The mobile port is perfectly fine. Even better in some areas. And it's only $15.00. I get that mobile gaming isn't the best, but if you can put that to the side, you're pretty much playing the same thing.
When I got the game I was stubborn and didn’t take the right route to get the ras mirror and was over leveled at 27😭😭 then kept playing even after I beat it to level 65 maybe. Then I was on a third save and moved too fast and saved over the wrong file and it sucked
@@wesleyriley7963 same, the only thing that makes the secondary market price hikes hurt is that I won't be able to afford a new copy of one of my fav games. Emulation just isn't the same, at least not if it's a game you grew up with
Just a few days ago, I found a used copy of DQ IX for $35 (+ $5 shipping). The game was impeccable and it looks like it was barely used. I'm having a blast with it, though I wish more people knew about this series in my region.
This is why emulation in the future is a must simply for historical preservation because the hardware these software titles were designed for is a limited medium. Meaning that once it fails...the software fails...unless it's emulated of course.
I'm so glad that before covid I made an effort to buy all the DS games I wanted especially all the Dragon Quest games back when GameStop still sold retro consoles
I only got into DQ after finishing 11 last year, so when I wanted to get into playing all the 3ds/ds titles, I had to fork out 500$ for all the mainline games 😭 I have an r4 cart but DQ became one of my most favorite series, so I wanted to get them for the collection before everything shot up even higher
Wow, i had no idea this was worth any money! I have an unopened copy that i bought when it came out but never opened it because i played the rom instead. Not interested in selling it though. Dragon Quest holds a special place in my heart.
I went to a retro game store like in 2015 or so, and I somehow managed to get the DS versions of DQ 5, 6, Chrono Trigger, Baiten Kaitos 1 for GameCube, all for like $50. They also had DQ9, but I didn't have enough money.
Became aware of the price hikes when filling in my EO collection... it's absolutely mental. Glad I actually landed a copy of DQV in 2020 for around £40
I got this for $50 also (complete in box and in like new condition) right at the start of the plague. It was actually a combo with Dragon Quest IV for $100 total. I thought it was a wild overpay back then, but I justified it as a one time purchase of something I've wanted for long time. It's been a surprise watching the prices go up so much the last couple of years. The one game I regret not getting back then is Rocket Slime for like $20.
I'm so happy I went through a faze of buying all the DQ games back in 2017 when they were all reasonably priced. I paid $75 for my copy of DQ V CIB and even then I thought the price was too high. That being said as a die hard Mega Man fan I can definitely emphasize with the DQ community. Mega Man Star Force 3 also sells for over $300 now
I really hope they do the same thing they dit for the DQ 1 2 3 collection on the switch but for DQ 4 5 6. Why do you thing it's that improbable they ever port it to modern consoles ?
I gotta give it to the mobile version. If you really have no other choice, it's a decent port with a few neat QOL features. Although, I gotta mention that the PS2 version (with translation patch) has a certain charm and smoothness to its gameplay and pacing...
lol that slow zoom at the end. But yeah it's frankly kinda crazy wild that there's NO version of DQ4-6 on Switch at all. Why can't they just port the mobile versions or DS versions over? If they can do it with 1-3 why not 4-6? ESPECIALLY for such an important and beloved series?
Apparently I own a 200-300 dollar game. Still, this game is still avaiable on iPhone and Android, and that version has improved resolution and music. Still, it sucks to not have physical controls, you can't even connect a controller to your phone via bluetooth and play the game with physical controls that way. Hopefully modern consoles and PC will get ports of Dragon Quest 4-6 with the moble enhancements. Heck, while they are at it they should port Dragon Quest 7 and 8 with all the 3DS improvements and additions to modern platforms as well.
That's kinda weird. Maybe it's just an iPhone thing but my phone can connect to a wireless controller via bluetooth. Edit : I meant iPhones can't connect to it, but my android phone can.
I just bought dragon quest 6 on the ds for $90 a couple days ago. Really enjoying the game so far. I’m probably going to make my own case to put the cartridge in.
