sax players. You will be missed !
Such a shock. Only recently at my favourite Jazzspot I heard Black Nile , Adam's Apple and Footprints., three of his great tunes, R.I.P. His music will last forever.
A truly great player, genius, brilliant. His work in Weather Report was wonderful beyond words. Thank you for giving so much Wayne, you left us all with so much! RIP! We miss you!

Wayne brought a piece of metal to LIFE.....He made that saxaphone sing like a complete champion with seemingly reckless abandon with supreme knowledge. He completed Weather Report and the music remains Eternal...THANK YOU WAYNE SHORTER.
Wayne Shorter had a great legacy. An undoubted Jazz exponent he later played as a session musician with the likes of Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell. Obviously a great connection with Herbie Hancock. Truly a diverse player. He will be missed.