I have a copy of Soul Silver that I bought used from a Game Stop, probably paid like 60-70 Usd long time ago, I’m glad I had the chance to got it that time. Also I have the Holy Grail Trinity collection of the Wii, Xenoblade, Pandora’s Tower and the Last Song :)
I’ve had a similar experience with several SNES games. I purchased a used copy of Chrono Trigger in January 2020 for about $100 Canadian. Now the game sells for $200-400 easy, and that’s JUST for the cartridge. I have also been trying to track down a copy of Tecmo: Secret of the Stars for the better part of a year. Before I began looking for it, you could get the game for $60-90 Canadian. Nowadays, I can’t even find the cartridge with a decent looking label for under $150. It’s goddam insanity.
Got extremely lucky recently and somehow found both DQ6 and DQ4 for sale at Gamestop for very affordable prices, which kicked off a new desire to pick up the rest of the DQ DS games! I played Rocket Slime as a kid and have been excited to hopefully get every DQ game, but man the price on DQ5 is crazy high and hard to justify, especially when it's possible to get the mobile version or an emulator. Also, DQM:Joker 2 is also on the expensive side, rip
Makes me sad knowing 4,5 and 6 are super expensive to get now a days. Wish there was a collection that contains all three games with added quality of life updates. Be the best way to play it. More people need Torneko in their life! Side note, the whole “moisture damage” is still damage. Who knows of the cart was even playable at in that condition. Anyways, hope someday a collection or a port of the ds DQ games will be more available in the future.
So, so, so glad I snapped up the DS Zenithia Trilogy when I did almost 3 years ago. Less than $150 for all 3, including shipping, tax, etc. Just have to be patient and really dig through the listings.
Still have all DQ Games (DS + 3DS) in CIB condition. Some years ago my father was close to throw them away. Luckily he asked me if i want to keep the box before throwing it out.
Im glad that i was able to purchase all the ds remakes when i was i kid. Im from Italy and at the time dragon quest wasnt that popular among kids, i was basically the only one in the school that new the existence of the series. I have all the dragon quest (main) that are available on the ds/3ds all with italian box and manuals....i treath them as my personal treasure :')
This is why emulators and roms are so important for keeping great games alive without paying an arm and a leg for a game. Emulators are the only reason why I even buy these new games now because emulators gave me the chance to play old games that I otherwise would never have played like the DQ series, Ys series, tales series, much more which now gives me a reason to buy the new ones and others these companies make.
I am kicking myself for not picking up every copy of DQ9, 4, 5, and 6 in my area, when 9 was about $9.99 from gamestop and best buy. There were like 20 ish copies in my area left, sitting for months. 4 and 5, especially after SE reprinted 5, was between 12.99 and 19.99 new, and 6 was 14.99 new. I had the money, but I was so used to the retro prices then, I knew that at worst, 5 would be 40~60, 4 and 6 might hit 30~40, and 9 would remain somewhere between 15~25 for used down the road. All collectors would know based on total prints, that's about what the market would be. They weren't rare (DQ5 was at first, but the second print run put it into DQ4 prices, and 6 was actually going DOWN in price leading into COVID, from the 70~90 it was due to rarity...heading down to the 50~60, and eventually 30~40 once it hit its nice happy medium based on general DQ prices and print counts we know or can guestimate). So not a huge deal and I didn't have a second console to justify it. I wouldn't resell them in this market either, I'd have played and held onto them for having kids down the line. Now...wow. Just wow.
Another thing is they could reprint the games. You can still find them on the shop for "purchase" but you end up either having to wait until enough people "purchase" for them to print like 10~20 copies or some such, or they send a message after a week saying they cannot fulfill your order and you won't be charged. Meaning they HAVE the print machines for these games. They COULD print them. They could even get Nintendo to reprint 9, 6, and Joker 2 if they wanted to. That would strip out the market immediately. Especially as the 3DS can play the games. It would also enhance the 3rd party market to create a dual-screen system on the level of modern high-end phones, or mini-computers, to upscale and improve the experience for DS and 3DS games, especially as the 3DS store has gotten a LOT of interest since Nintendo's store closure announcement. I mean, 3DS units are double what they were post-covid bump after the e-shop closure announcement. So mid-2021 was the best time to buy since 2019, up through November/December of 2021. Now it's insane...300 for a scratched up and beaten up 3DS.
In anycase, kudos my old friend. May sanity commence. I won't even touch conventions for that reason, as I know I'll want to look, and be sorely disappointed with the price points.
And thought the follow up/sequel in the Zenithian trilogy was Dragon Quest VI for the Nintendo DS. That goes for $600.00 brand new and I just discovered V brand new goes for a whopping $700.00 on Amazon!
My guess as to its rarity and high price are tons of people like me, old spergs who grew up with a series and were still excited enough to pick it up. It nearly dislodged Chrono Trigger from first place, and became the best game from what was already my favorite series. In short, you can have it when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.
It's honestly baffling to me that this *hasn't* been slapped on every storefront imaginable. DQXI is a bonafide hit worldwide, got ported to every platform -even Xbox, which is surreal- and given a whole new audience an interest in the series. SE is literally just not getting money they could be. And what's more, there's a fantastic PS2 version of DQV in Japan, slapping the DS version's localization on that and putting it up for $19.99 would be an easy source of money. Heck, I'd buy it right now if they did xD
@@shytendeakatamanoir9740 Oh yeah, I completely forgot she was introduced in the DS version specifically. Still, a port of the mobile version, which came later, would be fine with me
Just wanted to say, even though I understand the hesitation about SquareEnix mobile ports, the mobile version is *the* definitive version of this game. Not only is the UI, font, and art exactly the same or better than the DS port. (I talked about party chat being missing from the DS port but that's not actually the case. My b). Either way, the DQV mobile port is really good. There's no reason to pay $300 when you can just pay $15. EDIT: I mixed up V and IV. Oof.
Its funny, when i was getting my collection of DQ games together the most expensive for me wasnt DQ5, it was DQ4. I had gotten all the other games as used or reproduced copies so they were all 20-30 bucks, but DQ4 was official and sealed in the wrapping and everything it even came with the manual. would of cost me about 65 dollars, but my grandpa actually got it for me as a Christmas gift which was pretty sweet.
I lucked out and got it for 100 norwegian crowns, which is around 10 usd. Seller did not know its value. Looking forward to play this, been on my list for a while.
Its not always people selling it for more, thats where the market is at Supply and Demand...its the people that are purchasing it at those insane prices that keep the prices going up
I played this game on my R4 back in the day and never finished, but a few years before the low key apocalypse I managed to snag a legit new (at the time) copy and completed it, it's my fav DQ game and it's a crime it's not more accessible or talked about. Maybe if the HD 3D version of III sells well...
Damn! Just been through my eBay history and I imported a new sealed copy from the US into the UK in 2020 for £55. It's not sealed any more, but still mint. I bought all the other DS DQs around the same time, too. IV was sealed.
Yeah, I was shocked to see that Spirit Tracks is over $200 sealed. Never got around to playing it so my new copy is now worth over 5x what I paid for it..
I’m a dragon quest collector (been my all time favorite series since I played 2 when I was 6 years old lol), I actually have a full DS/3DS set of both the English and Japanese releases (including ultimate hits because I’m insane) for both sealed and complete in box and I can not tell you what a pain in the ass it was to accomplish. If I had started a few years sooner it would have been easy but because of Covid it ended up being an astronomical chore. My entire collection is huge but getting all those damn DS games was a pain in the ass, more so than any other part of it I’d say.
I kid you not I was looking up how much the game was because I was getting nostalgic, the moment you uploaded this video. I remember a few years ago trying to buy it off the Square Enix store for like $20. But told myself I could get it later. : 😭
This is really a shame, I loved the DQ franchise as a child, so for years I tried to find physical copies of all the games, but seeing this made me realiced that unless I'm ready to spend an absurd ammount of money in only one game, I'm stuck with Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 1&2 and Dragon Quest 8, but I really hope they lower prices for me to be able to buy some more to make an actual collection
I for one am glad I bought dragon quest iv, v, vi, and ix for $107 back in 2019 before they shot up in price. I bought these games after I played and fell in love with DQ11 S on the switch. I wanted to play them and add them to the collection. I genuinely feel bad for people who won't get to experience these games. I hope these games get ported over (at least digitally) to some modern platforms.
i got all EU Dragon Quest Games for the DS + Rocket Slime from the US. As well as a ton of the other expensive or Rare DS Games. Like Pokemon Heartgold CiB, Solatorobo or Pokemon Conquest. But also some very oscure shovelware Games nobody knows even exist and are among the most Rare Games for the System. Especially in a particular Region Variant. For example Ace Attorney Miles Edgeworth. The German Version sold a couple month ago for almost 100€ just because it is the German one.
I have DQV DS in excellent condition. Paid $40 for it on release day. In fact, I have every main DQ game except X. Probably the most valuable game in my collection is Xenosaga Episode 3 with lenticular cover.
i was smart enough to talk myself into buying a sealed copy of Dragon Quest V on play-asia for 67$ back at the start of 2020 and at that time i thought i was crazy for doing so but seeing how high the prices have gotten and how rare this game is now im glad i did… also made the smart choice to buy dq5 on ios and beat it about 81 hours later and was blown away.
Dragon Quest V is what turned me into a DQ fan... a truly great game. I can even see it going up to 500$

I personally own quite a few rare games. Every original run of DQ, the DS rereleases, FF II & III for the SNES, Chrono Trigger for SNES & DS... Mainly Square or Enix games basically.
I bought a used copy of DQ5 on DS back in 2020 that was just the cartridge for 55 dollars. I spent more on DQ4 on DS at 61 dollars for just the cartridge alone on the same day in 2020, which boggles my mind. I remember when DQ6 was the most expensive of the bunch, yet I only paid around 50 dollars for it in 2019, and this whole price gouging thing is just absurd in general. It sucks how retro gaming has fallen victim to this whole thing. It's made obtaining these games to play really difficult for an affordable price and it sucks.
The cheapest one i ever saw was 170 Euros and it was only the cartridge. The most expensive on was 800 Euros for a complete set. For how much did i buy my originally sealed complete copy? 32 Bucks that randomly came up on amazon LOL
I have a sealed copy of chorno trigger on ds that I bought when I was a kid that is worth an astronomical amount now. I bought dq 5 for myself (at 150 compete in box) back when I graduated from uni. It was my gift to myself for graduating as it is my favourite game of all time and I did not have a physical copy. I always thought dq 5 was your favourite game! I saw your best dragon quest games video and just assumed I guess. I wonder what your favourite game is? Hopefully square gives us a new way to purchase this game at a reasonable price outside of smartphones. I would probably cry if they remade it a-la dq 3 remake (wherever that is) but I just really want more people to play this game and realize how special it is
I’m especially pissed about SoulSilver… I sold my copy for $50 and a year later the epidemic hit and now it’s so much more valuable. The worst part is I only sold it because I’d just started a new job and didn’t have money for gas…
I've been playing DQV on my phone later, and while playing with touch controls is a pain, the audio is so much better that I prefer it to the DS version now.
i got DQ5 complete for like, $25 or $30 iirc in 2016. Same with Dragon Quest IV, which I think was even cheaper. I remember seeing Dragon Quest VI for $70-75 (it used to be the most expensive DQ DS game because it was a late release and didn't have a lot of copies made) and thought it was absurd, and didn't buy it at the time. Little did I know how bad things would get some 4 or 5 years in the future!
I bought this when it was first at retail, as I'm a big fan of the Dragon Warrior/Quest games and the original Super Famicom version of the game never released here in the US, so the DS remake was my first chance to play this in English. I had no idea it was selling for so much...not that I'd ever sell my copy.
I have a copy of DQ5 and I'm trying to remember how much I paid for it... I'm not going to sell it, of course, but I'm just really curious to see how the price has changed.
I decided to get into video games again during the pandemic and decided just to get the mobile version. I originally played a translation shortly after one was made.
I’m sailing the high seas for dragon quest on DS with my 3ds, the pricing is still insane. I might just get a remade box art just to have it for the collection. It really sucks
Just bought my DQV cartridge for $165 last month. Now I have every DS Dragon Quest. I could whine about it, but it was worth it I guess. I found out about this series when Hero came to Smash, and was baffled to see Toriyama-san's artwork in a different series. Had no idea. Been hooked since then from the great classic gameplay and charm.
so that's where that 50€ i was about to buy end up? hope you enjoyed it 🤣 jokes aside, i really missed the chance to buy an actual DS copy of DQ5, about 3-4 years ago. I think it was at 70€. I thought it was too expensive. Which, admittedly, it was, for 2018/19. But nowadays, you can obviously say i missed a big chance. at least there's the mobile version, but still 😢
It's happening to a lot of games. I saw a copy of Sands of Destruction on the DS for $200 brand new. The kicker? the game has a $15 price sticker on it
I remember playing the rom for fan translated DQV (super famicom version) and loving it. Then found out it was coming out on the DS and I bought it day one. I replayed all of the content up to where I stopped and was blown away by how well it was done. Still is one of the best DQ games ever made. The only one that I like more would be the DS version of DQVIII. I'm looking forward to the HD2D remake of DQ3 because that is also a classic that deserves a revamp.
remember when I saw it on Amazon about 2 years ago for 70 bucks new and sealed but didn't bought it because I thought it would low its price and now its the only fcking game I need to complete my mainline DQ collection
Yeah this is crazy, luckily I gotten most of these retro games at a somewhat decent price. I got DQV for $175 with DQVI $125, sure that's still $300 combined together, but least I got two games instead of one. This was last year around December and both are CIB.

I bought the DQV DS game back when it first came out in 2009. It is my favorite Dragon Quest game. And I guess it's valuable now.
That version don't have Deborah though. Not having any marriage option lessens the experience.
That, and less monster options, as well.
Bought my copy back in 2015 for 30$ bought IV and VI shortly after for more or less the same. I'll never sell. My favorite video game franchise
Flash cartridges and emulation have never looked better.
DQ VI on the DS used to be more expensive than V, but that changed after DQ: Your Story IIRC.
Yeah, I was shocked to see that Spirit Tracks is over $200 sealed. Never got around to playing it so my new copy is now worth over 5x what I paid for it..
Yeah, I ended up paying close to $90 on my copy back in like 2020 I think??? It seemed absolutely INSANE
This is why i love Emulation, one of my favorite Game boy color games Survival Kids shot up to 120 bucks WITHOUT A CASE.
I just beat the mobile ports of the first 6 DQ games. They're all quite good. Controls are modified to be used with just one hand.
I never played DQ5 before, and I picked up the mobile version last week. Honestly it plays and looks great. I can only recommend it.
I kid you not I was looking up how much the game was because I was getting nostalgic, the moment you uploaded this video. I remember a few years ago trying to buy it off the Square Enix store for like $20. But told myself I could get it later. : 😭
Ayy! New Sack video!
You should make a video on like your fav dq heroes , fav princess , fav bosses, fav villains , fav companions and like more fact vids and shot
i got all EU Dragon Quest Games for the DS + Rocket Slime from the US.
I bought this GameStop “used” for $30 a few years ago and it came with the box and all of the inserts!
I have DQV DS in excellent condition. Paid $40 for it on release day. In fact, I have every main DQ game except X. Probably the most valuable game in my collection is Xenosaga Episode 3 with lenticular cover.
owning the game does have really a different feel to it 😅
I was lucky enough to play it as a kid and it's still my favorite DQ title 💙
My favourite is 8
i was smart enough to talk myself into buying a sealed copy of Dragon Quest V on play-asia for 67$ back at the start of 2020 and at that time i thought i was crazy for doing so but seeing how high the prices have gotten and how rare this game is now im glad i did… also made the smart choice to buy dq5 on ios and beat it about 81 hours later and was blown away.
I have FF DoS, IV and V (never got VI sadly), and all the DQ games, including DQMJ 1 and 2.
FF III and IV DS as well.
Got mine at the perfect time for 20 bucks from gamestop.
Back when my Gamestop still sold used DS games, I picked up DQ 5 and 6 for about 25$ each.
I guess I lucked out there.
Happened to come across a complete UK version for 68€, deal of my life tbh
My favorit memory was seeing the lepord all grown up
The cheapest one i ever saw was 170 Euros and it was only the cartridge.
I would probably cry if they remade it a-la dq 3 remake (wherever that is) but I just really want more people to play this game and realize how special it is
I just finished the mobile version of DQV and it was so good!
I’m especially pissed about SoulSilver… I sold my copy for $50 and a year later the epidemic hit and now it’s so much more valuable. The worst part is I only sold it because I’d just started a new job and didn’t have money for gas…
They should remaster the PS2 remake in HD and add the DS content. If not remake it completely in the 11 style. That would be ideal.
We need a DQIX remake first, but that would be great, yeah.
That pretty cool out of the many retro video game channels I watch you are among the few that uses animation when you’re telling a story. Good content
"Because it's just that good."
Video summed up in 1 sentence.
Holy shit guys he's back with THE ANIMATIONS
One of my most treasured gaming possesions...
Bought my copy new when I worked at Fry's. Loved it. Sold it last year for $200 and I can still enjoy it on my R4 card. Win.
I’m sailing the high seas for dragon quest on DS with my 3ds, the pricing is still insane. I might just get a remade box art just to have it for the collection. It really sucks
Im glad i own it with the box and manual! Amazing game!
Makes me glad I picked up the DQ6(DS version) and DQ 9 at my GameStop before covid hit
This is why an R4 is an essential purchase.
Rarest Ds games I have as of now
Dragon quest 4-6
Etrian odyssey 1-nexus (including untold)
Just bought my DQV cartridge for $165 last month. Now I have every DS Dragon Quest.
I could whine about it, but it was worth it I guess. I found out about this series when Hero came to Smash, and was baffled to see Toriyama-san's artwork in a different series. Had no idea. Been hooked since then from the great classic gameplay and charm.
I feel this way about kirby super star ultra
One of the rarest games on the Nintendo DS and I sold it like an idiot still beating myself up over it.
I'm pretty sure DQ 6 is more rare than 5, but I emulated them both and don't feel bad. If they port it, I will buy it.
My DQ6 cartridge doesn't work on the 3DS for some reasons...
so that's where that 50€ i was about to buy end up? hope you enjoyed it 🤣
jokes aside, i really missed the chance to buy an actual DS copy of DQ5, about 3-4 years ago. I think it was at 70€.
I thought it was too expensive. Which, admittedly, it was, for 2018/19.
But nowadays, you can obviously say i missed a big chance.
at least there's the mobile version, but still 😢
I’m so glad I picked this up in 2019, sheesh
Geez.
Imagine if we got the PS2 remake localized back in the day. Just how much would an English version of that would cost in modern times.
I'm looking forward to the HD2D remake of DQ3 because that is also a classic that deserves a revamp.
remember when I saw it on Amazon about 2 years ago for 70 bucks new and sealed but didn't bought it because I thought it would low its price
and now its the only fcking game I need to complete my mainline DQ collection
Yeah this is crazy, luckily I gotten most of these retro games at a somewhat decent price. I got DQV for $175 with DQVI $125, sure that's still $300 combined together, but least I got two games instead of one. This was last year around December and both are CIB.
